iOS developer David Smith has been posting iOS version stats for his Universal app Audiobooks [Direct Link]. Smith gets about 100,000 weekly downloads to both his paid and free versions and believes it is a statistically meaningful data set. With the launch of iOS 5.1 on March 7th, 2012, Smith has been tracking the adoption rate which he suspected would be faster than in the past due to the availability of over the air (OTA) iOS updates. Indeed, after only 5 days after its initial release, Smith found that 50% of his OTA-eligible customers were already at iOS 5.1. Now, after 15 days, he's found that 77% of OTA-eligible iOS customers have upgraded to the latest version. Audiobooks is, as the title states, an audiobook player from the Librivox foundation. With this app, you can listen to free audiobooks on your iPhone or iPod Touch. When you first open the app, you will be able to discover new books or play those that you already have downloaded. Under the "Discover" section is where you can browse books by Popularity, Authors, Titles, or have the app select a random audiobook for you. Tapping on any of these will present a list of books or authors for you to choose from. Once you have decided on a book you would like to listen to, tapping on the "play" button will begin the download of the first chapter. Wow for FREE?!?!?!?! This a terrific app, it's super easy to use and you can search by title or author. The surprise me tab is great also, it has introduced me to titles I would never have found. The only thing I can think if that I would like to see is the ability to move the books around in my library instead of them being in the order I downloaded them. Everything else is perfect, keep up the great work! A+A+A+

I mean it's free. At first I wondered why this company would offer an app for free that contains many audiobooks that they are trying to sell. Now I see why. You never no wich volunteer reader you will get on these librivox recordings and some of them are really bad. but once again: it's free. I think it's worth having and aside from the occasional bad reader with a squirrely voice, it's a pretty good app.

It amazes me that this app doesn't have a higher average score. It is an amazing collection of classics read by real humans. There are not going to be many modern texts, of course, as they are still under copyright and could not be freely distributed like this. Duh. My minor suggestions for improvement would be the ability to download a book without it starting to play right away. That's a small beef, though, as you can always simply start it over, but I enjoy perusing. Also, categories of texts would be a great improvement. Overall, though, this is an amazing app and a testament to the volunteers that put this content together. Bravo.

This is really good!! I am so happy because in my language arts class we are learning about the odyssey and we had to read the book. So I looked it up on this app and it was there. So instead of me reading it I just have to listen to it. You should get this app because it has really old classical books and for mostly when u get in high school they make u read classics. And so far all the books I needed to read were on here yay!

Streaming only renders this app useless for me.

I loved this app because I could listen to audiobooks on the bus to work and while waiting for the bus. It could do this because the files were stored locally. Was a great app, not anymore. Now that it's streaming only, it's totally useless because it requires WIFI and can't store audiobooks at all. Another great app and public domain effort bites the dirt. So sad to see it's demise after so many put so much effort into reading chapters. :(

Disappointing update...

The update did say the application had changed to "streaming" rather than downloading content, but I tried it anyway. What a mistake!! Besides needing to be tethered to the Internet (which I cannot do with an iPod touch), the update also added a very intrusive advertisement (which is difficult to avoid hitting by accident). I understand advertisers are the reason why many apps are free, but it could have been done more tastefully.

I liked this application before this update.

I wish that I had reviewed this application before the update. I would have given it 4 stars. I was able to download the books onto my iPod Touch and listen to them wherever I was. Now, I am shackled to a WiFi network. I can get that through my desktop computer. Please put the Download option back onto the application. I will never be able to get through a WHOLE book by streaming it. PLEASE.

I loved this application due to its wide range of free books to listen to and ability to listen to them anywhere due to the way that the application downloaded the whole book to the iphone. The newest upgrade now relies on streaming capabilities and will cut off in the middle of a chapter because it looses the connection. This is horrible for me due to the fact that I listen to these books the most at work where I have very spotty service. PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!

This is a poorly designed app: books are listed only in alphabetical order, making discovery difficult. That is, you can't browse by category or interest (free, best sellers, fiction/non fiction, etc.) Audible is a far better alternative in my opinion: you can browse by category/interest; you get artwork upfront with a summary and a sample; and the list prices are on par with Audiobook's. Audible also offers a subscription.

Great app, needs to remember location

I love this. Many readers are excellent. My only complaint is that if you quit it entirely it starts you at the beginning of the chapter you were on regardless of how far you were into that chapter.Also it lost my books after iOS 5.0.1 upgrade. After requesting them again they reappeared and I didn't have to re-download.It doesn't always continue to play in background for some activities.These are small matters and don't detract much.
