Shop til you drop (calls): How iPhone users shop in stores
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Feb 2012 21:00:25 UTC +00:00
Earlier this week Nielsen released a study that found just about a third of smartphone users turn to their device for shopping-related activities. The study, conducted during the third quarter of 2011, gives a good picture of how we’re using smartphones in stores. One thing the study highlights is that while not everyone is using their phone in this way, many more would like to. Below I’ve combined Nielsen’s results with a primer on how you can get in on the trend of being a savvy shopper with your iPhone specifically using apps that are available in Apple’s Apple Store. Nielsen found that 38 percent of survey respondents use their smartphone for comparison shopping while in a physical store. This is encouraged by online retailers, and last holiday season Amazon gave a 5 percent discount on certain products to users who scanned retail items using the Amazon app. Big box stores like Target are Read More

2011 Best App Ever winners announced
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Jan 2012 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Jeff Scott of 148 Apps has announced the winners for the Best App Ever for 2011, and you can review at the official site right now. Jetpack Joyride from Halfbrick was the overall winner in the iOS devision (which is a great app, but probably also benefited from actually promoting the Best App Ever vote inside the app itself). There are several other winners across various categories like Most Innovative (Codea), Most Useful (Amazon Mobile) and Best Time Killer (Tiny Wings). Scott tells us that 148 Apps received a record 1.5 million votes this year, which is three times the total of last year's choices. Before voting began, there were 287,643 nominations across 7,243 apps. This year also featured Android winners in many categories, but Scott says that iOS topped the Android votes by a factor of 10:1. The Best App Ever awards are always an excellent check of what's available Read More

With two iPad apps, a tablet-optimized site, and the KindleFire tablet, Amazon is positioning its tablet experience around pure media consumption. Tablet owners are already shopping more on Amazon than other sites around the web, according to the Moxery Tablet Commerce Guide. Will that those numbers increase once the Kindle Fire tablet gets into the hands of U.S. Internet users later this week? In September 2011, nearly half of tablet owners made purchased on their devices. Currently, 12% of Internet users in the U.S. own a tablet. To push media consumption even further, on November 10 Amazon boosted its KindleFire sales to 5 million. Will Amazon come out as the top retailer in the tablet commerce space? Let us know what you think in the comments. Read More

By Leanna Lofte, Saturday, Sep 17, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I love Amazon. I visit the site multiple times a day, whether to order things for my home or the office, or just to browse and do some product research. Hands on with Amazon Student for iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Aug 2011 19:23:36 UTC +00:00
If you are or have ever been a college student, then you probably know that textbooks are the biggest racket going, and can represent a huge chunk of your budget each semester. That’s why Amazon’s latest iPhone app is so smart; Amazon Student offers to alleviate some of the strain on students’ wallets when it comes to textbooks, so that the money can be better spent elsewhere, like making deposits for kegs or buying a new Mac for school. Even though the app lets you quickly and easily scan barcodes to hunt for better deals on Amazon than might be available from your school bookstore, really, there’s little here that’s necessarily student-specific, besides graphics. In fact, if you’ve used the Amazon Mobile app for iOS, then you’ll probably feel a slight sense of déja vu. As mentioned, both let you can scan barcodes using your device’s camera, as well as search the Amazon.com Read More
There are many people right now who received an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas this year. Many of them may or may not yet know their way around iOS, the operating system that those iDevices run on. Most essential, to begin with, are the Apps. Want to donate to a non-profit? There's no app for that. You'll have to go to a website and fill out the information there. This has led to some wailing and gnashing of teeth from non-profits who know that if they could reduce the "friction," more people would donate. It's the same reason that Amazon has an iPhone and iPad app plus another app especially designed just for the iPad, rather than requiring you to use their website: the easier it is for you to spend your money, the more are to do so. So far the only app that was able to do this, for a time, was PayPal, but Apple eventually required that they remove that feature according to a recent New York Times article. Some have speculated that Apple may want to take their usual 30 percent cut, but realize that would be a bad PR move. That Read More
Amazon Releases New App, Price Check for iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 23 Nov 2010 14:00:31 UTC +00:00
“Price Check” is Amazon’s latest attempt at getting in your pocket. This shopping app lets you compare prices of products on Amazon.com. Amazon already has their popular Amazon Mobile app in the App Store, but they apparently thought that a more focused shopping app would be a welcomed addition to their mobile offerings. Price Check allows you to instantly check the price of something with a variety of search options… You can scan barcodes like RedLaser, snap a picture like Google Goggles, or speak your search query like Dragon Search. Price Check works well with your Amazon account for managing your cart, making purchases, and seeing your Amazon search history for quick reference. I think that Amazon released this app at the start of this particular week for a reason. Price Check is the perfect app for any shopper that’s planning on navigating the storm that is Black Friday. Updated Amazon Mobile app now includes barcode scanning
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Oct 2010 02:11:48 UTC +00:00
Even when they catch you inside of an actual store instead of their homepage, Amazon has a way to discourage your non-Amazon purchases with their updated iPhone application, which now features barcode scanning. Much like the other barcode scanners available in the App Store, the Amazon Mobile app turns your iPhone’s camera into a barcode scanner.  Simply open up the app, tap on search and then scan barcode, and then hover your iPhone over your desired item so that the barcode is centered between the markers on the screen. Amazon then, as per usual, takes care of the rest by showing you the price of that same item in their virtual store.  Users can then proceed to purchase the item right from the app just like they would after a regular search. Amazon Mobile is available as a free download.  In order to utilize this new feature, you’ll need to run Read More
Posted 10/13/2010 at 4:56am | by J.R. Bookwalter Amazon released a pair of updates Tuesday to their popular universal iOS apps -- the Kindle app now lets you view pages two-up in landscape on the iPad, while the Amazon Mobile app makes price matching even easier by incorporating barcode scanning. Amazon.com has been busy refreshing their iOS apps this week, and the results are now ready for all to download. First up is a 2.3.1 update to the Kindle e-book reader app, which now offers the ability to change the column display while in landscape mode. “Choose between one and two column view in landscape on the iPad,” Amazon’s update notes reveal. “To change the column display, tap the screen to activate reading controls and tap the ‘Aa’ button to open View Options.” iOS users who frequently shop Amazon.com will also be happy to hear the company has refreshed their Amazon Read More

Amazon's iPhone app gets barcode scanning update
Calendar16 Wed, 13 Oct 2010 01:30:00 UTC +00:00
Earlier today, Keith reported that Delicious Library developer Wil Shipley had barcode scanning on his radar as a future iteration for the late, lamented iPhone version of the popular catalog app. Lo and behold, within a few hours the newest update to the Amazon Mobile app hit the store -- featuring, you guessed it, barcode scanning. With the new 1.2.8 version of the free app, and an iPhone 4 or 3GS running iOS 4.x, you can quickly scan a product barcode to search Amazon's catalog for matching items. The scanning screen offers a handy bracketing guide to show you where to position your product, and once you get the hang of it the scanning is very quick. I tested the barcode scan on three products I had lying about -- a Griffin Motif case for the iPhone 4, a Flip Mino box, and a James Patterson novel -- and the app Read More

This Week’s App Store Updates – 14th May 2010
Calendar16 Fri, 14 May 2010 09:44:54 UTC +00:00
Browsing the App Store this weekend?  Here are ten new or updated apps for the iPhone and iPad worth taking a closer look at if you are: A 3D action shooter from Gameloft, where an infection is turning the inhabitants of a town into zombies and it’s your job to blow them to pieces!  There are 12 levels, two characters, plenty of weapons and great graphics.  $6.99/£3.99. Another in the seemingly never-ending range of TapTap games, this time dedicated to Grunge rockers Nirvana.  There are 13 songs featured in the game, plus Bluetooth battles and the usual adjustable difficulty level.  $4.99/£2.99. A movie quiz game which promises around 5000 questions and hours of gameplay, if you’re good that is!  In addition to the expected single player mode, there are two further modes, turn based and head to head, plus a global high score table.  $0.99/£0.59. Amazon shopping app for iPad launches
Calendar16 Wed, 12 May 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
If your actual iPad purchase hasn't drained your debit card down to the red-alert level, Amazon has your back: the web retail giant has announced that the Amazon Mobile app is now fully updated for iPad, and it's available now on the App Store. The free app gives you all your favorite functions: browse the store, add to your Wish Lists, track packages and orders, watch movie trailers and listen to song samples -- even One-Click purchasing is included, otherwise known as "The Danger Room of Online Shopping." Point of aggravation, though: searching for music in the app only displays CDs, which seems somewhat backward. The mobile site for iPhone lets you search digital downloads, although you can't buy them (you have to add them to your wish list for later purchase); browsing in Safari on iPad is both better and worse, as it lets you get all the way to Read More

Mobile Web Meets Internet of Things: Barcode Scanning
Calendar16 Tue, 12 Jan 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Two of the biggest trends we tracked last year were Mobile Web and Internet of Things. In a new series on ReadWriteWeb, which we're calling Mobile Web Meets Internet of Things, we'll explore how these two important trends are converging and look at some cutting edge example products. We start with barcode scanning... Internet of Things is when everyday objects become connected to the Internet, via technologies such as RFID tags, sensors and barcodes. One trend we saw expanding in 2008-09 was mobile phones being deployed as readers for barcodes. Increasingly, smartphones such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices offer applications that allow you to scan a barcode on a product or object and get more information about it. Barcodes are similar to RFID tags, in that they both hold data. RFID tags are generally more functional and flexible than barcodes. Also RFID tags can be read/write, whereas barcodes cannot. Very good start!
sclyde 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
So far so good - this app is very easy to use and has a lot of the features I was hoping for such as the product searching, account details and such. The 'Remembers' section is all too cool! I took a picture of the mouse on my desk and within an hour or so I got an email from Amazon with a link to the product on their site - very cool! This will be especially handy when I'm in the store and want to compare prices or remember something for later knowing it's probably cheaper on Amazon.
Amazon Remembers feature is right on...
pismokitty 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I just downloaded this app before heading out to lunch and then tested the Amazon Remembers feature in a dimly lit restaurant bar by taking a picture of my shoe on my foot half obscured by my pants. Didn't take long for Amazon to send me an email notifying me that they found the product I was looking for. Clicked the link within the email on my iPhone and it launched Amazon Mobile, showed me the exact shoe I was looking for along with the price. All I had to do was pick the size and color and click buy.
Good Start - Needs Work
oldrsk8r 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This has potential but seems beta to me. I shop mostly music and was surprised to see song listings aren't available with the albums. Would also be fun to listen to the song snippets like on the full browser version. But it's free and that makes it hard to argue with.
Not that great
Blehka 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Browsing for items is difficult. You really have to know what you're looking for if you really want to find something. As someone who likes to browse for new blurays, I found it difficult to use.
WANT TO ACCESS AMAZON Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | Japan | France | China~
BONGBONGSAN 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
IT WILL BE GREAT IF AMAZON INTERNATIONAL CAN BE ACCESSED TOO!
Who's giving this good reviews?
Freelndre 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazon must be paying people to give it good reviews because this app is pointless. A fraction of the funtionality of using Safari. It's claerly another targetted marketting medium without giving consumers anything new.
No track listings for CDs
emills01 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works well and is fast, but it would be nice to have track listings for CDs
I love it!!!
Tubesocks! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Saved me money today when I was at Toys R Us! So easy to use. Links perfectly with their online site and my acct....Thank you Amazon
Pathetically underfeatured
Josh A. Miller 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Can't browse. Can't view gold box deals. Can't do established iPhone interactions like pinch-zooming an image. The home page doesn't even scroll. Seems like this app was hastily rushed so as to not miss the holidays. The app seems slick but very soon I found it's limited utility made me switch back to safari.
Not so great,
remy63 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
What's the point of this app? The web app is better in my view, coz it has the features I really want to be able to access anytime. This app could be great if it could offer the deal of the day, lightening deals and quick picks. Also the ability the browse catagories is essential.
Ok, but...
NorthbySE 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's all fine and good for viewing and editing your own wish list, but viewing others is still missing. Also, what's the point of trying to view a larger picture if you can't zoom in by pinching? This app has potential but needs work.
Sneaky Apple Employees Block MP3
Buggo30 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Notwithstanding the mention of digital download support in the app description, mp3 functionality is blocked. I guess Apple also thinks itunes is a less favorable place to download music.
FINALLY!
vo0doodude 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works exactly as you'd expect it too. Can't tell you how many times I've been out shopping and have had to navigate to the actual website to cross-reference the price on something. This app works lightning fast and maintains all the settings you've already set up with Amazon. Awesome!
Beyond Impressive
Ozcr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app rivals Pandora and Facebook as the most impressive, full featured iPhone App from a large, powerful website. The app is useful, fun to use, and really, really well made.
Ok
Paul's IPodTouch 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This would be perfect if you could download mp3s.
Great
Camfromomaha 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Suggestion: Have search results sorted by rating.
Uh oh
ericthewhat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great. I can definitely see my drunk-texting problem becoming a drunk-shopping problem. Great app, will definitely cost me more over the long term than the free download.
Nice!
aeicher 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazon turns a seemingly dull app into one of the most consumerly useful apps I have with the addition of the remember experiment. Very nice.
Easy to use. Easy to buy.
E - Engineer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is how mobile shopping should be. Enough said.
Nice, but missing key features
SingingFriar 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
There are two very crucial features missing from this app that the iPhone optimized website have:
Disappointing
td628 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app is a bit disappointing. I can't sort my Wish List, which is hundreds of books long. Therefore, I have to scroll through them to find anything. It's easier just to keep a bookmark to my Wish List on the regular PC page and use Safari to view it.
Nice work
Cleverdevon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
To the girl whose phone was stolen... Change your security settings for your phone and add a passcode. Log out of your amazon account with a computer. Don't bag on the app because you're not resourceful.
Security Problem - phone stolen, Amazon has credit card info!
bigappleiphonegirl 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I do most of household shopping on Amazon from my desktop. I was thrilled to add the Amazon app to my iPhone. But Amazon stores your credit card information. If someone swipes your phone, they can add a new shipping address, buy thousands of dollars worth of merchandise on your credit card, and click send faster than you can cancel your card. Amazon needs to add a default password check prior to checkout for the mobile version. Amazon could allow less security conscious users to elect to disable this feature if desired.
Not so much
Adambomb_23 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's great that you can find Amazon products easily, but I would really like a way to get the daily deals. Possibly an audible tone or vibration for each one that matches your interest (jewelry, electronics, home&garden, etc.).
Awesome

A few minor visual glitches but other than that it's a fantastic execution. It's much further ahead than the iPhone formatted web site. Next release just call it Amazon though. I don't need to see ".com" on my homescreen!
Great interface! It's what user needs!
Win66 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Before it was not easy to log in member page by iPhone website, and the description was too short to verify what we need. Now it is easy to operate by full functions as same as website. Perfect and good for members!
Missing one important item...

I like this new program but why not include a link to the gold box special? Amazon, please add this to the next version.
Oh yeah

Another great Amazon product.. Very simple and efficient design with an easy to navigate interface, that still offers full Amazon functionality. Thanks Amazon!!
A must have app

You can do everything with this application from a consumer aspect; sellers won't find much use for this app. View your wish list, add to it, view recommendations (my favorite feature by far) and, of course, make secure purchases from your iPhone/iPod Touch. Love it!
Nice useful app, needs at least one more feature

I like this app quite a lot and was very happy to find it. It's great to be able to view your "wish list" from the app. However, I wish I could also view my "shopping list". I use this feature on the website quite a bit and having it available on the app would be great!
No iPhone Kindle purchase support?
fnordpig 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
For some inexplicable reason you can't purchase iPhone Kindle books through this App, although there is no reasonable technical reason why this would be. It is, after all, just another shopping cart purchase. Instead you have to use the mobile website version to purchase - which is fine, but makes you wonder - why bother with this app?
Missing a lot

No Deal of the Day. No lightning deals. No easy way to browse products or categories. (Unless you know exactly what to search for, or it's not already in your wish list from the main website). I will say though, that if you do know what to search and are ok without looking at other vendors other than what they first display, it not a bad start. All in all, this seems like it was rushed out half-baked for the holidays. I'll stick to the website for now.
Almost Great

When browsing textbooks, it is very frustrating to find out what edition you're looking at. On most of the books I've viewed, the cover image is blurry, so I couldn't even get it that way - or even read the author at times. The search is a little literal in that if toy put in the title missing a ":" even with the exact words it will have the book you're looking for buried in the list. Finally, maybe it isn't offered for the books I've looked for, but where is the "look inside the cover" preview? Other than those things I think it is a pretty slick app.
Seriously??

Sometimes people just don't know how to use an app. A previous reviewer for this update version mentioned that they couldn't change wish lists. Hit the wish list button at the bottom, then click the "change wish list" button on the left side of screen and voila! You've changed your wish list. Know what you're talking about before posting!Great app for searching, would be 5 stars if I could make Kindle e-book purchases with it. Hopefully that will happen eventually.
It just ok

It's convenient & works great, but I get better deals logging on a pc directly to the site. This app doesn't pull up everything in a search. I prefer saving as much as I can.
Good but could be better
Hello it's me again 4.0 stars Version: 1.8.1
Can't use the buy with points option you can on the regular website. Can't move items from cart to save for later, you can only delete the item. Otherwise a good app. I use it all the time for my purchases.
Great BUT

Love this app👍It NEEDS a feature for SELLER accounts. I have a seller account and it'd be amazing to be able to scan and sell your stuff.
Love it!

Keep up the great work. Would love sorting and more search results, though.

Stop being stupid this was an awesome app and I've never had any problems with it.
Annoying differences
Dakota04 3.0 stars Version: 1.8.1
The iPad and the iPhone versions are different and it's annoying to the point of frustrating. The iPhone version is 10x better.
My Favorite App
