'Canabalt' – Run For Your Life! (Touch Arcade)

I got a first look at Semi Secret Software's Canabalt [App Store] back at GDC Austin, received a preview build a few days later, and since then the game has soaked up an extraordinary amount of my free time. Canabalt has the same appeal to it as other extremely simple games for the iPhone like Doodle Jump [99¢] or the various NimbleBit games such as Scoops [$1.99]. The premise is simple-- You play as a guy who is running across roof tops attempting to escape from some kind of alien invasion that is constantly taking place in the background scenery. Along the way you will need to hop over boxes, break through windows, jump from crumbling buildings, and avoid other obstacles. The only control you have in the game is over your character's jumping. Tapping anywhere on screen jumps, and the longer you press the screen the higher you jump. What

Weekly App Store Picks: October 10, 2009 (TheAppleBlog)

It’s the weekend and I’m over in London investigating a host of new iPhone apps out later this year. In the meantime, I’ve hand-picked four of the latest releases from the App Store for you to check out. This week I’ve selected a smattering of fun games. My top pick for this week is Canabalt, plus I’ve also been looking at Nota, Tap Tap Revenge 3 and Real Football 2010. Earlier this week Adobe announced that the latest version of Flash, version CS5, will support iPhone app development. What this means is that an app can be created using Flash and then effectively rendered out as an iPhone-compatible app file. Ustwo, who I spoke to earlier this week, prototyped its minimalist designer game .™ in 48 hours using Flash. With CS5, developers will be able to handle prototyping and development without leaving Flash. What this means for us folk who download apps

Canabalt [App Store, $2.99] is one of those game concepts that was done 100% right. The objective is to run across rooftops, gaining enough speed to jump from building to building. Along the way there’s tons of stuff to slow you down such as crates, birds, and even giant bombs that drop out of the sky to vaporize you. The truly epic soundtrack combined with the fast paced, simple gameplay makes Canabalt one heck of an addicting game. It’s available for $2.99 in the App Store, but you can get a taste at canabalt.com. Your time = gone. You’re welcome. Categories: News Tags: analyst, line

Best iPhone Games: October 2009 (Touch Arcade)

Our October game ratings are in place now, and here are the top of the heap. Our monthly "best of" round-up summarizes the top rated games that we looked at in the previous month. Each game reviewed receives a 1-5 star rating relative to the other games from that month. Generally, a 3 or higher is considered a "good" rating. Our final scores are not the product of any traditionally objective measures such as graphics or sound, but simply reflect the games we would most recommend to others. October's "Best iPhone Games" are highlighted here: Soosiz - This is the best platforming game that we've played on the iPhone. It adopts the usual trappings of a traditional 2d platformer but perfectly mixes in a gravity defying mechanism that turns out to be a lot more than just a cute gimmick. Combine that with great controls and a ton of content, and

11.12.09 AppCraver recently spoke with Michael D’Ulisse, Chief Marketing Officer of More Blu Sky, Incorporated. He shares his experiences developing for the iPhone and iPod touch. When did you start developing apps for the iPhone? Did you have previous experience as a developer? Me and my brother, Matt, started developing apps in february of this year. I had purchased a Macbook Pro with my bonus money from my day job and I surrendered the computer to my brother so that he could learn Objective-C As a Computer Engineer, Matt has written code for years. Recently he had been more hands off with the code and was working as a IT Manager. Part of what made it so exciting for him to program iPhone apps was that he was back writing code, which is what he loves most. I think for both of us it’s sort of a release

November 13th, 2009 Daniel Silva I’m sure you’ve heard of Tim Langdell and the EDGE conflict. Langdell, CEO of EDGE games, is in a tantrum with anybody who uses the word EDGE in their video game. So these developers band together and try to push Langdell’s buttons some more! No not Canabalt you idiot, it’s CanabEDGE! Tt’s what all the cool kids are playing. Atomic EDGE Games presents Canabedge. You can play it for free here. I’m sorry but… SUCK IT LANGDELL!! Yep you heard it right, it’s the sequel to Eliss, EDGELISS. Coming soon: EDGELISS – the sequel to Eliss – will revolutionize iPhone gaming with new groundbreaking concepts that will blow everybody’s mind: EDGE-D (boosts infinite dimensions way beyond 4D), EDGE-Touch (touch with way more than just your fingers), and EDGE-Black (where sounds and visuals become way much cooler). No no silly not stair dismount. This is much better,

Canabalt [2.99] is getting online leaderboards and some additional obstacles in the not too distant future. We were recently given a sneak peek and shot some video of the new update which hopefully will be released any time now: The new obstacles include a mangled billboards to run across, and a mysteriously massive object that rips apart an entire building which can be seen at the end of the above video. This new huge space-craft (if that is what it is) crashing in to your path has never failed at ending even my best runs since getting the update.
There’s a new dot update to the ultra-simple, ultra-awesome platforming game Canabalt (my quasi-review here). It keeps things pretty simple for the most part, adding a new music track, a global scoreboard, more obstacles and backgrounds, and some slightly improved performance. I’m actually just surprised that the core gameplay has been improved at all, since I was expecting simple bug fixes and more ways to share with Facebook or Twitter from here on out. All in all a nice, pleasant Sunday surprise from Semi Secret Software.

MobileMe iDisk, PCalc and PCalc Lite, I Am T-Pain — Quick App Updates! (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Dec 16, 2009 | Some quick App Store updates this week, including Mobile iDisk 1.1, PCalc and Pcalc Lite 1.9, I Am T-Pain 1.2, and Canabalt 1.2. (Not that the iTunes App Store is letting me download some of them!) MobileMe iDisk 1.1 [Free - iTunes link] brings autocomplete for email, saves file sharing emails to your sent folder, allows tap-hold to copy or save to camera roll, cache is now embiggened to 500MB, plus faster downloads and more languages supported (Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish) PCalc 1.9 [$9.99 - iTunes link] adds more themes and what-not, but the real news is PCalc Lite 1.9 [Free - iTunes link] which lets you get the basic calc functionality free, and then use in-app-purchase to buy only those features you need, only when you need them. This includes a theme pack ($0.99)

With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform

While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is an excellent starting place to catch you up.
After I put together my list of 10 awesome free Mac apps for 2009, a lot of folks asked me when the iPhone list was coming out. How about ? Get ready, because I'm about to tell you how to spend those iTunes gift cards you got for Christmas. I've selected an eclectic little group of apps that includes games, productivity tools, chat and more, and it makes a great starter kit for anyone who's new to the iPhone. Advanced iPhone users might even discover a new gem or two. Strap in and tap your App Store icon ... here's 2009 in iPhone apps: The iPhone's built-in camera is pretty good, but by no means great.

For the last 10 games to make our Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, did you see what I did there? Notice how I rephrased the classic “Best of the Rest” to “Rest of the Best”? The reasoning behind that is I wanted to divide the games into 5 sections and I just couldn’t find a coherent theme to glue these last 10 games together. They’re in NO WAY better or less than the first 40. Let’s just get that out the way… CANABALT, a very respectable port of the Flash game to the iPhone. The soundtrack and artwork look suited for more “serious” gamers than With the latest update including scoreboards and a new soundtrack, no wonder this is a serious gaming addiction. STAIR DISMOUNT, the game’s first released started a bit slow in a sense that some key features are missing. In a game where the goal is to throw

Canabalt Review: Excellent, Elegant And Exhilarating Casual Game! (The App Era)

**WIN A COPY FREE. FIND OUT HOW AFTER JUMP** You’ve heard us blab about Arthur Ham’s for many weeks now, but let’s meet its “more hardcore” cousin battling robots and tall buildings. For $2.99 and an indie dev release, it may look surprising how this app got legions of 4-star rated AppStore reviews. Once we launched the game, there wasn’t even question… this game deserved every bit of those stars packing action, control simplicity and elegant game design onto one epic game. Presentation In complete contrast with Arthur Ham’s this game is set in a gritty and dark world of what seems to be an alien invasion. The colors used are variations of the colors black, gray and white which perfectly set a unique tone to Canabalt. Every bit of detail is put into the game including pieces of shattered windows flying all over the place, laser sounds, and TWO game

I’ve reviewed a fair number of iPhone games for the site, and have played even more. The number of games I’ve played pales in comparison to some of the other dedicated iPhone gaming sites out there, but I like to think I have a feeling of what the platform’s gaming landscape is like. I’ve gotten to review some of the bigger releases over the past few months, but it’s the smaller games from smaller developers that have really held my attention. I suppose that makes sense, since grand, sweeping stories or specifically designed levels don’t hit me as much the second time around. But there’s just something more about Blue Attack!, Canabalt, and Minigore that keep me coming back month after month. [mouse over a thumbnail to see the game name] Blue Attack! – $1.99 Here’s a game that I never reviewed. It’s a funny thing (haha), reviewing. You can really

The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps] (Gizmodo)

Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is

25 iPhone Games That Should Rock on the iPad (Mac|Life)

Posted 02/04/2010 at 2:53pm | by Andrew Hayward Apple's iPad announcement event didn't put an especially large focus on the gaming possibilities of the new device, but what was shown demonstrated how easily developers can modify current iPhone and iPod touch apps with just a brief time investment. We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! We love swapping Bejeweled 2's shimmering gems on our Macs, but we also dig the tactile feeling of actually flipping the gems in

F is for Falling asleep while this particular game loads. It’s also for falling from 40,000 feet and forcing your little skydiver through flocks of birds, over hot air balloons, and past the deadly rotors of passing planes, for as long as you can before you meet your inevitable death. But let’s just get back to the first thing I said: this $0.99 title, which feels a bit like Doodle Jump played I’m reverse, takes a whopping 12 seconds to load. Given that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars can load up in three seconds flat, I’m really not sure why this game takes so long to get into. I’m giving the developer the benefit of the doubt here and am assuming that the long load time will be addressed in a timely fashion (soon, please!). Otherwise, I don’t really see too many people playing this title more than once. I think

GDC 2010: Hands-on with Faraway (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Steph Thirion's first iPhone game was Eliss, a touchscreen-based arcade game that had you combining and maneuvering planets around one another, and trying to size-match them up with black holes to earn points. As he told us (stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the indie developer), it was pretty hard -- even more so than he actually intended it to be. So, for his second iPhone game, Faraway, he's gone much simpler. Inspired by the iPhone game Canabalt, Thirion has created a one-button game in which the goal is nothing less than to explore the universe. He has it running on a Mac at the show (so he can project the video onto a bigger screen), and we got to have some hands-on time with the new game. You control a comet that flies around an inky black void speckled with dots and circles; the pixelated space aesthetic from Eliss

Chop Chop Runner Ninja Jumps Into The App Store (Apple iPhone Apps)

Gamerizon has just released the second game that takes place in their Chop Chop world titled Chop Chop Runner, a running game similar to Canabalt but with a whole lot of ninja moves. In Chop Chop Runner you are once again in complete control of Iro-san, the little ninja that could, and you must rescue a beautiful princess from the clutches of evil. Chop Chop Runner shares the same adorable and colorful cartoon design as Chop Chop Ninja and, thankfully, shares the same single finger tap controls. The idea of Chop Chop Runner is to run as far as possible without succumbing to the many enemies or falling down a hole. Your ninja runs forward automatically, where the further you get the faster he goes, and you can leap over holes with a single tap on the screen. A quick tap will make your ninja jump only a short distance, while tapping and

Apr 27th 2010 at 12:30PM I'm going to give this one a try, even though TUAW screwed me out of 99 cents with your review of "HoloToy," where you said - and I quote - "...If you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you should download it right now..." among other smoke-blowing praise. Those of you who haven't tried it - don't bother. Complete waste of time and money. App loses its appeal about ten second after opening it for the first time. It's nothing but a pretty, shimmering picture to look at. Worthless. I hope this one's better. "but in Above, you actually hold down a finger to "charge" a jump, which adds a little more strategy to it." Er, you have to hold down your finger in Canabalt, too, for longer jumps. Clearly you haven't been playing it to win. :P TUAW (or The Unofficial Apple Weblog) is

Just for Fun: CANABALT Typing Tutor Edition (IntoMobile)

One of my favorite iPhone games (for some time now) has been CANABALT. The game is simple. You’re a guy, running along rooftops, jumping between buildings and through windows… trying to escape what looks like earth’s destruction. Armageddon, one might say. Aliens (or something) are invading, and they’ll often get in your path as well, but can be avoided with a mighty jump. I happened to stumble upon a new web version of the game (at least I think it’s new), and it features 3 gameplay modes. The first and second mode allow you to use the space bar or double-click function on your mouse to jump… the third method (and this is the interesting one) forces you to type in the letter displayed at the top of the screen to jump. Who knew iPhone developers could have education at heart? At any rate, check it out right here at Adamatomic.

Vediamola insieme! .
A couple days ago we first posted about NoCanWin.com's Cubed Rally Racer [$1.99] and the few screenshots along with the trailer saw a huge response both in comments and on our forums. Two days later, and the game is here. The original teaser line the developer emailed us of "RC Pro-Am meets Canabalt [$2.99]" couldn't be a more apt comparison, as Cubed Rally Racer does a great job of combining both the retro feel of isometric NES-era racing games with complete randomization to never play the same track twice. The goal of Cubed Rally Racer is simple, make it to the end of the track without running out of fuel. You control your car with a set of buttons to turn right or left along with a gas pedal button to accelerate. The controls do take a few races to get used to, as they work exactly like the retro racing

A week ago we reported that not only is Adult Swim's Robot Unicorn Attack coming to the iPhone, but they also planned to have it on the App Store by the 1st of June for $2.99. Well, thanks to the magic that is Apple's approval process, their launch date has slipped to simply "June," but after having played a development build of the game, I can say with some amount of authority that it will be worth the wait. Robot Unicorn Attack is one of the many Flash games available on the Adult Swim games portal. Since its release, it has been remarkably popular, and for a good reason: Robot Unicorn Attack strikes a perfect balance between Canabalt [$2.99] style survival platforming, unicorns, rainbows, and most importantly, Erasure. As of this writing, the Robot Unicorn Attack flash game has been played over 21 million times. Gameplay is identical to that of

Semi Secret Software's survival side-scroller Canabalt [$2.99] went universal this afternoon, and while (like most pixel art games) it looked great upscaled on the iPad, Canabalt is even more awesome running at the full 1024x768 resolution. If this is the first you've heard of , check out our review: Canabalt can be played for free online, and the paid iPhone game is nearly identical aside from the fact that you're clicking your mouse instead of tapping with your finger. I really can't recommend this game enough. We awarded it five stars in our October '09 Best iPhone Games Listing, and it's one of the few games that not only has stayed on my phone since it was released last year, but also a game I play nearly every day. A word of warning before updating, Canabalt 1.4 does seem to wipe out your local scores when you install it. If you

Jun 22nd 2010 at 3:30PM Er, that would be the Canabalt that intentionally has pixellated graphics? I don't really see what an iPad-specific version would have over a pixel-doubled iPhone version.

If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we

Canabalt iPad (AppVee)

Canabalt is a project that began as a simple game created to be a test and eventually became something more. The app has become a hit in the app store due to its addictive gameplay and has now been brought to the iPad. The game is essentially a time trial game where you try to get as far as possible before your inevitable doom comes. If any of you have ever played Runner, this game is almost exactly the same idea. The game has a pretty simple design with only a few colors and shapes to make up its levels. But the real beauty is in the way the game makes you feel. Any of you who follow parkour will understand the rush that comes when moving quickly from point A to point B. This same rush is almost captured through the up beat music, birds, glass, and rolls. Though the

Semi Secret Software seem to be making a name for themselves as developers of games with great pixel art graphics, fantastic music, and high-score centric gameplay that in the case of Canabalt [$2.99] has kept me coming back for just one more try for the better part of a year now. Gravity Hook HD [$2.99] hit the App Store tonight, and provides much of what I loved about Canabalt, only in a vertical climb instead of a side scrolling run. In the game you play as a lovable little robot with a grappling hook who ascends to, well, wherever he's climbing to, by grabbing on to a randomized series of orbs, reeling himself in, then flinging to the next one. Unlike Canabalt which you could hand to anyone with it running on your phone and say "tap the screen to jump," Gravity Hook HD has a bit of a learning curve

The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year (TechCrunch)

Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that

After spending a considerable amount of time with Halfbrick Studios' upcoming game, Monster Dash, I've found my new favorite iPhone game. The games I seem to spend the most time with on my phone are pick up and play highly randomized games that are fun to play for only a few minutes at a time. Canabalt [$2.99] nailed it, and has been one of my go to games for nearly a year now. Monster Dash takes Canabalt one step farther, and instead of just running faster and faster jumping in between buildings, you're armed with a shotgun, and need to mow down an endless horde of monsters wandering about in your path. Included in the game are multiple settings ranging from the zombie infested cityscape seen above, to an asian themed setting where you're running on top of a huge wall. While running around, you warp between these settings and your

It's not very often that a game comes along on the App Store that is too different to really liken it to anything. I suppose since the game involves going moving to the right it could be compared to Canabalt [$2.99] or Line Rider iRide [$1.99] since you're technically drawing the line that your character skis on, but neither seem like apt comparisons. In Solipskier [$2.99], you draw the mountain that your skier flies down by placing your finger on the screen. When you pick your finger up, you stop drawing but your skier keeps going-- So, by tapping and moving your finger around you can create slopes of all kinds, along with ramps and huge jumps. The way this all works on the iPhone goes together so well with the touchscreen that I was more than a little surprised in researching this game for this review that it started its

The wild popularity of Fruit Ninja [99¢ / HD] is a hard act to follow, but I think Halfbrick's next game is more than up to snuff. In Monster Dash {99¢], you play as Barry Steakfries, a man who loves two things in life: Running and killing monsters. Of course I don't know him personally, but I've been able to discern as much from spending the past week playing Monster Dash in almost every second of spare time I can find. Monster Dash is a randomly generated survival platformer where you run to the right as long as you can, much like Canabalt [$2.99]. This is where the Canabalt similarities end, as between Barry Steakfries and wherever he's running to is an array of monsters which all must be either avoided or slain. Barry's default weapon is a shotgun, which has limited range, but along the way you will find weapon

Killer Strategies For Six of Our Favorite iOS Games (Mac|Life)

Posted 10/13/2010 at 2:27pm | by The Mac|Life Staff We love our iOS games. In fact, we've played some of them so much we were able to come up with some helpful hints for six of our favorite games. » If you’re not playing a Druid character and would like to get some cheap healing, learn the Regeneration spell from the Troll. This will help save Blue Mana and won’t end your turn unless your enemy uses a Resists Magic spell. » Get a Giant Rat mount if you can. The Rat is easy to beat in the training game, and, once leveled high enough, will allow you to avoid road monsters while adding a valuable Cunning bonus in combats. » Practice! Beating even one stage unlocks Eternal mode, which lets you play without a time limit and improve your skills. Use this to your advantage, especially if you’re getting used

It's Wednesday, which means that 11:00 PM EST tonight there's going to be a whole slew of games appearing for download on the App Store. It's the same song and dance as every week, and if you live in an area where it's already Wednesday night or Thursday morning (like New Zealand) these games will already be available for download. Otherwise, wait a bit and as the world turns all of these games will slowly filter out to your regional App Store.
'SteamBirds' by Semi Secret Software Now Available (Touch Arcade)

New from the developer who brought us Canabalt [$2.99] and Gravity Hook HD [$2.99] comes SteamBirds [99¢/HD], an iOS port of the Flash game of the same name. Like Semi Secret's other games, SteamBirds takes an incredibly simple game mechanic and marries it with high quality presentation. At its core, SteamBirds is a turn-based strategy game featuring dogfighting aircraft from a top-down perspective. In an alternate history where a scientist accidentally discovers cold fusion in the mid-19th century, this new technology is used to create high-velocity steam-powered weapons on airplanes. These planes are then deployed into combat to complete the 21 missions in SteamBirds. Controlling your fleet of planes in SteamBirds is simple, and a nice tutorial during the first few levels explains all of the ins and outs. A small line sticks out from the front of your aircraft which represents the distance that each plane can travel per turn.

Now it's even easier to fit in a Monster Dash [$.99] quickie between boring work-related stuff like Mail checking and .PDF reading. A new update for the action platformer is now live on Apple's servers, adding "lightning speed" (read: much faster) App switching capabilities. Never get caught looking at Monster Dash instead of Hannah Montana fan fiction again, am I right guys? Oh, wait… Halfbrick also let us know that Monster Dash is now a universal app courtesy of this update and, according to the studio, the game has been completely optimized for play on the tablet. I've spent some time with this version and can confirm that it works just as well as its iPhone and iPod Touch counterparts. Go nuts if you already own it. But should you grab Monster Dash for the first time, you might be asking yourself? It's always best to check our review first when

The popularity of Canabalt seems to have spawned a whole genre of games on the App Store. I remain a fan of Monster Dash, and Tomena Sanner is another fascinating spin on the very basic one-button gameplay. Now here comes I Must Run, another running-style game that has you as a character running on a 2D field, trying to avoid gaps and obstacles by jumping and punching your way through. Despite the fact that this borrows a lot (if not actually everything) from Canabalt and its followers, there's no denying that "IMR" (as developer Gamelion Studios calls it in a teasing FAQ on the app's description) has its own verve as well. The style is very well done. You play a prisoner running from a prison, and there's a little more story here (some of it in the form of a motion comic) than the other games that tend to go

Indie iPhone Holiday Sale – 6 iOS Games Drop to 99¢ to Raise Money for Charity (Touch Arcade)

'Tis the season of giving, and in recognition of this six independent iOS developers have banded together to not only give you a great deal on their games, but also give some cheer to less fortunate gamers around the world. From December 21st to December 31st, 6 games will be available individually on the App Store for just 99¢ each, one of which has notoriously never been on sale before: Canabalt. It's all for a good cause, though, as one-third of all total sales earned during this promotion period will be donated to Child's Play Charity, an organization that collects video games, toys, books, money, and more for children who are spending time ill in hospitals throughout North America and the world. Here is a list of App Store links to the 6 games that are 99¢ as part of the Indie sale along with links to each developer's website and

The popular Humble Indie Bundle for the Mac has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity and has become an inspiration for other indie developers looking to follow their lead. In that spirit, six independent iPhone game developers have banded together and are offering their games at a US$2-$3 discount. The devs will give 1/3 of the sale proceeds to Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and video games to children's hospitals across the U.S. The bundle includes six games which will be sold for US$0.99 each. Due to the limitation of the iTunes App Store, each title will be sold separately and not as a $6 bundle. The bundle includes titles like Osmos, a physics-based, cosmic survival game and Drop 7, a puzzle game that mixes the best of Sudoku and Tetris. Games rounding out this indie offering include Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, Solipskier, Eliss and

Holiday App Sales Galore (148 Apps)

To celebrate the season a whole bunch of apps are going on sale. Here's the most comprehensive list available for which apps are seeing a discount. Last month our Thanksgiving meals were stuffed with lots of deeply discounted apps, and it seems that publishers are getting into the Christmas spirit in much the same way. We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations, many at their lowest prices ever. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time. Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

The developers behind Canabalt confirmed that the game's source code will be made available as part of an open source project. The game will be licensed under the MIT Open Source license, which will let other developers use the engine source code in its entirety for both personal and commercial projects. While the code powering the game is available for the world to use, the game art, sounds, animations and Canabalt game-specific code is still proprietary. Basically, you cannot re-package their game and claim it as your own, but you can use the underlying engine code to power your own game. The developers warn prospective parties that the code behind the game may not be "ideal or optimal." The game was self-admittedly ported to the iPhone in a rush and was done so before the iPhone 4 and iPad were even released. Only two developers have worked on the game and

One of my all-time favorite games for iOS, Canabalt, has gone open source on us. For real. The developers at Semi Secret Software have released all of the source code, music, graphics and a bunch of other goodies for everyone from serious app developers and casual hacks around the world to tinker with. How cool is that? (If you want to jump right into the open source goodness, go here) Triggering the release of this goodness was the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale, which Semi Secret took part in. To date the sale has raised over $25,000 for Child’s Play, an organization that brings games and toys to children in hospitals around the world. Very admirable indeed. In the spirit of charity and holiday gift giving, Semi Sonic have pushed the games internal workings to open source for everyone from seasoned devs to hobby-time programmers to play around with. If you’ve ever

Posted 01/04/2011 at 10:30am | by Cory Bohon Canabalt has been an addicting Flash browser-based game for some time, but the iPhone and iPad version of the game changed where we could play this game. Now, thanks to the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale, the developers have been able to give 1/3 of the profits from the game to charity this holiday season. According to a post by the Canabalt developers, sales of the game has been able to raise $25,350.25 for Child's Play charity. This organization helps bring toys and games to children in hospitals all around the world. But, the developers didn't stop there. They have also opened up the source code of Canabalt for anyone who would like to tinker around with the code. They have also provided some statistics about the game: - Flash prototype created in 5 days by Adam- Ported to iOS in 10 days by

Canabalt, $2.99 - After raising more than $30,000 for the Child's Play Charity as part of the Indie iPhone Game Sale over the holidays, developer Semi Secret decided to celebrate by making their game Canabalt open source for people to tinker around with or use to create their own game (with limitations, of course). The Canabalt code that was released as open source was an even more up to date version of the game than what was currently in the App Store. Now this improved version has become available as an update for iOS owners of the game. The update features Retina Display graphics and 60fps on iPad and 4th generation devices, Game Center integration for high scores, and other performance optimizations and fixes. Significantly, this update appears to have finally fixed the long standing problem of stuttering and choppiness on 3rd generation devices. Canabalt running at a rock solid 60fps

Posted 02/15/2011 at 9:07am | by Andrew Groen Neverending one-button platformers have become extremely popular on the iPhone over the past year. Games like Canabalt [iTunes Link] proved you didn't need complicated design to engage players for hours. Now, indie developer Honeyslug is taking that formula a step further with their new release Poto and Cabenga. You control not one but two characters with a single button. The game stars two characters simultaneously (who we can only assume are named Poto and his horse Cabenga, or perhaps the other way around.) As the game begins, the two are riding together through the desert, until Poto is eaten by a giant flying creature! The screen then splits as the symbiotic Poto and Cabenga are controlled with just one button. Poto is trying to make it out of the creature's belly, while Cabenga rushes below to keep pace so the two aren't separated.

Last month at Macworld 2011 I spent some time playing with XMG Studio’s latest game Cows vs Aliens [99¢], and yesterday it became available for download in the App Store. Cows vs Aliens is a super casual high scoring game that uses a gameplay mechanic that struck me as especially unique. I enjoyed my ten minutes or so of playing Cows vs Aliens at Macworld, but now that I have the full game in my hands I’m liking it even more and finding it especially hard to put down. In Cows vs Aliens, waves of cows will appear from the bottom of the screen and it’s your job to herd them into the barn opening located at the top of the screen. Touching the screen creates a circular barrier of sorts, and you’ll use these to push the cows along in the right direction. Making this task more difficult are aliens

Late last year, the developer who created popular indie game Canabalt released the game's source code under an MIT open source license. This license lets other developers use the underlying game engine to power their own games for either private or commercial distribution. While the underlying engine is free to use, the Canabalt developer clearly states other developers cannot "distribute or redistribute our game code, art or sounds." Unfortunately, PLD Soft may have violated this open source license by taking the source code, repackaging it with minimal changes and submitting it to the App Store as an app called Free Running. Apple approved this Canabalt clone, and it is now available for free. While it may prevent the entry of harmful and poorly written applications into the App Store, Apple's approval process is not perfect. Just last week, a Mario clone made its way into the App Store, and now we

posted by Jonathan Kizer on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 4:36 am. It’s not every year that a relatively small niche of a growing industry gets featured in a prominent book of world records, but that’s exactly what has happened. In this year’s version of the Guinness Book of World Records: Gamer Edition, many developers of popular games for iOS, and for more traditional platforms like the PC, have been immortalized in the pages of a book. The following iOS games are highlighted: The following are also given honors, but don’t exist on iOS (yet): The games that were mentioned were all considered “experiments,” given that they were developed on a much tighter budget, and often by first-time coders with a vision. Take Minecraft, for example: the game is now a phenomenom, but who could have guessed that a game with 8-bit, square graphics could thrive among today’s games like Uncharted, Call

The conversation kicks off with a light discussion of Adam’s oddly elaborate sandwich and then into other much more hard-hitting topics such as the themes and ideas that went into, ultimately, the creation of Canabalt, what Adam offers the indie games community, and several of his other games including Zits & Giggles and Wurdle [$1.99], one of the first iOS word games to hit the App Store. You can download this episode directly or stream it via the links provided below or, hey, you can even subscribe to our fair podcast via iTunes or the Zune Marketplace. This is an awesome and honest discussion that I think you’ll like. We’ll be back, of course, with another bonus episode next

'INC' Review - A Comic Inspired Platformer, with "Ratatat" Guns (Touch Arcade)

OrangePixel have a few iOS platform games under their belt. Back in June, we reviewed Meganoid [$1.99] calling it a quality retro platformer with responsive controls. In September, our review of Stardash [$1.99] highlighted the challenging difficulty levels and Game Boy style presentation. Plus they've released Super Drill Panic [$1.99] and Time Chaos [99¢]. Now, OrangePixel has released their latest action platform game, named simply: INC [$1.99], which is probably my favorite of their releases. INC uses a comic-inspired silhouette art style which immediately captured my interest. Your character is a square with legs and blinking little eyes who runs, jumps and shoots his way through levels that are intentionally pixelated with rough edges. The graphics are 8-bit and chunky, with backgrounds reminiscent of Canabalt [$2.99]. And there's a chip-tune soundtrack, which is always popular in any retro platform game. Another distinctive feature is that when you fire your gun, the word

5th Cell's New iOS Game Is 'Run Roo Run' (Touch Arcade)

Scribblenauts [$.99] developer 5th Cell isn't one-and-done with iPhone and iPad. This Thursday, actually, will see the release of its second game, a "micro-platformer" called Run Roo Run. It looks remarkably 5th Cell, and according to exclusive details given to Joystiq, it certainly sounds like a game we'll definitely be getting into. In a nutshell, Run Roo Run is an extremely cutesy and heavily instance-based runner -- think, Canabalt [$.99] but with levels and a kangaroo. The experience is sliced and diced into a series of 420 individual levels that are, also, divided cleanly into chapters that all introduce new obstacles or other new elements, like, items. Each week 5th Cell plans to push 10 more additional levels to the game without the need to update. One really interesting thing that popped up during the Joystiq interview about Run Roo Run was the subject of its inspiration. The initial idea came

GDC 2012: Hands On With 'Hundreds' (Touch Arcade)

Back in January we brought you the news that Semi Secret Software, the studio behind Canabalt [$2.99], was working on a new game with Greg Wohlwend, best known for his work on Solipskier [$0.99]. We've had the chance to get our hands on an early build of the game and can give you some of the details. First up, Hundreds is a minimalistic puzzle game. As you can see from the screenshots, it has a stark black, red and grey look, one that's carried through every part of the game. It plays something like Surfacer [$0.99] or similar titles: you have a series of circles, and touching them makes them grow until you hit a certain goal. In this case each circle counts up toward 100, the total you need to hit between them all. But that's where the similarities to other titles end. The circles move around each level, and

'Canabalt' Hits PSP Minis (Touch Arcade)

Adam Saltsman and Semi Secret's moody and atmospheric daring escape runner, Canabalt [$2.99], will soon be available for download across the PSP, PS3, and PS Vita in the US. The studio, in collaboration with The Beatshapers, have launched a PSP Minis version of the game in Europe. A US version of the flash-turned-iOS-turned-Minis game will follow later this week, Saltsman has said on the Twitters. We've been enjoying Canabalt on touch platforms for what feels like eons at this point, but that doesn't put a damper on our desire to check it out on other devices. Canabalt and its infinite action is as timeless and as fast as a vampire with track shoes. Here's a few screens and a trailer of this version: App Store Link: Canabalt, $2.99 (Universal) #3 Today, 06:01 AM Senior Member iPod Touch (4th Gen) Join Date: Jan 2011 Location: England Posts: 1,956 Ohhh Angry

'Canabalt' For Two: It Could Happen (Touch Arcade)

On the heels of the release of Canabalt across PSP, PS Vita, and PS3, Semi-Secret's Adam Saltsman is asking fans if they are interested in a possible 2-player mode for the phone versions of the often celebrated endless runner. "Would y'all be interested in seeing a 2-player mode in Canabalt [$2.99] on iOS and Android," he asked, simply, on Twitter. Speaking with us, Saltsman says that he's trying to gauge if such an endeavor would be worth it. He wants Canabalt, which debuted in 2009, to stay relevant, but he also understands the risk involved with post-release feature additions, no matter how simple they are to implement. The time it would take to do this, for example, is time that could be spent on another of his fresher projects. He says that any input into this matter is invaluable. He also says that he has other ideas for content, and if
