Apple Hits 1 Billion App Store Downloads! (IntoMobile)

Apple was expected to serve up their 1 Billionth (with a capital B) App Store download today, and lo and behold, Apple has announced that they’ve officially seen 1 billion iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded from their iTunes App Store! In less than a full year of existence, Apple and the iPhone have managed to make mobile applications as commonplace as an iTunes music purchase, and the App Store’s popularity continues to grow. The total tally of iPhone applications in the iPhone AppStore was estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 in March 2009. And, with thousands more iPhone applications hitting the AppStore on a monthly basis, Apple’s success with their integrated mobile application delivery model will likely continue. No wonder everyone and their grandmother are trying to launch mobile application stores of their own. For the record, it took Apple six whole months to reach the 500-million milestone.
After fifteen consecutive weekly updates, the immensely popular iPhone app Pocket God, which took only one week to create, has shifted into new territory providing the bite size pygmy islanders with a brand new home in Episode 15. The new island environment has been something faithful followers of the game have been pushing for since the app launched back in early January. The latest game play sets the pygmies up on a new island complete with an old fashioned outhouse featuring farting sounds. Extended waiting for the turd closet causes an implosion too dumb for words. But that's the kind of humor that makes Pocket God such a hoot. Users are now given the opportunity to name each pygmy and to follow their personal stats, two upgrades included in Episode 14 that fans of game have been anxiously awaiting. Switching back to the original island and torture traps is also

Pocket God Accused of Being "Totally Degrading" (iPhone Savior)

The wildly popular iPhone app Pocket God, a game that encourages humorous torture of cartoon islanders has come under attack by Elaine Howard from the international Pacific Women's Information Network who has forwarded a complaint on to developers Bolt Creative stating the game is an "arrogant slap in the face to our people". What she means by 'our people' is specifically Pacific islanders. But US creators Bolt Creative argue the game does not depict any particular nationality. "How do you think people would react if you created a game where you were God and you could create and kill as many Mexicans as you wanted? Or Asians?" wrote Howard, who lives in the US. In Pocket God, the user takes on the role of an "all-powerful god ruling over a miniature tribe of primitive islanders". This $.99-cent juggernaut which has sold over 850 units since it's launch on January 9, 2009

If you are an iPhone owner who hasn’t heard of Pocket God by now, it is about time you check it out. The game has been at or near the top of the top paid applications list at the App Store basically ever since it has been released. Being in the limelight definitely has its perks, but as always, it also has its drawbacks. According to Pocket Gamer via Brisbane Times, Pocket God is now being labeled as racist game by some groups. Pocket God allows you to be “God” to a group of islanders. You are able to manipulate nearly every aspect of the island, including the villagers themselves in a variety of ways. You can feed them coconuts, strike them with lighting, or even feed them to the sharks. It is this behavior along with the depictions of the islanders that has some people all fired up.
Sometime during yesterday evening, the second large update to Pocket God was released, bringing us one step closer to the popular games new price of $1.99 instead of the usual $.99. Developer Bolt Creative has decided to try and take Pocket God to a whole new level by introducing much more intriguing elements to the lives of the islanders. They announced that a new trilogy of updates would be the first step in doing just that, and once the trilogy was over, the price would be raised to $1.99 to counter the amount of work they are putting into the game. The first two updates of the trilogy have now been released, leaving only about one more week for you to pick the game up at $.99. Of course, all updates are free for anyone who already owns the game.
App Review: Pocket God (All About iPhone)

Having a set of minions to dominate and control has been a staple in gameplay since kids first got pets, dolls and younger siblings to knock around. Indeed, the Sims has become probably the most lucrative video game in the world by expanding on this simple premise until it burst. The iPhone is an excellent platform for this type of game. It provides the user with a touch screen to manipulate their subjects in a pocketable device that allows users to indulge in a spot of torture whenever they have a few minutes to spare. Pocket God from Bolt Creative gives you a couple of tropical islands to paddle around in and half a dozen or so villagers to torment with your godly powers. It’s just a shame the developers forget to include a rather vital component. First impressionsThe first thing to strike you about Pocket God are the graphics. These

Lima Sky has been making ongoing updates to their excellent Doodle Jump [App Store] game. We first took a look at the game back in March. The game builds where PapiJump left off and the result is a simple but remarkably addictive game. Since our initial coverage, Lima Sky has added a number of features including: direction shooting, facebook friends leaderboard, monster sound warning and two new monsters. In the latest 1.2.1 update, the company even added a cross-over easter egg that should please fans. Lima Sky's Igor Pusenjak also reports that they have more surprises in store for this game as well as in Bolt Creative's Pocket God. Pocket God is, of course, the massively popular entertainment app that we looked at in April. Bolt Creative has been churning out ongoing updates and are up to the 17th episode/version of Pocket God.
Pocket God Update, Episode 18: Surf’s Up (148 Apps)

By Kevin Stout on June 2nd, 2009 Not quite the surfing mini-game I asked for in my review, but still pretty cool. The spear gun is incredibly violent, it's perfect! Pocket God’s developers, Bolt Creative, came out with an update again sometime yesterday, staying close to their update a week average. This week was the ability to create a huge tsunami to sink the island. You simply swipe your finger over the ocean a few times (exactly how you would swipe your finger over the clouds to change the weather) and the huge wave comes and wipes out the village. But that isn’t all. This takes you to an underwater area where your Oogs are still living, but holding their breath. In the bottom left corner is a statue of some kind of creature with it’s mouth open and a spear sticking out. This turned out to be a spear gun.

I absolutely love video games. There, I said it. Most of my time these days is spent writing about all kinds of unique iPhone apps, including games, so I rarely find the time anymore to sit down for long periods of time to play my favorite titles on my Xbox 360 or my Nintendo Wii, and that’s where my iPhone comes in handy. I have been able to find moments throughout the day to get a little Harbor Master in here, a little Puzzle Quest in there, and sometimes I sit down for a good amount of time and play more in-depth games like Real Racing. I believe the iPhone needs more games like Real Racing. Games that can offer deep, immersive gameplay, but can also give you that quick moment of gaming bliss, games like Vogster Entertainment’s Robocalypse – Mobile Mayhem.
Grazie Woz e Ave12D

Pocket God Takes It To The Skies: Ooga Jump Episode. OUT! (The App Era)

July 24th, 2009 James Isabel Bolt Creative, the masterminds behind Pocket God, has finally graced us with another installment of their weekly updates. This week’s feature of choice? Pocket God’s arguably first mini game with Ooga Jump! Grand Switcheroo! Remember when Doodle Jump borrowed some Pocket God images for one of its updates. Well I think it’s payback time now that Pocket God technically drew this update’s inspiration from Doodle Jump. Activating Ooga Jump From either the original or dinosaur island, lift any of your pygmies up to the blue skies. You’ll then see one layer of clouds. Let go and let the pygmy bounce off the cloud, from here the game starts. Ooga jump is accelerometer controlled by the way. Once bouncing, you can’t employ any other feature. The goal is to reach the highest you can of course. Power Ups And Enemies As with any game in this genre,

Nothing like coming home to a ton of updates! Check for updates in iTunes if you haven't already, it seems like Apple pushed a massive amount of updates to the App Store this evening including four substantial updates for games we have covered in the past: Harbor Master, 99¢ - New level "Smugglers' Reef" added. Players will need to unload differently colored cargo at two different ports before sending ships off screen. Also included is Twitter integration to brag about your scores. Pocket God, 99¢ - New Doodle Jump-like mini game. Carry an islander up to one of the clouds, bounce them off of it, and see how much higher you can jump. I Dig It, 99¢ - Three new challenges added as well as the ability to finally buy a 1up from the in-game store, giving a little bit more flexibility than the permanent death in the previous version. GloBall,

The anticipation thread for Chillingo's Minigore [App Store] started all the way back on May 15th. 3,546 posts later, Minigore is finally here! Minigore is a dual-stick survival shooter similar to iDracula [App Store]. Two on-screen joysticks control the game, the right controls where you shoot and the left handles your movement. You only get one life and can get hit twice before you die. The game also comes with two levels of difficulty. Your arsenal to dispatch the swarms of furries consists of your standard machine gun, a shotgun that you can pick up from a crate, and an exploding crate to inflict area effect damage. There are four types of enemies in game, three different sizes of furries and a flaming furry that runs a little faster. The standard furries come in three sizes. When you shoot a large furry it will split in to smaller furries, and once

Hundreds of iPhone developers are sitting on the sidelines quietly cheering the FFC's decision to start asking both Apple and AT&T some very relating to the company's rejection this past week of the wildly anticipated Google Voice app for iPhone. Affectionately called "the one number to ring them all", it provides iPhone users with dirt-cheap international calls, free conference calling and free voice mail transcriptions. David Pogue best described Google Voice in his New York Times review;“If Google search revolutionized the Web, and Gmail revolutionized free e-mail, then one thing’s for sure: Google Voice, unveiled Thursday, will revolutionize telephones.” - David Pogue NYT Not only did Apple hammer Google Voice into salt, they quickly removed all related (and previously approved) third-party applications from the App Store without any notice to developers. This kind of action by the company has not been uncommon, creating controversy at every turn during it's short one

Pocket God has always been known for its unique and frequent updates. Episode 22 contained another casual game tie-in, which allowed you to bounce your pygmies on clouds just as you would in Doodle Jump. Now Pocket God has been given the Harbor Master treatment. Pocket God Episode 23: Bait Master allows you to feed your pygmies to piranhas. For those of you who enjoy discovering these mini-games on your own, I must warn you to look away immediately because I am about to spoil your fun.
One of the most popular iPhone games, Pocket God, has been recently updated with brand new features. Episode 25 rocks Austin Powers-style “Sharks With Frickin’ Laserbeams Attached to Their Heads,” which is hilarious. This means that you will be able to replace the Bait Master Anchor with the new Chum Bucket, scattering shark bait around the sea, or handing it to a doomed pygmy. In addition, once sharks appear, you can aim lasers using accelerometer control! As for the other part of the story, which talks about future game development, we’ve heard that the episode 26 will introduce zombie pygmies. You will be able to take a pygmy and bury him alive, only to see him returning later as a brain-eating zombie… All in all, if you still haven’t, you should join all the people who already grabbed Pocket God. WRONG! Think again. What We Got? Zombies How To’s To make the first zombie. Tap on the grave twice, dump a pygmy in, tap soil back in, VOILAH.
Latest 'Pocket God' Update Includes Customization DLC (Touch Arcade)

Bolt Creative's Pocket God [App Store] has had a seemingly permanent spot on the top lists of both overall paid apps and paid games since its release nearly a year ago. As a pioneer of episodic content updates, the "Good Will Haunting" update marks the 26th addition to the original game. The free "Good Will Haunting" update introduces the Pygmy Ghost: This update also marks the beginning of a new era of in-app customization via optional downloadable content (DLC) packs. For 99¢ in the latest update you can customize the look of the T-Rex on the island with various skins, hats, and even tattoos. Developer Dave Castelnuovo hopes to ideally include one additional DLC pack alongside each free update to the app, provided it doesn't slow down the release of said update. The reason to include these optional paid upgrades is, of course, to fund future development of Pocket God, but as

Apps Put On Their Halloween Costumes Via Updates (Apple iPhone Apps)

Many app developers are trying to take advantage of the spookiest holiday of the year by updating their apps with Halloween related content. Since there is no possible way to cover each and every one of them, we have decided to bring you a collection of some of the more high profile games that have been updated with Halloween content all within this one post. Pocket God, one of the most updated apps in the entire App Store, received an update yesterday that added the Barking Spider. You can call upon the Barking Spider by dropping one of your innocent little pygmies into the spider web and tapping until it is entirely cocooned, and if you tap even more and the cocoon will explode releasing baby spiders. You are then able to battle the Barking Spider by tossing a spear at it. The update also adds a Halloween Skin Pack via

Today we ‘re continuing our new series here on Just Another iPhone Blog “ called ‘Desert Island Apps ‘. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music. What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island. I ‘m very happy to have Marcus Hobbs -creator of one of my all-time favorite iPhone apps, SmackTalk

Review: Pocket Devil vs. Pocket God Plus Videos (Apple iPhone Apps)

Pocket Devil is an interactive entertainment toy. Obviously it’s directly comparable to Pocket God, the super popular classic app. Rather than interacting with “pygmies” you instead have devils, called mugat2 at your disposal. Rather than on an island you’re in hell. Overall this is just an entertainment app, and not really a game. All there is to do is to kill the devils in different ways. You can’t really review Pocket Devil without looking at Pocket God also, so at the bottom is just the verdict and video of Pocket God. Pocket Devil pales in comparison to the feature set of Pocket God which has had 28 updates. In Pocket Devil you can have six little devils on screen maximum. You fire them in from the cannon in the upper corner. There are six ways to dispose of the devils. You can just grab them and drop them in the lava

French developer White Birds has created a new iPhone game called Babel Rising, which sees you in a powerful role to prevent humans from building a tower to heaven. In your mission, you’re equipped with five spells: lightning, tornado, fire from heaven, tsunami, and earthquake, and even the direct finger of God. As expected, the little humans are in constant action, doing their stuff ’round the clock like they’re in Dubai before the credit crisis. Eagle-eyed folks of PocketGamer noted similarity of Babel Rising and Pocket God, and we see where they got those – the graphics (and they say gameplay) is/are looks made in the same fashion. The only question is – can Babel Rising repeat the success of Pocket God? There’s a milestone to keep the team motivated. Anyway, the game should be released later in December, when you will be able to grab it for $1.99. Dusan has

There have been a whole mess of game updates that have been released in the latest App Store refresh. I recommend checking for updates either in iTunes or on your device to see what's out there for the games you own, these happen to be my favorite three updates I downloaded tonight: Hook Champ, $1.99 (On sale from $2.99) - We were given a preview of the update earlier this month, and all the new content and features the developer teased us with are finally here. Aside from a new playable character, and another set of levels, Hook Champ also features full OpenFeint integration with achievements and the ability to compete against your friends' times in any level of the game. is also available (although obviously lacking the new content) if you haven't had the chance to give the game a try yet. For Bolt Creative‘s nth update for their beloved app Pocket God, they’ve decided to give the pygmies a brand new ice island along with some holiday cheer… The PygChill Update! Looking at the poster above, you get to see a sneak peek of the new ice island along with the big and evil ice monster. But that’s not all, do you want to create a very Christmas-y island like this? New Island Features Besides the ice monster and the totally new ice landscape, the pygmies can actually battle against the monster and even cook in an igloo!

With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform

While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is an excellent starting place to catch you up.

Back on January 9, 2009 the dynamic duo of Dave Castelnuovo and Allan Dye, joined super powers to create the Pocket God app. It's a perfectly warped, episodic microgame that allows iPhone users to lord over a gang of energetic pygmy islanders. Computer programmer Dave Castelnuovo and Allan Dye, who serves as the game's illustrator/animator are about to take a fantastical leap forward by rocketing their Pocket God brainchild into the lucrative world of comic books. "We just signed a deal to do a Pocket God comic book and graphic novel with Ape Entertainment," Castelnuovo said. "We'll launch a printed version that will go into comic book stores, but it will be distributed online first." will create a series of four comic books that will ultimately be merged together to make a Pocket God graphic novel.
When it comes to god games for the iPhone, the king at the moment seems to be Bolt Creative’s Pocket God as it not only sells for $.99, but it’s actually a fun game with continued support by Bold Creative by way up regular updates. Ngmoco’s GodFinger, however, might be the game to finally be able to compete with the juggernaut that is Pocket God. In episode 2-1 of the ngmoshow, GodFinger producer Stephanie Morgan is interviewed to find out what exactly GodFinger is. The developers behind GodFinger have a lot of experience with god games, namely Black & White and the Fable series, which with that info alone is one of the main reasons why GodFinger is on my radar. We also get a quick little demo that shows what exactly we all can expect when GodFinger is released on the App Store ‘Soon’.

Kotaku got the scoop this afternoon on a surprising development in the Pocket God [App Store] universe: A comic book series is coming. The Pocket God comic is a collaboration between Bolt Creative and indie comic company Ape Entertainment and will initially be released as a digital four issue mini-series with print issues and a trade paperback coming later. Both companies are excited at the prospect of the comic book, as Bolt Creative is bringing an army of over 2 million fans to the table, while Ape Entertainment and publisher iVerse Media could potentially expose tons more people to the pygmies of Pocket God that may not be iPhone gamers. Pocket God has been an amazing success since its release nearly a year ago. Initially, there was so little to do in Pocket God that we were reluctant to cover it, or even label it a "game". 30 episodes later and

It’s not an everyday’s scene to have a game which leaves the realm of computers/consoles. Tomb Raider, Mario Bross, Doom, Hitman, Halo and Max Payne are rare examples of games that were turned to movies and/or comics. And now we have the first iPhone game, Pocket God, to follow the route. Actually, it’s not the movie we’re talking about but a comic book. Bolt Creative, the company behind the game, has struck a deal with Ape Entertainment to “port” Pocket God onto the printed page. According to the company’s CEO Dave Castelnuov, “A comic book series is a natural extension of the Pocket God brand. Ape Entertainment is the perfect partner to help bring our island to book form.” The four-part comic mini-series will initially be released digitally, with a print version following soon after.
Following Angry Birds, we have another iPhone success story to share. The name of the game is Doodle Jump, it costs 99 cents and it has hit the 3 million paid downloads mark! That’s more than two other popular titles – Flight Control and Pocket God, and I’m sure I’m not the only one impressed with the figure. The best thing is that it comes from an independent development house (as opposed to big name publisher) – Lima Sky. In case you haven’t seen Doodle Jump, it’s an accelerometer based jumper which sees you guiding the Doodler on a “springy journey up, up, up a sheet of graph paper.” Along the way, you’ll be picking up jet packs, avoiding black holes, and blasting baddies with nose balls. It sounds ridiculous, but that’s only until you give it a try. Finally, to further illustrate how addictive and popular the game is, here

by You know that “Trololo” viral video meme with the Soviet singer (Eduard Khil) singing a lyricless song in some sort of Russian alternate dimension 1970s rendition of the late 1950s? If you do, then get this: That meme now has its own iPhone app [iTunes link]. If you don’t know what Trololo is, you can watch the video here. The free app arrived in the Apple App Store on Saturday, and it’s free today “to celebrate the International trololo day.” It features a Jib Jab-esque re-creation of the Trololo vid, with Eduard Khil dancing across the screen in time with the music. You’re given a few ways to mess with the scene and unlock more as you use it. It’s kind of Pocket God-esque [iTunes link], but not as robust or polished. Exactly why or how the features are unlocked is anyone’s guess; they seem to just pop up as

If you've ever had the desire to live the life of a dastardly pirate (and really, who hasn't?), then the new game Plunderland [$2.99 from developer JohnnyTwoShoes gives you the opportunity to do just that. The game features sharp, colorful graphics that take advantage of the iPhone 4's Retina Display and a mixture of touch and tilt controls that make it easy to wreak havoc on the open seas. Don't let the cute graphics fool you however, as these pirates are vile to the core. With a simple pickup and play style, many interactive ways to dispatch enemies, an upgradeable ship, and some of the most charming visuals I've seen, Plunderland should satisfy your craving to loot and pillage. Plunderland consists of left to right scrolling levels where you must collect as much loot as possible while dispatching anybody or anything that gets in your way. Your ship operates on a

The long awaited comic app for the iPhone sensation Pocket God [99¢], which we previewed way back in February, has just been released on the App Store. Titled Pocket God Comics [99¢], it follows the hilarious (and often destructive) antics of the pygmies from the Pocket God universe. It's a universal app, and has been designed with higher resolution artwork for running on the iPad, although it looks quite sharp and colorful on the iPhone. The initial app purchase comes with the first issue of the comic, which was created by Ape Entertainment, that runs inside of a reader shell that was developed by publisher iVerse Media. This allows future issues to be bought directly from inside the app, and the shell even features a GPS comic book shop locator to find your nearest local retail outlet for purchasing the physical version of Pocket God Comics. Also forthcoming is the latest

The Pocket God Update Song, by Jonathan Mann (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Pocket God is still rolling along. It was one of the first big original iPhone games out there, and more than any other title on the App Store, Bolt Creative has been able to both keep the app popular with constant updates and content additions, and even license the app elsewhere in the form of comics (and presumably other media, if they can swing it). Here's another example of that -- Bolt posted this video of Steve Jobs' favorite new singer songwriter Jonathan Mann (he of the extremely awkward iPhone Antenna song played at the Apple event a while back) singing a new tune about the game and its fans' constant requests for updates and new content. The song was commissioned to show off the new Dance Pack content, which lets your little islanders boogie down for 99 cents. It's cute. We've heard this from the Doodle Jump folks as well

Pocket God Sees A Double Rainbow (148 Apps)

By Chris Hall on November 9th, 2010 Pocket God sees a double rainbow. Oh those poor, unfortunate Pygmies. Since January 2009, the original smash hit app, Pocket God, has received 35 updates, bringing shark infested waters, dangerous volcanoes, vicious ice geysers, death inducing ghosts, and ritualistic death to the stoic island Pygmies. Very rarely in their existence have the Pygmies been given an update that didn’t involve the death of the little island natives, but the 35th update gives them something magical to behold. A double rainbow… all the way across the sky! The new episode, titles “Double Rainbow All The Way Across The Sky,” gives you the ability to hand draw double rainbows that the pygmies will fawn over. Instead of just using their loving eyes, the pygmies can now talk, saying things like “full on,” “what does this mean!?” and more. Their oogling looks of bewilderment have also been

Bolt Creative, the company behind the super-popular title Pocket God, is teaming-up with mobile publisher ngmoco to bring everyone’s favorite Pygmies to Android and Windows Phone 7 platforms. Android smartphone owners should already be able to find the game in the Android Market, while those with devices running Microsoft’s latest mobile OS will get it “soon” — i.e. no specific date has been announced. If you haven’t heard of Pocket God, you should know it’s one of the most popular iPhone games to date. It has received over 30 free updates that include mini-games and continues to impress both the newbies and those that have downloaded the game when it was in the episode 1. The game is so popular that it has also spawned its own comic book, a first for any franchise born in the mobile app space.
Pocket God Announces Updates Just in Time for Christmas (148 Apps)

Bolt Creative has lots of new goodies just in time for the holidays: a "Konkey Dong" update for the main Pocket God app; a new issue for Pocket God Comics; and a cheerful Fishmas video, too. It's pygmy time! It’s hard to believe it, but Pocket God is already on its 36th update. If you’ve somehow missed it, the now-classic app gives users an island populated with charismatic “pygmies,” along with myriad ways of torturing the poor souls. Fire ants, lightning, sharks – the pygmies have gone through a lot since Pocket God’s long-ago debut. They even have their own comic now, which has also received an update. But first, let’s look at the main app. The 36th update, named “Konkey Dong,” is the last of three primate-inspired updates. I’ll let the app’s updated description speak for itself: A new gorilla idol appears on Ape Mountain (when the banana tree is

As we move closer to the 10 billionth app sold on the App Store, Apple has updated its all-time top paid and free iPhone and iPad app lists, showing the top 200,000 or so apps on the store, ranked in order of sales and downloads. There aren't a lot of surprises in here -- if you've been following the App Store pretty closely over the first few years of its life, odds are that you'll know about most of these titles. But it is interesting to see them ranked. On the iPhone, Doodle Jump takes the crown as the most popular paid app of all time, with Tap Tap Revenge 3, Pocket God and Angry Birds filling out the top four. In free apps, Facebook and other free utilities are on top, with Backflip Studios' Paper Toss the only game in the top few entries. The iPad lists are interesting, being

Looking for some great paid Apps? We've already looked at the good free stuff. As we mentioned with those free applications, with everything the App market has to offer, it's hard to find stuff that's worth your time. With paid Apps, not only do you want the download to be worth your time, you want it to be worth your money. Yeah, 99 cents is almost nothing, but it adds up, especially when there are a lot of junk apps out there. Let's take a look at the stuff that gets more attention: 1) Doodle Jump – 99 cents The App description even makes sure to remind us that it's the all-time top paid iPhone App in the US App Store.

Lima Sky's Doodle Jump [99¢] is no stranger to crossovers. In fact, there was a time where the current trend of the App Store was either including Doodle Jump in some way, or getting Doodle Jump to include an element of your game. Pocket God [99¢], for instance, featured a mini-game similar to Doodle Jump while Doodle Jump included the pygmies as a secret playable character. According to our bros over at Pocket Gamer, Lima Sky has just inked a deal with Universal Pictures to include the main character of the upcoming movie "Hop", likely as part of their somewhat inevitable Easter-themed update. Doodle Jump has become surprisingly mainstream over the years, and it has been featured in a number of places including Lady Gaga concerts, The Jimmy Fallon show, and even on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Or, as Lima Sky front man Igor Pusenjak says, “To have Doodle

'Pocket God' For iPad Getting A New Retro-Style Mini-Game (Touch Arcade)

You know Pocket God [$.99], right? On the smaller Apple handhelds, it’s a game defined by the updates it has and still receives on a frequent basis. That tradition is continuing on in the iPad version [$4.99], as the next update is poised to add yet another mini-game set on a brand new planet to explore, Mercury, “a highly technological world where the civilization is obsessed with all things fast.” So, what’s the game? Great. Glad you asked. It’s called “Hover Jump,” and Bolt tells us it’s something like a take on Data East’s Bump and Jump. In Hover Jump, you’ll control a hover car-equipped pygmy tasked with navigating a “treacherous” road full of jumps and enemies. Jumping on enemies or over gaps eliminates threat, but the action also tasks your fuel. The not-so-subtle idea here is the push-and-pull of conservation versus action. The update should be out very soon, if

Last Summer, we were treated to a fun and unique title called Plunderland [$2.99] by developer Johnny Two Shoes. Plunderland is a side-scrolling game that lets you control a ship full of pirates as you battle enemies on the open seas and pillage unfortunate island inhabitants. There's elements of Pocket God [99¢] in how you can manipulate characters and environments, and combat is similar to artillery games where you set the trajectory of your cannon fire to take out enemy ships and sea creatures. This is all topped off with incredibly charming graphics and sound. We really liked Plunderland when we reviewed it last July, and in the months following release the game was updated with new modes, Game Center integration, universal iPad support, and many tweaks that ironed out all of the issues we originally had with the game in regards to finicky controls and camera zooming.Things have been pretty

WWDC 2011: We Check In on the 'Pocket God' Series with Bolt Creative, 'Journey To Uranus' Now Universal and On Sale for 99¢ (Touch Arcade)

At WWDC this year, I sat down with Dave Castelnuovo from Bolt Creative to talk about what’s upcoming in the various entries in the Pocket God series. We’ve always been fans of Pocket God [99¢] around TouchArcade, but admittedly hadn’t quite stayed up to date with the series as of late. After Dave showed me some of the recent new features added into the games, I was really surprised by just how much they’ve evolved since I’ve been on Pocket God hiatus. The biggest bit of news is that the previously iPad-only Pocket God: Journey To Uranus [99¢] is now a universal app and is currently on sale for 99¢, down from $4.99. This version of Pocket God lets you take your pygmies into space to various planets, each with their own unique features. You can also discover mini-games which are based on classic arcade games, like Bump ‘n’ Jump, Joust,

'Pocket God' Releases 40th Update: "Battle of the Gods" (Touch Arcade)

Pocket God [99¢] is an App Store phenomenon that just doesn't stop. Originally released all the way back in January of 2009, Pocket God has now seen it's 40th major content update, which basically blows away every other iOS game imaginable when it comes to updates. Looking back on it, if you flipped out a buck on the game back when it was first released, how far that dollar has gone is just incredible. Similarly, the amount of content included in Pocket God now is just nuts, to the point that I don't really even know where you'd start if you just downloaded it today. The latest update, entitled "Battle of the Gods plays off the previous update where players collected idols. These idols are now used for what amounts to almost rock paper scissors Pokemon-style battles with your pygmies. You can get a look at how this all works in

Pocket God set to release 40th (!) content update (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Bolt Creative has announced that it's planning to release its 40th content update for the popular Pocket God app, which will feature a mechanic where players can collect idols and battle them against gods, with more idols and gods in future updates to come. The update also includes a "Mafia skin pack" for in-app purchase, which will cosmetically change some of the game's graphics to be Mafia-related. But what's in the pack isn't quite as amazing as the fact that it's number 40. Nowadays, free-to-play games and in-app purchases are almost commonplace, but back when Pocket God started a few years ago, that definitely wasn't the case. Pocket God and a number of other titles have really paved the way on this model, where gamers can download a game for free or cheap, and then enjoy a steady stream of content updates from the developers, along with solid in-app purchases.
Pocket God Receives Landmark 40th Update (148 Apps)

That's less than 2.5c per update! That tiny little 99c purchase of Pocket God way back in 2009 has gone a heck of a long way with updates coming in fast. It’s meant that owners of Pocket God have always had something to go back to in the game and something new to discover. Now 2 years after its initial release, Bolt Creative has announced the release of the game’s 40th update offering some astounding value. Impressive stuff for such a simple yet compelling title. The 40th update, titled Battle of the Gods, promises to be the largest content expansion to date for the game. While the previous update introduced God Idols and God Island to the game world, this new episode allows players to use up to four of the aforementioned idols in a showdown against one of 40 gods on God Island. Each God Idol promises different attacks and

Pocket God gets its 41st episode! (IntoMobile)

Talk about supporting existing customers. Bolt Creative released 41st (yes that’s forty-first) update to its super-popular Pocket God game. The new episode titled “I Sting the Body Electric” doesn’t just add new level, but also comes with iOS 5 support, including asynchronous turn-based gaming and iCloud storage. The new update introduces a new coral reef location on the ocean floor, which is infested with deadly jellyfish. Your goal, as you can imagine, is to feed your pygmies to the electrified jellyfish or make a circle out of them to trap pygmies in a fence of wet, squishy death. An “Underwater World” skin pack is also available through in-app purchase that changes the Pocket God island’s volcano into a whale, as well as change the island’s boulder into a giant puffer fish. We’ve nothing but the words of praise for Bolt Creative. That’s the way to keep your customers happy, while also

By Rob LeFebvre on December 19th, 2011 Unleashing even more death and fury on the little Pygmies in Bolt Creative's Pocket God.
Pocket God Sees 43rd Update – Also Predicts Armageddon (148 Apps)

By Rob Rich on February 3rd, 2012 Bolt Creative unleashes a Pocket God Apocalypse. Pocket God is still going strong, blasting right through update number forty-three (43!). The newest episode, “Killing Time,” deals with the kind of stuff that turned Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Deloreans and use of the word “paradox” into national phenomena. In other words, it has to do with futzing around with time. Like time, time. Not wasting a few minutes at the bus stop, time. Players will be able to visit the new Apocalypse Island, home of a multi-roomed temple that includes a time-shifting chamber. It also houses a creepy Aztec calendar that’s counting down to 11:11am, December 21st, 2012. This is just the first of many apocalypse-themed updates, according to Bolt. Each of the temple’s many rooms features some sort of Armageddon-like power, each to be opened with future updates, but at the moment no
