Company: Gameloft S.A. Players: One Price: $7 Compatible: iPod touch, iPhone/3G/3GS, iPhone 4, iPad* Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Friday, July 30, 2010 Category: Games - iPad, iPhone + iPod Released in late 2008, Gameloft's original Hero of Sparta was incredibly ambitious by iPhone standards -- a Nintendo DS- or Sony PSP-quality hack-and-slash adventure game inspired by Sony's God of War series. Not surprisingly, the sequel Hero of Sparta II ($7) kicks almost everything up a notch: most notably, it includes high-resolution artwork that makes good use of the iPhone 4's Retina Display, changes the control scheme to parrot the combo-friendly God of War titles, and provides a better, closer view of the action than before. But as with its predecessor, a few rough edges hold it back from complete gaming nirvana. First is the graphics engine. The good news is that it remains polygon-based, enabling you, your enemies, and the camera to

Hero of Sparta II- app review (The iPhone Blog)

By Chad Garrett, Tuesday, Aug 3, 2010 | Can Gameloft deliver with their sequel to Hero of Sparta? I think the answer is a resounding yes. Though not perfect, Hero of Sparta II (HOS2) delivers pure action and colorful graphics on Apple’s noble iPhone and iPod Touch. HOS2 is an action game spun in the Greek mythological era of the Gods and Goddesses. You play the warrior Argos. I won’t get into his story here, but in this game you are sent on a path of redemption. You return to Earth after spending some buddy time with Hades and immediately the action starts. The controls are different than its predecessor. The main diffidence is that Argos can now jump. This adds a much needed play mechanic to HOS2. In the weapon department, you start off with the basic shield and sword. After every level or so, you start to collect a

'Spider-Man: Total Mayhem' Review – My Spider Sense is… Overpowered (Touch Arcade)

Games based on comic books have been almost as hit or miss as games based on movies in the past, so I think my cautious optimism for Gameloft's recently released Spider-Man: Total Mayhem [$6.99] was well deserved. Sure, there are some absolutely fantastic comic book games such as the quarter-sucking X-Men Arcade Game, and a few others over the years. Unfortunately, many fall in to the same pit that movie games fall in to where they lean far too heavily on whatever intellectual property the game is based on instead of actually having good gameplay. This is true to some extent in Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, but the whole package is comprehensive enough that it doesn't even seem to even matter. Like all Gameloft games, many parts of Spider-Man are clearly borrowed from other titles of theirs, and Total Mayhem is no different. A lot of the combat feels like a mix

Happy Thanksgiving – Here Are a TON of Games on Sale (Touch Arcade)

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and has been all my life. What's there not to love about an entire day revolving around eating massive amounts of turkey, stuffing, and all the other fixings? Sure, I could do without needing to feign interest in football, but thankfully tryptophan overload usually allows me to sleep through all of that. If you're looking for something to do this year while you do your best to either pretend to be interested in football or anxiously wait for the food to be done, there are a ton of sales on the App Store to consider. The basis of this post comes from SirAwesome's awesome thread in our new price drops, freebies, and deals forum. He put together an extremely exhaustive listing of everything that's on sale, and the thread is good to stop by just to make sure you're not missing anything that might

Holiday App Sales Galore (148 Apps)

To celebrate the season a whole bunch of apps are going on sale. Here's the most comprehensive list available for which apps are seeing a discount. Last month our Thanksgiving meals were stuffed with lots of deeply discounted apps, and it seems that publishers are getting into the Christmas spirit in much the same way. We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations, many at their lowest prices ever. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time. Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

Not to be outdone by EA's I ♥ 99¢ Sale, Gameloft wants you to know that they love you too. And what better way is there for them to express this affection towards you than monetarily? From now until February 14th (hint: that's Valentine's Day), Gameloft is offering up 13 select titles for the low price of just 99¢. Take a gander at the discounted titles available: Wait, what's that you say? How silly of Gameloft to put only 13 titles on sale when it would have been oh so perfect to do 14 in honor of February 14th? Well they're way ahead of you, as there actually will be a 14th title available for 99¢. The trick here is that you'll need to go to the Gameloft Facebook page and vote for what title you'd like to see dropped to 99¢. Oh, and iPad owners, don't feel too left out

When I think of Valentine’s Day I think of Cupid prancing around, shooting his arrows into people to help them fall in love, couples planning their days out with brunches, picnics, and an elegant dinner at a 5 star restaurant. I also think of the rest of you poor bastards who say that you’re fine with being single and you prefer your independence rather than reporting in with someone on everything you do, but let’s face it, you just haven’t found the right person yet.
Hero of Sparta II (App Safari)

Hero of Sparta II is the latest app from Gameloft released for the iPhone. If you look back at the history of mobile iOS gaming, you will find a rich catalog of critics and skeptics who all said that a good action game, especially a 3D one, can’t be effectively done on the system. Thankfully, the original Hero of Sparta was one of the first titles to prove those skeptics wrong. The plot is essentially the same as the original title, with similar arena-style fighting mechanics to boot. However, the graphics and content have been improved, but is this enough to make

Macworld | iWorld 2012 - Catching Up with Gameloft (Touch Arcade)

I was able to stop by Gameloft's San Francisco offices while at the conference, and chatted with them about some of their recent releases as well as some of the backlash they've received over them. First was the issue of how they put advertisements into Hero of Sparta II [$4.99], and after an overwhelming amount of negative feedback they decided to take them out. I think it's good when a company goes out on a limb to try something, and then can admit they were wrong about it and make things right in the end. Next we discussed the reception to Dungeon Hunter 3 [Free], which was pretty mixed. The game itself was actually pretty good, but so drastically different from the previous two entries that I think it alienated the established fan base of the series. Had they positioned it as a spinoff rather than a direct sequel, I think

Love is in the Air. Also Gameloft Sales. And More Love. (148 Apps)

By Rob Rich on February 14th, 2012 Gamloft celebrates the most commercially romantic day of the year with some major sales and a Love Declaration Generator. Yes, that's right, a Love Declaration Generator. No doubt there will be plenty of couples out celebrating this Valentine’s Day. Lots of flowers, candy, romantic dinners and candlelight. No one really stops to think about the less glamorous side of the holiday; namely waiting in long lines to get into a restaurant for said romantic dinner, scrambling to find flowers and candy when at least half of the country is doing the same, and so on. Fortunately there’s a way for iOS users to lessen the irritation and have an easier time enjoying the moments that really matter. In this case, I’m referring to Gameloft’s Valentine’s Day sale. Of course rescuing a space princess in Earthworm Jim, wreaking havoc in or running amok in won’t
