Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends. We couldn't get feedback from everybody on the RWW team (and our BlackBerry users weren't very forthcoming with suggestions either), but here are the recommendations from Richard MacManus (R), Marshall Kirkpatrick (M), Frederic Lardinois (F), and Phil Glockner (P).
Apple’s iPhone has changed the game since its debut almost two years ago — building a powerful platform for on-the-go Web browsing and applications, in addition to making cellphone calls. Just a few months after the iPhone appeared, Apple (AAPL) introduced the very similar iPod Touch, which didn’t get as much attention, perhaps because its name understates the scope of its features. The Touch resembles the iPhone, only thinner, with the same multitouch screen, fast Web browser, iPod media player and ability to run almost all of the 35,000 apps in Apple’s App Store. It doesn’t have a camera, or a few other iPhone features, and it can’t connect to cellphone networks, relying instead on Wi-Fi for its Internet connection. The Touch has caught on: Apple recently indicated that it has sold 16 million of them. One reason for the popularity is that its freedom from a phone company eliminates pricey

Citing an exclusive source from within AT&T, appmodo reports that "tethering support is coming later this summer" is AT&T-speak for "tethering support is coming at the end of July." It won't be coming cheaply, however; appmodo's source says a tethering option will cost AT&T customers a whopping $55 a month. While this is cheaper than the $70 rumor that's been making the rounds, it still strikes me as ridiculous that AT&T is charging additional money for this option in the first place. Considering their "unlimited" data plan is reportedly only unlimited until you reach 5 GB or so in any given month, it seems preposterous for AT&T to charge their customers an extra fee to use the iPhone to access the internet via tethering. But, since AT&T's wrangling caused Skype to be restricted to WiFi only and SlingPlayer Mobile to be almost totally crippled compared to the same software on different

Skype (iTunes link) has been updated to 1.1, which brings it some new features making it more closely resemble its desktop sibling. So, what's new? Well, there's now support for Skype voicemail (subscription needed) and SMS text messaging. However, SMS texting is not bidirectional. Which means that you can send SMS texts, but not receive them. And while a dialog box states that sent SMS texts will show up as sent from the sender's Skype screen name, in my case it displayed the "999-99" caller ID that typically accompanies calls from a Skype-based client. Perhaps that's because I don't have a SkypeIn number? The 1.1 update also provides additional language support as well as more help when dialing phones.

When push notification finally made its way to the iPhone, a lot of people were anticipating IMs pushed to their iPhone. At first, I scoffed at this idea. I’d always figured IMs were based around the “instant” part of the phrase, and someone pushing an IM to me might be disappointed if I don’t get back to them right away. Well, guess who’s been a big iPhone IM-er since 3.0 came out? Go on, you’ll never guess. Yep, it’s me. I’d like my crow with a side of au jus, and a loaded baked potato, please. First a quick word of warning: by no means are my comments here to be construed as any sort of a formal review. While I’ve tried to run all of these apps through their paces, I wouldn’t feel comfortable calling any of my comments a review — they’re more like first impressions.

According to USA Today, Apple, AT&T, and Google are all expected to file their comments to the FCC regarding the rejection of the official Google Voice iPhone app, but that news has taken a back burner to some other news regarding Google and the FCC. Google is now under the FCC’s microscope as well thanks to their questionable app approval process. As part of its Google Voice probe, the FCC has asked Google to describe its process for “considering and approving” Android apps. The agency also asked the Web giant to specify the percentage of apps that are rejected and explain why. The USA Today report specifically mentions that Google Android users are only allowed to use a crippled version of Skype, which was designed specifically for Google’s platform. Android users get Skype Lite, a watered-down version of the original that routes calls over traditional phone networks — not the Internet. As

I admit, I was one of those to pile on ol' Ma Bell as the culprit for keeping the Google Voice app (don't I wish that was a real iTunes link) off the App Store. Restrictions on Skype and the SlingPlayer app on the iPhone had conditioned me to believe that the "game changing" iPhone had, well, a completely different set of rules applied to it by AT&T. While many in the tech community continued to jump atop the dog pile, in which AT&T was at the very bottom, Apple ran the ball back the other way without anybody noticing. Apple's response to the FCC's questions covers several areas -- including the fact that it acted alone without AT&T's consultation -- in rejecting not yet allowing the Google Voice app. Almost as striking as Apple's admitted culpability, however, is its rationale for it, which smacks of odd logic and damages the

While the U.S. was Skyping it up, Canadians still had to wait as a version wasn’t available to them… until now. Thankfully, Skype is now available to the true north strong and free… and yep, it IS free! So why no Skype for Canada until now? Apparently there was a restriction over the licensing of an audio codec used to play sound from Skype on the iPhone. Good grief Charlie Brown. Guess that’s been resolved. About gosh darn time, right? Canadians, join me and get your Skype on. You can download it via the App Store for free (iTunes link). James was born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada. Almost 15 years ago he started out in the 'real world' as a web and graphic designer. Through the years he has finely tuned his skills in SEO, internet marketing,

Is the cell coverage in your area not up to par? Whether you happen to have steel walls or live where there are no cell phone towers or trees cleverly disguised as cell phone towers, some of us must deal with the reality that, while we own arguably the most innovative gadget in recent years in the iPhone, we may not have had the best carrier to accompany it. One way to address this "bag of hurt" is through the Skype [iTunes link] app. If you don't already have the Skype app, download it -- it's a free download in the App Store. Next, you'll need to make sure that Skype stays online when the screen is locked. This is accessible via the Skype app preferences within the iPhone's main settings page. After this is enabled, the Skype app continues to run in the background and maintains a Wi-Fi connection even

Skype 2.8, with hot fixes for Mac OS X 10.6, is available for your downloading pleasure. It's a micro update of the summertime release of Skype 2.8; the version number is now up to 2.8.0.722. The release date is listed as September 17. Version 2.8, originally released in July, included features like screen sharing & improved audio codecs that had been around in the Mac beta and the PC version of Skype for awhile. Version 2.8 also included Skype Access, which is a pay as you go public Wi-Fi service based on the Boingo network. This latest update adds a bunch of fixes for Snow Leopard. Skype has very detailed release notes if you are so inclined. Skype is a very popular solution for free audio and video chatting and instant messaging. The app also provides many paid services to allow you to call cellular and wired phones anywhere in the

AT&T announced today that they're clearing the way for Apple to enable VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) applications like and to run on AT&T's 3G wireless network. The cellular carrier rocketed out an official press release addressing VoIP for iPhone on Tuesday afternoon, just shortly after rumors heralded that the announcement was forthcoming ahead of the wireless industry's CTIA conference due to start on Wednesday. "AT&T today announced it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T's wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision." It's somewhat obvious that all this hoopla is the result of the FCC's renewed push for net neutrality, opening the floodgate for a world of interesting new VoIP applications for iPhone users beyond Skype. This recent shot across the

No sooner had I posted this article and read the initial comments than I suddenly was overwhelmed with an urge to let it ra1n and jailbreak again. I had been concerned over the very minor chance of something going wrong and winding up with a bricked iPhone, but I figured, what ‘s the worst that can happen? I have an iPod Touch here in Iraq (or is it iRaq?) with me, so the most I would lose capability-wise if everything went straight to hell would be the ability to get incoming text messages, and that could be rectified easily, if inconveniently, while the iPhone was sent home for repair. So, I took a deep breath, and Wow. Just Wow. Every time I jailbreak, I can ‘t help but feel like Dorothy in the (colorized) Wizard of Oz when she walks out of her house and everything goes from black and white

45 Applications That Will Be On My iPhone Next Year (iPhone Download Blog)

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the top 40 iPhone apps of 2009 in the App Store. This article got quite a bit of success (especially on Twitter) and a few of you asked me what where my favorite iPhone apps of 2009. I’ve had many apps come and go this year so I guess the best way to tell what my favorites are is to tell you the one I will keep with me for next year. Facebook – Need I say more? Indispensable if you have a Facebook account (note: you may want to join our Facebook page). Flight Control – My favorite iPhone game. Ever! It’s fun and addicting. My best score is 357 planes landed. Can you do better? Bejeweled 2 – My fiancée turned me on this game. I used to play it a lot but I got over it. Tap Tap Revenge 3 –

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Jan 5, 2010 | UPDATE: Skype got back to us all official PR like: We’ve identified the fault which has made Skype for iPhone unavailable to some people. A fix is underway, and we expect that the app will be fully available in the next few hours. ORIGINAL: If you click on an iTunes link to get the Skype for iPhone App, as of this writing, iTunes pops up a notification saying Skype for iPhone is not currently available in the US App Store, or other international App Stores. If you search for Skype, the Skype app doesn’t show up. Skype’s official iPhone app page, still tells you to “Get it now”, but it’s currently not get-able. Temporary glitch? Sign that maybe, finally it’s being replaced with the 3G version AT&T, Apple and Skype said back in October ’09 would be coming our way? Or just gone

By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Jan 16, 2010 | Sorry, Skype 1.3 [Free - iTunes link], we know you’re trying, at least we think you are, but it’s 2010 now and we have to agree with 9to5mac where’s the push notification and VoIP over 3G? Maybe Apple hasn’t given you the tools or SDK agreement for VoIP yet, we don’t know, but push notification are good to go, you know? We appreciate the landscape mode of IM, the hints and tips, the general performance improvements, the call quality indicator, and the call drop after hold fix, really we do, but you’re one of the premiere apps in your class — we know you can knock this app out of the park.

Skype for the iPhone [iTunes link] has been updated to version 1.3. The software gains a landscape mode for instant messaging, the ability to give hints and tips to new users and a call quality monitor. However, the app still lacks many major features that users want -- including push notification, Bluetooth support and the ability to call out over the AT&T 3G network. Despite the claim of improved performance and the fix of a call drop issue when returning to a held call, reviewers on the App Store are also noting frequent crashes with this version of the software.

iPhone SDK updated: VoIP over 3G now permitted (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

It's been a long time coming, but the last hurdle is gone -- Apple has lifted the restrictions against 3G VoiP calls from the iPhone Software Development Kit. The implications of this are pretty huge. Not only does this mean that VoIP apps like Skype [iTunes Link] can now be easily updated to allow VoIP access over 3G on the iPhone, it also means that the 3G-enabled versions of the new iPad should be able to take full advantage of VoIP over 3G as well. The iPad does come with a microphone and a speaker, so while you won't be able to hold the device up to your ear like a phone (although it would be pretty funny to watch you try), calls over Skype or another VoIP program should theoretically be just as clear on the iPad as they are on the iPhone's tiny speaker. This has the potential to

In all of the hullabaloo over it the iPad, a long-awaited change to the iPhone got lost in the shuffle: Apple has taken the wraps off VoIP calls over the 3G network. That could mean a potentially huge savings on domestic and foreign calls. The reason is VoIP calls use data minutes rather than voice minutes. That means that you could buy a plan with minimal number of minutes — fewer than you actually use — as long as you have an unlimited data plan. Then you could make as many calls as you want over data. The first VoIP product up and running on the iPhone is iCall, a free app that gives you three ways to pay for calls. You can sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada that require you to listen to an ad before your call is made. Calls are limited to

We’re really excited about Apple’s iPad, and we want to make all of our products available for it as soon as we can. We requested Stanza remove the USB functionality in their app as it was a simple case of the developer using private APIs in violation of the developer agreement.

Is Skype/Verizon Deal Delaying Skype Over 3G for iPhone? (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Mar 6, 2010 | Is the recently announced Skype/Verizon deal delaying the release of Skype over 3G for the iPhone? Previously AT&T announced they would change their policy and allow VoIP over 3G, Apple announced they would change their SDK agreement to allow it, and Skype announced they would provide it to their iPhone users. AT&T has come through, Apple has come through, other VoIP clients have begun offering 3G. And Skype…? They said they were waiting to make sure Apple was okay with it. They made sure. They said they were waiting to improve 3G call quality. And…? Still nothing. They did, however, announce a deal for Skype over 3G with Verizon at Mobile World Congress a couple weeks ago. Since then, WMExperts tell us the Windows Mobile Skype app is no longer available for download. According to Venture Beat (via BGR) their Symbian Skype App

by Luke Knowles is the founder of numerous money-saving websites including Coupon Sherpa, Gift Card Granny and Mr. Free Stuff. In 2008 Luke founded Free Shipping Day, now a red-letter discount date for online holiday shopping. Despite a recession allegedly in our rear view mirror, frugality remains a hot, dare I say trendy topic. Nowhere is that more evident than in the often expensive world of consumer tech. Those of you currently debating that iPad purchase know just what I mean. But remember, a one-time splurge could pay dividends in the long run if you do your homework. Take Steve Jobs’ previous technological wonder. The iPhone’s price tag might seem hefty, but just a cursory review of its money-saving potential might prove tempting to even the most fiscally conservative. Here are ten of our favorite apps for the frugal-focused. The first step to saving money is learning how to handle it.

Wi-Fi Edition: Can An iPad Replace Your iPhone? (Mac|Life)

Posted 04/08/2010 at 1:52pm | by J.R. Bookwalter A recent survey of new iPad owners sounding off on Twitter revealed that a whopping 26 percent were unhappy about the fact that the device couldn’t replace their iPhone. That got us thinking: What would it be like to spend a day with only the iPad? With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We have yet to find any iPhone apps that don’t also run on the iPad -- even seemingly more complex ones such as SlingPlayer Mobile or Skype work just fine -- so most of the iPhone functionality can already be duplicated just by installing the same apps you already use. It’s Not a Phone, Silly The biggest trick

iPhone’s Skype App Finally Does Calling Over 3G (iSource)

The iPhone Skype app has been updated – to Version 2.0.0 – and has added the long-awaited ability to make voice calls over 3G. Some very good news from Skype this holiday weekend. They’re claiming CD-quality for Skype-to Skype calls on an iPhone 3GS or 2nd generation iPod Touch. Calls are free until the end of August 2010 (via Razorianfly) although carrier data charges still apply, and then there will be a ‘small charge’ for the service starting 2011. There are no more details than that on what the charges will be, at least none I can turn up so far. Alicia and I were able to do a quick test of Skype over 3Gs, with me in Texas and her in Austria. Both our calls went flawlessly, and the call quality seemed very good. It also still works very nicely in the background on my jailbroken 3GS. You can find this

Skype for iPhone Now Supports 3G Calling (Mashable)

by There’s good news and bad news. The good: Skype 2.0 for iPhone [iTunes link] lets you make calls over 3G. The bad: After August, you’ll need to pay for the feature. That’s right: The most yearned-for feature of Skype for iPhone, making calls over 3G, is finally here. The new app just landed in the app store, and by all accounts the 3G calls hold up fairly well. Here’s the catch: After August 2010, Skype will start charging a “small monthly fee” for use of the 3G calling feature. You heard that right — even though you’re already paying AT&T (in the U.S., at least) for your data plan, Skype is throwing in an extra fee. At this point we’re not sure if the move is Skype’s own doing, or if the network operators had a hand in trying to make the Skype app a less desirable option.

An update to the Skype iPhone/iPod Touch app [App Store, free] has hit the app store, and now supports calling over 3G. With Skype, users can call or text anyone else using Skype for free. However, Skype has announced that they plan to start charging a monthly fee. Their app description simply states, “Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).” The app may still be handy for iPod Touch users, but I don’t see why iPhone users will pay Skype to make calls if they’re already paying their phone provider.
Skype App Updated to Allow Voice Calls Over 3G (MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - Front Page)

The Skype app for iPhone [App Store] has been updated to allow voice calls to be made over 3G data networks. Skype is a popular VOIP (voice over IP) application that allows users to make phone calls from their computer or mobile phone over a network connection. This avoids using up any allotment of "voice minutes" from cell phone providers. Instead, the calls are routed over the data network which are traditionally offered in an unlimited monthly block. In the past, AT&T has restricted these applications to Wi-Fi networks only to avoid piggybacking on their 3G service. AT&T, however, changed their position on this back in January but it has taken this long for Skype to release an update that supports this feature. Skype indicates that this feature is free until at least the end of August, but at that time a small monthly fee will be initiated. It's not clear

Skype Calls Over 3G Now a Reality (TheAppleBlog)

The wait is over. It’s been a long time coming, but you can now finally make calls using Skype over 3G. Version 2.0 of Skype’s free iPhone app can be downloaded from the iTunes store now. However, despite making 3G VOIP calls a reality, it’s not all good news: the feature will soon become a premium option. Skype has detailed that starting late August 2010 the company will introduce a small fee that users will be required to pay on a monthly basis in order to use the Skype-to-Skype 3G call making feature. From now until the unspecified August date users can try the new feature free-of-charge. Our early tests have proven the service works well with voice quality being surprisingly crisp and clear. Skype has described the quality of calls as near “CD-quality sound”; of course this all depends on how good your signal is. When in a call the

Skype, a leading provider of inexpensive phone calls over the Internet, has finally completed a long-awaited move to make its service available over AT&T’s 3G network. Before, you could only make Skype calls from an iPhone when it was connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. Now people can make low-cost Skype calls any time their phone has a connection, whether it is to AT&T’s 3G network or through Wi-Fi. AT&T had announced that it would allow phone calls over the Internet, known as voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, phoning as far back as October of 2009. But Apple first had to make some changes in terms of service to allow that to happen. Those changes came last February. An app called iCall went live almost immediately, becoming the first app for Internet calls out of the gate. But Skype remained the 800 pound gorilla of low cost VoIP services, saying

It looks like iPhone users are very interested in making VoIP calls over 3G networks, as Skype said its 2.0 version of the iPhone app has been well received. “We’ve had millions of downloads to date,” Russ Shaw, Skype’s general manager for mobile, told Reuters. “That’s really positive.” The latest version enables iPhone users to use AT&T’s mobile data network to make free Skype-to-Skype calls, while the previous version only allowed the VoIP calling over WiFi networks. One of the reasons AT&T users are eager to get this product now is that Skype said it will start charging users a monthly fee, starting in August, to make VoIP calls over cellular data networks. Shaw didn’t dive into specifics about how much the fee will be but he did say the company doesn’t want to “price ourselves out of the market,” particularly because consumers currently use it for free. Greg was born just outside of San Jose, and now lives in the East Bay of California. → Learn More Skype has always sort of served as one of the poster children for why iOS just had to allow applications to run in the background. I mean, come on: being able to avoid gobbling up my precious minutes without having to keep the application open all the time just so I don’t miss calls? Yes. Yes please. Its been a few weeks since iOS launched to the multitasking masses — and today, the dream of always-on Skype becomes a reality. Skype just pushed an update to their application which adds support for iOS 4′s multitasking abilities. Incoming call while the app isn’t in view? You’ll see a prompt, like the one

Skype’s iPhone App Can Now Run in the Background (Mashable)

by Skype for iPhone has been upgraded to include support for the multitasking capabilities of iOS4. The update means that users can now accept Skype calls and instant messages while running other applications, as well as switch to other tasks while using Skype. The Skype for iPhone [iTunes link] experience is now essentially on par with — if not better than — the native calling experience on the iPhone. The application was previously enhanced to support calls over 3G. Now calls made over 3G or Wi-Fi will no longer be restricted to users who have the Skype application running in the foreground. As with all iOS4-compatible apps, users will need to run Skype in the background to take advantage of multitasking and allow for incoming calls. Skype for iPhone also includes the enhanced graphics supported by the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. In addition, Skype revealed that it no longer plans to

Skype (Free) now supports fast app switching and (supposedly) background VoIP, but I still hate it forever. You see, despite Skype’s reputation for connecting people over long distances, it’s done a pretty horrific job at connecting me with family members in the same household. There have been numerous times when Skype has told me I have no friends online, even when I was sitting beside a friend and they were very clearly logged in. I’ve had these kinds of problems for years (this post is just a little biased…) and this newest version of the app feels like no exception. I made sure I had a freshly booted iPhone 3GS with 150+ MB of free RAM before loading Skype 2.1 up for the first time. I tried to message a friend, but got confused when the keyboard started jutting into the chat space. I then asked my friend to call me

Precio: Gratis

Skype gets iPhone iOS 4 multitasking support, allows you to side-step voice minutes completely (IntoMobile)

Good news, Skype users with iPhones, Skype has updated its free iPhone app to support the iOS 4 multitasking feature that allows the app to run in the background. In doing so, the refreshed app basically allows heavy Skype users to avoid using their wireless voice minutes on an or with iOS 4 installed. Rather than make or take voice calls over the cellular network, users can now keep the app running in the background and use their 3G data service to handle all outgoing and incoming internet calls. Not too long ago, Skype updated their iPhone app to work over 3G data networks. Until that update, the app only worked over WiFi connections. We’ll avoid getting into the AT&T-said-Apple-said speculation about why it took the VoIP service so long to allow the iPhone to use the service over 3G. What’s important here is that the ability to make Skype calls

posted by Trey Trawick on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 5:26 pm. Skype for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 now supports background VoIP, allowing users to receive calls even when the app isn’t open. It works both over WiFi and 3g, with no added charge. From the changelog: - Run Skype in the background with multitasking in iOS4. Receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when your iPhone is locked. You can also continue your call while you switch to another application. Multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Video calling isn’t yet supported, but hopefully will be included in an update.

Jailbreakers Discover Issues with Skype Multitasking (Mac|Life)

Posted 07/22/2010 at 4:50am | by J.R. Bookwalter There was a collective sigh of relief when a new version of Skype showed up in the App Store on Wednesday, adding iOS 4 multitasking and the ability to run the app in the background, allowing you to receive calls or chats anytime. There’s just one problem: It doesn’t work if your device is jailbroken. Skype updated their iPhone app to version 2.0.1 on Wednesday (despite the app itself claiming the version number is 2.1), adding the long-awaited ability to multitask with iOS 4 that was first shown off when Apple announced the new version to developers. That means that finally, Skype can run quietly in the background, yet be able to receive calls or IM messages, as well as the ability to open other apps during those calls or chats. However, one group of users has discovered that the promised multitasking simply

4 Ways to Attend Meetings On Your iPad (ReadWriteWeb)

When Apple's iPad launched in April, it was marketed primarily as a consumer device for reading, playing games and viewing media. But as the tablet computer's popularity has grown, so too has its usefulness in other arenas, including business. One of the many business needs met by the 900-app strong "Business" category in the App Store is the ability to attend online meetings. The device is particularly well-suited to attending meetings on the go, with its large screen for viewing the presentation and microphone and speakers for VoIP-based discussions. The popular Web conferencing app GoToMeeting jumped onto the iPad bandwagon early, producing an app that is easy and even sort of fun to use. Simply enter the meeting ID number and your name to join the meeting. From there, you can view the presenter's screen, hear others speaking and respond via the device's microphone or via a headset. When you first

Skype fans, be sure to check your updates in the iTunes App Store as the iPhone version has just been updated. The latest version has a number of bug fixes as well as some new changes. Also, don’t forget about Skype’s latest deal where you get 400 minutes free calling to landlines (or cell phones and land lines in the United States and India) for subscribing. The new features allow you to go offline and tweak the away Skype behaves while running in the background – helpful for you heavy Skype users. Notifications have also been improved and made a little more cleaner, too. But fixes include events during voicemail playback, multiple Skype searches, chat keypad while receiving a call, voicemails being routed to speaker during chat and mor reliable support for iOS 4 devices without multitasking.
9 iPhone Apps for Managing the Recruiting Process (Mashable)

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Typically when businesses decide they need to hire someone, they want to hire as soon as possible. So, time is of the essence in getting the position filled (with the right person, of course). When a single open job listing can yield hundreds of candidates, being able to manage the recruiting process becomes key. Neither companies nor candidates want to be burdened with a bunch of administration. Instead of creating new processes or downloading a bunch of new apps, here are some iPhone apps you might already have that can help you manage the recruiting process. Let us know in the comments below which mobile apps you use to streamline your company’s recruiting process. You’re at a networking event and meet someone who might be a good

Having an iPhone is nice and all, but calling isn’t always free. Then there are those with other iOS devices, such as the iPad and the iPod Touch, both of those devices can be made into a phone if you’d like, thanks to some great VOIP apps that make free calling possible. Have a look at the currently-available Apps that allow you to make VOIP calls on your iOS device: 1) Viber – Free Phone Calls This a cool little App that’s popular right now. Viber doesn’t require you to create an account, doesn’t need you to create a username or hand over a credit card number. The only catch is that to call someone, they must also have Viber. It creates an identity with your current number and only uses your minutes if the other user doesn’t happen to have the App. Other highlights include the fact that it doesn’t

Januar in Las Vegas startet, erwartet.

In a move that's sure to make users stand up and say "Hallelujah," the latest update to the Skype app for iPhone finally adds video calling. The newest version of the app will allow users to make video Skype to Skype calls from their iPhone via Wi-Fi and 3G, and also call Skype desktop users on both OS X and Windows (and we presume their sorely neglected Linux users), as well as those using Skype on their iPhones and iPads. Naturally, if you're on an iPad, you won't get to send video back -- and you have to deal with the iPhone interface since there isn't a native Skype app for the iPad. But, iPad 2 could change that. If the new hardware is released with a camera, Skype will be ready for it, and hopefully with an iPad-optimized app as well. So, have fun with video chatting via Skype and

You'll also notice that iPhone video calls can be made in portrait or landscape mode and receive only video calls are supported on iPad devices with no camera. Which confirms that iPad 2 with cameras will be Skype ready for video calling as well. My initial test drive of this updated app over 3G worked seamlessly. Let's all raise up a toast to Skype!

If you had little interest in video-calling before Apple’s own FaceTime service was introduced with the iPhone 4, we’d be surprised to hear it changed your mind. Good software and decent enough quality couldn’t hide the fact it was seriously limited, thanks to Wi-Fi only connections to other iPhone 4’s or Macs. Now, after a surprisingly long wait, Skype have introduced their own video calling option inside version 3 of their iPhone app. As well as being usable over Wi-Fi, you can make video calls over 3G too; and not just to iPhone 4s but to desktop computers, no matter what OS they’re running. You’ll need to have an iPhone 4, 3GS or the latest 4th generation iPod Touch for two-way video fun, which works in portrait or landscape orientation. Now, although the introduction of video-calling in Skype isn’t going to change many people’s opinion of the service, it will bring

Skype Mobile Video Calling Now Available for iOS Devices over WiFi and 3G (ZiPhone)

Skype app version 3.0 brings the highly-anticipated mobile video calling to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 4G. Skype mobile video calling is set to compete against Apple’s Facetime video chat. However, Skype has a bit advantage because users will be able to use both Wi-Fi and AT&T Inc.'s 3G cellular network. Apple’s Facetime is restricted to just WiFi only. Skype users who make video calls using 3G will get a bit data costs. Some of notable key features of Skype version 3.0 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch include: • Make Skype to Skype video calls on WiFi and 3G* • Call Skype desktop users (Mac OS X or Windows) and other iPhone users. • Two-way video calls supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th gen. • Receive only video supported on iPad and iPod touch 3rd gen, with no camera. • Make video calls in

A Bit of History on Skype's Video Chat for iPhone Over the weekend we caught wind of a little mistake made somewhere within Skype offices. Instructions had been posted for accessing video chat over Skype on an iPhone. CES, which happens in early January, seemed like the best bet for any kind of official announcement, but it seems that the folks behind Skype had other plans. Hitting Sooner Than We'd Expected Today, they've rolled out the latest update to their popular iPhone App, and it adds the much-wanted video calling. Not long after the accidental reveal on the website, we started seeing teaser videos pop up. Each with video taken at a location where it was made obvious that the person on the call was using some sort of handheld mobile device.
Skype's iPhone Video Chat Is Way Cooler Than Apple's FaceTime (iPhone Savior)

Now that Skype has added support for two-way video calling on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and fourth-generation iPod touch over 3G cellular networks, Apple's FaceTime just doesn't seem as cool. The competition just got tougher with since you can finally video chat from anywhere without being limited by Wi-Fi. Plus, when you create a video as slick as Skype has pimping their two-way iPhone video calling, the social advantage definitely goes to the wildly popular Skype-meisters. Brilliantly done!

We knew it was going to happen, but we didn’t know it’d be this soon. Today Skype released Skype 3.0, which adds support for video chat on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation. You can grab Skype 3.0 download here. iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users can now video chat on Skype over their 3G connections, although using WiFi is recommended for better quality. iPad users and iPod touch 3rd generation users can receive and view video chat requests from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users, however they cannot show their own videos because they don’t have a camera. Skype Video chat is free, but additional data charges may apply depending on the plan you’re using. Thankfully I signed up with AT&T early and am on the unlimited data plan, so I don’t need to worry about that. There is

Skype Adds Video Chat, T-Mobile Commercials Rendered Silly (148 Apps)

By Chris Hall on December 31st, 2010 Skype does video chat over 3G. I was up fairly late last night watching an old episode of Law and Order SVU when one of those Apple spoof commercials from T-Mobile came on. In it, the too-cool-for-himself guy with the excessively yellow-orange hair, the Apple guy, was talking to his family via Facetime when he walked out of his Wi-Fi bubble. As you’d expect, he garbles and gadooks into what is assumed is a “lost connection” image while the half pretty, half odd looking Anne Hathaway knockoff explains that the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G can do video chats from anywhere with its mythical 4G network speed. Skype then (covertly) launched their 3.0 update which allows for video chats over 3G. I was saying “a-ha!” when Mariska Hargitay was busting some young punk for kidnapping a girl after a party. I’m pretty sure she died, Ice

Posted 01/03/2011 at 2:17pm | by Cory Bohon The thing we've long-loved about Skype is the ability to conduct a video chat with relative ease, but it wasn't until just last week that you could video chat right from your iOS devices. That's why we wanted to take a minute to show you how to utilize Skype's new video calling features. Video calling has to be one of the greatest advantages of using Skype. The service provides great video quality, and in the case of the iPhone, you can also accept and send video call requests when you're on both Wi-Fi and 3G. This is something FaceTime has yet to do. >> iPhone or iPod touch with video capabilities >> Skype Account >> Skype 3.0 from the iTunes App Store (You can update if you have an older version) To place a video call to someone using Skype, you must first

By Leanna Lofte, Monday, Jan 10, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Alli: Skype recently updated its iOS app to include the ability to video chat over 3G. While video over 3G is mediocre, video over WiFi is great. I’ve found that lately I’m using Skype on my iPhone more often than Skype on my desktop. Skype was even able to come to my rescue recently, when I had no voice or data with AT&T at the Cincinnati airport. Once the plane was at cruising altitude and

We’re talking App Store apps here, not built-in apps like Safari. For example, if I were stranded on a desert island (that just happened to have Wi-Fi and electricity to charge — you know, thanks to Dharma) these would be my must-have apps: What apps would you simply not want to live without?

It supports almost any messenger client you can think of and is completely customizable. Beejive has been making IM clients for a very long time, and it shows. I remember purchasing Beejive for my Blackberry several years ago. Even then, it was an extremely reliable choice. It comes packed with features such as support for multiple accounts, push notifications, picture sharing, custom backgrounds and chat bubbles, and much more. I have always found it to be extremely efficient

Skype for iPhone now supports video calls to Skype-enabled TVs (Download Squad)

Users of the Skype iPhone app can now install an update which enables video calling to Skype contacts on more devices, including Skype-enabled TVs. While there still aren't a ton of sets which support the popular voice and video chat app, Skype really only began sidling its way into the living room last year -- so expect more models to appear in 2011. Here's hoping that Skype hurries up and updates its Android app with video call support as well. With Qik in tow, it shouldn't be too much longer before the company invites non-iPhone users to the party. If the thought of Skype on your TV has the gears turning, head on over to their website to see available models from Panasonic and Samsung -- you can even buy one directly from Skype, along with the required webcams.

Skype for iPhone updated to support Skype for TV (The iPhone Blog)

By Andrew Wray, Wednesday, Feb 9, 2011 | The Skype app for iPhone and iPod touch has received a small update today with support for making video calls to more Skype clients, specifically Skype for TV: You can now make video calls to a wider selection of Skype clients and devices, such as Skype for TV. Skype for TV is a service Skype made available earlier last year that lets Skype users make and receive video calls from their TV using hardware from manufacturers like Panasonic and Samsung. Skype recently added video support for WiFi and 3G calls, so with this latest update it appears they’re moving faster than ever with hopes of dominating the mobile VoIP arena. Any readers out there excited for the new feature? Better yet, has anyone actually heard of Skype for TV? Let us know in the comments!

Skype has once again updated its iPhone app to allow users to video-call their buddies on Skype-compatible TVs. Unfortunately that includes only a limited number of TV sets, namely select (and pricey) models made by LG, Panasonic and Samsung. Of course, there’s also an option to buy a camera and connect it to some Internet-capable TVs to keep up with your on-the-go iFriends. The new feature is made possible thanks to the use of H.264 codec which works across platforms. In the other news, Skype acknowledged their app will work on Verizon’s just as well it did with AT&T’s version… Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry.

All of the new Verizon iPhone 4 owners who are looking for apps to install on their shiny new devices can add Skype to the list. The free Skype app has been updated today so that it functions properly on the Verizon iPhone, and the update also adds support for the H.264 codec. This support is crucial to allowing Skype users to call from their iOS devices to more Skype-enabled devices, including new TVs from Panasonic and Samsung. Of course, now that you're on the "Can You Hear Me Now?™" network, you shouldn't need to resort to Skype for your calls, should you? [via BGR]

Using smartphone for travel (IntoMobile)

A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. If you live near a major airport, you should grab the app of the

A smartphone is a powerful tool you should use on every trip, if nothing to save some cash along the way. In addition to the must-have navigation apps and local guides from the likes of Lonely Planet, there are other applications that could help you save money while travelling. Here are the apps we suggest you to try out on your next trip: Groupon You’ve probably heard about Groupon and may have also used it. The daily deals service is getting more and more users every day, despite facing a tough competition from the likes of Facebook and Google, with Nokia and Microsoft planning to join the race, too. Their mobile application is available for multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and they also have a mobile website for users of other mobile devices. To take advantage of Groupon, simply sign-up for the local version of the service (your travel destination)

The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or

If you’re planning to travel this weekend, Skype may have a nice gift for you. The popular VoIP service is offering free Wi-Fi access in select airports across the U.S. thru December 27th. More precisely, a free hour of Internet access will be available in more than 50 airports using Skype WiFi. To get started make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of Skype for Windows or Skype for Mac, or have downloaded the Skype WiFi app on your iOS device. Once you’ve signed in with a valid Skype ID, check your wireless network connection to see if you are in a supported hotspot. It’s that simple. You can see the list of airports from this page at Skype’s website and learn more about Skype WiFi from here. Hopefully it will soon be available for other mobile devices, not just those made by Apple… Finally, Skype encourages its users to tweet

One accessory category that always seems to stir up reader interest is wireless webcams. We've seen our share of them over the last year: the Stem Innovations iZon (US$129.95), the iBaby Monitor ($199.95), and the WiFi Baby 3G ($279) among others. Lorex, a manufacturer of a number of security cameras, has joined the fray with the $299.99 LW2031 Live Connect Home Video Monitoring System. What makes this system so different from any other webcam I've reviewed recently is its integration with Skype. You actually set up a Skype account for the webcam, and then make a call to that account to view your webcam feed. Most other webcams either have a way to be viewed directly through an app or have a website that you can visit to see your feed. Using Skype as an intermediary is quite smart -- many people already use the app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and

Skype for iOS updated with new interface and bug fixes (iPhone Download Blog)

Skype is one of the best tools to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. It allows you to easily send messages and call people for free. Skype’s iOS app also makes it even easier to communicate on the go. Today, the Skype crew has released a welcomed update for their iOS app, that includes a new interface and a slew of bug fixes, in version 3.7: Updated chat and dialpad viewsVarious bug fixesStability improvements for iOS 5 Included in the update are new chat windows, which are much more appealing than the older versions. But, perhaps what we welcome most is the bug and stability fixes the Skype crew has rolled out. Upon first launching the app, it feels much more fluid. Verison 3.7 also brings stability improvements for iOS 5. You can download Skype for free, for both the iPhone and iPad, on the iTunes App Store.

Skype 4.0 for iOS Released With Enhanced User Interface and More (ModMyi.com)

Ever since a number of recent updates to the mobile iOS Skype application, it has been widely regarded as, "unstable" and, "unusable." This was due to the application’s extremely slow response speeds and buggy interface. For many, the application would simply crash upon startup or loading would be so slow the user would rather hop on their computer to use Skype. Today, a new version of Skype for iOS (4.0) comes to the plate to try and make the application better. With improved stability, an enhanced user interface (UI), and some more awesome features added, Skype for iOS may finally be tolerable for its users. One of the main new features, however, is the ability to move around your own video preview while you are in the middle of a Skype video call with someone, similarly to how you can move your FaceTime video preview while in a FaceTime call.
Skype for iPad 4.0 offers new video preview option, crash recovery (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Skype has released version 4.0 of its app for iPad and iPhone (both free). There are a few nice changes this time around. The app now lets you pre-position your video preview as you like. It also restarts automatically after an "unexpected shutdown." That's "crash" to you and me. Skype also states that accessibility and overall stability have been improved, along with some minor UI improvements and bug fixes. The change log is the same for both apps. Go get it and start chatting.

Skype for iOS 4.0 adds stability, UI improvements (IntoMobile)

On the heels of the recently updated Android app, Skype launched a new version of its iOS app. Since it’s version 4.0, we would expect a number of changes; however, that’s not the case here, with this release rather including many under-the-hood bug fixes. Here’s what’s new: Again, I’m not sure why go for version 4.0 when you only have one new feature. Guess folks as Microsoft Skype think differently… Needless to say, you should update right now. Or if for some reason you still don’t have Skype running on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch – get it now. It’s definitely one of those must-have apps… Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is
