Favorite Four: Weather Watching Apps For Spring
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Mar 2012 21:59:13 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on March 7th, 2012 A look at our four favorite apps for checking out the weather outside and the weather coming our way this spring. Whether you chalk it up to climate change or not, it’s been one heck of a strange winter. Now it’s March, notorious for its leonine bitter entry and mild sheepish departure. With everything else turned on its head, who knows what’s in store as we make our annual seasonal transition. We’ve put together our favorite four iOS weather apps to keep you informed of what’s coming your way as we bid goodbye to old man winter. AccuWeather for iPhone From AccuWeather.com comes a feature rich app which bears the same name. Accuweather for iPhone provides local and international hourly and 15-day forecasts with radar animations, satellite imagery and storm warnings. Cool features include Pin Location for tracking friends and family, social media griping, Read More

Great App from a Great Development Team
slykryck 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
Thankfully, the developers are extremely active and are monitoring people's requests. They pushed out an update to fix any major issues after only one day! I hope they continue to add to the application over time. Now the application works flawlessly. This app is just plain beautiful and one of the best weather applications I have ever seen. You can actually get a very quick look at the weather, but there is also more information if you want to see it. Even better, the app is just plain fun to play with. Definitely check it out.
GREAT!
GoldnDoodle 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
This is a GREAT Weather APP. I especially like the HOURLY details circular dial feature. Here's an idea for an Alarm Clock that I would like for my iPAD. Take your forecast page of this APP, move the current conditions down to the first row of the extended forecast, then put a digit Alarm Clock in the position where the current conditions are at. I would love to be awaken to an Alarm Clock with your great graphics showing me the current conditions and the forecast. Ideally, the portion of the display with the clock would be lit up all night, while the portion with the weather info would be dark during the night. When the alarm came on the entire display would light up showing the weather conditions and forecast, and a basic alarm sound would go off. I would pay for that APP if you could make it!
Excellent Graphics
thetoothfairy 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
Being a graphic artist I love apps like this one... the graphics are beautiful! I enjoy apps with great graphics and do what they are supposed to do...
Pretty, but no precip percentage in hourly forecast
zieroh 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
This is a very beautiful application, well laid out, and has some very novel user interface elements. However, the application is lacking the one thing I rely on most: the chance of precipitation on an hour-by-hour basis. That information is a staple of every other weather app and website on the planet, yet AccuWeather has chosen to leave that out. As a motorcycle rider, detailed hour-by-hour precipitation forecast -- in the form of a percentage -- is vital information. Without it, I can't use this app.
Thanks for a flawless app
epsilonz 5.0 stars Version: 1
Thanks for updating the application after only one day. Please keep updating it this often. The application works flawlessly. Adding locations and you can switch quickly just by clicking on the city name in the top right. I love switching between locations and seeing the weather change instantly in the other screens. Really love how fun this app is to play with; actually makes the weather fun! Keep up the good work. Bottomline, great app.
Nice looking, has one bug so far
VTCS1 3.0 stars Version: 1
Looks nice, would be happy with it but a bug currently doesn't let you add cities in landscape mode. If you switch to portrait mode you will have location services and the list of search results will show up properly.
UI needs help
Tomball 3.0 stars Version: 1.01
It's a gorgeous app but I've not found a way to flip between locations in the forecast window except to tap the funky icon in the lower right, scroll five screens over from forecast to settings, tap the settings icon, tap on another Stored Location - followed by tapping the icon in the lower right, scrolling five screens back to forecast, tapping Forecast. I should be able to flip between locations in the Forecast window like I do in the iPhone version. Also, like the iPhone version, I'd like to be able to get to the window to add and manage locations with one tap.
Very crash-happy, can't add locations
Brad Smith 1.0 stars Version: 1
I tried out AccuWeather because it seemed like the most complete weather app out yet. Sadly it is terribly crash-prone and attempting to add any locations to the list doesn't work (just a black screen rather than a list to select one after entering your search term). As for the rest of the app, it's functional but awkward. My biggest complaint is that the settings are so hard to get to and buried where you don't think to look. The graphic design is ok, but lacks the polish of Apple and many other top-tier iPhone/iPad developers. Hopefully AccuWeather will fix the big bugs and it will at least be functional, but for now I am back to the search for a good weather app.
Not Tested??
Futchka 2.0 stars Version: 1
Can't add new locations. Was this not tested properly before release???
Not very useful... New locations cannot be added
Beebol 2.0 stars Version: 1
A pretty looking App... but it has a glaring bug, you cannot add your own locations. Until this is fixed, users will be stuck with only the default locations of New York and London.
Horrible
Ted357 1.0 stars Version: 1
You can't add your location. Useless.
Rushed Out The Door
TomSawyer_ 2.0 stars Version: 1
It doesn't work very well in landscape mode but this app can be fixed with some updates. It'd be nice if they could let you flip through different cities as easily as the native iPhone weather app but with the better accuweather info.
ui is wonderful
gorbett 4.0 stars Version: 1.01
I love the look of this weather app but wished the forecasts had more detail in them like weatherbug. I'll keep with this one since I am not a big fan of the weatherbug ui but hope they add more detailed forecasts (it would be nice to be able to click the day and get more information).
Missing hourly wind detail
googull 2.0 stars Version: 1.01
The hourly clock is cute but please give us the day at a glance putting hourly wind information back on the page. I am a sailor, wind is crucial!
Best Weather App for iPad!
Mac Musician 4.0 stars Version: 1.01
This is the best Weather App for iPad. If you want to show off your new iPad, this is the best Weather app. Great Quality and UI! Much faster than Weather.com (Slow) and better than WeatherBug (Info too small, 70% map image). WeatherHD is just a picture with current temp. My only issue is that the Day/Date font is too small. If they change that, they get the final star! ps... pay the 99 cents to get rid of the pop up in the free version! Worth it! pss unless you’re a sailor or airplane pilot, you don’t need hourly wind info
Pretty awesome
MonkSEALPup 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
While it's not as pretty or as flashy as Weather HD, this app seems to be one of the best weather apps for the iPad, especially with today's patch. Dare I say it's the best weather app so far? Perhaps it's too early in the iPad game for such a sweeping statement.
New locations
PortraitBoy 3.0 stars Version: 1
GUYS - I too have had trouble adding locations - just go to portrait mode instead of landscape and the app will work fine! Not the best solution, but in the short term it is a good workaround.
Slightly Buggy and Crash Happy
diagmedphys 3.0 stars Version: 1
Had application crash within seconds or starting it. Trouble adding locations-- Can't find major cities
Pathetic
D Mann 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
The free iPhone app is ten times better. This is a waste of the iPad's screen size. I think it needs an entirely new interface. Regardless, it needs improvement.
Great app! One complaint
nicolasitunes 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
I love the look and feel of the app. The weather is beautifully displayed. The one complaint I have is to remove the 'news feed' section from the main forecast page. Or at least have an option in settings to turn it off.
Almost great
AbMagFab 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
Looks great - except in landscape mode. Then you only get the forecast, no current weather like at the top of every portrait screen! Fix this and it's a 5!
Looks great but could use more details
Alexlfm 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
As this app is currently it's not bad but could defiantly use an update. The Main forecast page is great however it offers no way to be able to see the details (winds, past history, hourly, etc) for each day like you can on the website. I wish you could tap on a day for more details. As others have said the hourly forecast needs a similiar update to show you the percip amount and chance per hour. The radar should be able to be zoomed as well. As it stands now this is probably the best app for getting the basic forecast on the iPad, and it looks great. If the developers add the ability to see more details and move/zoom on the radar, it could be great.
