Lightning Launcher

| FREE | PierroX
Show of hands — who likes experimenting with new homescreen applications on their Android device? Just as I suspected, there’s a ton of you. Lightning Launcher, from , is one that I’d like to bring to your attention. This minimalistic app is possibly the speediest launcher on the Market. While, it may be intended for older devices which don’t have a ton of extra RAM to spare, Lightning Launcher is a nice addition to any Android phone, especially if you’re looking for a straight-forward experience with none of the extra razzle-dazzle that other launcher apps offer. You won’t find any impressive 3D transition effects here — the goal here is to offer a quick and easy way to navigate through your applications, and Lightning Launcher does just that. By eliminating all those extra special effects, you’ll be conserving more memory while saving battery life. The .apk is also relatively small, weighing in at only 146k. This means you’ll also be saving storage space on your device, so you’ll have more room for the things you really want to download. Even with the removal of all the extra unwanted effects, there’s still room for a bit of customization with Lightning Launcher. The application settings allow you to configure the look and feel of your homescreen. You can roll with icons and application names, just icons, or just application names. You can also choose wallpapers and custom fonts, so while this app may be “minimalistic”, there are still a few options for those who can’t help but tinker. If you’re tired of hearing me talk about it, and you’re ready to give Lightning Launcher a go, hit the link below to proceed to the Android Market. Root Explorer (File Manager)

| $3.99 | Speed Software
All though this was posted under the Vibrant section, most devices are similar. Although some tweaks might render your device unusable, so make a backup before you start messing with things. To get started you will need to of course have root access to your device. None of this is do-able on a stock device. You will need to have an app such as Root Explorer installed on your device that allows you to get to the system folder of your device. Once you have it installed open it up and navigate to your system folder. Once inside there is a small button at the top, tap it to change it and make sure it says ‘Mount R/W’. Now long press on the build.prop file and select ‘Open in Text Editor’. Now you are inside the build.prop file that controls a ton of your devices stuff. Master&Slave goes through a huge list of things you can change or add into that file. Many of the things will already be in that file and you may only need to change a value, others you will need to add an entire line of craziness to take advantage of it. He goes over data speed increases, power saving tweaks, UI tweaks, media tweaks and many many more. For instance - Boot Tweaksdebug.sf.nobootanimation=1Gives your phone no boot animation [B]persist.sys.shutdown.mode=hibernateMakes phone boot rapidly fast. To give your phone an HD effect fitting a little more on the screen, look for this in you current build.prop and change the 240 to:ro.sf.lcd_density=X (225 or 230) Like I mentioned, not all of the values or tweaks will be present for every device. The thread is fairly large and you are doing all of the adjustments at your own risk. Not our fault if you edit something and break your Read More

Hanging With Friends

| FREE | Zynga
Are you still playing Zynga’s ? I sure am, and I was glad to see it got some attention today in the form of an update. The latest version is 4.5.0, and it brings with it a couple of new additions and enhancements. The first thing you’ll notice is the addition of the “Coin Store” — I haven’t had a chance to toy with it yet, but I’m assuming this will be a place to go to spend your in-game moolah on assorted pixellated goodies. Also, players can now set up custom avatars and balloons, making their profiles a bit more personalized. From here out, it’s pretty much performance enhancements. Smoother animations, improved performance and stability, better support for varying screen sizes and a smaller .APK file round out the changelog. Since Hanging with Friends launched back in September, the game has already surpassed 1 million download and continues to be a fan favorite which sits high on the list of most popular Android Games. Facebook and Twitter integration have definitely helped out Zynga’s cause, as well. If you’ve never tried it out, it’s definitely worth a download, especially considering it’s free. If you’re looking for a challenge, feel free to send me a game invite via . I’ll be sure to show you how the game is played. Happy updating! Text Notify

| FREE | Dustin Riley
This app was developed by Dustin Riley with one simple goal in mind, pop up you messages while in full screen mode. For instance, while playing a game or browsing the web. Giving you a quick look at what the message is without leaving the game to go check. Making it one of the smallest apps I have seen, coming in at only 18k, it is a must have for almost anyone. The feature list doesn’t just stop at SMS messages though. He has included a feature for emails as well. Although K9 mail is required for use, it is a nice addition. It is simple to turn on and off and works in landscape and portrait mode. The app was recently completely re-written and updated on November 25th, so expect a nice improvement if you have tested this out before. Feel free to click or scan the QR code found below to give it a whirl. Application: Text Notify Developer: Dustin Riley Cost: FREE Read More

SD Increase

| FREE | Diego Stamigni
The first thing you can do is turn of all the window animations. Granted, this does take away some of the prettiness on your device, it will help speed things up a bit. You can locate those under Settings>Display>Animations and switch it to ‘No Animations.’ On 2.3 devices you can also turn off the ‘Screen Animations.’ The next thing you can do is remove any and all live wallpapers. Of course we absolutely love to have our live wallpapers running, but they can not only suck the life out of your battery but also slow down your device. Another thing that many people absolutely love that can hinder your Android experience is the use of widgets. Although widgets are all well and good, overloading your screens with widgets can also play a factor in your speeds and battery life. Clear as many widgets off your screens that you don’t absolutely need. If the widget has polling option change them to manual or spread out the time that it polls for the information that it provides. For instance, if you use Beautiful Widgets you can set it up to refresh every time you wake your device. How many times a day do you wake your phone up?? Probably a couple 100 times or more. Setting this to every 4 hours and manually updating the weather when you need it will save battery and processing power. Now having a rooted device you have more available options at your finger tips. Some ROM, such as CM7, include various settings in the ROM to adjust certain aspects of your device to perform to your standards. With so many ROMs to choose from though, we will go over a couple generalized apps that everyone should be able to use. Although most all flash-a-holics know about overclocking, Read More

Adobe AIR

| FREE | Adobe Systems
I’m sure some of you, as I was, are confused about what exactly Adobe Air is and what it does. I installed it and then it wasn’t in my launcher… so initially I was a bit confused. I have to admit I haven’t kept up on flash development and the announcement from Adobe that they were going to stop developing Flash for Android took me by surprise. But now that I’ve done some digging I think this is going to be a positive and not a negative. For one we will be able to have apps that are cross-platform and have the same interface (or at least very similar) from one device to another. For instance Conqu. Conqu is a task manager (your personal and project tasks, not Android’s). It requires Adobe Air to run on your pc and on your Android device. I don’t want to fully review this app, but it will be very handy for me keeping track of house-hold chores, car maintenance, the infamous Honey-Do list and other tasks that I tend to forget about easily. Another app that I tried out is a game called Aqualux. It’s just a simple puzzle game, but the graphics are very high quality and it ran extremely well with absolutely no lag what-so-ever. Tweetdeck is another desktop app that I hope gets written to Air for Android. I know there is already an apk for Tweetdeck, but it’s nowhere near as useful as the desktop app. So why Air? Using Air, developers are able to make a desktop app, a tablet app, and a phone app all without lengthy development on each device. Once the app is written into air it’s easily transferred to each platform. This includes apps for both PC, Mac, Android, and iOS devices. If I was a developer I would be extremely excited about Read More
