PCalc 1.6 Now Live in App Store — As iPhone 3.0 “Universal Binary”? (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Monday, Jun 15, 2009 | PCalc developer James Thomson is one of our favorites because he not only makes great apps, but he seems to love doing it, and always figures out new, positive, and productive ways to get our attention. This time around it isn’t just the release of an iPhone 3.0 compatible version of PCalc for iPhone ($9.99 – iTunes link) that includes support for copy and paste (and a couple of new vertical button layouts, one for engineers, one for programmers), it’s how he built one version of the app that supports both iPhone 2.2.1 and iPhone 3.0 at the same time. An iPhone version of Apple’s “universal binary” concept, as it were. We’re not sure he’s the first to do this — and according to Twitter he isn’t either — but we hope he does write up the process when the 3.0 SDK NDA

Clever iPhone app prevents calculator pR0n (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

A tweet earlier today pointed me to an iPhone calculator app that really got me laughing, as well as taking me on a trip down memory lane. When I was in high school, calculators were expensive (US$200 for a six-function calculator with memory, for example) and just starting to make it into the hands of students. In those more naive times, anything that could be construed as even mildly suggestive got a lot of chuckles. One of the more amusing pastimes was to perform certain calculations that would come up with a result like 5318008 or 3104558 which, when the calculator was turned upside down, would spell a "dirty word." Well, TLA Systems wants to make sure that its PCalc RPN [iTunes Link, US$9.99] and free PCalc Lite [iTunes Link] calculator apps for iPhone are used only for good purposes, so they've built in a special smut filter that will block

iPhone Calculator App Gets Self-Censored (Apple iPhone Apps)

TLA Systems, the developers of PCalc RPN Calculator for the iPhone and iPod touch, have decided to take a tongue-in-cheek approach to Apple’s mostly controversial app approval process to gain a little publicity for their most recent update, and it seems to have worked perfectly. TLA Systems recently updated their feature-rich calculator app PCalc RPN Calculator to v1.8. The update adds tons of new features and now includes a money saving coupon for the desktop version of the software. That’s all fine and dandy, but this is simply a calculator app, a niche market, so the developers chose to promote it in an amusing way while also allowing us to remember how lowbrow humor went a long way back in the day. Remember when you used calculators for non-mathematical purposes? C’mon, you know, like when you inputted numbers in a specific order and flipped the calculator upside down to create words.

MobileMe iDisk, PCalc and PCalc Lite, I Am T-Pain — Quick App Updates! (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Dec 16, 2009 | Some quick App Store updates this week, including Mobile iDisk 1.1, PCalc and Pcalc Lite 1.9, I Am T-Pain 1.2, and Canabalt 1.2. (Not that the iTunes App Store is letting me download some of them!) MobileMe iDisk 1.1 [Free - iTunes link] brings autocomplete for email, saves file sharing emails to your sent folder, allows tap-hold to copy or save to camera roll, cache is now embiggened to 500MB, plus faster downloads and more languages supported (Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish) PCalc 1.9 [$9.99 - iTunes link] adds more themes and what-not, but the real news is PCalc Lite 1.9 [Free - iTunes link] which lets you get the basic calc functionality free, and then use in-app-purchase to buy only those features you need, only when you need them. This includes a theme pack ($0.99)

PCalc [$9.99 - iTunes link] is a great RPN Calculator for the iPhone but now developer James Thomson is curious as to what users would like to see in an iPad version. How curious? He’s made a cardboard version to play around with (above) and is offering TiPb readers ten (10) free copies of PCalc to tell him what you think! Give-away starts now and ends Monday at 12pm, PT. Promo codes require a US App Store account (Apple’s rule, not ours).

No stocks, weather, voice memos, clock, calculator, or compass on iPad? App Store to the rescue! (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Apr 2, 2010 | Unlike the iPhone 3GS, the iPad doesn’t have built-in stocks, weather, voice memo, clock, calculator, or compass apps. It does, however, have the brand new iPad App Store, and yeah… there are apps for all that! Check out our picks after the break! Bloomberg for iPad [Free - iTunes link] offers not just stocks but news, company info, price charts, trends, analysis and… you get the idea. It could just be information overload on a 9.7″ screen, but that’s likely just what you stockies want! Weather Channel Max [Free - iTunes link] costs nothing (thanks to Toyota) but packs in the weathery-goodness. Full screen, customizable maps, in-motion radar, local, regional, and national video, and more make it not so much of a replacement as a escalation. Voice memos for iPad [Free - iTunes link] is the “I can’t believe it’s not butter” of

Quick Review: PCalc for iPad (The iPhone Blog)

By Leanna Lofte, Friday, Apr 16, 2010 | PCalc [$9.99 - iTunes link] is one of the leading calculators for iPhone and now its computing power has been updated (as in universal binary) to include support for iPad. PCalc is an (optional) RPN calculator that is great for scientists, engineers, programmers, and students. It includes a list of common constants, an ample amount of conversions, a paper tape that can be shared via email, and support for binary, hexadecimal, and octal calculations. You can also customize the look of PCalc with different themes and digit fonts. The interface on iPad is rather beautiful in both landscape and portrait. The buttons are nice and big and everything is easy to read. Navigation between the menus is a much more pleasant experience than on the iPhone. To see PCalc in action, watch the video after the break!

PCalc, one of our favorite iPhone and iPad calculator apps (see Leanna’s PCalc review), has just hit version 2.3, and in celebration the developer has very kindly offered us a bunch of promo codes to give away. To you. But first things first: This free update has many improvements, but the key one is taking advantage of the additional screen space on the iPad. You can now permanently show the paper tape, RPN stack, and memories onscreen in a new sidebar area. This was the number one requested feature from iPad users, and we’re happy to be able to add it now. The tape, stack, and memories have had a complete overhaul for the iPhone and iPod touch too, and are now easier to read across all devices, appropriately themed, and with enhanced email support. PCalc is distributed as a universal app – one purchase will work on iPad, iPhone, and
