By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. Within walking distance of Cisco (really!), Intel, eBay, and only a few miles always from the Mother Ship. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). And @lazyastronomer for general space and astronomy geek stuff. Why @lazyastronomer? When people ask me why I wanted to write Read More
A few noteworthy games have just received a price reduction that are worth checking out. One is a puzzle game that features some incredible photorealistic graphics, one relies on simple stick figures and silhouettes, and the other provides hours of dungeon crawling action. They all have separate iPhone and iPad versions available for a low price, so no matter which device you own this particular sale should interest you. Ancient Frog - A puzzle game where you must lead a frog to it's meal, which is naturally a fly, by moving one leg at a time. There are droplets of water laid out before you that are the only spots to place his feet. Keeping in mind that the frog's legs can only stretch so far, you must position him close enough to the fly to be able to eat it, using the least amount of moves as possible. The graphics Read More

When Ancient Frog was first introduced for the iPhone over one year ago, it was hailed as one of the best looking and most unique puzzle games around.  The gameplay is simple, just touch and drag each one of the frog’s legs in order to move it towards the fly in as few moves as possible.  It sounds easy, but the environments and solid mechanics just suck you in. Now with the iPad’s release right around the corner, developer James Brown of Ancient Workshop is working on a graphically optimized version of this unique puzzle game that will make you want to tap and drag those frog legs all over again on your iPad. When Brown first set out to make Ancient Frog iPad compatible, he had to take a lot of things into consideration.  The game looks fantastic on the iPhone’s 320×480 screen, but when each pixel would be expanded Read More

'Ancient Frog' on iPad – Developer Thoughts
Calendar16 Sun, 31 Jan 2010 08:04:39 UTC +00:00
For the many that surely missed it, on Wednesday Apple quietly announced a new member of the iPhone OS family, the iPad. And, while it runs existing iPhone applications just fine in a pixel-for-pixel or 2x-scaled mode, the device with its 9.7-inch screen has much more to offer in the way of screen real estate (over 5x the pixel count of the iPhone) and both CPU and GPU power. The iPad proposition gives iPhone developers much to ponder in the way of just how best to support it. James Brown, author of the lovely, zen-like frog manipulation game Anicent Frog [App Store] has, himself, begun to ponder the situation and has shared his thoughts on what he feels makes the most sense in bringing Ancient Frog to the iPad, in a recent blog post. I can make the current iPhone application recognise the iPad and behave more like a native application Read More

Ancient Frog
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Apr 2009 09:14:13 UTC +00:00
Ancient Frog is a puzzle game that focuses heavily on aesthetics. The player assumes the role our hero Mr Frog who's whole goal in life is to slowly maneuver his way closer to his next meal, an unsuspecting fly. By moving along different water spots on the lily pad, the frog can eventually align himself with the fly and grab it with his tongue. Each level progressively gets harder and harder, forcing the player to use their well-developed brain to figure out how to get this stretchy frog to his prey. As a normal puzzle game, this would have gotten old very quickly. But with the abolutely beautful atmosphere created by the quiet hum of crickets and the occasional creek of the frog, this game immerses the player in an experience worth seeing and being a part of. The frog itself moves realistically as the player moves it's amphibious limbs towards Read More

Avent-garde game design
Slickninja 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Here's what happens when you design a game ground up for an iPhone. The best way to describe Ancient Frog is frog rock climbing. Each level is a puzzle (getting to a zone so the frog can feast on a fly) the gives you a goal to complete with the least amount of moves possible. The frogs, as flexible and nimble are they can only stretch in certain ways and can only stick there pads on desinated areas. With the biological mechanics, the frogs legs can move greater distance meaning often creatively reposition the frog to make it across gaps. It's a fun laid back game that'll get the mental cogs turning accompanied with absolutely gorgeous graphics. It looks better while playing as frog figits and glides across the screen. The levels vary as difficult puzzles are often followed by easier ones, suggesting that pacing and accomplishment were primary concerns of the developer, James Brown. If you want make your friends even more "green" with envy, get this game. It may lack on replay value but you'll get your money's worth with 100 levels. I look forward to what else Mr Brown has planned...
beautiful, brilliant, and boring

Please don't shun me for my title. Let me explain my alliteration. I love puzzle games, especially casual ones like this. PuzzleQuest is one of my favorite games of all time, so how could I be so upset with this game? The puzzle depends on the elasticity of the frog and it makes me want to rip his legs off when it seems like he should be able to stretch and bend just a little further than he should. It's basically one big trial and error game, but because it's such an abstract way of display a puzzle, I found myself making the same mistake over and over which just frustrated me. When I finally beat a puzzle I would move onto the next with little to no satisfaction, only a small bit of relief. Some people will find this game gratifying and enjoyable, but I didn't.
Overrated
Kraznoff 3.0 stars Version: 1.01
I bought this game because of all the great reviews but found it lacking for the price. The premise is to move a frog, one foot at a time, into proper position to eat a fly. While this is interesting and gets harder as you progress it fails to really entice you for more than a few minutes. The reviews boast the beauty and mechanics of the frog, which are impressive, but this should not be the main selling point at this price. This would be a great game at $2.99 tops. Why complain about the extra $2? Because you can easily find 2 other games at 99 cents with much more replay value. I'll gladly revise my review with a price drop and encourage looking up youtube videos before buying any game.
Beautiful Game
Anduril_ukr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is one of the most polished, graphically beatiful games in the app store. After a few session playing this wonderful game, it has become one of my favorite games for the iphone/ipod touch. It evens ranks pretty high on my favorite video games ever. The game doesn't have extravagent menus, overwhelming options, or online scores like many other games. No, this game prizes its simplicity yet beauty. The menu is simply a field of flowers. Select a flower, and you can go to the puzzle. Here you are presented with one of the many species of frogs in one of the many environments, such as a leaf or bark. You then must navigate this amazingly rendered frog across many droplets, or stepping places, so that each of his legs are situated on the correct, foot-print like droplets so that he can eat his lunch, a fly. There isn't really music, but the nature sounds really add to the relaxing feel of the game. The puzzles gently challenge, never overwhelming, but never overly easy. Really hard puzzles are usually followed by easier ones, providing a very good balance. This game is calming, fun, and simply beautiful.
Fantastic and original puzzle game!
Tom_20371 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow, this game has everything! Beautiful graphics and animations, nice sound, great controls, and original gameplay. Maneuvering the frog around is a kind of geometric puzzle based on the limitations of how the frog's limbs can move and stretch. It is a little bit like some "climbing puzzle" games. It's a relaxing and meditative game, but challenging. The price is a bit more than I'd expect to pay for an average puzzle game, but this game is completely worth the money.
Soothing, challenging and brilliant!
TSP777 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The description for this app really doesn´t do it justice. Basically you move the frog from point a to point b in as few moves as possible. Graphics are top notch, movements of the frog seems realistic and the sounds are ambient and soothing. The first app that combines the stillness of Koi Pond with a goaloriented puzzlegame. Get this if you are interested in the upcoming Zen Bound that is in the same genre.
One of a Kind
Rasta71 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
A relaxing puzzle, true enjoyment, one of those must haves.
Not as good as everyoe makes it sound
OneArmBearKilla 3.0 stars Version: 1.01
I feel I was very misinformed by the reviews of this game. Though it is as said, a puzzle game requiring you to move your frog from one side of the map to the next, all to get your lunch (a fly). But this is a tedious and very repetitive task that has no music or to back it up. It also does not utilize the Ipod as well as everyone says (the graphics are decent at best). A decent idea, but not all that appealing. There is nothing about this game that is must have, Zen Bound is the way to go for a puzzle game.
Gorgeous

Stunning from the moment it starts up. Best visuals that I have seen so far - realistic animations, glorious light/shadow effects, immediately stunning. This game looks amazing and it is very enjoyable to play. The sound effects are perfect and the puzzles are varied and challenging. If you like puzzle games, you will love this game!
Too much money
CioCio87 4.0 stars Version: 1.01
It's indeed a fun game but given the lack of variety in the gameplay, I say $4.99 is just too expensive. IMO, this app should cost $2.99 at the most.
stunning

It's okay. Clever idea but gets boring a little too quickly. Some movement is unrealistic and needs to be updated. Definitely not worth $5.
Incredible and relaxing.
