AP Mobile for iPhone still a dog for many (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

The AP Mobile app from the Associated Press was much admired when the iPhone first came out. It was quick and reliable, and at the time, it was one of the few dedicated news apps. Now, after a few revisions and updates which didn't go so well, AP Mobile is still a popular download, but for many, that's where the popularity ends. The newest version, released in June, supports 'push' updates, so even if you are not in the app you get an alert with breaking news updates. It seems to work well, although sometimes I would quibble with the editorial choices. It can be turned off, but it would be better if it could be customized -- only domestic news, or only sports bulletins, etc. By comparison, the Twitter-based Breaking News On newswire now also offers a BNO iPhone app that supports push notifications and some advanced filtering capability; it's

NPR’s iPhone App Blows Other News Apps Out of the Water (Mashable)

by NPR finally has an iPhone app, and it is awesome. NPR News [iTunes link], which just became available for download, offers the same core features of other news apps like AP Mobile [iTunes link], primarily that you can browse the day’s big stories and read news articles in multiple categories. However, no other news app is linked to 1000+ NPR radio stations, news programs, and live streams, meaning you can listen to your news anywhere, anytime. The App adds a strong audio layer to the news reading experience. While it’s simple enough to read the day’s top stories, you can also listen to most of the day’s top stories as well. A speaker icon next to most articles allows you to listen in on stories, and the playlist feature lets you queue up the stories you want to listen to if you’re busy, on-the-go, or just need to keep occupied.

CNN Mobile: Feature-rich, Interactive, and Not Free (ModMyi.com)

Other news outlets like The New York Times, France24, the Associated Press, and NPR have had free apps out for some time. CNN is taking something of a risk in making its offering a non-free download, but obviously hopes its feature set makes it attractive enough. The free (with ads) content includes both video on demand and live breaking news reports, with push notifications when live newscasts are available. The text-based news is fairly standard, with a photo and headline/subhead for each story. Rotate the phone to landscape orientation, though, and you get a CoverFlow-style photo flow that you can navigate to find the story you're interested in. CNN Mobile makes some interesting steps in the direction of social media, with the capability to forward news stories to Facebook, Twitter and SMS. And the ability to upload photos or video (3GS only) directly to CNN's iReport site from the iPhone holds

Desert Island Apps – Number 6, with Dan Cohen (iSource)

Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music. What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island. I ‘m very happy to say that for today ‘s post we ‘ve got Dan Cohen as our ‘guest ‘. Dan used to be a major contributor

Associated Press sources report Associated Press working on iPad app (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Business Insider's The Wire is reporting, rather humorously, that AP sources have the scoop that the Associated Press is working on its own iPad app. It will reportedly be a paid subscription news app that generates content from the AP and more than 1,000 member newspapers and broadcasters. The AP follows the New York Times and other news sources that are developing applications for the iPad. While the AP doesn't say if the app would be available for the iPad launch late next month, the hope is that its eventual release will generate sales from the three million people who have downloaded their free iPhone app and would be willing to pay for the apps features on a larger-screen device. To get users interested in the app, it may be free upon initial launch. The group already has drawn up plans to charge for an application designed for the iPad, a

Der Condé Nast-Verlag arbeitet an iPad-Versionen seiner Magazine Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker und Glamour.

iPad Exclusive: AP News (Apple iPhone Apps)

Consuming the news will easily be one of the many uses of Apple’s magical tablet when the iPad finally arrives this weekend. Whether you’re using Safari to read from your favorite online newspaper or using a native app, there’s sure to be plenty of choices. One of the first native apps out the gate is a popular one, AP News. The well regarded news agency should be familiar to anyone who’s ever read the latest breaking news headlines in the world today. The Associated Press already has an iPhone version available and at iPad launch will give users an enhanced version of their great news app to take advantage of the extra screen space. You’ll be able to enjoy news stories from a variety of categories and also be able to view galleries of photos and videos of what’s happening in current events.
AP News for iPad a missed opportunity (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Having made most of my living in the news business, I'm pretty much a news junkie. As a result, I've loaded my iPad up with a lot of news applications so I can keep up throughout the day. I'd taken some pretty strong issue with the failings of the AP News app for the iPhone, but the iPad version hits a new low in design and function. Let's start at the beginning. When you launch the app, you are presented with a screen that has little strips of news on what appears to be a cloth background. Each strip is a story. You can get about six of these strips on the iPad screen. That's pretty silly, since the screen is so large and the strips are so small. You would think the people that designed this app would use the extra space for more content, but that isn't the case.

There are many people right now who received an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas this year. Many of them may or may not yet know their way around iOS, the operating system that those iDevices run on. Most essential, to begin with, are the Apps. You’ve all heard the old catchphrase “There’s an App for that.” Well, that’s because there often is.
Android App Tablet Review: AP Mobile - Android app review - Phil Hornshaw | Appolicious ™ Android App Directory (Android Apps - Daily video reviews by AndroidApps.com)

The AP Mobile app looks good and reads well on tablets and offers a great deal of news and video. Unfortunately, the app has a tendency to hang up and feels a little unstable. Once you’ve narrowed your location, the app compiles the day’s top headlines, sports and even “wacky” news stories right at your fingertips. Stories are presented very cleanly, but it’s easy to find pictures to expand and videos to watch alongside the text-heavy AP stories. The tablet screen is used to full effect by AP Mobile, but the app suffers from some performance issues. Sometimes videos won’t load, and the app occasionally stalls when you try to tap into a story or another tab. Those issues aside, AP Mobile presents a whole lot of news for free, and reading it on your tablet won’t make you crazy. News junkies: This one should be on your home screen.

I didn't like the previous releases of AP News for iPhone and iPad. They crashed a lot, were unattractive and generally bland to use. Fortunately, the Associated Press (AP) has released a replacement app called AP Mobile (free, universal). It has many improvements, most notably in the overall look and feel. Even better, the GUI is consistent across the iPhone and iPad versions, which wasn't the case with AP News. AP Mobile looks better than its predecessor, but provides minimal customization. You can choose white text on a dark gray background, dark gray text on an off-white background and adjust font sizes. News categories you're not interested in can be disabled (tech news is disabled by default for some reason). What's odd is that the pictures and video portions of the app ignore your category choices. If I turn off sports, for example, I still get sports photos and videos. That's
