02.06.12        App Score: 8/10    is a seek-and-find game that features a rich, progressive story line with hidden object tasks, puzzles and mini-games spanning a total of 24 chapters. The premise of the story leads players to assume the role of a real estate appraiser checking out an ancient castle up for auction. With McGyver-like skills, you will weld broken water pipes, hunt down a ghost dog and pick locks all by employing random objects found in each scene. Players also interact with one rude-as-heck undead butler that can’t even be bothered to show you to your room when you arrive. Can you complete the story or will you go batty like your predecessor? As players progress through the Vampireville story, classic mini-games like memory matching and solitaire creep up in addition to the primary seek-and-find objectives. The addition of mini-games breaks up redundancy and keeps the game interesting, but the progressive story line does a nice job of keeping things moving and tying things together. The animation and script are both semi-intelligent and well-performed, giving various amounts of quality to the overall game. The actual gameplay is also of quality design, even though the interface is a catch twenty-two of sorts. Vampireville features many different scenes, all of which are completely interactive. Unlike a lot of hidden objects games that ding you for random tapping, Vampireville actually necessitates the action. Many of the objects in each scene are interactive, requiring players to tap, touch and drag objects that move and reveal additional objects. At times it can be frustrating, especially when the scene requires zoom to find objects, but the complete view to place them. However, the available hints, which are indicated by “sparkling” objects, are generously available and regenerate fairly quickly. Fortunately, as a casual game Read More

PiggyWoogy TM

| $1.99 | Jdea Co., Ltd.
02.03.12        App Score: 8/10    Once upon a time there were two pigs who built their castle out of jewels…Well, maybe that’s not the exact version of the classic tale, but this game isn’t the exact version of the classic game it appears to be. is a version of the classic match-three puzzler and while it has a very Bejeweled feel to it, PiggyWoogy is a clever recreation of classic gameplay. PiggyWoogy’s storyline is simple – save piggy and his sweetheart swine from the invading woogys (wolves) by making matches within the castle’s jeweled wall. Just like you would expect from similar game boards, different colored jewels are rearranged to connect three or more. As the matches disappear, new jewels fall into place. The difference in PiggyWoogy is the wolves that are scaling the jeweled wall. The right combinations will dislodge the wolves, causing them to fall. Rather than playing against a clock, players are pitted against the wolves. The levels are cleared by dislodging each level’s preset number of wolves. The block-matching, wolf-climbing PiggyWoogy frenzy can get pretty “hairy” at times, but there are special blocks and powerups to help you out of tight spots. A reset, oil and ice block all become available at random times based on the number of matches made. Combos are rewarded with special blocks that result in special actions, like bombing groups of jewels or zapping entire rows. If a keen eye and a quick finger aren’t enough to stop the wolves, they will scale the wall and take a bite out of piggy’s health meter. If the health meter disappears before the set number of wolves are defeated, the level fails. As players progress through levels, new wolves with different abilities are introduced to up the challenge. PiggyWoogy doesn’t feature any Read More

Crystal War Blood Field

| $1.99 | Digitalfrog
02.02.12        App Score: 8/10    is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that is the sequel to Crystal War, which became quite popular among mobile gamers. The one thing missing was the ability to game against other fans. Now, by popular demand, multi-player in real-time is available. Even better, the iOS game still delivers on all facets, making it a sure hit among new and veteran fans. As with the original, gameplay is smooth, engaging and built around a fairly elaborate storyline, which starts with the Goblins unifying after 100 years. The new leader, a four-armed monstrosity abandoned at birth, “Black Chuck Houser” has used his unsurmountable will to survive, overwhelming power, and unrivaled cunning to fuel his unprecedented rise to the top of the Goblin ranks. You are the only person that stands in his way.  As with the RTS genre, Crystal War Blood Field tasks you with mining crystals, building defenses and demolishing your opponents. From the start, the player has to be very aggressive in attacking the opponents as they’re very difficult to overtake and as the levels progress so do their defenses. This becomes quite the predicament and can only be overtaken by the game’s built-in RPG theme that allows you to level up as you gain experience. It makes for a nice RTS and RPG hybrid, but also makes it essential to better equip your character with increased skills. The human army features an assortment of characters, including the miners as well as the soliders. In all, there are 16 unique units. On the other side, the Goblins have a group of 13 units, including trolls and the terrifying Balrog. Each unit offers its own set of characteristics and abilities. This wide selection of options is what makes Crystal War Blood Field a truly interesting game that Read More

Where's My Water?

| $0.99 | Disney
02.01.12        App Score: 10/10    Disney Mobile’s has received some well-deserved accolades as a top-rated game and indeed, since it’s release in September the water-physics puzzle game has been a top seller in the App Store. For fans of the Swampy and Cranky battle for bathwater, the recent update that included “Cranky’s Story” is a welcome addition to an already stellar game. Where’s My Water? features seven different sewer worlds with 20 levels each and the recent introduction of Cranky’s Story provides an additional 5 with the option to purchase additional chapters. The premise of Where’s My Water? is to solve each level by creating water flow to Swampy’s bathtub. Swampy is a hygiene-oriented alligator who really loves to take baths, but his nemesis Cranky is trying to block the water. To help Swampy stay clean, players solve various puzzles by digging out dirt and removing obstacles that prevent water flow. Levels become progressively more challenging as new obstacles and elements are introduced. With each level Swampy waits patiently in his bathtub, with scrub brush in hand, while you make quick use of problem-solving skills. There are opportunities for time bonus score boosts, overflow bonuses, and of course achieving “tri-duck”. Each level has three rubber ducks that can only be collected if they come into contact with enough water. There are also secret hidden items that can be found in some levels, which once collected will unlock bonus levels. In addition to bonuses, other elements, such as algae, toxic waste and moving plumbing obstacles come into play. Since some of the Where’s My Water? levels are more challenging than others, a terrific blend of casual entertainment and challenging puzzle play is achieved. Some may question the physics, but whether or not the actual water-flow physics are realistic is Read More
