Foursquare Who? Gowalla What? MyTown Has 500,000 Users And 31 Million Check-Ins (TechCrunch)

The race to become the hot location-based gaming service is red hot right now. Foursquare and Gowalla dominate the headlines, but another iPhone app, MyTown, has managed to rocket past them in usage in a little over a month with little fanfare. Today, the service has some 500,000 users, co-founder Keith Lee tells us. That puts it far ahead of either of the two more well-covered apps. So how did MyTown manage to do that? There are a few reasons, but the main one may be the background of the creators. Lee along with his co-founders Brian Morrisroe and Sam Christiansen all have extensive experience in the gaming industry. In fact, all three did significant work for Blizzard Entertainment for a number of years, serving in key roles to build the Diablo and World of Warcraft franchises. From there, they decided to take their expertise to form their own company, Booyah

MyTown 2.0 Evolves The Gaming And Monetization Of Location (TechCrunch)

Last week, we wrote about MyTown, an iPhone application created by Booyah already had 500,000 users. That was significant because the app, which is a location-based game, was already well ahead of rivals Foursquare and Gowalla in terms of users — and it gained all those in just one month. Today, brings an entirely new version of the app to the App Store, MyTown 2.0. With this new release, MyTown is further differentiating itself from the Foursquares and Gowallas of the world. While those are about check-ins that revolve around social aspects, MyTown is much more of a straight-up game. In fact, the best way to think about it may be Monopoly for the real world. While the core idea is still to check-in to venues you happen to be at, the driving force behind doing that is to be able to “buy” those properties rather than tell your friends where

MyTown's uncanny success (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Jan 21st 2010 at 10:00PM MyTown is addictive but there is a huge problem to their future business model. You can basically check in anywhere you want at anytime. There is no downtime. Technically, I can be at home, chilling in my bed, and check in 30 locations around the city within a minute. What's the fun and point in that? Yes it is rather repetitive. I started playing it last night after reading this review and now I'm over level 21. I can't put it down. They got something right. There's an aspect of competition to see who can get the most check-in points at each location. But I'm finding that even that isn't too difficult to do. I think the key strategy is to acquire as many establishments as possible and then collect rent on them. Part of what make the game so addicting is in how quickly money

Loopt teams with Mobile Spinach for check-in discounts, Booyah talks about MyTown (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

If the iPhone has a leading app genre, aside from gaming, I'd say the current surge of "check-in" apps is probably it. Sure, back when the App Store first opened up, Twitter apps were everywhere (and they're still being made daily, it seems), but in terms of a genre that can only exist on a location-aware device like the iPhone, "check-in" apps like Foursquare, Gowalla, and so on, are making their mark right now. Here's news on two such apps continuing to grow on the App Store skyline. First up, Loopt [iTunes link] has announced a partnership with a company called Mobile Spinach to start trying to monetize this kind of app usage. Mobile Spinach delivers local ads, and Loopt says that it'll be using their location-based social networking service to bring specials and deals to users from wherever they check-in from. Note that while Apple doesn't necessarily want location-based advertising

Favorite Apps of the Month (iPhone Download Blog)

These are actually my favorite apps of February but I’m a little late… [iTunes link] – This is a free app that lets you download a host of files to your iPhone like JPG, GIF, HTML, MP3, MP4, 3GP and more. But, what I like to use it for is downloading YouTube videos for later viewing at full resolution. However, you can only watch the video from within the app and there’s no way to get the video off your iPhone. Obviously, Apple wouldn’t have an app that would pirate YouTube videos. Since YouTube videos don’t stream on 3G at full resolution on the iPhone, this helps to watch your videos more cleanly. There doesn’t seem to be a size limit when downloading on 3G. Which location-based app has more than double the amount of users of Foursquare and Gowalla combined and is free? If the answer is [iTunes link] you’d

In fact, the service has crossed 1.5 million users. And it’s gaining them at an incredible rate of 130,000 new users a week. Compare this to Foursquare, which during SXSW crossed 600,000 total users. And MyTown is showing no signs of slowing down, with another new version of the app now available. MyTown 3.0 comes just two months after the launch of MyTown 2.0.

Fans of Booyah’s MyTown iPhone app have much to be excited today as an update was just rolled out today on the App Store. MyTown 3.1 allows users to scroll through trending properties in their area, as well as their most frequented check-ins and their friends. You will also be able to further customize your properties via add-ons that will give users a chance to make their town a little more unique. MyTown 3.1 also introduces a check-in limit which, for the first time in MyTown, puts a limit on the amount of times a user can check-in within a certain time period. As of now, the only other location based service app that limits check-ins is the Yelp! app as Foursquare still does not limit a user’s check-in time.. Daniel is a Jersey boy, born and raised. He currently lives in the Northern NJ area, close to New York City.

May 6th 2010 at 9:00AM email me at myfriendizzie@gmail.com to find out how to out smart the limit of check-ins. What an incredible big pile of dog poo Booyah released, and then stepped in themselves. This upgrade has taken away all possibility for "fun" and replaced it with boredom. I'll be sitting back for a week or two and watching to see if they decide to bring back some sense of "game". For the moment, it's just rote dullness that awaits anyone who goes to MyTown. Very sad indeed. I play mytown, and yes the new update is absolutely horrible. The main offender here is that they have now limited check-ins to 40 per day. Seriously! There are so many reasons why this is stupid, but mainly it just makes the game a lot less fun. Especially since you can only play it for about 20 minutes before having basically nothing

By Staff, Friday, Jun 4, 2010 | Sure, new and notable iPhone and iPad apps isn’t a theme, but with so many new and such a large swathe of notable, who needs a theme? Join us after the break to see what’s going on in the iTunes App Store this week! Documents to Go, one of the leading mobile office document creation and editing tools, has gone universal binary which means, for no extra charge, you can now use it not only on the iPhone but on the big iPad screen as well. It includes the same great Excel, Word, and PowerPoint compatibility, but it higher resolution on the iPad, and supports iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad features like inter-app document sharing and iTunes document transfer (which the iPhone should get in iPhone OS 4). They’ve also added support for SugarSync and iDisk, rounding out DropBox, Box.net, and Google Docs as

Booyah has released MyTown 4.0 for the iPhone, the latest update to their extremely popular check-in game, and it adds a whole new round of social functions to the system. Properties that you own (which you get by checking-in at real-life properties) can now create items of their own, and different categories, like shopping or dining, will create different types of items. Additionally, items can now be traded with friends in the game, and all of this adds a new level to the gameplay -- not only are you earning points for checking-in, but you're collecting items, and those items can give you extra boosts or otherwise mix up the game. Plus, actual virtual items helps out Booyah's in-app sales, and I'm sure they will eventually put some of their branding agreements to work by making some of those created items brand-name products. Version 4.0 also adds "location tips," which allow

The App Store is a busy place -- there are lots and lots of apps out there, and almost all of them need attention. Some developers are apparently willing to pay for that attention, so enter Apperang, a new service that purports to pay users to install certain apps on their iPhones. MobileCrunch has the breakdown -- Apperang has a verification system running that will check if you've installed apps in their system (including Booyah's MyTown and Flixter's Movies -- I saw nine apps on the service, but that may be limited by location), and then will pay out a few cents, both for installing the app yourself, as well as referring it to other Apperang users. Is it kosher? Pretty much -- lots of app developers already pay for advertising that's targeted towards app installation, and this deal isn't any different. Rather than pocketing all the profit, Apperang is just

MyTown Lets you Check in to Products with Barcode Scanning (IntoMobile)

Following up on its craft and trade update last month, the location-based check-in game for iPhone, MyTown, has just become a little more interesting. Instead of just checking-in to real-world businesses and claiming them as your own in an online game of Monopoly, you can now use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and check in to products. Doing so unlocks exclusive virtual items, and of course earns you in-game points. The main target for this update are the producers of the products getting scanned; by getting involved with MyTown, they can offer specials and rewards through the game as incentives for players to buy their stuff. Very clever. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the new check-in craze spread away from simply locations. GetGlue offers a check-in app for iPhone that focuses on movies, books, music, and TV shows, and Gowalla expanded their location-based network to include events. It’ll

MyTown adds product check-ins (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Booyah's very popular MyTown app has updated again, this time bringing some more innovation to the "check-in" idea. Instead of just checking in to locations, the app will now "check-in" to various products with the iPhone's camera. So when you use a certain product, you can use the camera to scan a barcode, and presumably, MyTown will recognize it, add it to your check-in history, and then reward points and progress as usual. Of course, this also means that Booyah will get a list of your favorite products and merchandise, which CEO Keith Lee says is "a holy grail for marketers and brands" in the press release. It seems a little unfair to take such valuable information from consumers while simply rewarding them with a few achievement points and virtual stickers, but MyTown definitely has a following, and the app's fans can't seem to get enough of their virtual collecting.
MyTown Now Available in Canada, the UK, and Australia (IntoMobile)

Booyah’s location-based check-in game, MyTown, is now available in Australian, UK, and Canadian iTunes stores. Woo! This is one I’ve actually been waiting for for awhile. Basically, it adds a thick slather of game elements on top of the usual location-based check-ins you might be familiar with in Foursquare and Gowalla. Essentially, it turns that same “go to a store, check in, get points” scheme into a game of Monopoly, that has you “owning” the businesses you check into, and charging rent to other people who check in there. MyTown also differs in that it lists stores specifically, while Foursquare and Gowalla are more loose, and offer a whole variety of user-generated content. Conveniently enough, Booyah also launched a scavenger hunt today too. Basically, you check in to locations as much as possible to earn parts of a map, that will lead you to a hidden key somewhere in your city.
