Audible finally arrives on the iPhone (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

I've been an Audible fan for far longer then I've owned an iPhone; when I first launched the App Store, Audible was one of the first things I searched for. Thanks to some of the changes made in iOS 4.0, some of the largest challenges for an Audible iPhone app we've written about in the past are no longer a problem. I'm really excited that a free Audible app has finally arrived on the App Store! Ironically, while you can create an Audible account from the app, you aren't able to browse Audible's selection or purchase books; plan on making a round trip to Safari whenever you want to buy something. Additionally, there are some older titles that have not yet been made available in a format ready for wireless delivery, but Audible claims over 75,000 titles are available. One annoyance with the application is that you will need to be

Friday Five: July 16th, 2010 (148 Apps)

Our Friday Five feature is back, along with five new apps from the past week. We've got audiobooks, a new Clickgamer game, a free map app, and more. What're you waiting for? Read on! Where is the summer going? My apologies for last week’s lack of a Friday Five. We’re back this week, though, with five interesting apps from the past week, just like always. Enjoy! Hellsing’s Fire Hellsing’s Fire is a beautifully illustrated puzzle-adventure game from Clickgamer (Angry Birds, anyone?). Dr. Hellsing’s illuminating torch and his assistant Raffton’s tonics are both necessary to defeat the undead hordes. The puzzles are trumpeted as being “quick but rewarding”…sounds great for pick-up-and-play or, you know, losing hours of your life. With 90 monster-packed levels, Crystal integration for leaderboards and achievements, and wry dialogue, Hellsing’s Fire looks to be a great new App Store game. $0.99 Released: 2010-07-10 :: Category: Games Audible Audible.com is

Audible in-app purchases no longer available in the iOS app (IntoMobile)

Audible is among the first “victims” of Apple’s new policy to charge 30% for in-app purchases, just like it does on app downloads. The audio book service can’t justify such a cut in margins and has decided to provide users with a link to their mobile website instead. This work around solution will definitely cripple the user experience for many folks, hence at least partially hitting profits Audible was making from iPhone users. Then again, as far as I can tell, most of their money comes from subscriptions and the iOS app was used just to download and listen to audiobooks… Actually that’s the way I’m using Audible. Anyway, you’ve probably already been prompted to update the Audible app and if you still haven’t pushed the button maybe it would be wiser not to take that road at all — that of course is in case you actually buy individual books

iPhone apps help the blind in all kinds of ways (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

We've heard of the iPhone being used in all kinds of situations, but here's a new one for me. Blind iPhone users are making wide use of the device for identifying objects visually. This writeup over at The Atlantic has more, telling the story of two blind women who use Apple's little mobile phone to do things like identify the color of clothing, scan money bills for their values, and even tell them where they are, via GPS and voice controls. The Audible app will also read books out loud, and there are apps to tell the user where they're pressing on the screen, and even "speech texting" through HeyTell, which is an app that I know a few sighted people use as well. In the future, these blind users would like even more, specifically better integration of Siri with voice controls (which is something that I think everyone would like),
