ABC Player
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Dec 2011 21:14:15 UTC +00:00
The ABC Player app works on the iPad and lets you watch ABC TV shows for free with sponsored ads. You can also find past episodes and a schedule of upcoming shows. The watching feature works great and even better with iPad mirroring on your TV. There is no way to send just the audio to AirPlay speakers. The app also has the ability to remember where you left off so you can come back and finish a show where you left off. You can use it either over WiFi or 3G. Viewing shows in portrait view lets you browse other episodes under the video, or you can rotate the iPad to landscape view and the video will zoom to fill the entire screen. There are a few tabs to get started in the Featured section with slideshows including Most Popular, Latest Episodes, and Comedies. The schedule tab is broken down Read More
TiPb Picks of the Week for October 1, 2011
Calendar16 Sat, 01 Oct 2011 18:01:28 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Saturday, Oct 1, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I’ve often felt that the native iOS calendar (particularly on the iPhone) isn’t really very good, and I’ve longed for a good update to it with every new release of iOS. As such, I’ve tried many calendar replacement apps over the years, and while some are fantastic, I always find myself gravitating back to the simple look of the native calendar. Lately I’ve been using a new app though, and I’m feeling pretty good about Read More

A friend just picked up a shiny new iPad and asked me for my app recommendations.   Obviously, we get similar questions often, so I drew up a list of the apps that I use often that most any iPad user might consider. Favorite Four: Free Video Content
Calendar16 Wed, 25 May 2011 17:30:58 UTC +00:00
By Kevin Stout on May 25th, 2011 This week my favorite four lists my favorite apps for watching free videos. Most come to 148apps to learn which apps to spend their hard earned dollars on. Today I’ll mix it up, because my favorite four are apps with free video content. Crackle Crackle, a division of Sony, adds 20 new movies and TV episodes to its app monthly. It’s 100% free and a must-have app for anyone. It’s always there for me to just whip out and watch whenever I don’t really have a preference. Some of my current favorites available are 21, The Nines, The Karate Kid I and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Wither iPad? A Testimonial On Its Usefulness
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Mar 2011 17:45:00 UTC +00:00
(image source: Apple, Inc) With the release of the iPad 2, there has been a lot of commentary on the overall usefulness of the iPad. Even amongst the iSource staff, there is some debate as to whether or not the iPad is a truly useful device, or merely an expensive toy. Here’s my take. When the iPad was announced a year ago, I had no plans at all to buy it. Like many others, I concluded that it was little more than a large iPod Touch; and I simply didn’t see a need for one, especially considering that I had a perfectly usable iPhone. When my friend Mike got one, I played around with it a bit; but ultimately, I came to the same conclusion – a big iPod. Much later, when I started traveling for work again, I finally realized how useful the iPad could be and decided to take Read More
iSmashPhone List: Best Entertainment Apps of 2010
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Dec 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
The iPad makes a great entertainment device. Not only does it play games, it allows you to watch movies and TV shows. Apps like Netflix and the ABC Player are two favorites for that reason alone. It really is a great way to watch movies. What's more, Apps like Netflix work on an iPod Touch and an iPhone as well. Yes, it's a small screen, but it still looks great, and it's a nice way to watch a movie without disturbing others. Then there are Apps that stream music, Apps like Pandora radio. Entertainment-type Apps are some of our favorites. Let's take a look at the ones we love the most:   This is the ultimate entertainment App on iOS. If you have a Netflix account and an iOS device, you need Netflix. If you have an iOS device, but no Netflix account…you need to consider jumping on board. If anything, Read More
HBO iPad app scheduled to arrive in six months
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Aug 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Do you need to catch up with Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm? Do you want to re-watch that interview from Real Sports? Soon, you'll be able to do just that on your iPad. HBO Co-President Eric Kessler said that the premium cable channel is planning on releasing an iPad app (dubbed HBO Go) that will enable viewers to view a library of up to 800 hours per month of the channel's movies and TV shows. Best of all, if you're already a paying HBO subscriber, you can access content on the iPad app for free. The content streaming app ecosystem on the iPad includes ABC Player, Netflix and Hulu Plus, and HBO Go is set to join this space. HBO plans to release HBO Go for the iPad in six months, which means that the app will likely be on the App Store sometime during the early part of 2011. Read More
iPad App Roundup: 6 Television & Movie Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:55:12 UTC +00:00
If you’re a movie and/or television buff, then the iPad may be your new best friend. We’ve got a round up of six different apps to help you consume your favorite televisions shows and movies. Enjoy! Netflix has made a name for itself with its excellent service, and many were surprised when it announced it would be coming to the iPad before the iPhone (on launch day, too). The Netflix app is basically a one-window browser that loads a tailored version of the site, allowing you to watch any movie in its instant-watch collection. You can also manage your movie queue, adding or deleting movies as you please. The app isn’t very polished, but it works. I’ve watched the entire three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on it without incident. The app is free; the subscription, however, isn’t, and it’ll run you $9 a month. There’s a free 30-day trial, Read More

Howard Stern digs his iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 21 May 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Oh, my. Yeah, we know...another "celebrity x enjoys his/her iPad post" is hardly riveting reading, but this story is worth a mention. Any long-time Stern fan knows that 1.) He dislikes Apple and 2.) He's adverse to new tech gadgets. Unless he's pimping Sirius/XM hardware, you won't hear much fanboy gadget-gushing from Howard (he famously clings to Lotus Notes for much of his tech-based communication). This week on the show, he talked about the 64GB 3G iPad he received as a gift from Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Calling it "pretty cool," Howard mentioned reading the New York Times with it and taking screenshots of his wife, Beth O, appearing on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live via the ABC Player app. This story is less about the celebrity and more about the iPad winning over yet another unlikely customer. Good job, Apple! Read More
CBS will roll out HTML5 compliant portal for iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 11 May 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Watching TV on an iPad is a joy. Prop it up, plug in some speakers, turn it on its side and sit back. You can carry it with you as you move about and the epic battery life permits episode after episode. The only drawback right now is the lack of content (I'm looking at you, Hulu). Fortunately, networks like CBS are keen to get on board. This week, CBS VP Anthony Soohoo described his company's plans to create an iPad-compatible portal in an interview with NewTeeVee (video after the break). For now, Soohoo explains, full episodes of Survivor and clips from selected shows are available in HTML5. The network are taking what they learn in getting those shows out to bring their other titles to the HTML5 standard, and expect to achieve full content parity in time for the fall premieres. While ABC is using an app to distribute shows Read More
ABC iPad app now supports 3G video
Calendar16 Tue, 04 May 2010 18:21:57 UTC +00:00
Just as we expected, ABC has released an update of its Player application that will stream videos over wireless data networks. The app gives you access to a variety of ABC’s shows on demand with some ads. The program is quite polished and it has a slick user interface. On the down sides, not all of the shows’ back catalogs are available and there’s some inconsistent orderings of shows. We’re still testing it out and will let you know how the video quality is over 3G but the WiFi version had some high-quality videos with cool features like high-speed scrubbing. While we work on a video of the 3G version, check out the demo below for a walk through of the app on a WiFi-only iPad. – Download ABC Player app for iPad (free) [iTunes Link] Marin Perez has torture tested cell phones and smartphones for industry leaders like CNET and Read More

3G-Enabled ABC iPad App Hits The Store
Calendar16 Tue, 04 May 2010 10:30:27 UTC +00:00
A short heads up to notify you all that, as reported yesterday, ABC has indeed upgraded its iPad app to support streaming over 3G and it’s now available on the iPad App Store. Due to Apple’s restrictions, expect however the quality to strongly differ from the WiFi stream. Furthermore, be careful if you went with the 250mb data package as video streaming tends to be quite heavy. Read More

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G im US-Verkauf
Calendar16 Sun, 02 May 2010 17:48:24 UTC +00:00
ABC deems ABC Player app for iPad to be an early success
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Apr 2010 10:05:17 UTC +00:00
ABC has released some stats on the ABC Player app for the iPad, and at the same time they have noted that they are pleased with the initial results. “Disney-ABC television President Anne Sweeney says the network is pleased with the initial results.” According to the details in the WSJ article, in the first 10 days since the release of the app it was downloaded 205,000 times. But more importantly, those that downloaded the app have since been responsible for watching at least part of 650,000 television episodes. Which in the end means that those users have generated “several million” ad impressions for ABC. Now I am sure you can understand them being pleased. I think this should entice other networks to release a similar app. Read More

One source says that next year’s iPhone, unofficially and presumably dubbed iPhone 5, will be a It seems that Apple decided to go ahead and give the go to iOS 5.0.1 earlier than we had initially thought. Wi-Fi Edition: Can An iPad Replace Your iPhone?
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Apr 2010 21:52:06 UTC +00:00
Posted 04/08/2010 at 1:52pm | by J.R. Bookwalter A recent survey of new iPad owners sounding off on Twitter revealed that a whopping 26 percent were unhappy about the fact that the device couldn’t replace their iPhone. That got us thinking: What would it be like to spend a day with only the iPad? With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We have yet to find any iPhone apps that don’t also run on the iPad -- even seemingly more complex ones such as SlingPlayer Mobile or Skype work just fine -- so most of the iPhone functionality can already be duplicated just by installing the same apps you already use. It’s Not a Phone, Silly The biggest trick Read More

So, you got your shiny new iPad on Saturday and you’ve done all the basic stuff on it: web browsing, email, video. But now that the awesomeness of that has worn off, it’s time to get some new apps. Here are the ones you should buy first. Imagine holding the entire Netflix instant watch database in your hands. This is it. The app is free, but you’ll need a Netflix subscription if you don’t already have one. IMDb is an iPad-friendly version of the Internet Movie Database. So, while you’re watching movies with Netflix, you can settle arguments about them with this. Free. A perfectly optimized version of ABC’s website, so you can watch the iPad on Modern Family with an actual iPad. (Ironically, ABC currently has a Flash banner on its website advertising this app.) The popular browser-based content discovery extension has its first foray into the mobile app market. Free. Is the iPad Magical? Our First Impressions
Calendar16 Sat, 03 Apr 2010 20:35:39 UTC +00:00
After a surprisingly short wait in line at our local Apple Store, where about 100 people lined up for their reserved iPads - and another 100 who didn't have a reservations - we finally took possession of our very own Apple tablet. We will take a closer look at all the apps, hardware and iPad-optimized web sites over the course of the next few days, but here are our first impressions after spending some quality time with the iPad. Without a doubt, the first thing you will notice is the sheer speed of the iPad. Web pages render very fast, switching from landscape to portrait mode only takes a second - even in image and video-heavy apps like the Popular Science app or the ABC Player - and apps open extremely fast. The device itself is light for its size, feels very solid, but still feels a bit heavy when holding Read More
