Great idea and a good start, but it still needs some work. I use it mostly for the quiz and am disappointed with the lack of options. You should be able to select different categories of artists for the quiz, choose not to show the name and year of the work (especially when the name of it is something like Picasso's _____), etc.

I should have read more reviews before purchasing. Contrary to the beliefs of grammatically challenged misogynist reviewer Dwanerane, there are plenty of notable female artists who could be included in this app!

This app has limited artist and works. For example: only three works for O'keeffe & Michaelangelo, etc. Get more works for the current artist and this will be a much better app. Also get more artist.

It crashed on me the first time I viewed the list by 'Works' but after a reboot of the phone it didn't happen again. Of course, I didn't look at nearly as many things the second time I ran it, so there may still be some memory management issues lurking. Some of the things I'd like to see in an update are:

I've gotten many nice backgrounds for my phone from it. Love all the info. Keep expanding the artists and I'll keep loving it! If someone out there could make a poetry app similar to this, I'd pay twice the price! ;)

I'm an Art History major. I wish there were more artists represented; plus please do not exclude women and Non-Western artists. Concept is great and it seemed to be off to a good start except artist's page is now a blank screen with the new update???? Please fix the problem soon.

After reading the developers explanation, I've reinstalled the application and the artists are now appearing as they should. I've upated my ranking to four stars. It is a great program and is a worthwhile purchase.

Artist list is still blank! Also there doesn't seem to be any works by Rene Magritte even though he is listed.

After taking a quick look at the lite version, I decided that I needed this app. I'm currently taking an art history course and this should be a great help in my studies. I can't wait for an update with more artists!

A pretty amusing, worthwhile app. Needs more artists, it gets a bit boring after a while. Great concept.

Like the app, but big holes in the artist list, women, non_european artists and modern areas are pretty badly represented. In the new update the artists are all totally absent, fair to all, but not what I expected. Also, the portrait of Francis Bacon is the philosopher not the artist, look at the birthdate, do you really think a guy born at the turn of the last century would be in a lace dutch collar? I do like seeing all the Russian artists, good job and a good start!

Mapfox is complaining because there are no women artist on here, that is so Stupid, women artists have always been underrepresented mainly due to the fact that a young artist would have to be an apprentace. As seen in the case of Gentaleshi, she was raped. Nevertheless do not complain because there are no women artist on here because there are no great women artist in history. One would argue that O'keif is the great woman artist but really, the art of the day which was coming from male artists was far supperior. So don't put a woman artist on here just because she is a woman, put a woman artist on here because her art is comperable and deserves to be on here.

Fantastic app, ability to use paintings as wallpaper is great, quizzes are fun and wiki info is wonderful.

Nice to see! Great idea! Hard (impossible!) to include everybody. Still, reminds me of dealers who try to elevate their artists by mixing them in with the greats. I won't say it never works (it never works), but it was nice to see those Russian landscapes. Author Russian? Russian revisionism? True, most of the Western heavy hitters. No sculpture. No Rodin. No Moore. No women. No surprises except for the Russian landcape painters. Nice surpise. Beautiful, striking, fresh landscape. Worthy! But not like the others-- quite the opposite-- artists who refused to be ignored-- artists who saw life in their own way, through their own lens, with something to share with the world, and had the courage and power and drive and energy to paint that! Art, yes; artists, yes; but painters! Of course there are many others besides the ones included. The quiz is easy and cute but a great idea. My mom was a Parisian sculptor and we lived in Rome, and she would use museum cards like flash cards with me when I was 8 and 9. In art history I was a Hermione Granger-- the only person who ever knew what was up on the screen. I'll put this on my kids' iPods. Bravo! Keep up the great work!

The concept is good but the content is a bit thin, both in the number of artists and the number of artwork.

Nice to see some art instead of mindless apps

The only app that made my iphone crash. The photos are beautiful but some artists only have a few examples while others have many.

This is a fun and educational app, and of course you can't include everybody, but the selection of artists is still quite thin. I look forward to an expanded update with more artists represented and more works from each artist.

Just loaded your latest update and the artists list is missing! I was looking forward to FINALLY seeing a FEMALE artist on this app. Don't you all realize how sexist your app is! Where are Judith Leyster, Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelika Kauffmann, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Lucy Bacon, Suzanne Valadon, Louise Bourgeois, Camille Claudel, Helen Frankenthaler, Eva Hesse, Sonia Delaunay, Judy Chicago, Frida Kahlo, Grandma Moses? This is the 21st Century for crying out loud!!!

I agree that it could use more artists, and cover more periods. But for .99 cents it's pretty cheap educational entertainment! I look forward to more upgrades!

I normally love this app and love refreshing all my art history lessons from college. Unfortunately, the newest update completely deleted the artist section.. What a dissapointment. Magritte is a BIG favorite of mine and I was so excited. Please fix!

On 2/4/09 this app required an update. After the update I lost the "Artists" section. There is no way to contact the makers about this bug.

The only reason why I bought this app, instead of the other ones was because the art was already saved in the device, and it didn't need an internet connection to gaze upon some art. This update turns the app in one of the tens of other ones. If ADS doesn't make an update, allowing some kind of a batch art download, I'm giving the update 3 stars. Another thing: ADS should seriously fix some of the artists' biographies - seems like Rembrandt, for example, is born and died on the same date.

When I bought this app I was in love. At the time it was somewhat limited in scope but it was awesome to be able to see all this art anywhere I went. Not 3 days later it goes from an awesome app that allowed me to learn More about art any time to a much broader tool that requires an Internet connection to use. Now this is all but useless to me because I don't have a connection on my iPod touch everywhere I go. They changed the fundamental nature of the app with the update and I don't think that is right. What if you bought an app that allowed you to take notes and a few days later they updated it into an app that only allowed you to take notes when your at the pubb, then its no longer what you paid for. Sure it's only 99 cents but it's not what I paid for and I want my dollar back.

The update has great potential, due to the expansion, but I'm with Hadrox -- provide a batch download, or the app is almost useless. The earlier, more limited version was much better because you could actually see pictures without waiting for a download. Disappointing.

I degrade my rating as i am big disappointed. Previous version was 10x better. Who would like to wait? How can I cancel this upgrade and go back to the previous version?

The slideshow or going through the paintings is not working right. The update is flawed. I loved the program initially, but the code needs more work. I had looked forward to the upgrade, but it's a mess.

Fun application for testing and learning more about artists. One question, why put artists in order by their FIRST name rather than their last name? Seems odd. Can't wait for more updates and more artists!

I have an iPhone so the Internet connection isn't such a problem for me, that said, I adore the amount of information they added in the biographies section and te number of piece they added, the fact that they added more than one tripdyche by frances bacon makes me love the update, I say buy it f you have an iPhone, the quiz is a great tool for an art student, and it's just a dollar Make it so you can use offline and I'll make it 5 stars

You provided an alpha index of the artists by their FIRST names?? Are you kidding me? Please fix this. Also, I agree with the opinions that this app was better without the VERY annoying time lag to go through the galleries. You should definitely drop requiring internet access for this, go back to the way it was. Finally, the numerous mistakes are making me wonder how reliable this app really is.

What was originally an incredible App has been ruined by this update. I want to see artwork. Instead I am only presented with the word Art as I patiently wait for the graphic to load. Rework the update with the original content stored locally and an option to "see more works by this artist" to take you online. Then the App will be worth using again.

My major beef with this is the artists are alphabetized by first name. This doesn't make sense as it is easier to scroll through the list by last name. Never thought I would find Vincent van Gogh under V. Fix this and the app would be more user friendly.

I agree with the other negative reviews. The images now take forever to load off the internet - the original vers had images on board. Plus the GUI is now nausiatingly "arty". It's such a nice idea for an app, but the upgrade is vastly overdesigned.

Do not download the updated version of this app -- you will delete over 90% of the content! The Monet section alone is missing 21 of the images and those that remain need a web connection to open.

I bought this app about a week before the upgrade and was very impressed. Now all of a sudden it takes forever to view art because it's on the server instead of my iPhone. You need to find a way to have the vast majority on the phone... Maybe let us click more to go to the server but have a good amount on the phone by default. Until u figure it out LET ME DOWNGRADE. You used to be cool, man...

This app, along with any other that promotes art, I believe, is for a good purpose. I liked the new look and interface; a couple if suggestions, though: 1- When on quiz, looking at an artist's info, and clicking "back," the app quits. 2- Too much artwork! Ok, having variety is great, but some uncommon pieces might not be that common and might not reflect the author's style. It would be awesome if you could choose for the quiz either to display only common artwork or if you could actually choose the pieces or artists you want to be quizzed on. 3- You should really allow the user to download at least common artwork so you can use the app with no Internet connection, specially for those of us who use iPod touch and not iPhone. 4- Some artworks display the author's name bellow them, which makes them compleately disappointing while on quiz. I could give you five stars if you fixed these issues. Appart from that, great app!

UPDATE 4.1 update crashes beyond first use. NP, just fix please. It's common for big updates to have problems. Once you buy the app you can delete and redownload it free. Will try that a little later. ----- Program has good fundamentals. Graphic user interface is attractive and easy to use. Ability to download images is very nice. what caused me to spend 99 cents was the fact you improved you app based on feedback. Sign of a mature developer. Things to consider: Some artwork is very small. Please improve that, so zoom function can show details, not pixelated view. Placing built in iPod would help while we can not run more than one app at time. Some kind of social forum by genre or artist would give your app a new dimension. So far I like the two Russian painters I saw. Good job. Five stars for taking feedback and 85 cents in the bank :)

Thanks for bringing back Top Sales, (this review is an update...) Great app, a must have for art lovers. Nice additions in the last versions doubling the number of artists. Lots of info, includes a fun game to learn about the artists, and great pictures that could also be used as wallpapers. Still missing some major artists like El Greco. Hope that the next update extends the artists' database

Bought on 8/16/2009. Appears previous problems are corrected. This is a stunning app. Carefully crafted and comprehensive. If you've run "Art Lite" you know what to expect. The additional artists are covered with similar attention to detail. A museum in your pocket.

There's just too much right about this program to complain about the one or two glitches - such a brilliant resource to have!

Enjoy the work for what it is. If you want to get into interpretations, go to your local library and check out the art book that is a foot thick and weighs 20 pounds!...You can literally find dozens of seperate interpretations of Bosch's "Garden of Earhly Delights". It just depends on which one you like the best. The app is great the way it is. If i want to poke my nose into the why and wherefores, i can always Google the artist...I would like, however, to see the addition of Eyvind Earle to the list of artists.....perhaps some Robert Lynn Nelson??

Where did all the artists go???? Jackson P, Picasso, Dali to name but a few. You can't have an art app without the post impressionists. Didn't anyone think of copyright infringement before you started selling it? I assumed that was what we were paying for. This app has gone from a 5 to a 1. Sort it out, please.

As many of have pointed out it claims network problems when downloading art when there are not any. It was working with a few glitches and crashes here and there until the database got large. It took about 60 sessions over 25 days to get about 77% of the content loaded to my iphone. I would run it a bit each day to see what was missing and which artists i could download first. After it hit the 77% mark it would just crash out on start up, it would not run at all. I reinstalled, losing all data (doesnt back up to itunes) and now its crashing out at the 45% mark.

UPDATE

I just updated to the newest version (4.3) and in it they removed some of the most well-known artist of our time. Practically all post-impressionist art was removed during the update. For me, that's my favorite period of time, so the loss of that art work dropped down my rating. I do understand the reasons behind it, copyrights to artistic works and names such as Khalo, Rieverra, Dali, Picasso, and other more modern artists' works. The only post impressionist I was able to find was Henri Rousseau which much to my luck, is a favorite artist. Prior to this unfortunate (but understandably necessary) update I would have rated this program a solid 5. The interface is great, the ability to take the downloaded artistic works and then upload them to the camera roll or e-mail them was a great idea. Sugguestions for future development would be a catagorization based on the period of work in which the artist created, the inclusion of sculpturs, as well as the ability to link from within the application a photo to an MMS text without having to save it to the camera roll first. I hope in the future they will work on getting the rights to these more well-known art works as they are extremely important for the understanding of the artistic medium. I also echo the desire of select commentary/analysis/details/location etc. of certain more well-known pieces. I give the application a 3 because i know it has the capability to do much better if it can just get the big names back behind it.
