Back to School: Top 10 iPhone Apps for Students
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Aug 2009 20:47:49 UTC +00:00
Ah, the smell of erasers and chalk dust is in the air, which can mean only one thing: it’s back to school time in many parts of the world. While I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was happy my school days are behind me, I am a bit jealous that students heading back to school now have a plethora of great web and mobile applications to help them tackle the tasks involved with obtaining an education. I would have killed for some of the great applications available to students today — almost all of which are cooler (and more useful) than the Tetris app I used to play on my graphing calculator. In this list we’ve assembled ten of the must-have iPhone applications for students heading back to school. These apps will help you stay organized, take notes, and study better. What other iPhone applications are helpful to you Read More

Better than iProcrastinate
Girlwholived.net 4.0 stars Version: 1.25
Being a University student, I understand the importance of keeping track of your school-related chores, assignments, and tasks. It is no easy task, particularly in this day in age when it is so easy to lose a piece of paper that tells you need to do. iCal is great for remembering birthdays, but it does not scream at you that you have a major thesis due in two months, and your draft is due NEXT WEEK.
Very handy
Kraznoff 5.0 stars Version: 1.25
All in all this is a very good app, the best one i found for students. I downloaded "Things" but that's not as useful for keeping track of school assignments, you cant organize them into catagories like classes, as far as i know atleast. I also checked out iProcrastinate mobile, the free school task messenger and its really great if your not looking to pay anything, i would recommend it, but if your looking for more features and a bit more polish this app is worth it. I find it ridiculous that people are saying don't buy this app because theres something like it for free, it's one thing to point out there's a free app that has many of the same features, but to say don't buy it because of that is arrogant.
Features that would make me give 25 stars
AyoRain 3.0 stars Version: 1.25
1. Easier way to add a new assignent
Period
Hitz 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
I really need a period spot. I don't know the time of any of my classes.
Decent Application
pastro 3.0 stars Version: 1.25
1. Really wish that you could check off assignments without deleting them upon completion.
Good
asummer 4.0 stars Version: 1.00
Good task organization app for students. I like the tutorials. Some minor bugs. The notes you can assign to an assignment when you click on them it doesn't reveal the rest of the notes beyond what you can see in the horizontal header. Also, the numbers in the class time wheel are at irregular intervals, kind of odd. All in all great potential!
Worth the price
cdownes 5.0 stars Version: 1.25
This is going to work really well for school. I love this app already! I've been told that it will soon support emailing the list and then printing it which will only make it better!
Best Assignments management app
X7or 5.0 stars Version: 1.25
This app does exactly what it's supposed to, keep track of all your classes and assignments in a very efficient and elegant way. A must have.
Great app...
King Pip 4.0 stars Version: 1.00
This is an easy to use, easy to manage app that is going to save my butt in college! The updated version, hopefully, will correct the minor flaws in this powerful, little app. Pretty fair price for the quality of this app, too.
Great Application
Tom Harrison 5.0 stars Version: 1.25
This is a great application. Handles school work much better than iProcrastinate, and it isn't very much money, either. I really love that you can add a recording to an assignment, and a lot of the other features, as well.
Great
Bonjour44444 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I love this application and it is very easy to use. I think that the price is really good for an application that can do so much
Bought it at the $2.99 update
rootbeersoup 1.0 stars Version: 1.31
Waste of $3... The app deleted my classes at first and now it deletes all of my assignments... It crashed A LOT as well... The app just seems extremely buggy to me. Pass on this until it gets fixed.
Grrrrr
GarethKeenan 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
It's disappointing that this app is so clunky and nonintuitive. Here are some examples:
Love it, but needs a few improvements/additions...
Jonny Phive 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Great program so far but it has a lot of room for welcomed expansion.
Call the Exterminator!!!
Paulgeo 1.0 stars Version: 1.31
I had high hopes for this app, but wait until a later update, it is watching too buggy! It crashes and freezes the phone. Hope the fix it or I will delete it! I wonder if I can get a refund, please fix this app developers...
Needs Improvement
yum yum sweaters 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
This is a pretty good app. It looks WAY better than iProcrastinate. I use Assignments all the time, but it needs some improvements such as: - Needs a place where you can schedule tests and exams and when you get close to it, it should tell you to study. - Needs more levels for prioritizing. 4 is not enough. - If you type something in the notes section that is a bit long, you can't read it all unless you press 'edit'. Please fix this. - Some different, more colorful, and customizable icons would be nice. Right now, they are rather plain and ugly. - You have to tap a million times in the box where you enter the title before it actually lets you type anything.
Nice app with potiential
Mahoganylit 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
This app deems to be useful to me; however, it could use a few things to make it great. Currently there isn't and option to sort the assignments based on due dates, priority or anything. You can assign an assignment to the classes but it would be nice to have more sorting options within the classes. The assignments are currently stored in the order that they were entered. Otherwise, this is a great app.
Love it, BUT...
sirr3ginald 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Is there any way to add a functionality that warns you of your assignments that are due soon on the locked screen when you just turn it on, much like texts, phone calls, events w/ alarms, etc. I hope Apple has not blocked this functionality because it could make this app a whopping 10/5 stars!!! Rather than 4/5... It might sound like laziness, but I just don't want to make new events w/ alarms every time I want to be reminded of a task WITHOUT having to open the app. I might as well not make an assignment I will just forget because I didn't check the app.
Good but needs work
Nort88 4.0 stars Version: 1.25
I've used both Assignments and IProcrastinate and there are plusses to both. The "due soon" is very nice with Assignments, but there is a bug in the alert (but they say they are going to fix it). IProcrastinate you get to color code your classes, but Assignments lets you voice record notes for yourself. Assignments needs to be able to add a way to write the professor's name under the class, the ending times of classes, group member names, steps of a project (like IProcrastinate) and a few other upgrades. Overall it is a good application, they just need to have a few things to make it amazing.
O my smurfing god!
What nickname?! 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
This is idiot proof!
Good, waiting for improvements
Rob64z 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
This certainly a good app, but could learn at least one important thing from iprocrastinate: an easy way to check off assignments instead of deleting them. Also, it would make a lot of things easier if the due date on an assignment was smart and automatically matched re time of a class. Another iP lesson to be learned is the ability to view assignments by class. It wouldn't be a bad idea either to have an incrimental option as well, for example: a single entry for a book but with multiple due dates for various page numbers. Over all, a great app.
Works Great
Jorden Bradley 3.0 stars Version: 1.31
App works great!!
Extremely Useful To Any Student
topazmidget 4.0 stars Version: 1.31
I suggest this application to any student. It completely replaces the traditional “Date Runner” or “Agenda” given by some schools. This is all you’ll ever need. I am going to be starting my second year in college; I wish this app had existed when I was in grade school. The feature I love the most is being able to receive alerts when an assignment is going to be due soon, and the organization of the assignments and what course they belong to. Also, unlike most apps, this company has tried their best to match the app’s “cosmetics” to match those of Apple’s.
Terrible Application - Stay away from it!
autuer 1.0 stars Version: 1.31
Application constantly crashes.....and looses all the assignments you've listed! How can this be efficient for students when you open a program and all of your assignments have vanished? I've finally given up because I'm tired if having to delist everything....don't have that kind if time with seven classses! Finally, I just think the programmers who invented this are just interested in taking people's money.....of all the applications I own...there's never been an update on this one....I've had it now for three months. Besides that these people don't even care to address these issues or respond to criticism. The probably work on Wall Stree...get the point! DON'T BUY! Wast of money. Better application available at 50-75% less!
Big Dissapointment
jnot2 1.0 stars Version: 1.31
I was really excited for this app and was horribly let down. Nothing about it is intuitive at all, you have to search for everything you need. it takes for ever to enter an assignment, and if i entered more then one at a time it would crash every time. on top of the predicted crashes it would crash randomly and frequently loosing all the work I had done. also every time i opened the app it would creat new phantom assignments that were due asap so they would then give me an alarm that they were due, I would have to close the alarm, and then go find the randomly created assignments and delete them before I could do anything else. I got iprocrastinate for free and it is every thing I could have hoped for, simple, INTUITIVE, and NEVER CRASHES! P.s sorry for the bad review, but you really need to stri[ this thing down and re- build from the foundation!
Would Like a Refund!
Juddybuddy1981 1.0 stars Version: 1.31
Waste of $3, crashed too much, my events would be deleted every time I exited the app, and would add blank events that were overdue and would alarm when the app was opened! DO NOT BUY!
Pretty good app, new update makes it a lot better--still needs a few features added
BigPinkFloyd 4.0 stars Version: 1.31
I bought this app and I'm pretty satisfied with it; I just wish when you looked at an assignment it showed on the bottom what class it is from when in the overview tab. Also when in the assignments tab and looking at assignments under each class, it would be nice if the date due was shown under each assignment without having to click on each assignment to check out the due date and details. Really like the ability to check off completed assignments rather than delete. Gets better with every update.
Awsome update, must have
Piemaster399 5.0 stars Version: 1.31
The much needed update is awsome. Now you can check your assignments off and when something is due soon the is one of those red circles that apears at the right hand corner of the app. (similar to if you have new mail). The format is awsome and is a must have for any student with an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Really buggy...not worth $6
chicekn 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
This program does have some nice features, yes, but it is too buggy to even work right. For me, when I enter an assignment, I literally waste time because when I click "done", the assignment has no data!! Then I have to re enter everything again, hoping that it "sticks".
Good App...Needs Improvements
Ebonezer 4.0 stars Version: 1.31
I like this app. There are some improvements I would like to see. It would be great if it was optional to set a due time for assignments. I prefer to just set a date with no time. Also, editting an assignment is a bit tedious. It takes far to many steps. Also, I don't want a pop-up everytime I open the app telling me I have an assignment due. Overall, this app is nice it just needs improving!
Good, needs improvement
ACiB 3.0 stars Version: 1.31
This app is definitely good, but needs major improvements, for starters a faster way to enter assignments and it also needs a way to notify you of upcoming homeworks (i know there is no push, but mail would be nice)... Sync with mac is also missing :(
