'Archetype Cadet' Offers A Free Trial of Online FPS Action
Calendar16 Wed, 11 May 2011 13:45:55 UTC +00:00
Released in July of last year, Villain’s Archetype [99¢] was easily the most robust online first-person shooter available on the App Store at the time. It featured smooth Team Deathmatch multiplayer for up to 10 players over WiFi, 3G, or EDGE connections. We really liked the game in our review, and in the months following release Archetype received several updates adding Capture the Flag and Free For All modes, new maps and game types, and loads of other enhancements. An iPad native version, Archetype HD [$2.99], was released as well. While other FPS games have since offered similarly impressive online multiplayer functionality, Archetype has remained a popular choice among fraggers on the go. Now you can test drive the game for free with the recently released Archetype Cadet [Free/HD]. Archetype Cadet gives you access to 5-on-5 Team Deathmatch on 2 available maps, Invidia and Pride Rocket Arena. Check out our gameplay Read More
Archetype goes free with Archetype Cadet

Archetype is a solid first-person shooter for the iPhone that didn't really get a fair shake when it came out. It was popular enough, but the US$2.99 purchase price probably kept a few more people away than should have played it. Developer Villain is aiming to fix that; the company has released a version called Archetype Cadet, and it's now a free download on the App Store. The free version doesn't allow you to pick up ranks or achievements, and there are ads to deal with (though they're not too intrusive), but it will let you check out the Archetype experience without investing any money. The full app is still available, and it's just been updated recently with even more fixes to run even smoother on the iPhone and iPad. If you're one of the players who've been passing on Archetype just because of the price, definitely grab the free version Read More
2010 App Rewind: Apple's Top Apps of 2010
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Dec 2010 18:45:00 UTC +00:00
Apple has compiled a list called their 2010 Rewind. In it, they have named the top Apps of the year, and gathered them all up into one page so that they can easily be found. Let’s take a look at their top Apps in each category. On this list, you will find Apple’s best apps of 2010. Everything from best iPhone games of 2010 to best educational apps of 2010. Note that these are not our picks (though many of our favorites did make the list) but it’s a compilation of Apple’s favorite Apps of the 2010. Let’s take a look at Apple’s iTunes 2010 rewind: Shoot, Edit, Share – Best of iPhone Camera Utility Apps of 2010 1) Hipstamatic – 99 cents      2) Path – Free 3) Instagram – Free 4) Pocketbooth – 99 cents 5) iMovie – $4.99      6) Splice – Video Editor – 99 cents 7) Read More
Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Dec 2010 10:35:56 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich innerhalb der Ordner folgende Apps*: Amazon.de (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Convertbot (1.59 €; App Store-Link), AnalyticsPro (5.49 €; App Store-Link), Delivery Status touch (3.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), Dropbox (kostenlos; universal; App Store-Link), iCabMobile (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Skype (kostenlos; App Store-Link), WeatherPro (2.99 €; App Store-Link), Pastebot (2.99 €; App Store-Link), LogMeIn (23.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), OffMaps (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Kik (kostenlos; App Store-Link), PayPal (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Linkie (0.79 Read More
'Archetype HD' – An Awesome Online FPS, Now for the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Aug 2010 18:28:43 UTC +00:00
Early last month, Villain's Archetype [$2.99] hit the App Store, and we thought it was great in our review. Archetype is an incredibly impressive game, providing 5 on 5 team-based deathmach that works well regardless of if you're connecting via WiFi or 3G/EDGE. The new iPad version plays the same, with graphics and controls that have been optimized for the large screen of the device. Archetype HD [$4.99] comes with all the same maps and game modes from the iPhone game, including the new rocket arena mode and Avarice map that dropped not long ago in an update. You can even play with people who are playing the game on their iPod touch or iPhone. It's a bit of a bummer that Archetype wasn't just updated to be universal, but if you've been enjoying the iPhone game, the iPad version is worth picking up as well as it controls a lot Read More
The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Aug 2010 18:12:54 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that Read More
If you're like us and have way more apps in your iTunes library than you can manage without a dedicated personal assistant on the job (Ahh, first world problems truly are the worst.) then you might have missed some of these updates that have hit the App Store recently. If you've grown tired of any of these games since you first downloaded them, mash the "update all" button and give them a go again. Archetype, $2.99 - We were blown away by Archetype as evident by our review. The game features gameplay similar to Eliminate [Free] in that it's an online first person shooter that's playable over everything from EDGE to broadband via WiFi. Archetype ups the ante significantly by providing 5v5 team-based deathmatches that are a ridiculous amount of fun, and the fact that it runs at Retina Display resolutions on the iPhone 4 is the proverbial cherry on top Read More
Archetype Gets Better With New Update
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:05:58 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on August 3rd, 2010 Archetype gets better with its new 1.3.1 update. Archetype 1.3.1 is out now, and it brings even more online shooter madness to your iPhone. In the update, there is a new level, a “Rocket Arena” game mode that makes the Pride level “rockets only”, and “gyroscopic aim assist”, which is the precursor to full gyroscopic controls that will be in a future update. “Other gameplay improvements include a fix for spawning too close to enemies, a change in the default equipment that starts players with two grenades rather than three to make grenade usage more strategic, and info button that provides information and updates, user controls for inverting yaw and disabling blood effects, automatic screen rotation (iOS4 only), a memory fix for second gen iPod touch owners, and a graphical fix for player who appeared to be holding a melee axe when they had Read More

Shooters have never been anything too special on the iPhone. Numerous companies have tried to make the genre work and a few came pretty close to offering a nice experience, but usually those games ended up getting deleted after a few hours due to poor online experience. Archetype is a brand new shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch that offers a full online shooter experience. The game is very similar to games like Quake or Unreal Tournament with its large arenas and preset weapon drops. One thing that makes this game stand out immensely is the amazing controls. The game plays extremely smooth and definitely gives the feeling of control. Another awesome feature is that it takes full advantage of the iPhone 4’s display which makes it look amazing. Complete with an excellent menu system and online rankings, this game is addicting. It has a matchmaking system very similar to Read More
We posted about Archetype the other day -- it's an impressively solid multiplayer first-person shooter for the iPhone that brings some hardcore gameplay to Apple's touchscreen platform. And apparently there are a lot of hardcore players out there -- in just one week of release, Archetype has picked up 160,000 players. There have been over 320,000 matches played so far, with over player kills between them -- that's over 20,000 an hour. Publisher Villian says that it's obviously thrilled with the response, and that "future updates, offerings and new game features" are being worked on. This is interesting for a few reasons: first, most iPhone offerings tend towards the casual. Little pick-up-and-play games often seem to be the norm on the iPhone, as the vast majority of developers seem to be searching for one little interesting gameplay idea and running with it. But Archetype seems to hint that if the experience Read More
Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Monday, July 12, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to the latest edition of Small Apps + Updates, our column designed for quick looks at recent app releases and updates. This week’s Small Apps looks at nine titles ranging from games to communications and reference tools. Our top pick of the bunch is the latest version of Fring. Read on for all the details. Normally, we’d consider including Villain LLC’s new first-person shooter Archetype ($3, version 1.0.5) in an iPhone Gems roundup, but after playing it for a bit, we didn’t think there was enough in the gameplay department to warrant even a two-paragraph review… yet. What Villain has come up with is the basis for a really solid shooter, including a silky-smooth 3-D engine with iPhone 4-ready, high-resolution graphics—unfortunately downscaled on the iPad, prior iPhones, and iPod touches—and a streamlined set Read More
10 New App Store Games To Watch [July 5 - July 11]
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 14:31:05 UTC +00:00
So who’s ready for another great week of new iPhone / iPad releases?  Me too, but this week wasn’t quite as spectacular as some in the past.  We did get some remastered lovin’ in the form of Monkey Island 2 Special Edition for both iPhone and iPad, and The Last King Of Africa from Benoit Sokal was also released, so adventure game fans have plenty to do.  If you’re into FPSes, there’s a new contender in Archetype that promises intense 5 on 5 combat action.  And for RTS fans there’s The Gravedigger, a quirky new entry that lets you pit a priest and his faithful followers against a disgruntled gravedigger and his legion of the undead. – I’ve been pretty good about being thankful I have an iDevice at all, but it’s games like this that are making me wish I could upgrade.  Xenome sounds like the iPhone’s answer to Fallout or Oblivion, Read More

Ever since we spotted the online first-person shooter Archetype in limited release, we'd been dying to try the game out. At long last, Archetype was released to the global App Store this past week to much fanfare and a huge marketing campaign. After finally getting our hands on it and spending some quality time playing, we can safely say that Archetype is one impressive game, and developer Villain has, for the most part, followed through on their promises for the title. That's not to say there aren't a few issues with it, or a wish list of things we'd like to see added, but all said, Archetype delivers one of the most robust, beautiful, and most importantly fun FPS experiences that can be had on the iPhone. For starters, if you have Apple's new iPhone 4 then you are treated to some unbelievably crisp graphics. The textures that make up the levels Read More
TUAW's Daily App: Archetype
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Jul 2010 12:30:00 UTC +00:00
Well now, this one's interesting. Archetype is a brand new title on the App Store that's aiming to put what seems like a big budget experience on Apple's small screen. The game is made by MunkyFun (a company led by ex-LucasArts developer Nick Pavis) and published by Villian, "an independent producer and publisher of portable game titles" that seems to have a history in mobile gaming, but not much of a website. Basically, Archetype is purporting to be Eliminate without Ngmoco -- a full-featured multiplayer FPS without any of the microtransactions or other nonsense. And it lives up to the hype. The controls will take some getting used to, even if you're a WASD veteran. In just 30 seconds on Wi-Fi, I was loaded up and playing a 5v5 deathmatch FPS game. Even on an Edge connection, I was able to play smoothly, and even pull off a kill -- I Read More

Wow, they sure did something right with this game. So many iPhone games have such poor control (*cough* Assassin's Creed *cough*) that you end up yearning for a damn controller. The intelligent joystick design in Archetype is smooth and intuitive. After a couple of minutes, you are immediately immersed in the game and don't have to constantly adjust and re-adjust your finger placement to get your guy moving. At $2.99, this game is an f'n steal. Now go buy it and get your FPS on!
Sweet!
