Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. [Note: all app links will open the iTunes App Store] I'm happy to see that Apple is maintaining focus on the number and variety of apps in the App Store, instead of resorting to the narcissistic, touchy-feely, celebrity-filled tripe that T-Mobile has been

Here Are More Apps for That: Three New iPhone Commercials From Apple (TheAppleBlog)

It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. New York Subway 09 ($4.99) — Navigate the labyrinth

The App Store Effect: Are iPhone Apps Headed for Oblivion? [IPhone Apps] (Gizmodo)

It's uncanny. When known software gets repackaged for iPhones and iPod Touches and passes through the hallowed gates of the App Store, something happens: Almost invariably, it gets cheaper. Waaay cheaper. Good right? Well, not always. The App Store is a strange new place for developers. Veterans and newcomers engage in bareknuckle combat, driving prices down to levels people wouldn't have imagined charging just a few years ago. Margins drop to razor-thin levels while customers expect apps to get cheaper and cheaper, but with ever increasing quality and depth. For developers, for other software platforms and potentially for the increasingly fickle customers themselves, it's uncharted, and treacherous, territory. But the most bizarre thing of all is—in an effort to keep people in the App Store, and to prevent competitors from getting a toehold in the mobile app business—Apple's charting a course straight into it. "The App Store is a very competitive

ZAGAT TO GO is in the version 3.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch users. Developed in partnership with Handmark, the update app comes with an “augmented reality twist,” while at the same time keeping its core feature – providing diners with useful information about restaurants. In addition, there’s the new offline sync feature that allows users to pre-download some of the content and read it in places where there is no 3G or WiFi connection around. Moreover, ZAGAT TO GO 3.0 enables users to write and publish reviews directly to ZAGAT.com from their phone. Finally the company proudly added that the latest version of their app sings along the iPad, though we think even the earlier version(s) will do the work just fine. Real hungry. Some hunger is conquered by Chipotle, but this hunger is only has one weakness, and it is good, local food. Fortunately for all of us in the same situation, there are plenty of apps for that. Here are the four best, brought to you by the never ending hunger of Chris Hall. 4. Yelp – I really like Yelp when I’m looking for a place to eat. Because of its vast user base, the Yelp app provides more restaurants per search than any other app I’ve found. There are also more customer review on Yelp than any other service, so if you believe that more is better, Yelp is for you. The problem with Yelp

The Best iOS 4-Ready Apps So Far (TechCrunch)

We all know that the iPhone 4 launches this coming Thursday. But on Monday, current iPhone users get an early treat in the form of iOS 4, the new iPhone operating system (formerly known as iPhone OS 4). It comes with several enhancements, but the ones people seem most excited about involve multitasking (or background tasks). A little over a week ago, Apple began urging developers to submit their iOS 4-ready app, and a number of them have. And actually, some have already been approved, or will be shortly. The component that all of these apps share is the ability to do fast app switching. What you may traditionally think of as multitasking isn’t the same on iOS 4. Multiple apps aren’t running all of their functions in the background at once — obviously, this would take up resources and eat up battery life. Instead, Apple allows third-party apps to do

Zagat for iPhone Adds Foursquare Check-ins, Foodspotting Pictures (IntoMobile)

Zagat’s iPhone application for finding and reviewing restaurants has updated to include Foursquare check-in options and pictures of dishes submitted to the Foodspotting social network. There’s also a new Dining Journal, which lets you keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve had. This is all on top of the standard Zagat to Go app, which hosts reviews, phone numbers, and maps to restaurants, all viewable in a standard list or through augmented reality, even when you’re offline. Plugging in to Foursquare is a smooth move for people who are prone to sharing where they are anyway and are big on eating out. I had actually never heard of Foodspotting before this, and taking a look around the site, I’m reminded of the few times I would innocuously tweet some striking foodpr0n. The “nom” rating system is especially cute. Overall, it sounds like Zagat to Go is a must-have for

If you haven’t looked at your iCal recently, we’re less than a week away from Valentine’s Day. If you haven’t made your dining plans yet, time’s running out. Pull out your iPhone, and let’s look at apps that will help you with your culinary plans. Zagat is one of the best-known sources for finding the best restaurant for any special night. Zagat’s printed guide is what your parents or grandparents used before they had the Internet, and initially I was skeptical of an iPhone app based on such an outdated and analog approach. However, I’m glad I took a look. Zagat to Go ($9.99) is perfect for finding a great place to eat. Restaurants are ranked on a 0-30 scale based on food, decor and service. Each entry includes key data about the restaurant such as price, location and features, and when applicable, the website and a link to OpenTable to make

A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. If you live near a major airport, you should grab the app of the
