Will Apple make iMovie for interactive books?
Calendar16 Mon, 16 Jan 2012 20:40:28 UTC +00:00
A page from "Alice for the iPad" by Atomic Antelope Since before Apple announced its education-oriented press event taking place this week, there’s been some speculation — including here — that a logical step would be to start selling digital textbooks directly through its iBookstore. It would make sense because Apple needs a way to juice iBook sales, it has a fantastic e-textbook reader in the iPad and because, well, what else would you announce at a small “education” event in New York City, the center of publishing? It turns out, it might not be that complicated. To begin with, if it were about books, it’s a little odd that many in the publishing business don’t know anything about what Apple’s about to announce. What if what the company reveals on Thursday is more consumer-oriented with an educational edge to it? It could be a publishing platform for building and making interactive Read More

5 Classic Children’s Tales Reinvented for the iPad
Calendar16 Sun, 12 Dec 2010 15:53:19 UTC +00:00
As anyone who has seen this video of a 2-year-old using an iPad knows, Apple’s famed touchscreen device has proven an intuitive, interactive learning tool for children. Yet creating apps for children — whether that’s musical games, learning exercises for children with autism or full-featured e-books — is no easy feat. Fixing children’s attention on an app requires a high degree of ingenuity, interactivity and, most importantly, variety. Josh Koppel, chief creative officer of Scrollmotion (the company that developed Esquire‘s and O, The Oprah Magazine‘s iPad apps, among others), says that the key to making a great children’s app is “to make play possible throughout the app in unexpected places” while remaining respectful of the original material. This criteria is especially valid for classic children’s books, many of which have been given new life in iPad form. I brought an iPad on a recent trip to Greece and perused a number Read More
It's only been half a year since its introduction, but the iPad has already become a major player in the field of assistive technology, helping disabled people communicate. A number of studies are underway (and many more are in the planning stages) to offer much-needed data on the effectiveness of the iPad and other iOS devices in this area. A few days ago, The New York Times ran a piece about the implications of the iPad to the disabled community. The Times tells the story of Owen Cain, a victim of a degenerative disease called spinal muscular atrophy. He acquired the disease as an infant, and there is no known cure for it. Although his parents bought him a number of computer devices to make his life more pleasant, they were all failures -- until he met the iPad. With his arms in slings, Owen was able to touch an icon Read More

Kindle App for iPhone, iPad Now Does Audio and Video
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Jun 2010 16:35:26 UTC +00:00
Amazon announced today its Kindle application for Apple mobile devices including the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, now offers embedded video and audio clips within its e-books. At launch time, there are just thirteen titles sporting the new functionality, including a cookbook augmented by video demos and a nature guide called Bird Songs that lets you read about - and hear - various bird calls. But this is only the beginning, says Amazon. "We look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create...using the new functionality," said Dorothy Nicholls, director of Amazon's Kindle unit. While seemingly minor, the update gives Amazon an immediate advantage in the race to be the e-reader of choice for digital customers. In Amazon's world, it's not necessarily about having the number one hardware device for consuming digital text, it's about having the number one platform, which is where the iPhone and iPad apps come into play. Seven ways the iPad is a boon for book lovers
Calendar16 Mon, 10 May 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Fellow TUAW blogger Michael Grothaus gave us his take on utilizing the iPad as an ebook reader over the weekend. It's is a good look into some of the down sides of ebook readers like the iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader, et. al. I'm the type of bibliophile that reads a lot of different things at once. I'll be reading a couple of novels, along with several volumes of manga, at a time -- going back and forth as I feel like reading the particular book. While I do agree that traditional books aren't going anywhere soon, there are some rather big positives the iPad does bring to the literary world. I am in the process of launching a webcomic that requires a lot of research on literature that's already in the public domain, such as "The Wizard of Oz" with a few swipes. I had the initial book in the series, Read More
99 Awesome iPhone & iPad Apps You Must Download

Posted 04/29/2010 at 1:56pm | by Ray Aguilera With 185,000 apps and counting, the App Store is a vast warehouse of digital goodies for your iPhone (and now iPad too). But like most mega-marts, the sheer size of it all makes the good stuff harder to find. We’ve scoured the Store, and found the best apps to help you use your iPhone to it’s fullest potential. Whether it’s games you seek, or productivity tools, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, there really is an app for that, no matter what that is. The iPhone and iPod touch brought back fun to videogaming, with developers focussing on innovation, affordability, and novelty. Touchscreen and accelerometer controls also force designers to think different, resulting in games that are a glorious collision of classic and cutting-edge gameplay and technology. --Craig Grannell Steph Thirion · $2.99 Eliss is the perfect game for the iPhone’s Read More
Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Even though we don’t buy all or even most of our music from the iTunes Store, we give Apple serious credit for what iTunes and the iPod accomplished for the music industry—a unified, simple, and reasonably-priced interface for buying and playing music either on computers or on the go. Now Apple is trying to replicate that model with iBooks on the iPad, a free application that lets users buy and read books from major publishers, building upon Amazon’s previous work with the Kindle family of digital book readers. But unlike Apple’s approach to music, which started with a computer-based downloading and playback solution that extended to numerous portable devices, iBooks enters the world at a disadvantage: for the time being, it works only on the iPad, and the books Apple sells aren’t readable on Read More

Alice for the iPad Shows Why E-Books Are Cool
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Apr 2010 09:29:45 UTC +00:00
by Yeah, we all love paper books. But you have to admit that e-books can, indeed, do stuff that paper books cannot. A good example of this is Alice for the iPad, Lewis Carroll’s story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland turned into a children’s storybook but with an interactive twist. This particular e-book is not meant to be read sitting still; it’s meant to be shaken and stirred, forcing many interactive elements on the screen to move around, fall down or jump up. And I bet the kids will love it. Alice for the iPad is $9 in the App Store (there’s also a free, lite version), but if you want a taste right now, check out the video below. Read More

Beautiful!
SummerH 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is absolutely lovely! A great way to keep my kindergartener interested in learning to read:)
Beautiful but Buggy - and condensed
Wirebug 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Gorgeously designed with a layout that compliments the original drawings, many of which have been animated. Much of the text, alas, has been excluded and the application crashes ... often. (I hope updates will not only address the instability, but add more of the story, with more animations.) Even with these problems - and the steepish price tag - the app is so pretty and cleverly illustrated that I gave it 4 out of 5. Alice fans and those who have to amuse kids and fussy adults will be glad to have it on hand.
Beautiful
macfam.me 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Wow. Gorgeous app. This is a whole new level for reading books. Of course children eat this up. But you'll be surprised how interested adults are :) Job well done!
Very Creative!
pshortyx 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is what the iPad is all about. The story is brought to life in a whole new way. You've got to try it!
Abridged
dddaaannn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
A great idea and some beautiful execution. I'm disappointed that the text is abridged, and will probably not share this with the kids until we've read the original. I hope future updates will include better navigation (arrows are slow, cat-index doesn't work very well for me?) and maybe smoother animations and more variety. And a couple of typos, but that should be easy to fix. Would be nice to be able to hide the arrows and just tap the sides, so they don't obscure the pretty pictures. Will be worth $9 with these updates!
Amazing
anderonoliveira 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Amazing. This is the future for books. Love it.
Ground-breaking creation
FATweety 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" is a beautiful creation. It is providing an original use of iPad technical possibilities which will inspire other marvelous works and will help to define a whole new world of literary presentation. I'm delighted to see this new world unfolding right before my eyes. I have one small aesthetic quibble which in no way subtracts from my enthusiasm. I would wish to have the navigation elements (arrows and index icon) less obtrusive. (Everybody's a critic, eh?)
I wish I could return for a refund
Renato 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I impulsively bought this app after watching the demo video online and I'm sorry to say, the experience is deeply disappointing. Every single person I handed the iPad to tried to interact with the animations by touching them, it's an touch screen after all, and seemed surprised that they couldn't. One can't "flip" pages intuitively, instead having to rely on a clunky-looking arrow navigation. Same goes for the accelerometer-controlled animations, my kids want to touch, move things with their fingers, interact... not just watch them floating across the page. Very sad. Oh yeah... there's no sound either. The illustrations are GORGEOUS but the sporadic big typography inserts are overdone and inconsistent (with tacky drop shadows and emboss). Just not elegant at all. I eagerly paid for it but I expected a lot more, while my kids, even thou they love books, were bored.
Reinvent reading? No, but ...
eLStarz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
... this is still a wonderful app! If you can calm down from the crazy video and mega-hype that this has had over the last week you'll find something that's artfully delivering illustrations and a story that are as vibrant today as they were 100 years ago. Using physics to make the entire device interactive was a stroke of brilliance by the creators and has made this the FIRST of what will surely be many many books for the iPad that showcase not only a great text and drawings but also why the iPad is better for books than the (now incredibly) dowdy looking Kindle! I wish you could throw the cakes around with your finger or the sweets at the dodo, that seems like an oversight by the developer, maybe they'll fix this in future versions. Until then, i'll keep showing my family and friends this app as an amazing example of what's to come!
Beautiful yet (still) Condensed; update is much more stable
Wirebug 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Gorgeously designed with a layout that compliments the original drawings, many of which have been animated. Much of the text, alas, has been excluded. The update did fix the crashiness and added some new animations in the already animated pages, but no new animated pages, and still no Lobster Quadrille or "You Grow Old, Father William." Even with these problems - and the steepish price tag - the app is so pretty and cleverly illustrated that I gave it 4 out of 5. Alice fans and those who have to amuse kids and fussy adults will be glad to have it on hand.
Dissapointing
uuh...clem 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
With an abbreviated story and not particularly immmersive interaction this seems much more like 1.99 than 7.99.
Great app, but needs to be cheaper.
Ozark21 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Very beautiful and well done app, but for 9 dollars, I was expecting the whole story or at least a higher level of interactivity. Definitely, needs to be cheaper, perhaps 3.99 - 4.99.
Beautiful!
Darth Tenchi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Hope there are more like it in store
Nice and yet...
Jemiaule 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Gorgeous but this is basically an ebook with a few moving things. Think of it as this generations "pop up book". From the overhyped reviews here I was expecting something more tham what I got. Not to discount the beauty of the ebook itself, but at the price I was expecting more and was a bit disappointed.
Alice for the ipad
teachtomev 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
buyer beware! it's ok, but not nearly as exctingas the video makes it appear to be. no sound effects and limited text. certainly not worth the money in this version.
Missing some things
Johnrf2 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Though the book is pretty fabulous, and shoud not stop me from sharing with my granddaughter, I wish for a few more things. This rendering cries out for sounds! Also, i realize the authors are trying to save money, but now with the mostly good reviews they should be able to update to an unabridged edition. Especially by jumping on the 3 D movie bandwagon.
Almost there
Waters of the Nile 4.0 stars Version: 3.01
There's a lot to like here. It uses the Tenniel illustrations. The interactive features are in the spirit of the book. It looks great. The full text is now available (the original was horribly abridged, with all of the poems deleted) and an editing error in 3.0 has been corrected. The main thing, maybe the only thing, now is to fix the "index", which, in the unabridged version, is simply a list of pages that, if you have great patience, you can scroll through. Even a table of contents would be a huge improvement over this. Five stars when this issue is resolved.
Perfection
Kevin Reen 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
Amazing! With this new update everything I could possibly want from a story book app has now been given to me. The option to switch between abridged and unabridged gives every member of the family their perfect level of interaction from youngest to eldest. I can't wait for more titles like this.
No read to me!
Kthoede1023 3.0 stars Version: 3.01
Everything about this is beautiful. However it doesn't have a read to me option. For the price I thought it should. My 5 year old wants this and she want it to read to her, and so do I in the car!
Great app
And all together now 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
I always loved the story of Alice in Wonderland, I am sure if Lewis Carroll was alive today he would have written his book as an app. for is is a real magic, his name should be on the cover page,
Well worth every penny
rrrtist 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
I forgot what I paid for this book, but if I ever want to impress kids and adults alike, this is what I show them. The illustrations are gorgeous, the interactive pages are engaging and the story true to Louis Carrol.
App with potential
AZ Grandparent 3.0 stars Version: 3.01
Very good story App but very weak interactivity and the fact that their is not a play option with highlighting of the words is a bad oversight especially for this price.
Its decent
LoveInAnElevator 3.0 stars Version: 3.01
I really do like this app, but there aren't nearly enough interactive/moving pages to make it worth $8.99.
Not a lot of added value
patrickac 3.0 stars Version: 3.01
If all you want from an iPad version of Alice is lovely layout complete with Tenniel originals and $8.95 doesn't seem out of line to you then this is your Alice. If, however, you were expecting some clever animation, then you are going to be disappointed. Alice is a one-trick pony, and it isn't all that good a trick.
Is there a sequel?
Jade monkey 4.0 stars Version: 3.01
I love it so much, is there a interactive version of Alice through the looking glass? Just add a better index for unabridged and were all set!
A delight.
Hands not in place 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
I very much enjoyed the original illustrations! The added bonus of the animations was a plus.
