'The Last Express' Is Coming To iPad And iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 18:46:53 UTC +00:00
Jordan Mechner and Smoking Car Productions' adventure game, The Last Express, has been slated for an iPad and iPhone release. Mechner just announced the port over on his blog, and carefully avoiding the kind of details we want to know, like, say, what new features it will support. He did, however, reveal that the folks over at DotEmu are behind the port. DotEmu recently handled the iOS version of Another World [$4.99], and did a masterful job. The Last Express Facebook page appears to be the place to look for new drips of information at this point in the marketing cycle. It's sporting a few nifty pieces of art, as well as some production-phase images, all of which may or may not be from the original version of the game. We're investigating. We'll definitely be keeping our eyes on this, so stay aboard. We're like a train. With seats that you, the Read More

'Another World' And 'Scribblenauts' Are On Sale
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 17:00:31 UTC +00:00
A couple of high-profile games are on sale on the App Store this morning. Warner Bros, in celebration of over a million sales and Valentine's Day, has put Scribblenauts Remix [$.99] on the price-slash block. Down to $.99 from $1.99, the latest version of the game includes a new Valentine's Day playground. The other notable, Another World [$1.99], is now just $1.99 instead of its usual $4.99. We've created the above epic image to mark the occasion of the meeting of these two games within a single blog post. Enjoy! In all seriousness, both games are imaginative and lovingly rendered on iPhone and iPad. You can read more about Scribblenauts here and Another World here if you'd like, but let us save you a bit of time with this double-fisted spoiler: both games are, like, fantastically buy-it-now good. The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More

A Fascinating Look Under the Hood of 'Another World'
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Dec 2011 23:21:40 UTC +00:00
Here at year's end, we recently posted our Best iOS Games: 2011 Buyer's Guide to give the millions of new iOS users that were created yesterday a place to get started. Among the 5-star best on the list is the (universal) iOS port of Eric Chahi's superb 1991 cinematic platform adventure Another World [App Store] (a.k.a. Out of this World). In our early review of the iOS version posted back in September, we called Another World an absolute App Store must have. Given our fondness for this title, it's with no little interest that we recently discovered and digested Fabien Sanglard's fascinating blog post "'Another World' Code Review." Within, Sanglard details the results of two weeks spent reading and reverse engineering the source code to Another World. He starts his post off with a brief introduction. I was amazed to discover an elegant system based on a virtual machine interpreting bytecode Read More
Daily iPhone App: Another World
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Sep 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Yep, it's out -- Another World has finally made it to iOS, in a special anniversary edition celebrating the game's 1991 debut. The game features completely remade graphics, sounds and effects, and you can switch between the original graphics and updated HD display at any time. There are now three difficulty modes to play with, and there are even Game Center achievements added in to the mix. Nearly all the ratings on the app are positive so far, and while I was never really a big fan of the original game (I definitely think it's a great achievement, though the style of gameplay never appealed to me), I can appreciate the fact that we now have it playable on iOS. The app is available in a universal version for US$4.99 right now. Read More

Awesome

I remember playing this game as a kid. I'm so happy it's been ported to idevices.I only hope the Gabriel Night trilogy is next to be ported. :)
The only game ever.
Michael Settoon 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I can't possible explain how excited I am to see this game get another release. Having played the PC release of the HD version already, I can tell this game is a MUST have for long time fans and those looking for a great adventure title. Another World was LIGHTYEARS ahead of it's time, and still holds up to this day. Anyone who's enjoyed the recent Sword & Sworcery EP, and hasn't already come across Another World, should definitely give this game a shot.
Great game.

Great game from the past but the controls are like running in mud.
Either your kind of game or not

A timeless classic
Fabio Bracht 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is more than a game. It's a piece of history. It was one of the first games, if not the first, to have cutscenes. In 1991! But much more important than that, it was a game that took risks in order to tell a compelling story solely through the actions, gestures and facial expressions of the main characters. It was a cinematic experience, a game that's as current today, in times of minimalistic games such as Braid, Limbo, and iPad's Contre Jour, as it has always been. Game design superstars such as Metal Gear's Hideo Kojima, Shadow of The Colossus' Fumito Ueda and No More Heroes' Goichi Suda cite Another World as one of their main influences. Please, please, download this if you love video games.
I'm in awe :)
Darth Wolf 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I'm so glad to see this game in the app store. It brings me back to my SNES days. Awesome classic game and better yet, it controls good on the iPhone.
Awesome
iammane 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Just killed normal mode in 20 minutes, can't wait to try the harder modes. My ONLY gripe is that I really do miss the moody music from the SNES version, you know, the awesome, dark timpani roll music. But if it wasn't in the original I can't fault the devs. Awesome port the touch controls worked perfect
Holy cow
Daniel A DiBiasio 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I can't believe this is on my I phone right now. I had this a million years ago on super nintendo, almost beat it, and lost the game. I too have always had it stuck in my mind as one of the funnest, most challenging games I had played at the time
Requires a game center account
therealpjpark 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Rats. The app won't run if you don't have a game center account. This needs to be disclosed in the description.
Great experience
Mathieu Lajugie 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
It's still as entertaining 20 years later. Controls are better than I expected, but can still be frustrating at times.
Solid port, brought back lots of memories
Michael Black 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Man, I remember playing this game on Super Nintendo SO much. I flew through this version and never realized how short the game was until now! I highly recommend this if you've never played it. It's a very cleverly designed game and worth figuring out. If you want to play it for it's nostalgia factor, that's pushing the $5 value a bit, because it goes by so quick, but I have to give credit to the people that worked on it for porting the game so well.
Words cannot begin to describe...
"The Thinker" 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This game is truly the lynchpin in a turning point for the video game industry. Is was, as stated above, the first game to feature cutscenes. You'll be hard pressed to find a game today that doesn't directly influence from Another World (Out of this World). While the graphics may be rudimentary by today's standards, the story is absolutely rich, and ground breaking for it's time (1991). For anyone who's looking to get their hands on a piece of video game history…. you've found THE pivotal title. I invite you to let your imaginations run wild while you immerse yourself in this deeply engrossing title.
A classic.
jcampbell1 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
A very nice port of the game. Unlike others, I have no issues with the controls. The only issue seems to be with the way the game remembers shooting the chandelier and the green ball. It seems to forget that that has already been done. I played this game for 100s of hours when I was younger. It payed off, as I was able to beat this version in less than an hour. There really should be an achievement for beating the game without dying.
Great update, BUT...
Lew C Lew 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great update to a classic game, BUT why oh why is there both a left and right attack button when pressing one doesn't automatically make you attack in that direction. If I press left attack, I should attack left even if I was facing right. It should turn automatically. As it is, I keep dying when surrounded because I have to manually turn and THEN press attack. Please change this or make it an option in the menu.
Wish I could play it.

I was a huge fan ... it brings back good memories; the bug for not getting the "The End - Finish the game" achievement after finishing the game was fixed today, October 3rd, 2011.
Sweet nostalgia
theredaaron 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Amazing platform/adventure/puzzler, particularly from a historical context. What the controls do varies slightly but significantly with each new challenge, and you feel like you're in control of an immersive story rather than a repetitive game. Never since have I seen such intuitive and diverse control of a character.Tactile input would be better, but I played through with the gesture controls and found them more than adequate for this not-quite-a-finger-twitcher of a game. It's a work of art.
Memories
Philip Tejero Jr 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great port of a classic! I remember playing this on my snes, having to rely on gamers instincts, not faqs to finish it!
Good game hampered by awful controls
PeacefulJay 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
I played a little of this when my friend had it on his PC in '91. It was groundbreaking and a lot of fun (even though I never got really far into it).I was so amazed to see it on here that I bought it as a reflex, immediately. Most I've spent on any app so far, actually, so congratulations.I have a major complaint about the controls, though. Far too vague and unreliable. Right now I'm stuck not far in; I can (with effort) get past the flooding cave, but it's ridiculous that it ends up being the controls' unpredictability that determines whether I'll make it each time. And by the way, having to go through the flood again every time because I can't get past the guards on the other side of the waterfall is a huge annoyance. Why isn't progress saved after the flood?!
Wish I could play it.

Love the game , the sounds, remember it's in your touch screen iPhone..It's not gonna be like the original..Not all games are the original feel. But I'm glad they made this for the iPhone. We need more games like this. I'll hold my breath for " HEART OF A ALIEN "!!!!!!
Only thing missing..
FlysEyes2 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
..is the original music. It was too iconic, too much an integral part of the feel of the game to replace. Please add it as an option. PeacefulJay, you're doing things in the wrong order if your progress isn't being saved. I finished the game and I had zero problems with the controls. I just miss that ominous baseline! Please port the sequel, Heart of the Alien next!

Like many others this games brings back great memories of great games from back in the day,(showing my age). This is one of the games that helped revolutionize the gaming industry. Good job bringing this back to life. the controls only take a little time getting used to, if your a complainer, remember one thing, your the one who bought the I phone.
Controls invalidate experience
Jonathan Scheff 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
The controls are completely frustrating on the iPad. This game is/was ok, but doesn't translate to the iPad. I find games boring when the only challenge comes with struggling to use the controls and not from the difficulty of the game itself.
