'Angry Birds Space' Review - The Final Frontier
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Mar 2012 22:01:57 UTC +00:00
Let's wind the clocks back to 2009, as really, to appreciate what Angry Birds has become, I think we need to go back and appreciate what Angry Birds was. The App Store was a crazy place. The "gold rush" was still in full effect. Publishers like Chillingo were trying to stake as large of a claim as possible in this brave new world brought about by the impulse-powered instant gratification of downloading a 99¢ game and the exploding popularity of the iPhone. Chillingo was incredibly successful in pooling together a library of games we called "AAA titles" at the time. iDracula [ $2.99 ] may look incredibly archaic by today's standards, but back then, it was among the cream of the crop. In late May, Chillingo spun off a new brand called Clickgamer.com, which per the original press release was intended to "carry casual games and software applications in the Apple Read More
Games like Monkey Quest: Thunderbow [$0.99/HD] disrupt the feel-good media narrative we like to tell about the App Store. It's a low-risk way to capitalize on experimental games like [$4.99], a place where Andreas Illiger, the one-man dev team behind Tiny Wings [$0.99], can sell thousands of copies. It's also where a giant corporation like Nickelodeon can sell us an Angry Birds [$0.99] clone to advertise its kid-friendly MMO, . It would be easier to find Thunderbow distasteful if it weren't so radical, born out of the same  mid-90s fever dream that brought us anthropomorphic turtles who were also ninjas. The hero of the game is a nameless monkey who carries a bow-and-arrow. After you beat the 30 available levels -- more are, supposedly, coming soon -- you can play a few bonus rounds with a girl-monkey who shoots lightning bolts out of her electric guitar-bow. It's incredible. My favorite thing about Read More
The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More
Mobilewalla: The Highest Rated Mobile Apps Of 2011
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Dec 2011 15:16:42 UTC +00:00
Mobile analytics firm Mobilewalla has ranked the top apps across all four mobile platforms for 2011, using its own ranking system known at the “Mobilewalla Score.” Instead of looking at raw user ratings, this scoring system is an algorithm that analyzes a variety of factors in addition to ratings, including an app’s position within its own category, volume, social media sentiment and more. The scores are a numerical value between 0 and 100, with a higher score indicating a more successful app. It’s an interesting way to slice the data, and gives a different picture of the app store ecosystem than typical year-end lists do. Those often look solely at download numbers and tend to include apps which have been popular for years – like Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, etc. Other lists, meanwhile, are editorially selected or curated, like some of those we’ve featured here. Apple Picks Instagram As The “iPhone App Of The Year”
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Dec 2011 18:14:04 UTC +00:00
Apple released its iTunes Rewind 2011 and App Store Rewind 2011 today, the company’s annual lists detailing of the top selling apps, music, TV shows, movies and podcasts for the year. This year, the biggest winner on the apps front was Angry Birds, which ran away with the number one spot on the iPhone and iPad in all categories except top free iPhone app, which was awarded to Facebook. Apple also selects its own favorite applications, and one of our preferred apps, Instagram, won the honor of being Apple’s “iPhone App of the Year.” Angry Birds, which is available on iOS as both a paid and free application, not only dominated the year-end lists as the number one download in several cases, it also occupied additional slots on multiple lists for its spinoffs, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio. Several other games also appeared on the year-end listings, including Fruit Ninja, Read More

Angry Birds Rio updated with 15 new levels
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Jun 2011 16:25:28 UTC +00:00
Good news Angry Birds fans, as a new update for Angry Birds Rio is now available for the iPhone and it includes a new bird type and 15 new levels. If you’re not familiar with Angry Birds Rio, it’s Rovio collaborating with a major movie to build a game out of its juggernaut franchise. The funny thing is that the game could very well go on to generate more revenue than the movie itself, which seemed to have flown through theaters. Rovio is not just a one-hit wonder, as the company made more than 40 mobile games before it struck it big with Angry Birds Rio. It has now smartly continued to port this game to other platforms including the browser and we’re sure to see more merchandising and TV shows in the near future. The update is available now in the iTunes store and you can download it here. Marin Read More

And as expected, the update will be free for those who have already made the purchase. Otherwise, Angry Birds Rio for iOS is priced at $0.99 for the iPhone/iPod touch version and $2.99 for the “HD” iPad version. Read More

First Update to 'Angry Birds Rio' is a Day at the Beach
Calendar16 Mon, 09 May 2011 09:15:01 UTC +00:00
Back in March Rovio Mobile released Angry Birds Rio, a version of their incredibly popular bird-themed physics game Angry Birds that tied into the also bird-themed movie Rio. Normally movie tie-in games aren’t very good, but we were pleasantly surprised with Angry Birds Rio in our review, even awarding the game 5 stars. More than just a Rio re-skin of the original game, it actually contained a few new elements and improvements that made it almost feel like a full-fledged sequel. In following with Rovio’s practice of adding plenty of new levels to the original Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons, they have released a trailer for the first update that is set to hit for Angry Birds Rio, subtitled “Beach Volleyball": Rovio has stated on their Facebook page that this new update is set to hit sometime this week. If you’ve been enjoying Angry Birds Rio as much as we Read More
Future game developers, it might be a good idea to make sure the main character in your upcoming game has feathers. Currently in the US App Store, 4 of the 5 overall top paid apps are games featuring some type of bird. The newest of these titles, and the game that has recently toppled Angry Birds Rio [99¢/Lite] at the #1 spot, is Gamevil’s Air Penguin [99¢]. It’s not hard to see why either, as Air Penguin contains all the elements that can make for a successful game. It has adorable graphics, dead simple gameplay, and an engaging scoring system that ensures you’ll keep coming back for more. Global warming has caused the glaciers to break apart into pieces in Antarctica where Air Penguin lives. Your job is to direct him across the scattered pieces of ice in an effort to reunite him with his separated family members. This portly penguin will Read More
This Week at 148Apps: March 27 – April 4
Calendar16 Sun, 03 Apr 2011 16:26:26 UTC +00:00
This week, March 27 - April 4, Rovio Mobile announced 10 million downloads of its latest hit: Angry Birds Rio. Also, 148Apps sheds some light on its April Fool's Joke (don't worry - we're not changing direction!) The biggest news this week comes in the form of a statistic: 10 million. That’s the number of downloads Angry Birds Rio received only 10 days after its inception in App Stores across the world. “Likely the majority of these are free installs from the new Amazon Android App Store” writes 148Apps Founder Jeff Scott, “but that’s still an impressive feat.” The day before Rovio Mobile made the announcement, 148Apps own Derek Walter awarded the application 4 stars, noting “If you are eager to take on new challenges with your favorite birds, then dropping $0.99 on Angry Birds Rio is a no-brainer.” Read the full review here. $0.99 Released: 2011-03-22 :: Category: Games $2.99 Read More

April 01, 2011   Douglas   Angry Birds, App Store, Games   Our family loves Angry Birds so we were excited to see a new version called Angry Birds Rio. Apparently we’re not the only one who likes the new version because it’s currently the #1 selling app in the App Store as I write this article. Instead of crashing birds into pigs who’ve stole your eggs, now you’re trying to crash into cages of birds to help release them. There’s also different levels with monkeys in trees and a big bad guy bird you have to knock out of the sky. There is a catch to this game. All the levels have not been released yet. Only section 1 and 2 are ready and the rest will be released throughout the year. Read More

Rovio Mobile has released their latest mobile crack offering—the latest edition of Angry Birds. Well, technically speaking they released the new version a few days back, but it seems I must have been living in a total non-game bubble and missed the news entirely. That said, I like to think I was not alone in that respect. So that being said, the latest from Rovio Mobile is Angry Birds Rio and it is available for Android as well as the iPhone and iPod touch and even the HD version for the iPad. Those sporting an Android device are the luckiest as the game is still available for free. Otherwise, the iPhone and iPod touch version is $0.99 and the iPad version is $2.99. The official description of the game reads as follows; “In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio de Read More

Posted 03/23/2011 at 1:40pm | by Nic Vargus Angry Birds is the most overrated game of all time. I mean it. It’s true that I’ve always been something of an anti-Angry Birds evangelist, but my reasons are solid: it just isn’t that good. If I heard as much critical acclaim for an equivalent Xbox game, I would punch myself in the face, throw away my controller, and join up with Jack Thompson for tea. In fact, the only pleasure I derive from those feathered freaks is blowing them up. And I do enjoy blowing the birds up. See what many people fail to realize is that there was a time, a time before movie tie-ins and gratuitous spin-offs (St. Patrick’s Day Angry Birds, seriously?) in which Angry Birds was but a twinkle in Rovio Mobile’s eye. Back then Doodle Jump, Peggle, and Pocket God ran the show. They stayed on top Read More
Angry Birds Rio out now on iPhone, iPad, Mac
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Mar 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
The movie tie-in game for Angry Birds, called Angry Birds Rio, is now available on the iOS App Store for 99 cents on iPhone and $2.99 on the iPad; it's $4.99 on the Mac App Store. The game features 60 new levels of the popular bird-throwing game and stars two characters from the upcoming movie Rio. It features full Game Center integration with all new achievements and boasts "a spectacular boss fight" of some kind. In short, if you like Angry Birds, you'll enjoy this one as well. The game unfortunately does contain those ads that had some feathers ruffled in the original version, but the ratings on iTunes haven't suffered very much. And the description on the iOS store does promise updates "throughout 2011," so there's more content to come. In case you don't want to spend the buck just yet, there are also free versions for both platforms that Read More

Angry Birds Rio Arrives on the App Store Today

[iOS-Game] Angry Birds Rio (HD)
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Mar 2011 14:54:33 UTC +00:00
-> App Store-Link (iPhone / iPad) Read More

PERFECT! The last levels of Angry Birds Rio are finally updated. In addition, the Orange Birds have also been updated. Sweet! The Green Boomerang Birds have also been updated in more levels than the last update. They now appear in 7 levels of "Smugglers' Plane", including the final boss fight. Well done!Hint: The final boss fight is, once again, against Nigel. It's all the Angry Birds and Mighty Eagle (excluding the Orange Bird, Blu, & Jewel) versus Nigel. Nigel has more health than the last time you encountered Nigel in the "Jungle Escape" boss fight ("Jungle Escape" Level 4-15) and has his stage set up differently than in "Jungle Escape". The way Nigel flies around the stage in this boss fight has also changed. It doesn't matter though, because you can be able show Nigel no mercy and defeat him and the Smugglers once and for all! If you can beat Nigel once and for all, you receive a big surprise: the EPIC HAPPY ENDING! Good luck!I heard you will still be making more updates for Angry Birds Rio & they'll be based on deleted scenes and extras from the movie. Good luck in making them!
