SlingPlayer Mobile now available for the iPhone (iPhones Talk)

After many weeks of anticipation SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone has now finally been released. The good news is that despite claims from Sling Media telling us you would need to upgrade your Slingbox to work with the new iPhone app, it will work with older Slingboxes such as the Slingbox Classic although Sling Media will not support these. The bad news is SlingPlayer Mobile currently works on a Wi-Fi connection only. No 3G connections! At $30 the SlingPlayer mobile app is not cheap but on initial testing the quality does look very good on the iPhone’s small 3.5 inch screen. Below is a screenshot from BBC news this morning. One disappointing thing was the image didn’t fill the whole screen. Whether this is because we were connected to a Slingbox Classic we don’t know. Anyone tried this yet with a Slingbox Solo or PRO? Application Description Watch and control your

How To Use SlingPlayer Over 3G (iPhone Download Blog)

Since the release of the SlingPlayer iPhone app in the App Store yesterday, there’s been much noise about AT&T’s restriction that makes the app operational over wifi only. But as usual, the jailbreak community is here to save the day! If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone yet, here is reason #1,563,982 to do it… Thanks to VoIPover3G, you will now be able to use the SlingPlayer app over 3G and Edge. VoIPover3G can trick any application into thinking that it is on Wifi even though it is on a cellular data connection. You can configure what apps get tricked by adding the app’s bundle identifier to “/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist”. In order to use this simple hack, your iPhone must be jailbroken (see quickpwn tutorials) and you must install Mobile Substrate, OpenSSH and VoIPover3G (reboot after install) from Cydia. Assuming you’ve installed these apps and that you know how to SSH into your iPhone,

First look at SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

This is a painful review to write, because the SlingPlayer for iPhone had so much potential before AT&T decided to cripple it. One can understand the terror at the thought of a million SlingPlayers draining network bandwidth dry, but in fact, AT&T seems to be violating its own Terms of Service by allowing other smartphones to run SlingPlayer without interference. OK, so how does the SlingPlayer [App Store link] for iPhone/iPod touch work on a WiFi network? Pretty well. The video can be a bit choppy, but it is quite watchable, and basically gives you a full-featured television receiver (or DVD player if you are set up that way) wherever you have an accessible network. Set up is pretty easy and does not require a manual. The only pain point is inputting your unique Sling ID which requires typing long strings of upper case letters followed by numbers. This can be

Tricker ThreeG is a mod that allows the SlingPlayer Mobile application (available via the App Store for $29.99) to work on not only WiFi but also on 3G. It is not very often that I write about an application/mod/hack that I cannot test but, I know that allowing SlingPlayer Mobile to work on 3G is something a lot of people want. If you you own a SB, have purchased the SlingPlay Mobile application and have installed this hack…let us know how it is working for you! It would be pretty sweet if it actually works. The Tricker ThreeG apps also says that it works with Skype and Fring. You can get it via the modmyi source.

05.14.09 App Score: 7/10 The long-awaited for Sling Media’s SOLO, PRO and PRO-HD TV set-top boxes finally made its grand appearance in the App Store on Wednesday. If you aren’t an owner of one of Sling Media’s set-top boxes, here’s what they do: Plug in your Sling Media black box into your cable or satellite box and you can “sling” your TV programming to your desktop or laptop from anywhere there’s an Internet connection. With Slingmedia’s software installed on your desk or lap machine, you can control your cable or sat box — change channels, pause and do everything else your home remote can do. If you have a DVR, you can record and playback programs from anywhere. There’s no additional monthly fee either.
AT&T Crippled SlingPlayer To Kill Competition? (ModMyi.com)

We already know that AT&T prevented Apple from approving SlingPlayer before and was the main culprit in restricting it to Wi-Fi ONLY. Their recent statement proclaims the restrictions to be a modest way to prevent the network from collapsing. Well, most people trust them because of obvious reasons, but it seems to be the incomplete truth! As per a tipster, AT&T's been working on it's OWN application named "i-verse" that performs similar task as SlingPlayer. This app works with their U-verse TV solution (like slingbox) and loads the "DVRed" shows onto your iPhone at home or stream them over internet on 3G network! The app has already been demoed privately last year and since then, AT&T's into developing it. Currently SlingPlayer is the #9 app on the US AppStore even though it is Wi-Fi only, imagine what wonders would a 3G version do! Of course there are alternatives for people with

May 15 iPhone News 4:00 pm (0) Comments On Wednesday, after what seemed to be forever in the techworld, Sling Media’s SlingPlayer appeared in the iTunes AppStore. And, although the hotly anticipated app does allows users to watch TV over the internet, it does come at a heavy cost to the network and the wallet. First off, before we go into details on what exactly this application will allow you to do, let’s discuss some of the caveats of this long-awaited application. The BIGGEST limitation of this application stems from the fact that it can only be used on a WiFI network…In other words, you won’t be able to access your slingbox from the EDGE or 3G network. This really really unusual because AT&T allows other smartphones (ie. Blackberry, WinMo) to have this functionality. AT&T is claiming that the iPhone is different from other smartphones because it is like a

Did Sling Media Already Make Over $200,000 From SlingPlayer Mobile? (Apple iPhone Apps)

SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone has been discussed and dissected more than any other application at the App Store in recent memory, and for good reason. SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone was in development for what seemed like an eternity, Sling Media then announced that the application would only support new models of their popular Slingbox, only to go back on that statement and tie in limited support for legacy devices, and finally the application got stuck in App Store limbo due to its use of 3G, which had to be removed before it could be released only a few days ago. With all of this attention, one would expect the application to sell well, but at the high price of $29.99, how well could it really do? To answer that question, surprisingly well. The application launched on May 13th at the App Store at the price of $29.99. SlingPlayer Mobile

As a former SlingPlayer user on my Windows Mobile Samsung i730 and i760, I was anxiously awaiting the release of the live television streaming application for the iPhone. For nearly a year now, I have been without the live feed of my Slingbox (recently upgraded to a SB Solo due to a change in cable service) on my mobile phone. There have been a few wedding receptions, baby showers, and dull meetings where I could have benefited from catching some live sports coverage on my iPhone. After months of rumors leading up to the eventual release in the App Store this past Wednesday, the moment has finally arrived. Thanks to Brooke and the folks at Sling Media, I got a chance to play with the pricey app on my iPhone. Now, let’s get this out there right away: SlingPlayer only works on WiFi. No 3G, no EDGE, only WiFi. You can

It's bad enough that Sling Media charges $29.99 for its SlingPlayer Mobile app (which you can see demonstrated in the video at right), but limiting it to Wi-Fi connections? That's downright criminal. Fortunately, the gadget gurus over at Gizmodo have documented a way to stream SlingPlayer video across 3G connections, thereby overcoming one of the app's major annoyances. (Now if they could just talk Sling Media into a reasonable price tag. Like, say, $5.99.) As you might expect, there's a catch: You have to jailbreak your iPhone. It's not hard to do, particularly if you follow Gizmodo's iPhone jailbreaking guide, but it's definitely a do-at-your-own-risk procedure. (Fortunately, you can undo it if the need ever arises, like for support or warranty service from Apple.) Once you've completed that step, all that's left is to install an app called Tricker Three3G. After that, SlingPlayer will always think it's running on Wi-Fi, even

Citing an exclusive source from within AT&T, appmodo reports that "tethering support is coming later this summer" is AT&T-speak for "tethering support is coming at the end of July." It won't be coming cheaply, however; appmodo's source says a tethering option will cost AT&T customers a whopping $55 a month. While this is cheaper than the $70 rumor that's been making the rounds, it still strikes me as ridiculous that AT&T is charging additional money for this option in the first place. Considering their "unlimited" data plan is reportedly only unlimited until you reach 5 GB or so in any given month, it seems preposterous for AT&T to charge their customers an extra fee to use the iPhone to access the internet via tethering. But, since AT&T's wrangling caused Skype to be restricted to WiFi only and SlingPlayer Mobile to be almost totally crippled compared to the same software on different

There are at least 27 Netflix related iPhone apps according to Macworld. Their purposes differ but most of them are designed to let you manage your movie queue. A new player is about to enter the arena: Netflix itself, who intends to bring "Watch Instantly" video streaming to the iPhone/iPod touch and the Nintendo Wii. At present Netflix streams over 12,000 movies and TV shows over a large variety of devices including Intel-based Macs. Todd Spangler of Mutichannel.com speculates, and I agree with him totally, that when released, streaming will be limited to Wi-Fi only. This is not because there's any technical reason not to stream over the AT&T 3G network, but like the SlingPlayer Mobile app, streaming will probably be hobbled to prevent massive data overloading of the AT&T network. This being the case, I wonder why Apple/AT&T allowed streaming of full baseball games using the MLB.com At Bat 2009

Sling Media’s SlingPlayer Mobile kind of disappeared from the limelight after the controversy surrounding the lack of 3G and EDGE support died down. Now SlingPlayer Mobile is set to receive its first update since that whole fiasco, but will it be enough to warrant a second look?
I apologize for dropping off the face of the Earth on Hidden Gems the last couple weeks, but now I’m back, and have some great apps to share! This app premiered for free and then quickly jumped up to 99 cents. It was a steal at free and in my opinion worth a dollar. It’s the perfect example of an app not possible pre-OS 3.0. Face The Music lets you play any of the music from your music library and then share what you’re listening to on Twitter or Facebook. It works very well and plays the music from the iPod on your iPhone or iPod Touch, so even if you close the app, it keeps playing. Likewise, if you play a song using the iPod and want to share it, just pop over to Face The Music and you’re ready to share. There are other services that are similar to

Earlier in the month we reported that SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPod touch would be receiving its very first update. That update has officially made it through Apple’s approval process and is now available in the App Store. We have also been informed that there was a little confusion regarding 3G support for the rest of the world. It was initially reported by Boy Genius Report that Sling Media had submitted a different build of the app that would allow now-U.S. users to access content over 3G. Apparently that wasn’t exactly true. According to Sling Media, that update was already submitted, but as a different version. Sling Media has yet to hear

Version 1.1 of SlingPlayer Mobile was just approved by Apple and is now available in the App Store. the update does contain some new features (see list below) but still does not allow the app to work on 3G. The developers have submitted a version of the app that does allow it to work on 3G however, they have not heard back from Apple on that version of the app yet. See THIS post for a full review of the SlingPlayer Mobile application. New Features: - Full 16×9 widescreen support (Slingbox SOLO, PRO and PRO-HD only) - DISH Remote Access integration (DISH Network users only) - Faster start and channel change - Improved remote control interface

Quick App Update: SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1 for iPhone - Still Wi-Fi Only (The iPhone Blog)

By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Aug 21, 2009 | SlingPlayer Mobile [$29.99 - iTunes Store] brings a few news features to everyone’s favorite video transporter: Thanks to AT&T’s targeted terms of service, however, which specifically forbids SlingPlayer over 3G, you’re still constrained to Wi-Fi (as is everyone on every other network outside AT&T, though Sling has apparently submitted a 3G version for App Stores outside the US — no word on it from Apple yet, however). If you give the update a go, let us know how it works for you. [Thanks Robert for the tip!]

Elgato, maker of EyeTV, has released EyeTV for iPhone [iTunes Link], an app that allows access to both live and recorded video content from any Mac running EyeTV 3.2 or later. The $4.99 app lets you view live and recorded TV on your iPhone or iPod touch over your local network, and it also allows you to access the same content from a remote WiFi location using a service called MyEyeTV. Unsurprisingly, just like SlingPlayer, access over 3G isn't possible. Accessing either live or recorded TV over your local network is simple, and usually works well. Recorded content plays back almost immediately with barely a stutter to be seen -- the caveat to this is that all recorded content has to be rendered into a format the iPhone will understand, which can take a while if you have a slower Mac. Live TV takes longer to load on your iPhone and

And The Skies Fell: AT&T Allows 3G SlingPlayer Streaming! (Mac|Life)

Posted 02/04/2010 at 6:25am | by J.R. Bookwalter (Image courtesy of Engadget) The tech world seems to be getting more topsy-turvy every minute -- with both AT&T and Apple finally allowing VoIP calls via a 3G data connection, where will the madness end? Prepare to have your minds blown! We never thought we’d see this day come, but Engadget is reporting that AT&T has finally blessed SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone over a 3G connection. As you’ll recall, the app made its debut last year in a very controversial firestorm, thanks to AT&T and Apple forcing the Sling folks to stream via Wi-Fi only -- while other devices on the same network were happily streaming via 3G. Apparently once the first brick or two fell -- that being VoIP over 3G, of course -- it’s not going to take long for the others to crumble as well. So what brought about

AT&T Allows SlingPlayer To Run Over 3G Network (iPhone Alley)

AT&T announced today that they will now be allowing SlingPlayer Mobile [App Store, $29.99], and application for streaming TV to your iPhone to watch wherever you are, to run over the 3G network. The app was disabled over the 3G network due to bandwidth concerns and how it would effect the overall quality of the network, but now they say the code has been “optimized” which most likely means the developers had to change it to fit their bandwidth guidelines. AT&T says they have notified both Sling and Apple, so now the ball is in their court. We don’t know why AT&T has decided to work with Sling to get the app working on their network. One possibility is that the FCC may have stepped in and asked them to treat Slingplayer the same way they would treat other high-bandwidth apps.

AT&T will now allow SlingPlayer to stream video to the iPhone over their 3G network. It’s not just a quick decision either. AT&T and Sling Media have worked together to make the app conserve bandwith when connected to 3G: Collaboration with developers like Sling Media ensures that all apps are optimized for our 3G network to conserve wireless spectrum and reduce the risk that an app will cause such extreme levels of congestion that they disrupt the experience of other wireless customers. Even more good news is AT&T will begin to work with developers starting by the end of the first quarter to optimize their videos and applications for the wireless network on their developer website: http://developer.att.com/ This is all great news for the iPad. Sling Media could create an awesome interface with the larger screen of the iPad and AT&T will allow the app to run on their network.

We all knew it was coming, and it's here. Yes, Apple has finally approved, with the belated blessing of AT&T, a version of the SlingPlayer Mobile app that now works on the 3G network. The original release of SlingPlayer Mobile [iTunes link] was WiFi only, and was one of the great disappointments of the whole iPhone experience. The folks at Sling Media worked hard to get the app approved, and AT&T finally relented, probably because the FCC has been breathing down the necks of the cellular providers who seem a bit, shall we say, arbitrary about what gets on the network. AT&T had no problem with streaming MLB games, but kept giving the Sling developers a big honking rejection. Whatever the reason, it's good to see the SlingPlayer app working as it was designed. I just ran out to the front yard to test it and it worked as advertised. I

SlingPlayer Mobile Updated Allows Streaming Over 3G (Apple iPhone School)

SlingPlayer Mobile, an application that allows you to “watch and control your home TV and DVR on your iPhone or iPod touch,” was updated today to version 1.2. The update does one thing, it adds the long awaited feature of streaming over 3G! YAY! MacRumors is reporting that Sling Media has made the announcement that its iPhone-loving users have been waiting for: SlingPlayer Mobile has finally been updated to allow streaming over AT&T’s 3G network in addition to the Wi-Fi capabilities the app was already capable of. “We’re delighted the SlingPlayer Mobile App now has 3G capability,” said John Gilmore, Sling Media’s senior vice president and general manager. “Slingbox users in many countries around the globe, including the United States, can now enjoy their living room TV experience on their iPhone and iPod touch whether on a 3G or WiFi network.” The fact that the iPhone app was crippled at all has

At long last, Sling Media has released the 3G-capable version of their TV streaming application, SlingPlayer Mobile [App Store, $29.99], to the App Store. The new version is able to stream video from your TV connection at home to your iPhone, and now instead of being restricted to working over Wi-Fi only, it will stream on AT&T’s 3G network as well. The release is following AT&T’s lift on a ban on the 3G-capable version of the application, which they initially put in place over concerns about it taking too much traffic for the network to handle. “We’re delighted the SlingPlayer Mobile App now has 3G capability,” said John Gilmore, senior vice president and general manager at Sling Media. “Slingbox users in many countries around the globe, including the United States, can now enjoy their living room TV experience on their iPhone and iPod touch whether on a 3G or WiFi network.”

SlingPlayer Now Officially Enabled on 3G! (ModMyi.com)

Today, Apple finally approved the 3G-streaming capable version of the popular TV-streaming iPhone application, SlingPlayer [iTunes link]. As most of us know, Sling, Apple, and AT&T and previously tussled over the concept of streaming live TV over AT&T's 3G bands, as they had suspected that it would place to much strain on the network, especially with the popularity of the iPhone. However, just like their recent lift on the VoIP ban, which AT&T anticipated would keep people from using their AT&T minutes by using a service like Skype to make calls instead, AT&T seem to have lifted this "live TV streaming" ban as well. Until now, only jailbreakers who had paid for a premium app such as 3G Unrestrictor or My3G were able to stream Sling over the 3G airwaves, but it looks like today, everyone is free to watch Sling on their iPhone at their leisure.

SlingPlayer Coming To iPad (Apple iPhone Apps)

Fans of the Slingbox have been evangelizing its cool usefulness and amazing streaming technology to bring your own television content on the go wherever you are. It’s been on my list of killer iPhone apps to show to friends, especially with AT&T’s recent decision to allow for 3G streaming. With the iPad’s launch just days away, details are emerging on an iPad specific version of the SlingPlayer app. According to Dave Zatz over on his ZatzNotFunny site, word out of Sling Media is that the company is looking to move their video stream technology to iPhone OS friendly H.264 platform. While it is safe to assume the current SlingPlayer for iPhone will work fine on the new iPad, to be able to take full advantage of the new tablet’s gorgeous high resolution display, a native application will be needed. To accommodate the iPad’s bigger screen, here’s what Sling had to say:

Review: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone & iPad (Buy Me An iPhone)

Rating: 9 out of 10Pros: Gives you the ability to watch your home programming on the road, never miss another big game, one app will work with both iPhone and iPad although the app is not marketed that way.Cons: Expensive; with the needed purchase of a Silngbox Solo box I would expect a lower priced app.Overall: The SlingPlayer Mobile app is a fantastic add on to your SlingBox as it enable you to watch your home programming without the need of your computer. This app is a solid performer on both Wifi and 3G and will always keep you up to date on that important game or TV show when you are on the road. No longer do husbands have to stress when on those shopping trips; just fire up your iPhone or iPad. I would prefer to see a lower price point on this app considering the initial investment of

Netflix app hits the iPhone and iPod touch (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Here's some great news for Netflix subscribers. The free Netflix app has finally made it to the iPhone and iPod touch. Netflix members on plans as low as US$8.99 a month can instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed from the Netflix servers. This has been an eagerly-awaited app (the iPad version was available at launch), and I downloaded it this morning to give it a test. It works fine on both 3G and WiFi, and the 3G feature is a bit of a surprise given AT&T's position of holding back on some streaming apps. Slingbox, for example, found dealing with AT&T tough sledding, but the company finally did get the app approved for 3G. My TUAW colleague Richard Gaywood points out that with many AT&T users no longer on unlimited data plans, the company may see apps like this as a profit center. The new Hulu Plus app also works

SlingPlayer for iPad delivers all kinds of television to Apple's tablet (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Sling Media has posted a preview video of their upcoming iPad app, and you can watch it in action right after the break below. It looks pretty darn good -- the app of course allows you to stream everything that comes from your Slingbox DVR device, including live TV, DVR'd content, or any on-demand offerings you might happen to have. The iPad app uses Apple's own H.264 codec, so while this is just a video demonstration, presumably the real thing will look just as good. Unfortunately, this won't be the cheapest option -- the app isn't universal at all, so you'll have to pay another $30 on top of the $30 you may have already paid for the iPhone version. And that's after you buy and install a Slingbox in the first place, which itself requires yet another television subscription to actually deliver the content. Compared to a more subscription-based service

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Hits 2.0 with High Quality Video Streaming (Mac|Life)

Posted 12/14/2010 at 5:33am | by J.R. Bookwalter Sure, the folks at Sling finally have an iPad version of SlingPlayer Mobile waiting in the App Store to gobble up your $29.99, but that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten their original iPhone version, which has just hit version 2.0. Engadget is reporting that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 is now available in the App Store, bringing High Quality (HQ) streaming and a new program guide to the table for new and existing users alike. “To stream in High Quality (HQ) mode outside your home, you need at least 800 kbps of bandwidth from your Slingbox to your iPhone when using a Wi-Fi connection, and at least 500 kbps with a 3G connection,” the 2.0 update notes read. “If you don't have enough bandwidth for HQ mode, you can improve your viewing experience by pressing the SQ button to stream in

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone gets 2.0 update, brings High Quality video streaming (Appletell)

Sling Media has roll-out what appears to be a welcomed update for the SlingPlayer Mobile app on the iPhone. The app is now sitting at version 2.0 and noted as having additional features to include High Quality (HQ) video streaming, though in order to take advantage you will need to be on a Wi-Fi connection of at least 800kbps or a 3G connection of at least 500kbps. In addition to the better video, SlingPlayer Mobile users on the iPhone can also expect to find the new guide (the one that the iPad users have). With that, the update will still work with both the Slingbox SOLO and/or Slingbox Pro-HD models however you will need to update the software on the box in addition to the app on your phone before you will be able to connect (for more details on that, hit the ‘download’ link below).

SlingPlayer Mobile and SlingPlayer for iPad Review (Mac|Life)

Posted 01/31/2011 at 11:48am | by Zack Stern Get your actual living-room shows anywhere; SlingPlayer Mobile presents content from your personal TiVo, cable-tuner, and other devices online. The iPhone and iPad apps connect to your Slingbox hardware ($179-$299), streaming home content anywhere, even over the 3G network. The process looks terrific on a local network; stream to the kitchen, bedroom, or bathroom. (Yeah, we went there.) Quality outside your house depends on your Internet connections, especially your home upstream. In slower situations, the audio gets fuzzy, but remains understandable, while the picture splashes on like a rushed sketch. Fast-paced sports suffer, but paced, dramatic shows lose little. The bottom line. Since everything looks great when functional, we can overlook setup problems, showing the same-resolution picture on the iPhone 4, and how Sling offers two apps instead of a universal purchase. Product Company Sling Media Contact Price $29.99 each Requirements iOS 4.1

Dig out your TV component cables if you have the SlingPlayer Mobile app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod -- the latest version of the software now supports high quality mode video out to your television. Version 2.1 of the popular TV-streaming app also includes a few unspecified bug fixes. You'll need at least 800 Kbps of bandwidth over Wi-Fi or 500 Kbps over 3G for it to work on your iPhone 4, or 1200 and 800 respectively on your iPad. There goes the weekend...
