You can reach him at jkincaidtc@gmail.com (he has other addresses too, so don’t worry if you have a different one). → Learn More PayPal has just launched an upgraded iPhone application that adds new features and includes a facelift that’s meant to help instill a greater sense of security. And it also brings with it big news for Bump Technologies, the startup that lets you exchange information simply by tapping smartphones together: Bump is now prominently featured in the PayPal iPhone application as a quick way to initiate transactions. You can download the free app here.
PayPal v2.0 Update Adds Loads Of Features And A New Look (Apple iPhone Apps)

Before today the PayPal iPhone app was a complete yawn-fest not really worthy of a place on your springboard unless you were the kind of person who absolutely needed to send money while on-the-go because that’s basically all it could do, that and view your current balance and history. The recently released v2.0 however, gives the app some actually worthwhile features while also sprucing it up with a brand new interface. PayPal iPhone app users will no doubt welcome the new look and feel in v2.0, sporting a more colorful and rich interface, but really it’s all about the features. The app now sports the somewhat gimmicky, although fun, Bump feature, allowing you to bump two devices together to quickly and easily transfer money. PayPal v2.0 allows you to do a lot more with your money as well, giving you the ability to withdraw funds from your PayPal balance into your

The PayPal app for the iPhone has just received what seems to be a nice overall update. To begin with, the app is now at version 2.0 and with that comes new features as well as a new look. And as a current (and frequent) PayPal app user I can say that the new look is much improved. Anyway, aside from the new design the app also received some new features. The biggest new feature, albeit one that I can not see myself using is the integration with Bump. For those unfamiliar, the Bump app allows you to “bump” things like contact information from iPhone to iPhone. Well, now you can bump some money to someone. Like I said, neat, but not for me. Other new features include the ability to withdraw money, split the check, collect money, set reminders and also refer the app to a friend.

PayPal Transfers Made Simple: Just Bump iPhones (Mashable)

by The newly released 2.0 version of PayPal’s iPhone app [iTunes link] can transfer money to another iPhone when you bump the two handsets together. Don’t worry, though; you probably won’t do it by accident. PayPal licensed the tech developed by Bump Technologies, which also powers that iPhone app that friends people on Facebook when you shake your phone. With this app, you can either enter the e-mail address of your friend’s account or bump your phones together to download the necessary info. Then you enter the amount and send. Your friend can also request money by bumping his or her phone against yours. Other new features in PayPal’s updated app include a tip calculator, the ability to transfer money from your PayPal account to your bank account and the option to request money from contacts bill or invoice-style. The app is available now, and it’s free.

2010 is shaping up to be the year that your iPhone becomes your wallet. Square (from Twitter founder Jack Dorsey) is entering public beta, and card-swipe giant VeriFone as well as upstart Mophie have products coming out that let you use your iPhone to make credit card transactions. Now, the grtandaddy of all online payment systems, PayPal, has come out with an update to its free app. Taking things to the next level, PayPal 2.0 uses the Bump API to let users exchange cash by bumping phones, just like swapping contact details and Facebook profiles. The absence of a dongle makes this app much more attractive than the competitors, but don't rush to declare this "the end of cash:" you still have to cough up a fee for every PayPal transaction. PayPal's new app adds other features - such as tools to help you split restaurant bills, calculate tax and tip

PayPal 2.0: Send cash by bumping iPhones (CNET iPhone Atlas)

Do the bump! Just knock iPhones (gently) to swap cash with someone. PayPal has come full circle. What started as a PalmPilot app that let users wirelessly exchange money has evolved into an iPhone app that lets users wirelessly exchange money. However, whereas Palm users relied on IR "beaming" to shoot funds back and forth, iPhone owners can simply "bump" their phones: The new PayPal 2.0 incorporates the same accelerometer-driven activator as the popular Bump app. In other words, money can change hands just by knocking them together. What's the point of that? Well, say you owe your buddy $35.17--half of last night's bar tab, for instance. Instead of finding an ATM, taking out cash, and hoping your pal can make change, just "bump" the exact amount to him via PayPal. In about five seconds, the transaction is done. Of course, PayPal for iPhone suffers from the same limitation as PayPal

by Victor Agreda, Jr. on March 19, 2010 at 03:28 PM PayPal had a nice booth at SXSW and was there to promote their API and developer platform, which now allows developers (hint: mobile developers, prayers answered) to enable PayPal's e-commerce solution within their apps. They were also there promoting their new iPhone app, which allows you to manage your PayPal account and send money to merchants or friends. Here's my chat with Francesco Rovetta, Director of PayPal Mobile.

Fist-Bump Money Transfers? PayPal App Update Makes It So. (148 Apps)

PayPal adds a new feature to its free app: fist-bump money transfers! Do you remember the billionth app downloaded on the App Store? It was Bump, a free app that lets you swap pictures and contact info by bumping two iPhones together. The concept was simple, the app was cheap, and lo and behold: people like gimmicks. For a while, Bump was a chart-topper. PayPal has long had a free app on the App Store, which provided mundane features like managing your PayPal account. (Who needs that?) But recently, they added a new feature: just like Bump, PayPal’s app now allows you to exchange things by simply bumping phones. The difference is that PayPal lets you actually exchange money with the person you’re bumping phones with. It looks like a gimmick on the surface, but the feature is actually pretty useful. If you’re using an iPhone and have a PayPal account,

The first iteration of the Paypal application for the iPhone was slow and didn't include many useful features. A user could send money to others easily but anything else just wasn't offered and the app didn't really bring a great mobile experience to the iPhone. The newest version of the app is attempting to change all of that and brings a great amount of features and speed improvements to the platform. This new app features a complete redesign and it definitely shows that much more thought has been used Users now not only can send payments to other people, they can also request funds, withdraw money, and much more. The app includes many of the features that would be expected for mobile PayPal management. One unique feature that has been added to the list is Bump. This technology was first debuted as a standalone application but has now been released as

by PayPal Mobile 2.0 [iTunes link] appeared in the App Store on March 15 with an array of new features, including the ability to “bump” money to friends. PayPal worked with the developers from Bump Technologies, the company that makes the Bump iPhone app, to make the process of sending money faster and more fun. PayPal Mobile 2.0 for iPhone is just part of PayPal’s growing focus on mobile technologies. Last November, PayPal launched the PayPal X Developer Network to help developers integrate the company’s backend technology with mobile and web applications. Some of the early fruits of the program were on display at DEMO last month, with the announcement of the first winners of the PayPal X Developer Challenge. In addition to the new iPhone app for consumers, PayPal also has an iPhone software development kit (SDK) in private beta, which allows developers to plug into the PayPal ecosystem with

We’re still keeping our eye out for great iOS 4 apps that take advantage of the new APIs and features available to developers under iOS4. We’ve found a couple more good ones to share with you guys, and as always, if you see any good ones, drop ‘em in the comments so we can check them out too! Even though Foursquare has already received a general update for iOS4, it seems they’re still adding new features. Along with several needed bug fixes, they’ve added support for in-app sms and e-mail as well as more support for iPhone 4 retina display. I was pretty disappointed in Foursquare for quite a while as far as the GPS refreshing and multitasking but it appears this version fixed most of my complaints. It’s nice to see they’re taking an active role in improving the overall user experience. I took a look at this app about

PayPal Mobile for iPhone 2.5 adds donations (IntoMobile)

PayPal has submitted its latest iPhone app to Apple for the AppStore approval process. Version 2.5 prides itself with the donation feature, allowing users to quickly donate to more than 23,000 charities in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, including American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks, Save the Children, UNICEF, BBC Children in Need, Cancer Research UK, Canadian Red Cross and more. PayPal has teamed with MissionFish and Artez to make this happen. The idea is noble – to simplify the donation process and help charities reach more donors. Mobile donations are increasingly getting traction and PayPal wants to take advantage of the trend (while at the same time doing the right thing). Bill Gates said that the barrier to giving is not too little caring, it’s that giving is too complex. With this new release, PayPal hopes we are a step closer to solving that barrier… As I said at the beginning

PayPal for iPhone Now Scans and Deposits Checks by Camera (IntoMobile)

Last week, we had heard that the PayPal app for iPhone would be able to take pictures of checks and deposit them into your account; today, the new feature has been released, and is ripe for the picking in the App Store. The one snag is that it takes 15 days for the check to clear, which might be longer than what it would normally take for you to just swing by the bank, depending on your situation. On the plus side, there are no fees for using the service, just snap a pic and wait. On top of support for Bump and donations, the app is coming along really nicely. If you’d rather be putting your checks into your own bank account rather than PayPal, the company that powered the new iPhone app feature have their own standalone product called DepositNow, which they’re pitching to banks. Maybe TD, Northwest, Citi,

PayPal's iPhone app now scans your checks (CNET iPhone Atlas)

PayPal's check-cashing interface on the iPhone There may be no jet packs yet, but we are very much living in the future. Proof enough of that is PayPal's latest addition to its iPhone app, which brings with it the capability to snap a photo of a check and have it be deposited to your PayPal account free of charge. Sure, this is something that customers of Chase and USAA have been able to do with each company's respective iPhone applications for months now, but this is PayPal. Why is that important? It means if you've connected your PayPal account to another bank that does not offer such a feature, you can use PayPal as the go-between. Of course PayPal has limits of how much you can transfer from your account each month, but you can have that lifted if you do things like confirm your Social Security number and debit card.

There are some 225,000 mobile applications for the iPhone now and 70,000 for Android, so every so often we like to highlight a few that have caught our attention. This latest edition of our favorite smartphone apps includes a few in testing, a few we're madly in love with, some notable updates and some you may not have even heard of yet. Instagram (iPhone): OK, we're dubbing this one the "app of the month." Initially called Burbn, the original app was transformed into Instagram, a photo-sharing service and image editor. With a number of built-in filters, you can turn your iPhone photos into more attractive and interesting versions of themselves, then share them either publicly or privately with fellow app users. Your friends' photos are in a section called "Feed" and the most popular photos from across Instagram are found in the "Popular" section. While what Instagram is doing is not

PayPal has launched version 3 of its iPhone application. The most important changes in it are support for push notifications and a search engine for local merchants. You can set up push notifications to happen whenever you send or receive money, purchase something through PayPal, or receive a request for money. Push notifications will not work on jailbroken devices or if your iPod touch is in sleep mode. PayPal Local functionality is now included in the app, but is still in beta -- and therefore may not always work. This allows you to see all nearby businesses that accept PayPal or Bling. You can narrow your search by distance or business type. Other nice features have also made it into PayPal for iPhone 3. You can now sign up for PayPal from within the app and control the length of time you remain logged in to the app. A new help

The mobile payment space has been heating up lately, with some big-time names like Bank of America and Visa partnering up to test out mobile payments. The big problem with most of these solutions, however, comes down to hardware requirements and compatibility. Last week, however, PayPal updated its iPhone app with a "PayPal Local" feature that allows users to find stores that accept payment via PayPal. Mobile payments is a space we've been keeping an eye on here and late last summer, Sarah Perez took a look at the ongoing battle between Near Field Communications, other hardware solutions, and apps. With PayPal Local, the company is hedging its bets and covering both the software and hardware sides of the battle. Already, a partnership with Bling Nation covers the hardware end by fostering NFC with an NFC-enabled sticker that can be stuck on the back of a phone. The beauty of a

You'd think by now we'd all be wary of open WiFi networks, and luckily that's the only way this could affect you, but if you use the PayPal app on an open network the Wall Street Journal is reporting a hacker could potentially nab your user account. According to the story, the app doesn't verify your security certificate (which is kind of the point of the certificate, no?) and goes along its merry way, transmitting your data to PayPal in a way that a fortuitous ne'er do well could intercept. Still, as the WSJ points out, a hacker would have to be poised and ready to take advantage of this exploit. I doubt you're sitting around in that app for hours while sipping your latte at Starbucks, right? The app in the store shows the last update was October 26, but the WSJ reports a fixed version has been sent to

Danske Bank's official app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices. Once installed, users simply launch the app, snap a photo of the bill they wish to pay and press a confirmation button. The app uses the photograph to rapidly enter the details for a bill or electronic funds transfer, for example the amount due, payee name and account numbers, without forcing users to key in the information by hand. It's a welcome new feature for those of us with fat finger syndrome. The updated app is the latest from the banking industry to find innovative uses for the cameras found in mobile devices.
For those of you who rely on PayPal, especially on the iPhone, you’ll be glad to know that the mobile app for the iOS smartphone has been updated. PayPal has been listening to customer feedback, and brings the following updates to the mobile app: Perhaps the biggest thing for PayPal for iPhone users is the ability to check history. I know that when I’m checking any accounts online or on my phone, I want to see what’s going on and where money came from, and where it went. Mobile commerce is an exponentially growing business, and staying relevant and keeping mobile apps updated, like PayPal just did for the iPhone, is a good way to keep happy and satisfied with the service.
