TeleNav announces free HTML5-based GPS nav service
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Dec 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
TeleNav is a large provider of GPS navigation applications for smartphones and in-car infotainment systems. Whether it's the AT&T Navigator app or Ford vehicles, TeleNav is behind the scenes. Today the company announced the upcoming availability of an HTML5-based navigation service that works on just about any smartphone platform -- including iOS5 -- and can be built into apps through an API. The service is browser-based and provides voice-guided turn-by-turn GPS navigation services, full-color moving maps, and automatic rerouting. TeleNav says that the service will be free for both consumers and developers when it goes live in early 2012. TeleNav wants to partner with mobile developers, stating that with one line of code, devs can add full turn-by-turn navigation to mobile websites and apps with local content. Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president of produce for TeleNav said that, "With one line of code, you can give your customers one-click access Read More
TeleNav offers a sort-of free GPS solution for iOS
Calendar16 Mon, 31 Oct 2011 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
As we continue our survey of GPS apps for iOS, I have to mention the TeleNav family. The company, which is also behind the AT&T Navigator subscription app, offers a free entry level app that is quite popular with users, even though it is missing some key features. For free you get turn-by-turn directions, 3D maps, local search that includes gas prices, and one-touch rerouting. There's a big feature missing, however. No spoken turn-by-turn directions. So, in a way, it's not offering much more than the built-in Maps application, and less than the free voice-enabled Mapquest application (published by our parent company AOL). There is a 3D view, but when driving, you don't want to be looking at a screen. The solution is an upgrade to the US $0.99 app, but after that you use it for 30 days you need to upgrade to a $9.99 a year subscription. That's a Read More

TeleNav Announces Verizon iPhone GPS App
Calendar16 Mon, 07 Feb 2011 14:02:29 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/07/2011 at 6:02am | by J.R. Bookwalter Verizon iPhone 4 owners, welcome to the App Store! On the heels of the carrier’s own free My Verizon Mobile and VZ Transfer apps released last week, GPS developer TeleNav has announced that Verizon customers will be getting their own “Big Red” flavor navigation in the style of the AT&T Navigator app. TUAW is reporting that TeleNav GPS will soon be releasing a Verizon Wireless-specific navigation app, similar to their current AT&T Navigator offering. Like the AT&T version, the app will be free to download from the App Store and use for the first 30 days, then you’ll pay $2.99 per month or $21.99 per year. “As with many navigation apps for the iPhone, TeleNav GPS for the Verizon iPhone provides spoken turn-by-turn directions with street names as well as 2D or 3D moving maps,” TUAW explains. “The app updates routes if you Read More

App Showdown: TomTom vs. Navigon

Posted 12/14/2010 at 9:50am | by Matthew Tilmann As blizzards and the like bear down on the nation, sometimes traveling can get a little dicey, and it can be easy to lose where you're at.  Granted, you could probably just pull over and open a map, but why not let your iPhone do that for you?  We highlight two apps that are the leaders, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, and TomTom's U.S. & Canada app. Before we get going, when it comes to GPS apps, one of the largest questions most have is, "how much is this gonna cost me?" As of the time of this writing, Navigon and TomTom are both at $59.99 USD.  Let's get driving! When Navigon's app first came out, many were leery of it, because of the fact that Navigon's portable devices came to an abrupt halt in the US, so many wondered if the app would Read More
TeleNav releases free OnMyWay notification app for iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 26 Aug 2010 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
TeleNav is the developer of a lot of mobile navigation applications, including AT&T Navigator for the iPhone. Now the company has come out with an iPhone version of a popular app that originally launched for the BlackBerry platform -- OnMyWay. OnMyWay has a simple goal -- it tells another person or group of people that you are currently "on your way" and sends them the estimated time of your arrival. The app sends new alerts to your contacts if your ETA changes (if you're stuck in traffic, for instance), so that you can safely continue driving and not have to call or text someone else if you're running late. To set up a notification, the iPhone owner inputs a destination, an appointment time, and one or more phone numbers or email addresses to send alerts to, then taps the start button. iPhone contacts are integrated into the app to make setting Read More

AT&T Navigator powered by Telenav
Calendar16 Mon, 22 Feb 2010 06:36:51 UTC +00:00
Rating: 7 out of 10Pros: Very accurate, simple easy to read user interface, powered by a respected name in the navigation industry; Telenav, live traffic alerts.Cons: Maps not stored on phone and is real time over the cellular network so if you have no cell service you are out of luck, subscription based at $9.99 a month if you choose the monthly billing, charged to your AT&T bill.Overall: AT&T Navigator performs quite well on the road and is extremely user-friendly and pleasant on the drivers eyes.  I thoroughly enjoyed using this application and service but there are a few things that are a bit of a concern.  First, as mentioned above, the maps are dependent on cellular service which means no cell service equals no navigational application, the other is the monthly or yearly subscription fee.  At $119.88 a year if you choose monthly billing or $69.99 for the yearly subscription Read More
AT&T updates Navigator app for the 5th time
Calendar16 Tue, 09 Feb 2010 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
Hot on the heels of the Navigon update, AT&T is adding more features to its subscription based Navigator app for iPhone [iTunes link]. This update includes 'shake-to-go,' which allows users to shake their iPhone at any time while in an AT&T Navigator menu screen; the phone will automatically initiate a route to a pre-designated "home" address the user has set. This doesn't work while in navigation mode, so there's no worry about a pothole or bumpy road initiating a new route during a trip. Other updated features include: The latest version is 1.5i and current owners should be able to download the latest build from the iTunes store. Read More
Review: AT&T Navigator app for iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Dec 2009 17:05:42 UTC +00:00
I’ve been using the AT&T Navigator app for iPhone for a couple of months now. This is a free app, but it requires a $10/month subscription from AT&T (or $70 for an annual subscription). I’m not going to belabor the GPS functions too much in this review: it’s almost the year 2010, and the global positioning system has been used to provide turn-by-turn directions for long enough now that any GPS device or application being reviewed should do that basic job. Instead, I’m going to examine how useful a GPS function is on your mobile phone, talk about some of what’s nice (and not-so-nice) about the AT&T Navigator, and look at the value proposition of a $10/month subscription in light of Google’s free turn-by-turn driving directions on the Verizon Droid. The Not-So-Good The first thing to know about the Navigator application is that it suffers from the iPhone’s inability to support Read More
We're about to hit the big holiday travel peak, and it's a great time to survey what we've seen this year for iPhone GPS apps. GPS navigation by satellite has been around a long time, but it's never been this inexpensive or desirable. There's an explosion of choices, with competitive features and falling prices. For many of our readers, facing long trips to see family and friends, getting the right GPS app is a priority. A few words about this guide: I haven't seen or tested everything on the market, and the choices are constantly changing and updating. I've done my best to keep up and get some time on the road with each of the apps listed here. If I haven't talked about your favorite app, it's not because I don't like it, but because I can't vouch for it. Like all of you, I have some criteria by which Read More
CoPilot Live navigates to more features
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
CoPilot Live [iTunes link] for North American roads is becoming the little engine that could. At only US$34.99 it is quickly adding new features, and in this latest update has added the coveted text to speech capability. For drivers, that means the nav app will say "turn left on Elm street" instead of "turn left just ahead". Other new features include adding an iPhone-standard keyboard for entering destinations, instead of the one designed for the app (which was clunky). The maps have been updated, and the developer says there is better integration of the address book from the iPhone. I took CoPilot for a drive. It acquired the GPS signal quickly and I was on my way. It looks like the POI database has been improved, and the text to speech worked as anticipated. It is a great addition, and even the TomTom still doesn't have that feature. Navigon and AT&T Read More
Live Traffic comes to Mobile Navigator
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Sep 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's coming! Navigon, maker of the iPhone Mobile Navigator app [iTunes link], will announce a live traffic feature tomorrow that will be rolled out next month. The update is only for the North American version of the software. Our readers have absolutely lusted after this feature for iPhone navigation, and now, after already adding text to speech in an update earlier this month, Navigon has pulled ahead of the pack again. According to the company: The system 'uses real-time speed data from over one million drivers across North America including commercial fleets such as trucks and taxis but also regular drivers with a GPS system. So if for example several vehicles on a road report slow speed, the system recognizes congestion and provides an alternate and faster route. The feature also uses an intelligent fusion of information from traffic cameras, speed sensors and conventional traffic messages coming through a radio network. Read More
How to Fix the AT&T Navigator Glitch
Calendar16 Mon, 31 Aug 2009 13:11:48 UTC +00:00
Update: AT&T has posted a new version of Navigator called 1.2i.5, which should the correct the problem, and update properly. Some users of the $10-a-month AT&T Navigator iPhone app may have noticed a little problem. It crashes every time it calculates directions. Don’t worry, you aren’t doing any thing wrong, and the problem is easy to fix. “There is a software glitch. It’s our issue, not Apple’s,” said Mark Siegel, an AT&T spokesman. The problem occurs in an unknown number of phones when people use the update button to get the most recent copy of AT&T Navigator. The fix is a simple one. First, remove your current copy. Don’t worry, you won’t lose your contacts or any other information. To remove it, hold your finger on the AT&T Navigator icon on the phone’s home screen until all of the icons wiggle around. You’ll see a white X in a circle in Read More
If you haven’t heard, the iPhone now supports turn by turn navigation apps. These apps essentially turn your iPhone into one of those portable navigational devices which people refer to as “my navi” or “my GPS”. Overall, the apps are quite good. They work well, they look great, and having a turn by turn navigational system on your cell phone is highly convenient. The Palm Pre, unlike the iPhone which requires purchasing an app from the App Store, comes equipped with one of these apps, and it’s free with the Sprint service plan. The Pre’s app, “Telenav By Sprint”, is quite frankly the perfect turn by turn navigational app for a cell phone, and we compared the 5 most popular American navigational iPhone apps to the Pre app.  Look below for a detailed table comparing the applications on 20 different parameters. Note: For these applications you will 100% need a car charger Read More
I'm happy to report that the leading car navigation apps for the iPhone work surprisingly well. Not only that, but for the next week, there's a clear choice for best app. Until August 31st, Navigon MobileNavigator will cost $70. In my testing, it competed neck and neck with the $100 TomTom, so for the next eight days, it's the best value among the top contenders. But when they're both selling for $100, that TomTom is going to look a lot more tempting. The third app I tested is TeleNav's AT&T Navigator. It's certainly worthy, and has some connected capability that the other two apps here don't, but in the end, the economics are wrong: At $10 per month, it could become frightfully expensive, with no significant added value. These three navigators are the most reputable in the app store (hence their heightened cost). They're all based on software I've used in Read More
TomTom navigation app for $99.99
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Aug 2009 13:56:04 UTC +00:00
Good news for those of you who were ready to throw away $99.99 to get a good navigation app on your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.  At 1.21 GB size, I am guessing the app would no doubt provide the long list of features given in the description.  It is going to be a tough decision whether to grab this or not. I again level my accusation on Apple for not having the refund policy in place. Purchasing something that costs $99.99 but which turns out to be crappy isn’t a very good joke.  What if it the application is not as good as one of those navigation apps in the App Store that cost $35 or $29? Going by brand name isn’t wise all the time.  Well, enough of ranting. TomTom International BV is not charging the way AT&T charges $9.99 monthly for using AT&T Navigator. You gotta pay only one time. Read More
App Review: AT&T Navigator for iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 02 Aug 2009 11:27:18 UTC +00:00
By Chris Vitek, Sunday, Aug 2, 2009 | ) AT&T Navigator [Free with subscription - iTunes link] is the AT&T branded version of Telenav, GPS Turn-By-Turn software provided by AT&T. It is free to download, but requires a $10 monthly subscription paid through your AT&T bill. It also provides maps OTA (over-the-air), downloading any maps and data as needed through the AT&T network. This is both beneficial (takes up less space on the iPhone) and detrimental (can’t use if you have no signal). In general, the app provided solid directions. For the local stuff, it generally gave the same directions that I have “learned” over time to use. For the long distance route, it gave me a path that someone else had recommended but was different from the Google Maps suggested route. When creating a route, you can either choose a destination to drive to (based on recent locations, address, find Read More
Another turn by turn app with voice for the iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Jul 2009 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
Many months ago I received a review copy of G-Map for the iPhone. It had its own maps and turn by turn directions, but no voice guidance, and North was always up. Apple was limiting nav apps at that time, and I had real trouble with G-Map. I couldn't load it on my iPhone. It kept locking up about halfway through the process. Extensive back and forth with the developers in Japan came to nothing, so I gave up. Finally, last April, my colleague Steve Sande was able to load it, and reviewed it for TUAW. Now, with iPhones having new hardware and new software, G-Map [App Store] works and is certainly a competitor to the subscription-based AT&T app. You buy G-Map in one of several editions. G-Map West, at US$34.99, covers the Western States, and G-Map East covers, you guessed it, the Eastern U.S. It is also priced at 34.99. Read More
Road Tested: AT&T Navigator for iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 03 Jul 2009 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
Like my colleague Mel Martin, I've had a serious GPS jones for quite a while. When I was in much better shape, I rode the local trails on a mountain bike with a Garmin eTrex Summit. It didn't have any maps, nor did I really need any for what I was doing. My next GPS receiver was a Garmin GPSmap 60cs that I used for geocaching. It had a nice color screen and some limited maps, but really didn't do a very good job of helping me find my way around town. The third GPS unit was another Garmin, and in this case it was my first real "navigator." I still have it; it's the Garmin nüvi 660, which is an awesome little unit that can help you find your way around the US or Europe (depending on the model you purchase), act as an MP3 player, or even work as Read More

$10 a month???
Jason Murk 1.0 stars
AT&T's plans are already outrageous... And now $10 a month for something that's free on sprint's network? I love apple, but At&t's business practices are gonna make me drop my iPhone for a palm pre!
Already cancelled
Casabooboo 1.0 stars
I thought I'd give it a try - even though a stand alone GPS is about the same price as having this application for a year. What made me cancel was the fact that you have to enter an address - you cant select the "goto" address from your iphone address book. This seems silly to me.
New version in less than 12 hours!
sunracer550 1.0 stars
More and more skeptical about this app. There's already a new version but doesn't address fail to navigate to contacts and no iTunes integration for listening to music while you drive. Misses the mark.
Mediocre app
Aokusman 1.0 stars
The maps are not downloaded to your phone, if you are in an area with no data tha app becomes useless. Might as well just use google maps. Poor app do not give ATT any more money.
WARNING: $10 Monthly Subscription

I was excited to see this released for us AT&T customers, but they want $9.99 a MONTH! Give me a f*ck** break! I might pay $9.99 as a one time fee, but per month! Noooo way! They already cost me an arm and leg just for voice and data for my iPhone. Get real. Wait for Tomtom's turn-by-turn app.
Disappointing
starglider 550 2.0 stars
Just used this app on my way into office and seriously disappointed. Very, very slow to recalc. Also told me to exit that was for a different street than map showed. And why no integration with iTunes so could listen to music and get turn-by-turn voice guide over the stereo when music is muted?
No integration with iPhone contacts?
dingoboy72 2.0 stars
I keep hope I'm missing something obvious but so far, I can't find a way to use the addresses already stored in the Contact application on my iPhone. That's a huge flaw. One of the great features of the iPhone platform is how everything fits together so well. AT&T Navigator breaks that badly.
Not a bad app but misses on several points
HexOnxOnx 3.0 stars
First of all, the maps are clean and accurate. The colorful map dis[lay seen on the app iTunes page only shows up when a route is planned, otherwise, the maps look allot like Google maps.
Are you kidding me?

Seriously? $9.99 a month? the iPhone has GPS built in! why do I need to pay to use it? If I bought a Garmin or a Tom Tom gps unit there is no monthy fee so why is there a monthy fee for this App? This is seriously not cool.
Really?

I have the iPhone 3GS and am using the 3.0 software. You need to have 3G activated when Navigating is in use or the program runs slow. Keep your iPhone plugged in when using app because the battery drains quickly!!!

$10 a month for navigation, you can buy a real GPS for that money, TomTom is coming out with there NON subscription software this summer...
Adequate but far from perfect

Sound stops if you plug in a headset then unplug while still on a trip. Missing points of interest icons (food, gas, etc) on map views. Traffic alerts not functional, at least not in my city. AUDIO IS HORRIBLE, not optimized for the iPhone speaker - unusable without headphones...with headphones makes for unsafe driving.
Does a reasonable job, but has room for improvement

AT&T's Navigator works quite well after testing it out today. The voice Turn-By-Turn needs to be easier to understand, but I think a large part of my inability to understand certain words is due to the speaker on the iPhone, as it has never been great at handling certain tones. Since AT&T offers a 30 day free trial (not advertised — but should be!), it's worth downloading to test it out. I do agree with other reviewers that the price is a bit steep and while this app does not integrate the iPod into it it does have some very handing features, such as: The ability to search for gas stations and see current price along route; Buisinesses on route; Traffic conditions; And a host of other information that all GPS units should have. Since it's free for the first 30 days, why not try it out?
Really Good But...
EvenStephen2000 5.0 stars
it just needs to be easier to search and route in a more convenient way, like the Google Maps App. That only decreases it one star. The other star decrease is for the inability to route by contacts. THAT IS HUGE. You've got to add that feature because it adds so much usefulness. PLEASE DO THAT SOON. In fact, that may get this up to 5 stars immediately. I will definitely do that when that feature is added. I assume it has to be added soon? Everyone wants it!
EXCELLENT APPLICATION! Well done Telenav!!!

This is the best application. Works great on other devices from AT&T. $10/mo is fine as it provides updated maps and information over the air. No need to get software updates. Nice to have for the iPhone finally.
Another rip off by AT&T!

When will they stop! The app is not that great either. Waiting for Tom Tom for a real nav gps. Pass this one by.

Lacks contacts import and current construction. I used this app with the tilt, it's good enough to get you there but needs regular updates. I even called telenav to complain they asked me to too write down all the new streets in Vegas and email them - why should a customer do their job. I hope Tom Tom can over come what telenav will not. I had AT&T Navigator on my Blackberry and used it frequently without problem. This application provides the same functionality and reliability, but there is some room for improvement. Landscape mode would be nice as would integration with Contacts for easier address input. Hopefully the next version will have more features.
