Ads Now Appearing In The $14.99 At Bat 2010 For iPad App
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Jun 2010 21:49:38 UTC +00:00
Apparently $14.99 buys you more than the ability to follow your favorite MLB teams on your iPad while away from home.  It also buys you… ads?  Yes, ads.  MLB.com’s At Bat 2010 for iPad just started displaying ads on the app’s splash page and within the live game simulation page. According to TUAW, the ads only started appearing within the last couple of days.  Having not witnessed them myself — even though I swear I just used the app — I decided to fire At Bat for iPad 2010 up this morning and sure enough, a giant Prudential ad appeared right on the splash screen.  Also, when viewing the live game simulation, two more Prudential ads are firmly placed on the digital right and left field walls.  These wall ads, unlike the initial splash screen ad, are actually tappable, which brings up a pop-up asking you if you want to leave the app Read More
Foul Ball? MLB inserts ads into At Bat 2010 for iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Jun 2010 18:15:00 UTC +00:00
As soon as I tapped my way into MLB At Bat for the Mariners game last night, I couldn't help but notice an ad on the splash page, and other ads on screen on the Game Day desktop. Until now this innovative iPad app had been ad free, and at U.S. $14.99 a year, that made sense. Major League Baseball isn't exactly going to the poor house, with 6.6 billion dollars in revenues last year. MLB has the right to insert ads in the app, but it seems like a small breach of faith to users. There's more. If you already had the MLB iPhone app, you pay again for the iPad version. And so it goes. A nickel here, a dime there. We've heard this song before. Premium apps that start ad-free, and then sneak in the ads once they build up a following. Another example is the CNN app, which Read More
Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime, Read More
Apple adds App of the Week to the App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
This little tidbit was hidden in the rush of iPad news last week, but if you check out the iTunes App Store, you'll notice that Apple has started promoting an official iPhone and iPad App of the Week (presumably every week from now on). They're not diving very deep to find apps for this one (MLB At Bat 2010 is the iPad app, and We Rule is the iPhone choice -- both of those hardly need any more promotion), but since we've heard from developers that Apple promotion really can make or break an app, the addition of another app spotlight can only mean good things for those apps. Critical Thought's David Whatley made this point well at GDC a few weeks ago -- he said that niche outlets (like our own little blog right here) covered his app first, which then gained the attention of Apple, who then promoted it Read More

April 02, 2010   Douglas   App Store, iPad   I’ve found even more great apps custom designed for the iPad. These are apps I plan on installing or would recommend for your new iPad. This time I’ve added links directly to the App Store so if you’re on your iPad, you can just click to bring you right to the app. unfortunately I haven’t found a nice button for the iPad App Store yet so you’ll have to use the iPhone one for now This is the task management app I use on my iPhone and my Mac. Now, having it for my iPad I will be able to stop carrying around a clipboard. I mostly just use the iPhone app for adding tasks when I’m mobile because there’s just not enough screen size to see the full task name. A recent update to the iPhone app did allow for Read More

Only Good for iPad?
jwt0001 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I purchased this app, thinking it would work for both the iPhone and iPad, but it looks like this is only an iPad version. I guess you have to pay separately for the iPhone version. I'm not real happy about this!
Prepared for Baseball
Phills Fan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
True, I haven't taken delivery of my iPad yet and it's also true that the season doesn't begin until Monday, but I'm just getting ready to enjoy my favorite game on what I hope will be my new favorite device. I already own At Bat 2010 for my iPhone so of course I'm curious how MLB has upped the ante with their iPad App. If the hype and screen shots are any indication I expect I'll be more than satisfied. More after I take delivery...
terrible execution
aforty 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Terrible... 1. The program is buggy and slow. It has crashed a few times on me already and simple things like scrolling through text are painfully slow. 2. You need to purchase once for the iPad and once for the iPhone, no universal app. $25 to have MLB with you where ever you go. Too steep! 3. Not all live games are available in the app. I have MLB.TV Premium, yet some of the games are simply not available in the app while I can watch them on my computer right now. What the hell is this about? Seems like a no-brainer. Don't waste your time until they fix these issues, seriously. Not worth $15, not by any stretch of the imagination.
Rip-off
pcallen 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Ok, so I paid $120 for the MLB.tv subscription, which was fine, but now I have to pay $30 more just to use it on my iPhone and iPad? Come on, at least the app should be universal - I should have to pay for two of them!
Fewer features than the iPhone version! R U Kidding Me?
G8CR45H3R 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
There are some glaring omissions here. NO standings or news even? I have to say I'm shocked that this glorified box score cost me $15. I feel like a fool for buying this, as the iPhone version is much better, and I had already paid for that. If there's any way to get my money back, please let me know.
iPhone/iPod Touch app is much better
Renoapple 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app has a lot of potential but is buggy and slow to respond (They had an iPad to develop with it shouldn't be this bad). I bought this app for the sole purpose of watching games on my iPad. I am a MLB.tv subscriber but the video quality on the iPad is terrible. I can't say for certain but it appears that they are using the same video feed that they use on the iPhone, which is very poor once it's blown up. Save your money and do not buy this app until the video improves. If you want a crisp picture buy the iPhone/iPod version.
Not impressed
Bbez56 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Slow and buggy. I am not impressed given the steep price.
DOES NOT UPDATE
bbbjorkman 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I can click on a game and get the current information, but the app doesn't update the game after that. So as far as the app is currently concerned, the Nats are at bat in the second inning -- even though it's already the third. A waste of time and a huger waste of money. To get the app to update a game you have to keep switching between different ballgames. Stay away until they fix this. You'd do better just going to espn.com.
STILL DOES NOT AUTO UPDATE
Livnxxl 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This program still does not work. Please fix it!
An Awesome app, but annual "subscription" is nuts.
HurleysCaddy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've used this app since it first came out for the iPhone/iPod Touch and it was a great app from the start. I have say that the iPad version is a big leap forward and worth the extra $5 from what it was last year for the iPhone version. The biggest issue I have is that the app is good for one season only, and I have a feeling that MLB will continue to raise the price on it year after year. A single price for the app would have earned it 5 stars in my book. My iPad arrived this morning and I was able to load it this afternoon in time to use it while I watched a spring training game. From a functionality standpoint this is app gives you all the relevant info you need live and in-game. The ability to see batters, pitchers and fielders stats with just a tap is just plain awesome! My ballpark has free wifi for season ticket holders so I can follow each game and use this to get detailed stats on every player. I wouldn't be surprised to see a manager with an iPad on his lap during the game running At Bat 2010. It's just that good... Pitch by pitch details are fairly well timed to the TV broadcast delay (about 20 seconds after real-time), so you see the pitches as they happen if watching the game on TV.
Thumbs down for charging twice
cubsbullsbears 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The app is great but charging a loyal customer again and again is just unacceptable. I was ok with paying again for the 2010 iPhone app, after the last season app got outdated but charging again for the iPad app for the same season is just not right. Please consider making this app universal and refunding your loyal customers! Otherwise great app and thanks MLB for being the frontrunner on iPhone and iPad sportscasting!
Has potential but not ready
ApolloEagle 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
V1.0.1 -- After this update, MLB is much more performant. However, it did crash after being open for about 3 mins. A second run was not able to reproduce. The scrolling problems are gone. MLB needs to continue updating, but this is a good first step. Changed from 2 stars to three. v1.0 -- I was really looking forward to using this app with the season about to start. I don't mind the $15 price, although I think the MLB.TV subscribers should get it for free (in app purchase for everyone else to upgrade?). That being said, I am very disappointed in the performance an robustness. MLB was one of the first to start working on their iPad app. It is obvious from the way Apple is pushing this that they had Apple's ear and assistance along the way; nonetheless, the app is buggy, slow, and doesn't update (for example, today is the real opening day for all clubs, and it says no data available!!!!). MLB shame on you for rushing this out and not making sure its solid. Apple, really, this is the app of the week?
No no features from iPhone app...
Bigd4316 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I feel like I've been ripped off. This app offers no new features over the iPhone app and they're charging $15 for each of them?? If you have the iPhone app already don't get sucked in and buy this one. You'll regret it!
Awesome
Todd84 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Ignore the negative reviews. The app works great and is a great companion when watching the game. This app is an absolute must-buy for anyone with an MLB.tv subscription and an iPad. VERSION 1.0.1: New update does fix some of the scrolling issues and I like how the in-game info is set to automatically be open. Those that say there aren't standings just don't know how to use the app (cogwheel > standings). And those that are complaining about the app not updating, change your settings to update every 15 seconds. While the first update was just a minor one, it gives me confidence that MLB will keep updating this app to make it better as the season goes along. I would really love to see stats for league leaders and be able to follow a custom list of players (fantasy). Those two features would really make this app amazing!
Great app
Antonio C 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I just purchased it and it looks really great. It is slow at times and I'm very surprised that there are no standings. How is that possible?
Not sure it's worth it.
Jared_Pirate 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I purchased this for the iphone last year and again this year and assumed at it would work on the iPad as well. I was incorrect. I find it to be a ripoff that I had to purchase this for the iPad, iPhone and the computer over MLB.tv as well. The games are not high def, but that could be a result of the games being Spring Training feeds. I guess we'll see tonight. Still the app is great for my baseball fix. I live away from my favorite teams and this allows me to watch the Reds and Twins anywhere I have wifi.
amazing!
Darald 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I waited to buy the HD version for my iPad until they updated it. It's great! I just signed up for the MLB premium package and have been very impressed with the video streaming. I'm not stuck watching the Reds any more. I can watch all my Tiger's games. I love it!
Getting a Bit Fed Up
KCK Enterprises 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have now purchased season tickets, an iPhone app, an At Bat Gameday subscription and now this iPad app. How many times will I have to pay for the same thing ? On top of that, the iPad app is very buggy. Due to the negative comments, I waited to purchase until an update was posted. I have 1.0.1 and it seems as though many if not most of the reported issues have not been addressed. Took less than two minutes for the app to crash (Streaming audio seemed to cause this). Now, I wouldn't complain really, but MLB has FORCED me to buy the iPad app as the Gameday site just comes up as an ad for the iPad app. Either let me use the gameday subscription I paid for or friggin fix the problems with the iPad app. I give this three stars because if they work out the issues, it will be a great app.
Embarrassing
ecn0nce 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Slow, choppy, and all the features of a cow. Who should be more ashamed: MLB for their terrible outsourcer and apparently non-existent QC; or Apple's marketers, for clearly NOT having audited the software before hyping it so vociferously? I can understand that there's a rush to meet deadlines, but this is a total, inexcusable f-bomb of a program. I am embarrassed to have wasted $15 on this tripe. If you are honestly considering purchasing this app: please wait for at least a few upgrades and some price reduction before buying.
Tech Demo
Edouble32 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What is this a tech demo? This app is one of the least polished of all the launch apps. Scrolling through text or screens is incredibly slow and sluggish. At $15 this app is a straight up rip off. BUYER BEWARE.
Audio issue
NewYorksOwn 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Game audio lags behind at a ridiculous rate. Please correct this..
So far... A slow disappointment
smadad 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I have bought everything MLB has put out for iPhone, and it s been great. That's why I bought this without much thought. Sadly it's pretty terrible. Not nearly the polish and features of it's iPhone brother. Worst of all it's the only thing to make my iPad lag! All that said, I'm sure MLB will fix this app. They have always been great about fixing their apps and continuing to add value throughout the season. My advice: either wait for a new version, or if you love the MLB iPhone app, buy now and I'm sure it will only get better.
Unreliable and short on features
dekode 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
At this point this app is all style and no substance. Play by play is entirely unreliable. When it is working the data is wayyy out of sync with audio stream. No ability to change views like in iPhone version and otherwise lacking a lot of features that are present on the smaller screen. Hopefully we'll be seeing lots of new features soon but for now save your $15.
Needs to be synced Properly
Scott A Mahler 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
My biggest complaint is more with the audio. The audio is about a minute behind the display on the app. I hope they get that part fixed
Don't buy this if you have the iPhone version already
KaiaDad 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is an awful first version. Lacks many of the best features of the iPhone version. Also very buggy, and pitch updates seem to stall or not work.. It is a total rip-off that they are charging for this and not making it universal.. Apple should definitely not feature this app until it works. The iPhone version is awesome, iPad version stinks..
