Even Pepsi isn’t immune to PR goofups, such as the tasteless and pointless “Amp Up before you score” app they recently released, which struck a sour note for some users. That prompted a rather insincere apology from Pepsi, published on Twitter: — Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it’s in bad taste & appreciate your feedback. — In other words: yeah, yeah, if you don’t like it, don’t download it, more or less. The app itself: pickup lines that are supposed to work on various types of women. Yep, that’s the whole purpose of the app, and it ignores the rather obvious tip of “don’t glance at your iPhone constantly while trying to pick up women”. It isn’t that we’re so sensitive, its just curious that a large company like Pepsi would green light a silly, borderline sexist and absurd Read More

Michael (Admin) | Oct 15, 2009 User rating: ( votes, average: out of 5)  Loading ... This is the app that, over the past week, has been written about over and over and over again… and now Pepsi is apologizing for it. Apologizing is definitely the right move from a PR standpoint, but I’m just gonna come out and say what everyone else is apparently afraid to… AMP UP BEFORE YOUR SCORE IS FUNNY! Sorry ladies, I know it probably pisses off some of you, but for the rest who can see this app for the joke that it’s clearly intended to be, it’s pretty hilarious. AMP UP Before Your Score is a very tongue-in-cheek guide to “scoring” with 24 different types of women who range from Aspiring Actress to Indie Girl to Trouble and everything in between. For each type there are numerous ways of engaging the lady that include Read More

5 apps for the scoundrel
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Oct 2009 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
Earlier today we were inspired by Pepsi's AMP UP Before You Score app [iTunes link], which prompts the would-be ladies' man through several pickup routines, each suited to a different type of young lady (sorority girl, tree hugger, goth girl... that one probably requires a bit of sulking). It's a bit of fun if not a little classless (and Pepsi & AMP have since apologized). With that in mind, we've compiled 5 apps for the scoundrel. Fake Call apps This one is more of a trick than a particular app. Here, Manolith describes how to use one of the many fake call apps to your advantage. Before approaching the object of your affection, set up a fake "grandma" profile complete with picture and set to ring one minute into your conversation. Because starting off with deception is the way to go. The fake call apps let you set up a fake Read More
PepsiCo's Amp Energy brand stirred up a lot of hatred in the last couple of months when the "AMP UP Before You Score" app [iTunes Link] was released. This app, branded as sexist and inappropriate by a lot of people who rated it in the App Store, provides guys with cards to "identify her type," pickup lines that are useful with a particular "type" of woman, and ways of keeping track and spreading the news via social networking if you "get lucky." A public apology was made by Amp on its Twitter feed (@ampwhatsnext) which introduced the app and its questionable content to a larger audience. Even worse is that the apology included a new Twitter hashtag, #pepsifail, and was retweeted on several other Pepsi feeds. That had the effect of not only causing more people to become aware of the app, but also increased the furor towards it and towards Read More
By – Guess Geico isn't the only company affected by a "caveman mentality." Pepsi came under fire yesterday for releasing an iPhone app that encourages users to share the names of their sexual partners with their friends online.  The free AMP UP Before You Score app — released to promote Pepsi's AMP Energy drink — includes chat-up lines for 24 different kinds of women, including college girls and foreign-exchange students. Twitter lit up with howls of protest, accompanied by a #pepsifail hashtag, so it seemed appropriate for the soft-drink giant to offer a mea culpa via AMP's own Twitter feed: "Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it‚Äôs in bad taste & appreciate your feedback. #pepsifail." However, Pepsi has yet to actually pull the offending app, which at press time was still available as a free download from the App Store. Related Read More
Pepsi tweets apology for 'bad taste' iPhone app

Amp Up Before You Score iPhone app. PepsiCo has tweeted an apology on its Amp Energy Twitter account, as well as its Pepsi account, to those who may be offended by its new iPhone application, Amp Up Before You Score, which some have complained is insensitive to women. "Our app tried 2 (sic) show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women," a tweet read on Amp Energy's Twitter page. "We apologize if it's in bad taste & appreciate your feedback." The message was retweeted on Pepsi's official Twitter page. The soft-drink maker stopped short of removing the free application from Apple's App Store. Amp Up Before You Score is described by Pepsi as a "road map to success for your favorite kinds of women--24 in all." According to the company, the app first helps men "identify her type." To do so, the app shows a listing of "types of Read More

Pepsi launches sleazy "Before You Score" iPhone app
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Oct 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
Pepsi just put out a new iPhone app to promote its energy drink brand, AMP, but it already seems to be backfiring. The app is called "AMP Up Before you Score," and it gives guys tips and lines for picking up different types of girls. As girl-oriented blog Jezebel astutely points out, the "types" are part of the problem. It's 2009, and we're still breaking women down into 24 different clichés? Give me a break, Pepsi. For an extra-sleazy touch, you can use Before You Score to post about your successful "scores" to Facebook and Twitter. I can try to see the other side of this - it's so over the top that you can't take it seriously, and it has to be a fun joke, right? - but it's not really fun or funny. Way to use technology to move society backward, major soft-drink manufacturer! You don't have to take Read More

Reviews

Lamest app *ever*
citydog 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's pathetic how the initial flurry of five star reviews are obviously from Pepsi's PR people.
Offensive and the wrong way to do a branded app
Raven Zachary 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Dear Pepsico, your iPhone app, AMP UP Before You Score, is offensive and is a great new case study for branded apps gone wrong.
Superior
Deadpanwalking 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
My girlfriend just left me ... Because this app is so cool! I'm typing this from the bottom of a pile of Dallas cowboy cheerleaders, I can't breath, and I don't even care! And why should I? Believer, this app will change your life in ways that will lead to you traveling with extra underwear. Trust me, I've been there!
Sad.
Dakota Reese 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of those cases where it is unfortunate that I have to download an app, just to express how sad I think it's premise is. The ECD responsible for it said that it is just "a little edgy." "A little misogynistic" is more like it.
Great mix of humorous utility
Bemused 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
While it may seem like a sophmoric bit of humor, this app has a solid footing of useful information. Dating a foreign girl? Read up on greencard lottery. Overall just a clever way to serve up some worthwhile tidbits.
Totally original app
everending 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
All I can say is that this is super funny, technically amazing and gorgeous!!
Funny
jabman1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ha! Cool idea, and well-done. Not sure how far these lines will really get you, but they're very funny, and they'll at least get the conversation started. The live info might actually be useful, too.
Awesome!
Immagonna 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is crazy awesome! The lines are hilarious and the info is real time. Can't wait to try it out!

Apollo C Vermouth 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Awesome app. The pick up lines etc are really fricking funny. Even if you don't use it to pick up chicks it's pretty good just to have a laugh at. Wish i'd thought of it.
Too funny
STTNSVNTY 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

A Lame Attempt.
shmeilia 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sexist and stupid. I've been hearing people say things like "I'll never buy Pepsi products again!" I won't go that far, but really, Pepsi? This is a lame advertising attempt, and one that I feel will do more harm than good.
Downloaded just to rate this POS
Charles Gillis 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you seek sex advice from the idiots at Pepsi you are likely to get an STD or a criminal conviction. Who in he'll at Pepsi thought this was a good idea? Grow up douche bags. Deleting app now.

This app is funny and harmless. The only ones rating it down are chubby chicks and girly men. Come on people, lighten up and get a life!

This app is definitely worth a good laugh; if you are offended in any way you are completely missing the point.

TypedEagle 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great new app.. The pickup lines are hilarious, and some of the advice may actually work, but the best part of it all? The "collect them all" description. Its a challenge I will willingly accept.
Funny
Wallabot 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pretty good! Nice hilarious addition to the day! And for those complaining, STOP! It's all in good fun, there is nothing sexest or demeaning going on, so why get so worked up and upset?
Fun and funny
DP10192 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Funny little idea. Clearly just in good fun. Kept me entertained.
Hillarious!
kfred84 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is absolutely hillarious -- not because it is crude, vulgar or insensitive, but because it offers a brutally honest look into the most common female personalities. Unlike many of the free apps available on the App Store, this app provides real value to its target audience: single guys. Granted, if you are a jerk, then this app will proabaly make you come across as an even bigger jerk; but if you are a decent guy, this app is loaded with relevant info. pertinent to the entire range of female personalities you will encounter socially. If all this app does is give a guy a little chuckle and a quick glimpse into the mindset of the woman he is about to talk to, before he talks to her, then it has delivered on its value and utility in fostering a fun experience for both the guy using the app as well as the woman he is entertaining.
Not Amazing But Def Entertaining (& I'm a girl)
luvstef 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
If your panties are in a bunch over this app you seriously dont have a sense of humor. It's pure entertainment.. if I were Pepsi I'd make one for the girls to use for guys. And honestly, there are way more offensive apps out there. #getoverit
I don't see what's wrong.
karmaapple 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a woman - as if that changes things - and was eager to see what the fuss was about. Based on what I'd read on Twitter, I expected a ridiculously insulting application. I was disappointed: it made me laugh! This is a cute, purposely ironic app. It would be fun to read one that helped ladies prepare for the different men they'll encounter.
Good job!
Gqpenn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks to the complainers! I'd have never heard of this app without you! With your PR campaign you are working to make this the #1 app on iTunes!
