Sometimes I come across a game that makes me feel really dumb really challenges the ol' noggin of mine, and I know I just have to share it with you all, the Android faithful (because Android users are inherently smart). A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about my first experiences with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I noted that while its hardware is excellent, there’s a distinct shortage of tablet apps for Android. Most apps will work just fine, but they’ll make poor use of a tablet’s screen real estate. But things are definitely improving. New apps are coming out daily. I’ve tried quite a few of them, and I thought I’d do a quick rundown of the apps I’m actually using on a daily basis. Feedly turns RSS feeds into a stunning digital magazine. I feel a little bit of an attachment to Apparatus - we were one of the first blogs to review the game, which was a nice discovery while browsing Reddit one day. I've seen the app grow and add a whole boatload of interesting features; it truly is one of the Android platform's best games. So when we got word today that it was finally leaving beta and stepping into the world of "finished" products, I couldn't help but smile a little bit. The Apparatus Android App by Bithack is a puzzle game where the object of the game is to set up simple mechanical structures to move one or several marbles to the goal. The game starts off with a few different elements that you can use to build your mechanical structures and then adds more elements and even forms of energy as you advance in the levels. One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that spared me a couple hundred bucks I otherwise would have spent on a sat-nav system. The navigation shows a virtual view of the road as I drive, warning me of upcoming intersections and telling me which exit I need to take off the roundabout. I use it for walking, too. Since it was first launched, the Amazon Appstore has received a fair amount of criticism. Now there’s more: one indie developer is pulling his high-ranking Android app from the store after calling it a “disaster” and claiming that indie developers shouldn’t even bother with trying to sell through Amazon. The developer is Bithack, an indie mobile game maker from Sweden and the maker of Apparatus, a puzzle game in which players create machines to move marbles around the screen and accomplish certain goals. Apparatus made its way up to the No. 3 paid app in Amazon’s store, but its CEO, Emil Romanus, recently wrote a detailed blog post about what Bithack feels is wrong with the store.
