TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral Read More
Apps to kickstart your New Year's resolutions
Calendar16 Sun, 01 Jan 2012 20:15:00 UTC +00:00
With the first day of the new year falling on a Sunday, it's is a great day to organize whatever resolutions you've made. Here are a few apps to get started with. I'm spending my day getting my tasks lined up in 2Do ($6.99), which is one of the most reasonably priced to-do apps; it not only looks nice but packs in a lot of features. We took a look at the app in October and were impressed with the intuitive interface. I keep it synced between my iPad and iPhone using Dropbox. If you're looking to cut down on paperwork and implement a scan-to-cloud solution, you can invest in a Doxie Go for quick and painless scanning to the cloud service of your choice. If you already have a scanner or multi-function printer but you'd like to move to cloud storage of your scans, give the $19.99 ScanDrop for the Read More
Daily iPad App: 2Do
Calendar16 Tue, 11 Oct 2011 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
I'm not exactly the paradigm of organization -- it took me years to get a regular calendar set up and working, my email inbox is usually a mess of various reminders and things that need replying to, and my present to-do system is usually just whatever piece of paper I can grab in real life and scribble some tasks on. But I do want to be more organized, and so when I finally bought my iPad last week, I poked around the App Store for solutions and tried to find one that 1) was easy to use and pleasing to the eye and that 2) I would actually stick with. Things is generally recognized as the champion of the bunch, and it's very nice, but at $19.99, it's an investment as iPad apps go, especially if you're not sure how long you'll stick with it. At $6.99, 2Do is a more Read More
iOS: Sync on Launch vs Sync on Exit
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Sep 2011 01:54:54 UTC +00:00
[Warning: this is one of the geekier posts I’ve written in a little while. If the words “sync” and “cloud” bore you to tears, might I recommend an older, simpler piece of mine which discusses the merits of drawing sheep on your touchscreen.] “Sync on exit” doesn’t really sound terribly exciting, but it has become one of my favourite features in my productivity apps, especially since I spend so much time and energy thinking about how to keep my data synced across my iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Appigo’s ToDo and Guided Ways’ 2Do are great examples of the niche set of apps that are intelligent enough to synchronize your info with the cloud after you press the Home button, and I love them to death for doing so. When given the option, I prefer to sync on both startup and exit, but if forced to choose, I would definitely stick with Read More
iSource “Best of” Picks of the Week
Calendar16 Sat, 09 Jul 2011 17:58:35 UTC +00:00
This week for our weekly installment of Picks of the Week we are changing things up a little bit.  It’s hard to believe that we have been running the POTW post for 30 weeks now!  So far our writers at iSource have highlighted almost 150 separate iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and Apple TV related items.  In the spirit of fun, and to give our hard-working writers a bye week, I thought it would be nice to take some of my favorite posts and create a “Best of” Picks of the Week post this week instead.  Sorry for the one day delay, but it was harder than I thought to sort through nearly 150 posts form ten different contributors.  Hope you like my selections.  Feel free to leave a comment below and let me know some of your favorites you have seen on former POTW posts, or would like to see on Read More
App Showdown: Location-Aware Reminders
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 16:00:23 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/29/2011 at 8:00am | by J Keirn-Swanson To-Do apps are a dime a dozen. But what good is knowing you need to swing by the library to pick up a book when you're clear on the other side of town? A task manager is only helpful if it tells me when I need to do something and when I'm near that place. Enter location-aware apps. The first thing we need to get out of the way with location-aware apps is that so far, none of them work when not on. It would be nice if you didn't have to open the app and leave it running in the background to get notifications, but at this stage that's not happening. Whether or not iOS 5's Reminders has that same weakness we'll have to wait and see. And if you need this kind of service yesterday? Well, yesterday is here. We read Read More

BusyToDo und 2Do: zwei Aufgaben-Apps mit MobileMe-Sync
Calendar16 Sat, 25 Dec 2010 15:51:39 UTC +00:00
Die Cultured Code-Aufgabenverwaltung ‘Things‘ stellte kürzlich in einem Blogbeitrag eine ‘Over-the-Air’-Synchronisation in Aussicht (“The final release of cloud sync as part of Things is still off by a few months.”). Die Ankündigung als ‘verspätet’ zu bezeichnen, entbehrt jeder Untertreibung wenn man sich die Versprechungen zur Desktop-Version aus dem Oktober 2008 (!) noch einmal vor Augen führt: Needless to say that we gonna implement multiple Mac syncing with MobileMe – and maybe also without it. The release of Things 1.0 is scheduled for January 2009 and we hope to be able to include multiple Mac syncing. But I can’t guarantee this.
Making Toodledo bearable with userscripts
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Dec 2010 17:48:54 UTC +00:00
Toodledo makes for a pretty decent, free task manager: it’s based in the cloud and syncs over-the-air with a number of different iOS apps (2Do, Toodledo, ToDo, etc.), but the appearance of the web app, by default, is enough to make angels weep. Luckily for us, there are user scripts to fix that for free. After a bunch of googling I was able to find this MacOSX theme from earnjam that’s quite up to date and still being improved upon. It’s very snazzy and I love how much more organized all my tasks appear. If you don’t like that one, though, there are plenty more on UserStyles.org. Installing a given script is as easy as using the dialogue along the right side of the screen (just make sure to pick the right browser): If you’re using a site-specific browser like Fluid, just open a new tab (Cmd-T), visit the URL of Read More
Review: wunderlist task manager for iPhone and Mac
Calendar16 Sun, 12 Dec 2010 23:09:05 UTC +00:00
I really want to like wunderlist because the Mac/Windows and iPhone apps are all very pretty, very free, and very capable of syncing with each other over the internet (over-the-air) without having to be on the same local wi-fi network. I also want to like wunderlist because its design aesthetic reminds me of Things, and funnily enough, OTA sync is exactly what many Things users have been clamouring for. So it seems to me that I really should like wunderlist, but I don’t (and that tears me up a little in a manly, task management kind of way). THE SETUP wunderlist seems quite promising right out of the box because there are Windows, Mac, and iPhone clients, and all you need to do to link them is create a wunderlist account and then log in on your various devices. Login info, including the e-mail portion, seems to be case sensitive, though, Read More
I actually forgot to post this one when it came about a few days ago, but better late than when in Rome…or something like that. The change notes in 2Do 2.4 ($6.99) are pretty self-explanatory in this release: Mobile-Me syncing, background sync completion (only on devices that support background sync), sync-on-exit, and in-app tips. The sync on exit strikes me as an especially useful idea, since or saves you the trouble of that last tap before you leave the app. I havent used the feature myself (I’m not currently a 2Do user), but t seems like it would fit in very naturally into my workflow and I’d love to see other apps pickup on this (*cough* Things, TeuxDeux). 2Do Lite pulled from App Store for being 2Good
Calendar16 Sun, 10 Oct 2010 17:16:20 UTC +00:00
The Lite version of the excellent 2Do task management app has been pulled from the App Store because it was so good that it was cannibalizing sales of the real 2Do ($6.99). I have a feeling people might be a little ticked off about this move, but developer Guided Ways does seem to have presented their motives pretty well on their forums (via @GuidedWays). The Lite version couldn’t sync, had no alarms, and had a limit of 75 tasks, but that, apparently, was good enough so that a bajillion (not an actual statistic!) people decided to stick to the lite version instead of buying the real deal. I’m still undecided as to how I feel about this. As someone who has already bought 2Do this doesn’t actually affect me, but I also do wonder if they couldn’t have simply scaled the Lite version down. But, then again, that would be kicking Read More
Review: Teux Deux for iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Sep 2010 19:38:29 UTC +00:00
And Now For Something Completely Different. All of the tasks within Teux Deux ($2.99) are rendered in plain text, and you simply tap on them to complete them. There are no fancy fields, tags, or due date fields. But Teux Deux isn’t like Taskpaper (a $9.99 plain text task manager) either. All of your plain text tasks are displayed under specific dates, as if they were being shown right on iCal’s Day View, and you either write tasks up under the date or you drag them there. That’s it. It’s certainly a very minimal task approach and it has taken some getting used to, but I think I may like Teux Deux even more than Things ($9.99) and 2Do ($3.99). One of the things I love most about this app is its layout. All your tasks, the view of the current selected day, and a scrolling bar showing the days of Read More
Epic Win for iPhone: Task List + light RPG rolled into one
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Aug 2010 18:23:55 UTC +00:00
I have yet to decide whether or not Epic Win ($2.99) is really worthwhile as a task manager, but I do know Rexbox and SuperMono have done an absolutely fantastic job of marketing the concept, and I ended up buying the app the moment it hit the Canadian App Store last night. I’ve completed only a few tasks thus far (I cheated a bit and added and insta-completed a few tasks I’d already finished in 2D0), but the interface seems to be quite slick. This isn’t a powerhouse task manager — you won’t find categories or tags, for example — but there are enough basic features to keep things manageable. I could go on a bit more and talk about the light RPG elements and whether or not they’re cool or just gimmicky, but I’ll opt to simply shutup until I gain more experience and level up some more. I also Read More
Sort of a Review: moving back to 2Do 2.0 for iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 16 Aug 2010 19:39:38 UTC +00:00
Despite having been previously burned by the ToDo Sync Helper and having always hated iCal’s approach to task management, I’m trying 2Do 2.0 ($6.99, lite version) out as my full-time task manager…again. This won’t be a complete overview of the app like my last video of the 2.0 release, but we do have a review of 1.0 here and a post on 1.2 here, if you’d like to get acquainted with the app before reading on.I’ve got Things 2Do? (Skip this section if you don’t use the Things task manager) Moving back to 2Do from Things isn’t all that difficult, provided you also use the Things Mac client and plan to sync with iCal. You can tell Things to sync with iCal through the Sync tab in settings, and, although you won’t be able to specify which iCal calendars to sync to, all of the relevant tags and Areas will be Read More
Not So Quick look: 2Do 2.0 for iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 13 Aug 2010 19:25:14 UTC +00:00
[Note: video shows wrong price -- it's actually $6.99] 2Do 2.0 ($6.99, currently $3.99) is the story of a swan that turned into an even prettier and more poweful mecha-swan. I’ve always found Guided Ways’ task manager impressive (Patrick reviewed version 1.0), but this new version completely blows all of 1.x out of the water. The video above is my first attempt at a complete app walkthrough using QuickTime and Ryan Petrich’s Display Recorder ($4.99 on Cydia, Jailbreak required). Read More

Nine iPhone task managers to get you organized
Calendar16 Wed, 26 May 2010 22:48:30 UTC +00:00
I keep sticking with the same combo as Frank. I use ToDo on iphone and ipad syncing to and thru Toodledo. I use Jott and email to feed ToDo. I also use Notebook (also from Appigo) as a note/data keeper/db. It integrates well with iPhone ToDo and Toodledo. Josh Gard I’ve been using Remember The Milk (Pro account) since last fall, after switching from Toodledo. For me to consider a task manager app, it must have a web interface and must be able to sync over the air. In addition, be able to send me push alerts to my iPhone on a per-task basis (ie. some recurring tasks I don’t need alerts for but I still track them on my task list, other important one-off tasks I want push alerts for). While Toodledo also met my requirements, the web interface felt complicated and stuffed with too many features that I simply had no use Read More

Great iPhone app features: Deferring due dates in 2Do
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Apr 2010 16:36:52 UTC +00:00
I recently read a tweet from photographer John Carey (@fiftyfootshadow) about how a lot of tech reviewers seem so jaded about technology and have nothing but complaints and feature requests every time they take a look at something. It’s a slippery slope. So in the spirit of anti-slipperiness, I’ve decided to try and find a few features in various iPhone apps that I really love. They’re not entire app reviews, just small slices of what I think are pure genius inside a particular app. Today’s focus is the “Defer” context menu option in the 2Do task manager. In most of the task management apps I’ve seen, you usually have to dig down to the individual item level before you can fiddle with due dates. 2Do also allows you to edit due dates with a full-size date picker when viewing a single task, but you can also defer tasks right from the Read More

2Do is a gorgeous iPhone task management app
Calendar16 Tue, 26 Jan 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you're already using iCal's built-in todo management, or Outlook's tasks on a Windows machine, and you're just looking for an iPhone app that can synchronize with what you're already using, you should check out 2Do. 2Do is a very well-designed and pretty to-do list manager, with the ability to create multiple lists, set priorities and due dates, notes, URLs, and even default actions such as Call, SMS, Email, Browse, Visit, and Google. It's a pleasure to use, with a very intuitive and pleasing interface. 2Do handles 2-way synchronizing with iCal's basic to-do functionality with the help of an additional free Sync application for your Mac, or with Outlook's tasks function with a free Windows Sync application. I find iCal's built-in to-do management to be clunky and awkward, which isn't 2Do's fault, but does work against it when I'm evaluating what task management app to use. However, if I was on Read More

version 1.2 The 2Do update that Guided Ways released last night is so big, it’s hard to believe it’s a mere dot upgrade. Didn’t we just see v1.1 in December 2009? (We did.) The changes to the app are so numerous that it’s really best to link you to the version history on Guided Way’s website. However, I will discuss some of the biggest changes right here. Tasks are now even more customizable and can hold more information, saved searches can be set as calendars, 2Do now syncs with Outlook 2003/2007 (Win XP or higher needed), and there’s now an online backup system for your task database. Seriously, does this look like a dot upgrade to you? Power to the tasks ToDo’s within 2Do are now more customizable than before. You can now add tags and specific times to tasks. They can also be turned into checklists or projects. Checklists support Read More

I ‘ve got a tasks / ToDo list app that works exceptionally well for me on the desktop and the iPhone “ Things.  So I normally have no interest in todo apps for the iPhone “ but this new one called 2Do caught my eye this weekend, as it has a striking UI and a big set of features, including even push notifications. As you may notice in the image above, some of its key features include: tabbed calendars, sync with iCal, push alarms, drag and drop between calendars, and sharing todos by email. I decided to take a quick look at this one over the weekend, and ended up finding it pretty impressive. love the UI, love that I can quickly tab to any list I want (I'm an inveterate list maker) and drag and drop any todo to and from any list. it's almost a THINGS killer. would love to be able to turn off the badges both on the app icon and inside the list, would love more themes, would love to have lust background color be the same as tap but I know I'm being super nitpicky. great work!!! can't wait for other apps by these guys and updated to this one.
Awesome

Now I can sync my Push Priority needs to iCal and use this app to do the push reminders for me.. Life is Good!! These guy's make great app's!!!  Get it, you will not be disappointed..
Excellent

I used Things for a while but due to my laziness and unwillingness to open the app manually to see what I needed to do, I had to find a todo app with push. I wanted the best one. THIS IS IT. I love the interface. I love the way it's built. I will actually use 2do because of the push and email alerts. They are great. I only have 2 requests of features that are missing. 1. Badge alert customization. It shows a number badge that counts EVERY todo you have. This is confusing. Please make the badge customizable to where you can make it only display the number of todo's for today. 2. Repeating todos. I'd like to be able to create todos that happen frequently. Keep it up developers!
it's a winner :)

man.. between all the amazing apps in the store,,, I can say this is the best of the best.
Too much interface!
trojan16horse 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The cluttered interface ruins this app for me - and the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Using the app is fiddly: all the on screen controls and interface elements just get in the way of the job in hand. Even worse, you can't hide future todos, so your list is cluttered up with stuff you can't work on at the moment.
Needs Work
drend 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Need to be able to enter recurring ToDos. Not very helpful without this. Badge should show ToDos for today not all ToDos in future. Without recurring ToDos, pretty useless.
Still not working

I'm sure it would be a nice application if I could get it to work for me

Simple ... Practical ... Amazing!
Quite Amazing!!!
DbruceG 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is probably the slickest app I've seen. I do wish it had a repeat "to do" option.
Crowded
Qin4ever 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Innovative design but crowded UI. Also, it can't handle repeating tasks. Multiple alarms (text, email, alarm) for the same task is helpful.
Well Done

Awesome App
dtayla 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is awesome but sometimes it feels a little cluttered. Some suggestions: MORE COLOR LABELS!! Definitely a must. The groups are great but we should be able to have projects. For example I have a "Personal" group but I want "House" as a project inside the group. We should also be able to hide default tabs like All. Sync with the Calendar on the iPhone instead of iCal. So MobileMe PC users are accomidated. Swipe to the right to complete app it would make the pencil animation feel right. Swipe to the left to undo. There's no need for there to be an add tab. Simply put a Plus button above the group tabs. Put settings in the Settings.app, you'll hardly use it anyways! Make the done bottom tab a tab at the bottom of the side pane instead. Make a sync all button under the all tab. The feature isn't for everyone! So there you have it guys, the bottom navigation bar is gone and the UI is all the better for it.
Wow

I own todo. In comparison, it's nothing. I own iQuran and iPray as well from this dev and wow. What another flawless app. JazakAllah khair for such an awesome app. Continue doing great work. The app store is worthy with developers like tear guys. This 2do app is by far THE best. It's a steal at this price. No flaws. None. Buy it now. Don't be a fool by waiting.
Awesome

I've owned every to do app, like put things off, and awesome note, but this has everthing in one, plus push notifications. I contacted the developers about adjusting the badge icon settings, and they were quick to reply. Said it's coming in the next update. Best to do app out there!!!!!!!!!
Horrible. Intuitive to whom? A schizophrenic?

I am so sorry that I wasted my money on this piece of junk. I have a Masters degree in science and I still couldn't figure this out--even after struglling with it for an hour. Why can't developers include instructions? Oh yeah, there is a "how to use" page on the settings, but they do not make any sense: they don't tell you how to use it; they only tell you what it can do. Great! I can salivate at all the things it can do; I just will never figure out how to use them. What ever happened to step-by-step instructions? I want my money back! Anyone hoping to find a to-do calendar app that will make their life easier needs to stay away from this one!
And the big deal is...?
sonya8 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't see it. It works, but this is no better than a list app. It's way too basic as a todo list (for me). At least repeating tasks are coming, but no tags? No projects? Not even a simple checkbox? I hate the swipe-to-complete instead of just a tap. The interface is too busy. I find it funny that tapping the button to hide the tabs doesn't extend the list view, but just pushes it over, so you end up with a gap on the right side of the screen! It definitely needs work. Sorry, but this isn't for me.
Could've Been
Josog 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This App is special. The graphics, the usability , the ease of having all available options from one screen are incredible! It could've been a five star app in my book. Unfortunately, you can't email your notes and to-do's to anyone without an iPhone and the same app? "Sharing" via email is short for "forget about communicating with anyone without an iPhone using this app"!!!! Sorry, but not everyone has an iPhone, and I need to be able to send my emails, to-do's or otherwise, to whomever. Please fix this! Sincerely, JG
Not shure why everyone likes it

Misleading
mygmom 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
How silly of me!. For some reason because it has "TABS" for different "CALENDERS" I expected it to have.... CALENDERS. instead it is tabs with notes... VERY DISAPPOINTED. A waste of money to me. Just another note App. Would like to have a refund for false description.
