AP Stylebook for iPhone vs online subscription
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Jul 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
As someone who cares about words, I have been considering signing up for the AP Stylebook Online ($25/year, all prices listed are USD) or buying the AP Stylebook for iPhone ($24.99) but had trouble deciding which one would be the better deal. You can also pick up a printed version of the 2010 stylebook at the AP website for $18.95. (The 2009 version is available on Amazon.com for $12.89, but the 2010 stylebook is not yet available on Amazon.com as of this writing). I contacted the folks at AP and asked if I might be able to review the iPhone app and get a trial for the AP Online to compare them on the iPhone and iPad. The quick and dirty summary is: if you want access to the AP information on your iPhone frequently, without having to rely on the availability of an Internet connection, get the iPhone app. For Read More

2010 AP Stylebook hits the AppStore
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Jun 2010 10:40:45 UTC +00:00
Associated Press is out with the 2010 AP Stylebook, which they tout as the essential tool for writers, editors, students and public relations professionals. Just like that was the case last year, this time the guide is available as an iPhone app, in addition to the old-school spiral-bound edition. The dedicated app provides fundamental guidelines for spelling, language, punctuation, usage and journalistic style, as well as new rules for how journalists should use social media. There’s also the enhanced search functionality (when compared to the last year’s version), pinch and zoom capabilities, faster page loading and live links to websites for real-time information. Among the new terms included are such popular social media phrases as “hashtag,” “mashup”, “retweet,” “unfriend,” and “crowdsourcing.” Furthermore, there other novelties like the change from “Web site” to “website,” the addition of “mic” as the shortened form for “microphone” and some polical phrases like “Great Recession” and Read More
AP Stylebook comes to the App Store
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Sep 30th 2009 at 3:00PM It's like the AP put up a giant billboard: "YUP -- WE STILL THINK THIS WHOLE 21ST CENTURY THING IS JUST A FAD" Considering that the Associated Press was one of the launch partners for the debut of the App Store in 2008, your comment seems pretty off-base. The AP, of all organizations, should realize how little most writers make. $28 is a bit rich; writers are not. I'd love to have this on my iPhone but I'll stick to the book until the price becomes realistic The interesting thing here is that the app says that those who buy the 2009 AP Stylebook will receive the 2010 application for free. I'll be curious to see how they handle a free upgrade, since it's the type of thing that the App Store is not designed to support. They're kidding if they think this pricing will entice Read More

Way to go. A must have for Journalists! Out goes my Stylebook.

Its fascinating to see digital journo landscape shaping up. Worth every penny. Love the notes feature and the ability to add my own words. Faster than the dictionary app. A must have for journalists. If you don't have an iPhone, go buy one to use this app.
Thank you!

I'm a copy editor, and having the AP guide on my iPhone is almost too good to be true. This app is exactly what I needed. Thanks! Now, if only you could fix up the AP exchange Web Site ...
Nice to have

As an educator this is a handy app to have at my fingertips.
A must for reporters on the go

As a reporter that focuses on online content, this app is everything I need. It's not practical to have a copy of of the stylebook with me at a school board meeting, or a convention- where i am posting live news stories to our web. This app is quick and it functions perfectly. The feature that allows you to input your own entries is key also. Our paper has some specific style items which makes it great for quick reference.
Not at all what I expected
Anonymous41909 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was expecting a style guide along the lines of "Elements of Style" or something with a much broader treatment of grammar and sentence structure. I work in an environment where I have to quickly produce high quality decision papers or short emails that convey a lot of complex information in a very concise form (similar to news writers I would think). While this includes some helpful direction on punctuation, the bulk of it seems to be little more than a mini-dictionary. Some of the entries do not contain any substance. Not entirely useless, except that I already have a dictionary and a wikipedia app. Not for me, and very disappointed that I dropped $30. If I find myself using this more frequently (though I've turned to it several times now only to be let down), or realize that I've been using it incorrectly, I will certainly update this review.
Very handy

Prompt answers to all of your editing questions. As an editor, I can say this is truly a home run. Indispensable reference to anyone that really cares about the quality of their writing.
Stylebook App Shines
CG03026 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
For the reviewer that didn't get what was expected I can understand the reaction. But it then can only be the case that he/she has never seen the printed Stylebook. The iPhone App is a terrific incarnation of this AP "Bible" of many years. Kudos to AP. Expensive but worth every penny. It would be nice if purchasers of this App could for free be members of AP's full blown online "Ask the Editor," instead of ponying up another $25 annually for that. But either way AP is on track with these new offerings!
Too expensive for content that is lacking
BoLaw 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am a writer and an editor. This app fails to provide the requisite style and usage tools necessary for my work and craft. It lacks scope, it lacks basic usage information (where is the em dash, or the en dash?) and it is oftentimes incorrect. At most, it is worth one-third of what I paid. Even at that price, however, I would be disappointed in its offering.
