Stanza: download 10 free e-books from Random House and thousands more from other sources. I love reading books on my iPhone, but I don't love e-book prices. I mean, digital content requires no printing, binding, shipping, storage, or heavy lifting--so why does Amazon charge the same price for the Kindle edition of "The Kite Runner" as for the paperback? That's a debate for another day (though let me go on record saying I'd buy a lot more e-books if they were priced in the $1 to $4 range). For now, let's look at ways you can read on the cheap--or, at least, the cheaper--on your iPhone. Kindle: read a sample chapter of any book in Amazon's library before you spend your money. Read any good e-books lately? Scored any good deals? Give me your thoughts on e-books and what you think is a fair pricing model. Hey, maybe I'm just being

Steampunk Tales: A monthly magazine for your iPhone (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

When I was in high school, I learned about "penny dreadfuls" and their American counterpart, "dime novels." Steampunk Publishing is re-creating these popular publications by releasing what they bill as the first on-going magazine for the iPhone featuring pulp fiction -- in this case, stories set in the steampunk genre that is a take on our modern world through the eyes of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These stories are a great fit for this type of experimental publication, and doing this magazine through the iPhone is a great way to reap the rewards of a pulp fiction magazine without having to worry about the costs associated with a print run. The initial volume of Steampunk Tales #1 [link opens iTunes] contains 10 stories between 4,500 and 11,000 words. The included reader strives to recreate a Victorian-era feel as much as a possible, with a paper-like background and lavish fonts --

The Classics app for the iPhone “ which is a self-contained ebook reader offering a collection of famous literary works in one elegant package “ has just had an update, and added a little more great content to its shelves. The titles added in Version 1.3 are: ‘Through the Looking Glass ‘ by Lewis Carroll, ‘The Odysssey ‘ by Homer, and ‘The Art of War ‘ by Sun Tzu. If I ‘ve counted right, that brings it up to a total of 23 great works contained in the app. With the great content offered and excellent presentation of it, this is a heck of a good $0.99 app. Check out the latest version in the App Store, HERE.

eBook Roundup: 8 Apps for iPhone readers (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

An e-book (or ebook, or eBook, depending upon who you ask) is the digital equivalent of a paper book. According to KiwiTech, the publishers of Classics2Go, the market for eBooks has increased more than 60% over the last six years and growth from this point is expected to be very strong. We can reasonably connect the start of this burgeoning market to the release of the Amazon Kindle in 2007. Strong sales convinced some wary readers that this was a viable option. You could carry a few hundred books under your arm, and the reading experience was, well, acceptable. Going on a long trip? Wouldn't it be nice to take about 20 pounds of paper out of your luggage? 2007 also marked the introduction of the iPhone; it took about a year for eBook apps to appear on the iPhone. Now there are so many of them that finding the right

Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. [Note: all app links will open the iTunes App Store] I'm happy to see that Apple is maintaining focus on the number and variety of apps in the App Store, instead of resorting to the narcissistic, touchy-feely, celebrity-filled tripe that T-Mobile has been

Here Are More Apps for That: Three New iPhone Commercials From Apple (TheAppleBlog)

It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. New York Subway 09 ($4.99) — Navigate the labyrinth

Despite Apple's recent addition of the "Apps for Everything" section to their website, a new feature that makes it easier for iPhone owners to find great apps by category, the sad truth is that app discovery is still a challenge that needs to be solved. Thanks to some 75,000 applications now live in the iTunes App Store, there are just too many to sort through these days. Numerous startups have sprung up, offering their own solutions to this problem, including AppBeacon, Freshapps, 16apps, Appsfire, Appolicious, AppShopper and others. However, no one site has figured out the perfect formula just yet. Now another online catalog hopes to succeed where others have floundered. The brand-new App Classics aims to be the "App Store's missing Hall of Fame," featuring only the apps that have stood the test of time and are worth the download.
BookReader for iPhone: You can't judge a book by its cover (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

BookReader [iTunes Link] , a US$4.99 app for devices running OS 2.21 or higher, has just joined the crowded eBook market -- but it brings little to the table to recommend itself. The app when first run looks beautiful. You are shown a wonderfully rendered bookshelf which looks very similar to the one found in Classics [iTunes Link], but a bit more nicely rendered, showing the spines of books instead of covers in a scrolling list. Impressive, but now what? I really had no idea since there were no instructions on how to operate the app either in the app, or on the Readdle site. This, as I've often said, is a major downfall of many of the apps in the store. It would be fine if it were an adventure game, but not at all acceptable in something offering utility that you would like to get at quickly. The only

Apple Introduces iBooks Apps — Stands on Amazon’s Shoulders! (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Jan 27, 2010 | As part of their iPad announcement today, Apple introduced a new app called iBooks (hey, there’s that old name!) which they said stands on the shoulders of Amazon to go a little further. The initial GUI looks a lot like the iPhone ebook app Classics [iTunes link]. As rumored, $14.99 for a new “hardcover” book is the selling price. You can tap to change pages or swipe, and readers can choose their own font and size from a small list including Baskerville, Cochin, Palatino, Times, and Verdana. It uses standard ePub format, so hopefully it will be cross-compatible with a lot of other stores and existing collections. [Image via GDGT]

The new Apple iPad, as widely anticipated, will have an e-book reader built-in to the device. The iBooks app displays a bookshelf of all your titles alá Delicious Library or the Classics iPhone app. When you tap a book to read, you can tap on the right or left edge to flip the page or drag the page manually. When looking at your bookshelf, there is also a button to the iBook Store to purchase books. The iBookstore will allow for browsing and purchasing books on the iPad. What is exciting is that this new feature will rely on the ePub standard rather than some proprietary Apple format. ePub was developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum and works on several devices and platforms like the Sony Reader and Adobe Digital Editions for your desktop computer. You can think of it as the “MP3″ of e-book formats. Five large publishers (Penguin,

Apple Takes On Amazon With iBooks, iPad’s New eBook App (Apple iPhone Apps)

When rumors of an Apple tablet started to hit the web, the first thing that came to most people’s minds was that it would be a Kindle killer. Well, it’s certainly too early to assume that, being that the device won’t be shipping for another two months, but it will at least be able to compete with the Kindle thanks to a new native eBook app called iBooks. iBooks looks strikingly similar to the well-known iPhone eBook app Classics. It gives you access to tons of different books ranging from classics to bestseller from some of the biggest publishers, such as Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette. iBooks uses the standard ePub format, so hopefully it will be cross-platform with other online stores. When you purchase a book, it will be placed and displayed on your personal bookshelf. To read a book, simply tap it and it will open

App Sale: Classics (iPhoneAppReviews.net)

Tony M. | Jan 27, 2010 User rating: ( votes, average: out of 5) Loading ... Classics is on sale for free – normally $2.99 Classics is an extremely impressive book library for your iPod Touch and iPhone. Classics is streamlined, quick, and doesn’t lag, unlike many other book apps. The library to choose from is pretty unique, ranging from The Call of the Wild to The Art of War, and the selection is pretty beefy, clocking in about 20 full-length works. The books are a joy to flip through, and the app has a set of rather neat features (bookmarks, reading multiple books at once) that set it apart from other mobile bookshelves. Andrew Kaz and Phill Ryu created an impressive app that’s already a favorite in the app store, and is a fantastic deal right now. Edit: Almost forgot this link again, but I caught myself. I’m learning.

January 28th, 2010 James Isabel You’ll get a post from us later today concerning one of the iPad‘s best features: iBooks, BUT did you know Apple shamefully ripped the design of an existing iPhone app? For a limited time, is for a limited time. You know someone completely screwed up at Apple if the developers had to explain themselves through a price change and iTunes description: Many of you have been contacting us with questions about Apple’s recently announced iBooks for iPad. We have no involvement, but we are proud to have influenced the future user interface of digital reading. iBooks "Similar" Interface Ummm. Apple has worked with iPhone developers in the past for product demos and such things BUT how come Andrew and Phil were ignored? What the hell happened here? Download the app right now. It’s a good ebook reader and though it does not have new/popular titles (thus

Apple Australia has published iPad content to their site, and some keen-eyed observers have noticed what's missing. The list of features explained on the site includes much of what we saw yesterday -- Safari, Mail, YouTube, video ... all but iBooks and the iBookstore. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see a footnote stating that iBooks will be U.S.-only at launch. In the meantime, all iPhone/iPod touch apps will run on the iPad, international uses can grab the Kindle app [Free - iTunes link] (the irony is not lost on us), Classics [Free - iTunes link] or any of the other ereaders in the App Store [iTunes link]. Of course, we're a few months out of launch so things might change. But we're not holding our breath.

Classics Developers Proud To Have Influenced iBooks, App Available For Free For A Limited Time (Updated) (Apple iPhone Apps)

Update: So there is a bit more to this story than once thought. Apparently Delicious Library, a media manager for Mac OS X created by Delicious Monster, was the first known piece of software to use a virtual bookshelf to display content. According to TechCrunch, Wil Shipley, the founder of Delicious Monster, believes Apple borrowed the idea for iBooks without licensing it. This is fairly believable considering some of Delicious Monster’s original employees actually work for Apple. As one of our readers, izdale, has highlighted in the comments section below, the Classics developers have stated their design was inspired by Delicious Library, and they apparently asked for approval before releasing the app. It’s possible that Apple took the design from Delicious Monster, but in the end it’s a difficult argument to make. I mean, where would you put your virtual books? On a virtual bookshelf, right? – During yesterday’s iPad presentation, it

When Apple unveiled their new iBooks application during the launch of the much-anticipated and unfortunately named iPad tablet computer, many people noticed its similarity to the well-known Classics iPhone app. Classics [iTunes link], if you're not familiar with it, is an iPhone app that gives you access to read over a dozen public-domain books. There are lots of ebook readers available for the iPhone, but where Classics sets itself apart is with an exquisite user interface that mimics the feeling of going to a bookshelf, getting a hardcover book, and paging through it. It's likely that the bookshelf metaphor in Classics was inspired by Delicious Library, a Mac app for cataloging books, media, and anything else you want to catalog. But aside from the bookshelf, Classics presents the books on a slightly yellowed, paper-like background, and animates page turns with a satisfying swipe of the finger, and an audible riffling of

I don’t read the printed word any more because I just don’t trust objects that can’t be charged with electricity. However, there is a little something to be said about the feeling of turning a page instead of just scrolling down a stream of uninterrupted text, and so this limited time offer to download the Classics ebook app for free is interesting. Classics features over a dozen literary classics (the devs sometimes add a few more via an app update), and every title features chapters and cover art. I personally still prefer Stanza because of the built-in bookstore and the ability to add most any other book you own, but Classics’ main strength right now is the great page-turning animations. It’s silly, but I sometimes think I’ll get a paper cut from the bloody thing.
iPad your iPhone or iPod touch (QuickPWN)

If you are an iPhone or iPod touch user and you want to make your iDevice look like an iPad, you can easily do that now thanks to RoryPiper. You must first jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, and to do that see our Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 or Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 post. If you don’t have WinterBoard, see our download and install WinterBoard post for instructions. Open Cydia and search for Simple iPad theme, and install it. Open WinterBoard and tap on the Simple iPad theme to activate it, and then exit WinterBoard. The iPad has a new App Store for just eBooks called iBooks, but there is a similar app in the App Store called Classics which is very similar. Click here to download the currently free Classics app for your iPhone or iPod touch.

I generally do not mind paying for an iPhone app, but at the same time I like free apps. And I like free apps even more when they are not normally free. It makes me feel like I am getting a real deal. That said, the iPhone app Classics has (for an unspecified amount of time) been lowered from its regular price of $2.99 to free. Yup, you can head on over to the App Store and download it right now — and pay nothing. We have mentioned Classics here on iPhoneFreak before, but just to offer a recap for those that may have missed it. Classics is an ebook reader, and one that has an super nice interface. It also comes with a selection of, you guessed it, classic book titles. As of now Classics has titles such as Through The Looking Glass, The Art of War, Frankenstein, Dracula, Treasure

MobileMe Gallery, Engadget, TaxCaster, Homerun Battle 3D, Booooly, Readdledocs 2, SoundHound, DropBox, Classics — TiPb Picks of the Week (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Feb 3, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch, and soon… iPad!) related, they’re fair game. Confession: in all the iPad hubbub last week, Rene didn’t get around to posting everyone’s pick. Bright side, you get almost twice as many this week! So who’s on deck this double-dose and what are our picks? Find out after the break! Apple’s new MobileMe Gallery app is awesome. I really like the way it previews photos at the top (just like Apple TV) and you can easily share photos, albums or movies. Adding friend’s galleries are bonus too! I just wish you could comment
