Occipital launches 360 Panorama for Android!

Stop whatever you’re doing and grab the Occipital’s 360 Panorama app for your Android smartphone (presuming you own a compatible, Gingerbread-powered smartphone). Yeah I know the Ice Cream Sandwich will bring this capability built-in, but I’m sure it won’t work the way 360 Panorama does its job. Occipital relied heavily on OpenGL hardware-accelerated graphics to make the magic happen. Heck their app will work even without a gyroscope which seemingly is impossible since accelerometers alone cannot track rotation — they are simulating a gyroscope using their own camera-based motion tracking algorithms. Impressive! Now the question is whether you think 360 Panorama is worth a buck (99 cents actually). I’m confident it is worth every penny, especially if you’re travelling somewhere and want to bring home the memories in a way that wasn’t possible before (at least with an Android smartphone)… So what are you waiting for – hit the link below Read More
Favorite Four Apps for Photo Effects
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Nov 2011 18:30:12 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on November 9th, 2011 We look at four classic favorite apps for creating or editing photos with stunning special effects. Last week we looked at the best camera replacement apps for the iPhone native app. So, this week we wanted to continue the theme, this time looking at apps that focus on adding those ever-popular effects and filters. Many of the choices feature a camera replacement component, but all do unique things to produce end results that are anything but the average cell camera shot, no matter how high the resolution. All of these apps will make even casual photographers look like virtual experts. Instagram Instagram is all about effects and sharing and it’s completely free. This long-time user favorite allows shutter bugs to shoot right from the app or use existing images in the photo album and easily add custom filters. Most photo apps have social media Read More
Homescreens – Oktober 2011 (iPhone + iPad)

Außerdem verstecken sich in Read More
Improving Your App Store Rating
Calendar16 Tue, 16 Aug 2011 21:27:47 UTC +00:00
by on 16. Aug, 2011 in Lets face it, 80% of the apps out there are garbage. They either don’t solve a problem well, they were poorly built, or just don’t work at all. These apps deserve bad public ratings and don’t belong anywhere on the app store charts. Then there’s the other 20% that are backed by passionate designers and developers changing how we interact with technology. People like Mobile Orchard readers These apps deserve recognition. Even great apps get negative feedback, and that’s OK. Feedback is a great thing when we can learn and improve from it. What’s broken is that when someone leaves a negative review in the app store, it scars your app for life, you can’t respond to it, and you can’t learn more about the problem in order to fix it quickly. Most of the developers I know building great apps tell me how app Read More
Occipital announces investment, new hires
Calendar16 Thu, 11 Aug 2011 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Occipital, the company behind the popular iPhone and iPad app 360 Panorama, announced on Wednesday that it received US$7 million in venture funding. 360 Panorama lets you take panorama pictures by shooting a series of pictures at one and stitching them on the phone before saving them to your camera roll. Besides a healthy infusion of cash, Occipital is also expanding beyond its iOS application to create a computer vision platform that other developers can use. Occipital will create the backbone and developers will use their creative skills to produce innovative apps with advanced imaging and camera features like eye tracking. Occipital has also added four new members to its board of directors including Jason Mendelson and Brad Feld of a venture capital firm Foundry Group, Manu Kumar of venture capital firm K9 Ventures and Gary Bradski, the creator of OpenCV, an open source computer vision library. Suppose you're at at your desk with a MacBook and an iPhone. You want to check cinema screening times at your local multiplex and the weather forecast so you'll know if you'll need a jacket or not. Which device do you reach for? If you choose the MacBook, you'll need to go to a cinema listings service and enter your zip code to find your multiplex, then repeat the process on a weather tracking site (unless your Dashboard already includes appropriate widgets for that data, in which case it's one keystroke away). On the iPhone, you just load a couple of apps, which know where you are so can show you the local data automatically. This exact scenario happened to me earlier, and I surprised myself by reflexively reaching for the iPhone, without thinking. Somewhere along the way it started to feel like the logical device to use for this sort Read More

’360 Panorama’ – die etwas andere Foto-Perspektive
Calendar16 Fri, 20 May 2011 09:38:23 UTC +00:00

Create & Share 3D Panoramas With iPhone App
Calendar16 Wed, 20 Apr 2011 13:00:27 UTC +00:00
by The panoramic capture has become accessible to amateur photographers by way of mobile app makers. The new iPhone app UScapeit, available Wednesday, is the latest of the bunch and makes capturing and sharing the perfect 3D panorama as simple as shooting a video. The free application, developed by EveryScape, merely requires the user to shoot video of the location, place or attraction he or she wishes to see transformed into a 3D panoramic image. UScapeit users can also choose to shoot multiple videos, called “views,” from different perspectives. The only catch is that video capture process feels a bit unnatural; the user is instructed to hold the mobile device steady and turn in a circle to capture a 360 degree shot. Though the capture process may feel awkward, the final product is an exceptional and life-like 3D rendering of the 360-degree shot. The user can choose to share the capture Read More
Microsoft’s Bing team today released Photosynth, a free mobile app for camera-enabled iOS devices that creates spherical, panoramic images. Captured photos can be shared through Facebook, Bing Maps or freely hosted on the Photosynth.net website. Photosynth is now appearing in the iTunes App Store and the next version will be released for Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices. Having taken panoramic pictures in the past on an Android handset, first with the Motorola Droid  and then on later phones, I first thought Photosynth was just a rehash of that functionality. But it’s not. Instead of a linear set of horizontal images like the ones I created prior, Photosynth creates a near-360 degree image. You simply snap, snap, snap different frames of the world around you and the software quickly creates an immersive image that can be panned around. The official Photosynth video illustrates both the app’s usage and output: I installed Photosynth Read More
Photosynth now 'cool enough' for iOS
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Apr 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's funny how times change. In 2008 Microsoft released Photosynth for Windows, an impressive technology that allowed the stitching of several photos into one large panorama. Microsoft said at the time that they weren't "cool enough" to run on Mac OS. Well, I guess times have changed, and Apple has eaten Microsoft's lunch in smartphones and tablets, so now Photosynth is available for at least the iPhone. The app was released today, and it's free, so I gave it a quick checkout in my neighborhood. You take an image, and then move the camera in any direction. The app continues capturing pictures, and when you are ready, it stitches them all together and saves the resulting panorama to your camera roll. It works pretty well, although it got a bit lost doing a 360 degree sweep. Also, Photosynth sometimes wanted to take a picture while I was still moving, and I Read More

Favorite Four: Creative iPhone Camera Apps

By Chris Nitz on March 9th, 2011 Some of the best camera apps for the iPhone! Love it or hate it, the iPhone is a big player when it comes to on the go photography. Many people no longer buy point and shoot cameras as they already have their iPhone with them everywhere they go. Apple has dedicated a section of the App Store to Camera and Photography apps. There are even photographers who have dedicated columns to “iPhoneography.” If you happen to fit into the group of users that loves taking photos with your iPhone, but want something to help make those photos more unique, we have four apps perfect for taking your photos further. Hipstamatic:Hipstamatic was one of the first apps to take the iPhone camera and give it a retro feel. Now this app has become a must own for many people. App maker Occipital has provided a working demo of Apple's newly integrated gyroscope support in Mobile Safari using images created by 360 Panorama, Occipital's great panoramic photography App for iOS 4.2. The site, when visited by an iOS device with a gyroscope and running iOS 4.2.1, allows you to view photographs taken with the 360 Panorama App by simply moving the device. Based on your iPhone's orientation the photograph will follow. I had to keep my iPhone fairly vertical in order for the gyroscope to read properly, but the experience was pretty fun considering I had to spin around in my chair to see the entire photograph. With Occipital's software, you can create an entire 360-degree image and share it with friends via Twitter or e-mail, or add it to your Camera Roll for viewing later. According to TNW Apps interviewing Occipital co-founder Vikas Reddy, 360 Panorama has been the No. Read More
Occipital, a company that has been getting lots of attention for their iPhone application “360 Panorama” that utilizes the built in gyroscope and camera inside Apple’s Jesus Phone to make taking panorama images easier, has discovered that the Safari browser, as of version 4.2 of iOS, supports reading information from the gyroscope. The headline used by when announcing the discovery “Hidden Safari Mobile feature reveals augmented reality capability” is a bit misleading since augmented reality implies that in addition to the gyroscope, the camera and compass are also put to use. This new found feature shows that Apple is not only working relentlessly to make the best mobile smartphone platform, and then with App Store one of the finest distribution methods ever to be conceived, but that they also care about web applications and fully expect the browser to house the same rich types of applications that would otherwise be written Read More
Secret Gyroscope Support Found in Mobile Safari
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Dec 2010 06:17:11 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 10:17 pm.   While creating their latest app, Occipital stumbled onto a hidden gem in Mobile Safari: gyroscope support. The iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G running 4.2+ can both take advantage of this secret feature, which allows users to move their body to turn the content in the browser. Occipital’s 360 Panorama application can be used to photograph and upload a 360 degree scene and share it with others, who can use their device’s built in gyroscope to pan around the photo from within Mobile Safari. At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be any other service that takes advantage of this feature, so Occipital has put together a demo for users to test it out. Some details: Developers will probably use this newfound technology to create some very interesting websites. Read More
We've talked about 360 Panorama before -- it's a cool app that lets you capture 360° panoramic photos in real time by just moving your iPhone around in a circle. The $0.99 app (available here) has been out for a while, but keeps receiving amazing updates that improve its functionality and wow factor. Now the wizards at Occipital have figured out a way for you to view those panoramas as if you're actually standing at the site where they were taken. You simply open up Mobile Safari on an iPhone 4 (or any other gyroscope-equipped iPhone running iOS 4.2), point to a URL where the photo is stored, and then move the phone around. The gyroscope is detected by the browser, and then your movements control where in the panorama you are looking. The standard reverse-pinch gesture lets you zoom into a panorama, while pinching zooms out. All using HTML 5 Read More

Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)

[app] 360 Panorama – der Rundumblick
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Dec 2010 20:38:30 UTC +00:00
‘‘ (2.39 €; App Store-Link) oder ‘You Gotta See This!‘ (1.59 €; App Store-Link) verfolgen Read More

We first looked at 360 Panorama back in July when it debuted against other panoramic photo apps, including Boinx's You Gotta See This and Debacle Software's Pano. On sale now for just US$0.99 (regular price $2.99), Occipital's panorama application has been updated to add what developer Jeff Powers calls "streetview sharing." This new sharing feature (a "hosted immersive viewing experience") allows you to upload your panoramas and access them from any web browser, whether that browser supports Flash or not. When viewed, you can flick and drag to see the panorama from any angle. Follow through the "read more" link to view a sample embedded panorama that I created at a local cemetery, which showcases the hosted interaction. You can easily share your panoramic creations with family, friends, colleagues and clients. All they need is a browser. A new approach to iPhone panoramas
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Jul 2010 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
There are plenty of iPhone apps that shoot panorama photos. You take a picture. Move to the left or right, and after you have 3 or 4 images the panorama software stitches the images together. Now, Occipital is offering 360 Panorama, a different approach to getting wide, or even 360 degree images. The app is dead simple. Click on a button to start the process, then slowly turn left or right. You appear to be taking one continuous image, and as you move you can see the image filling in on a grid. You don't do any stitching, the software does it in nearly real time. You can go wide, or even shoot vertical images. Or you can do both, panning up and down, and moving left or right. The image will fill in. It's pretty cool to watch. When you tap 'save' the image goes to your camera roll. The Read More

good potential, but some flaws
jdbonnin 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I really like the idea of this app, but there are some things that would put it over the top. First, there should be a level reset button. Sometimes I will start the app while holding my phone perfectly straight, the globe will be at an angle and while turning around while holding the phone straight the globe will change angles when it should remain centered. Second, I would love to have the ability to reopen pictures I have taken with the program and move around them. Either by swiping or the gyroscope, have a fullscreen image of what I took that moved as moved the phone. Sort of like looking through the veiw finder of camera after you left the place you took the photo.
Great 1st version!
HiasBoston 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The real-time panorama is awesome. It's great as a demo but needs to at least be higher resolution to make it useful. Perhaps a post-process option for the high-res version (since you don't want to wreck the real-time experience)? Exposure compensation at edges would also be nice but not a must-have.

And it does not work as I'd hoped. I was expecting sony's pano tech in an app. The picture stitching is horrible and jagged. The gyro is also slowly twisting the image despite being used on a stable tripod. Please fix this potentially 5 star app. I look fwd to an update
Terrible
Ken Laszlo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
There is a huge black gap in all if my images. I'm on an iPhone 4, and this app is a waste of money if this isn't fixed soon.
Great app!
wsul 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I loved the RedLaser app so when I saw this launch I had to buy it. Really fun app!! Unlike anything else I've tried before.
Like the speed but v1 needs serious improvements
Jofte 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I can't get this to do 360 degrees, it's always coming back full circle after approximately 270 deg. Picture quality is not great compared to what I get using desktop apps for photo stitching; apparently there's no detection of straight lines to compensate for camera movements. Based on the developer's reputation I am looking forward to see this app being improved.
Poor quality stitch on the 3GS
Pano-pioneer 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Disappointing stitches on the 3GS, maybe the gyros on the iPhone 4 help? I expected better the makers of the excellent Red Laser.
Doesn't work
Product manager 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
My pictures all come up split, with the left of the scene on the right of the photo, the right of the scene on the left, and a big black gap in the middle. Fast, but a waste because it doesn't work. If you pay for this, consider it an advance for better things to come.
Cool idea, needs work
Greg7388 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is such a great idea, but there is still more work required. If this was a free app, it would get 4 or 5 stars, but I paid $3 for it, and I feel like it's still a big buggy. Honestly, it's extremely cool, and you might want to drop the $3 just to try it. But if you're looking for quality panoramas, you're better off using the built in camera and AutoStitch. If you want live panoramas, this is the best app for that (so far).
Awful quality
Ekholbrook 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Wow... This is just a horrible quality ap
5 big ones
CruisinInMy64 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
credit where credit is due. this is a 5 star app. it's going to get used a lot. who doesn't want to use this for a nice outdoors photo.
Slick interface, poor output
Photar 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I had really high hopes for this app, but it doesn't work anywhere near as well as Autostitch.
Not as good as Photosynth
Huskehn 3.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
Does not stitch panoramas as well as Photosynth, and Photosynth is free. This app works exactly like Photosynth does.
Cool!
Agha of Oleo 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
Wish I had had this at the Grand Canyon years ago. Guess I'll just have to go back now!Great app.
Pretty cool when it works
John Boyle 3.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
It's pretty cool how it integrates with the gyroscope (even though the stitching isn't perfect). It really annoys me when I waste 5 minutes taking a 360 pano only to have it crash immediately after without letting me save or even saving my state in the app. It needs at least some sort of auto-save because I've lost too many panos.
Splendid
2ec4m3 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
Real 360 Panorama. Love it.Update:Runs smoothly on ios 5. Nice comment feature.
So cool
Fish netter 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
Easy to use. It would be much better for me with a tripod, but the panorama looked good just taking the shot standing in one place and turning.
Awesome!
Mikslash 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
Love this app! No need to try any others. Great design. Great support.
Why isn't this a standard app?
Catch that disc 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
This app is freaking awesome. Works well on my 4s. You can save and email "flat" images in standard format to anyone who can view a pic or send a 360 version to others with this app. You can view and rotate by touch or by turning your phone to get that "it feels like I'm actually there" sense. Freaking sweet app!! A bargain at $.99.
What?!!!
Spyweb 2.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
I don't what the good reviews are for, this app doesn't shoot good pics, they are always messed up on lighting. Do me a favor and get PANO!
Why you need my location
Foot guy 1.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
I'm trying to like this app. Why does it DEMAND you turn on your location to work? I did not get this to Share with the world. It's hard to email, hard to save and Worthless in forest, ocean, away from wifi or 3G. Fix it
Great panoramic pics
GadZookFilms 5.0 stars Version: 4.0.5
