Posted 04/05/2012 at 3:06pm | by J.R. Bookwalter Lots of app news today for both iOS and Mac alike, so we’re switching gears to mostly focus on these updates today. But there is one exception: A small bit at the end discussing the impact polarized sunglasses make on our favorite devices, which is particularly extreme on any iPad held in portrait mode -- the screen goes almost completely black with sunglasses on! Not much you can do about that except rotate the screen to landscape mode, but some interesting factoids to follow for this Thursday, April 5, 2012 edition. TechCrunch is reporting that live video platform Justin.tv is about to grow its TwitchTV game portal into a universal app for the iPad as well as Android. The live-streaming video game community already has an existing iPhone app, but users have been demanding one for the iPad and the company claims a Read More

iPen, el primer stylus activo para iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Nov 2011 16:26:36 UTC +00:00

Jonathan Gay works as a project manager for a pre-school in Newton, PA and has created a project he named Art of the iPad. He wanted to see how creative very young kids could be using new technology without the usual prerequisite of training. Not wanting to use any of the existing art apps for children, Jonathan decided on using ArtRage (US $6.99), a fully featured painting app with a simple interface that includes pencils, brushes, rollers, spray paint and other tools that can create quite realistic painting effects with a swipe of the finger. ArtRage3 is far more than a coloring book and is not geared to use by kids. In turn, each child, who was given next to no instruction, had a go to see what they could come up with. Jonathan watched the first child. "I watched him scan up and down the device and I watched as Read More
TUAW's Daily App: ArtRage
Calendar16 Fri, 07 Jan 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
ArtRage is a very slick drawing and painting app, originally for Windows and Mac, but now also found on the iPad. The app is extremely realistic. You can use any number of various brushes and paints, and the colors will even blend and warp on the canvas as you lay them down, just as they would on a real surface. The iPad app even allows for unlimited layers and blending, and it can export files out with a sync or send them straight to email for the Photo library. ArtRage is an excellent app for the iPad, and just for the CES 2011 show, it's been discounted to just US$1.99. If you're interested in a serious art app for the iPad, that's a bargain at even twice the price. We got to meet Ambient Design at CES just last evening here at the show in Las Vegas, and in addition to Read More

OMG...!!!
cymod 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I just spent seven bucks on an app that keeps crashing! Maybe Ambient Design should have spent a little more time "designing" an app that would work when it was unleashed. Just a waste of money as of this moment!!
Lots of promise, but....
Tdtv 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
...unstable. Getting lots of crashes. Still haven't been able to create a second painting without it crashing! Also crash just about every time I change paper types. If they get that fixed, cool, because the features and tools are crazy awesome!
Laggy and useless now, but could be great
Apollo_I3 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
LAGGY. Such awesome tools, if only each draw stroke didn't finish drawing a second after I drew it. I love potentially mixing colors though. Also, the color picker doesn't really work accurately, and there is no way to change the image resolution so you can work on something smaller.
Needs lots of work
drhg 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I don't think artrage will be my app until they really clean it up. I find it distracting, frustrating and infuriating. It responds oddly and then crashes. The interface is clunky and intrusive. It has a lot to offer, but needs a thorough revision. Since the interface is so nonintuitive they need to provide a dedicated manual for the iPad version. There are odd lags and frequent crashes. I've lost a lot of work. It offers a lot, but doesn't yet deliver.
Really Great App with some flaws and one important limitation
SFDex 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I love ArtRage on the Mac and am really glad to have it on the iPad. They've done a great job adapting the software to the iPad, except for a few things already mentioned in other reviews -- particularly the lag with the more complex brushes and the random crashing. I'm certainly willing to put up with some flaws, but never knowing if your painting is just going to vanish (or go back to your most recent save) is distracting as an artist. The lag also interferes with the artistic flow I feel when using the app Brushes. While Brushes doesn't have the kind of media simulation that ArtRage has, it does have stability. The important limitation is that ArtRage only allows for 1024x768 output, which isn't enough to print on a large scale. If they come up with a solution that allows for high-resolution output --like Brushes' viewer companion application, or larger canvas settings on the iPad -- I'll bump up to five stars. Until these issues are addressed, it's a toy. A fun, creative toy, yes, but nothing you can use for professional, printed output.
Great tools but....
Old Penny 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a really awesome application with some great tools but this app is buggy. It has a tendency to just quit on you right in the middle of a project. So you have to save often and cross your fingers it won't do this to you too soon. The tools and effects are like no other app I've seen. Great textures and feel of real art tools. It would have five stars if it didn't shut down on me all the time. I just deal with it. I hope the developers can get this fixed. This could be a professional illustration application if they do.
ArtRage is great!
Symmachus 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
All the other quality art programs (Brushes, SketchBook Pro, ArtStudio, Inspire Pro) force you to adapt to a medium and feeling unique to their app. The great thing about ArtRage is that, it makes you feel as if your Ipad is truly a canvas and your stylus/finger (I would recommend a stylus) is loaded with paint. It does not force you into the learning curve of some strange, new tool. I feel more naturally integrated with ArtRage than with any other art app I have bought. Couple that natural feeling with a huge assortment of options for brush character, texture, blending, palettes, layering...Artrage is simply amazing!
Beautiful paint program (5*) but has stability issues (1*)
GlassCanvas2 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
The program could be great. Updated review The paint strokes are great and the painting is beautiful and fluid the interface is very good Stability is still very poor in version 1.0.2 Avoid emailing a picture from within ArtRage for now as that seems to induce a lot of crashes. Ambient has been very responsive to my help questions and has been working at resolving the problems. There are somethings that help if you have an older version deinstall it and the reinstall it. You can backup your work first if desired using iTunes. Turning OFF the iPad and restarting helps but once you crash you need to do it again to get ArtRage to work. Once the stability issues are solved it will be a five start application the painting is beautiful.
Wow - Just Wow
crispee 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
If you've been slightly disappointed in other painting apps for the iPad - look no further. This one is amazing. The others are decent and i have a few, but this is the only one that really gets the tactile sensation of materials and how they interact with each other. You can push oil, scrape it through other colors and they all blend. Tons of settings and a UI that really gets out of the way. I wish you could work on a larger resolution canvas but so far I'm amazed.
Absolutely phenomenal!
Flybabees 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
If could give it 10 stars, i would! Happy its finally out on the iPad! Love the oils! Fantastic presets! it is really the most true to life digital painting app to date. a definite GAME CHANGE! its like falling in love with fingerpainting...all over again! Great job! App is highly recommended!
Great drawing/painting app
dsnymgc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very impressive drawing app. Great feature list. Simple to pick up and start using. It has an elegant UI, works well if you have a stylus too. Has the richness of Painter. The program never crashed for me.
This is easily in my top 5 Art apps
scaredofdeer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I have been using the iPhone for fingerpaitning since January of 2009 and moved up to the iPad in summer of 2010. I have purchased and used many art apps since early 2009 and I have to say that ArtRage is going to be a keeper and used daily. Really great art tools and veyr easy to use menus and features. When you use the app remember to save often as it uses alot of memory on the iPad and can encounter a crash from time to time. A very powerful art app.
Love it, not experiencing any crashes yet.
baddogroberto 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's got a great UI, and you can create some very nice layered art with it. I've been using it about 20 minutes without a crash as others have reported. But then again, a lot of the iPad apps I have crash after awhile, so I wouldn't be surprised if it does happen. As long as my work is saved, I could deal with it.
Good practice
polarpaul 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've been using the app to practice painting techniques. Haven't had crash problems as I did in the earlier version. An amazing variety of effects can be achieved.
Very cool app
AR fan 1776 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app is awesome! I have tried many other apps that paint or draw, and this one actually produces a result that looks like art! I can't stop fooling around with it. No more sketching on location. Now it's painting on location, without the fuss and supplies. I can't wait for my next long plane trip to Europe. Imagine ten hours of painting instead of watching some forgettable movie.
The very best
joe spat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I have tried them all. All those other painting apps. Now though I will admit sketchbook pro and maybe brushes and art studio are great I'd not better for drawing... Import those images here to paint. It the best painting app out there hands down! Please art rage add in the up date the instant dry option and also larger brush sizes fore blocking in stuff. An eyedropper like other painting apps have. These would add a sixth star to the app. Thanks for porting this program!
In a league of its own
Rmg2768 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app could be compared to other art / drawing apps, but is really different in it's ease of expression and "feel". Once you play with the different tools and learn what they do, and then play with the many presets and parameters for *each* tool, you'll see how this is a very different app altogether. It actually remembers the state of the medium after it is laid down - thick, thin, wet, etc and the scraper and brush tools interact with existing pigment in subtle, realistic ways. It didn't take long to create a watercolor painting of my son from a photograph (love both then options for pinning a small copy, or overlaying a full size copy with variable transparency for sketching). Read the help - there are some not-so-obvious but essential operations, e.g. Color-picking, that don't have their own button but rather run via gestures. This means that there is a little more of a learning curve, but for serious artists it is the only app that replicates some of their favorite media on the iPad. I had good success with the pastel, crayon, and inking tool, using the blurring knife and changing the pressure. This gives a soft warercolorneffectnbut with more control over detail. Two requests - options for resolution and changing the canvas parameters after starting the painting (unless I missed it somewhere), and an online gallery to share and view creations. A wonderful app that will bring out your inner artist! P.s. Another idea, but maybe difficult to make intuitive: using the accelerometer as an additional input for user-configurable realtime brush input, e.g. Pressure, size, opacity
Worth every penny
rainmound 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
And looking forward to improvements and additions-and other apps from this detail oriented programmer. The cons: still a little buggy, crashed twice in a day (usually when I used the color picker, may be fixed now. The pros: being able to stick a photo reference (several) on the workspace. Which disappear just when you need em too... The very natural movement of the paint and the excitement of the paper textures. Go Ambient!
The Best Painting App in the Store
robfuzz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I've tried them all and ArtRage is the closest thing to real painting. Period. The way the colors blend, the way the paint looks...I'm actually pretty speechless. AMAZING UI. It made me hug my iPad(which I never do....in public ;)) This blows InspirePro and Brushes right out of the water(and I like both those apps too). ArtRage may cost a couple more bucks but trust me it is SO worth it.
This is drawing and painting on the iPad as it was meant to be!
touchytouchy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app is loaded with different paper textures, layers with blending modes, reference photo pinning and tracing, andall of the tools have multiple variations and settings, including automatic smoothing for the technical pen. The watercolor simulation is amazing-- I've been waiting a long time for a watercolor to make it's way onto an Apple device, and this app does wc better than I ever imagined. This is a powerful and convincing app-- not only In terms of output, but the interface is less clunky than some other apps out there. For instance, while sketching this morning using the fine paper and pencil tool, I repeatedly brushed imaginary eraser dust off of the screen. I think that says it all.
ArtRage!
wizatunes 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very nice art app. Just like the desktop version. A little bit of lag, but look what it's doing: watercolor, texture...(Hopefully they will tighten it up a bit). No crashes for me so far... and I have been pushing it kinda hard. Will be using this as my main mobile art weapon now.
The Best
Senteag 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Yes, it is still a bit buggy, but for me it's the most realistic yet easy and fun painting app I've yet used. Well worth it.
2 Things
Aml619 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Add realistic workable Grids, bring in your ruler tools and double the price. I have every quality art app for the iPad that's out there and this one is by far the most realistic, intuitive and user friendly. It is far than better than all the others in input and out put results. Simply said -Art Rage Rules. Again developers - Add realistic workable grids, bring in your ruler tools and double your price and know one can touch you. For those viewers reading this suggestion. Remember ....You get what you pay for. As is this App. Is top of the line. For the viewer. After installing this app. Turn off the iPad wait 5 seconds or more then restart. Then and only then you load any new application. I have not had one crash or any problems with Art Rage using this method. P.S. I don't know these people (developers) or anyone that works for them. I ran across this app last night and purchased it. It cut into my lunch money.
About update
BruceBruc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
There seems to be an update to solve the problem of crash for art rage, very nice
The only real paint program on the iPad!!
rofthorax 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
If you are not familiar with Artrage, it's been around for at least five years, and is available for windows and macosx as well, and even runs in linux under wine, the PC version sells for about 25 dollars. It's the only paint program I know that tries to simulate actual media, and in that it also limits you to the constraints of natural media so that you are forced to make natural looking works, so no rapid copy and pasting, and such, you can do that in some other program, bring it into art rage if you want to scrape your photos with a palette knife, color it with oils or chalk up with pastels, or spray on metalic gold paint with an air brush. Note that this paint program uses bump mapping so oil paints seem to have a real texture, and mixing paints results in brown as it would in a natural medium. Note: for those experiencing crashes, try turning your iPad off and back on again, some software on the iPad has memory leaks (they hold resources but fail to return thrm to the system), so as a result applications, like Art Rage, that use a lot of memory will eventually crash when unable to allocate memory resources from the system, restarting the device fixes that problem. Also for those who thought it wasn't tested before it was released, it went through a number of beta testers. If there is problems with the program, wait a couple of months.
