Das US-Buchhandelsunternehmen ‘Borders‘ vermeldet Zahlungsunfähigkeit – nicht nur umgangssprachlich auch als ‘Bankrott’ bezeichnet. Das Fortune-500-Unternehmen ist nach Barnes & Noble die zweitgrößte Handelskette für Bücher in Nordamerika. Bloomberg News berichtet, das 200 der insgesamt 642 Filialen im Zuge der ‘Reorganisation’ “augenblicklich geschlossen werden” – 75 weitere Geschäfte könnten folgen. “Frische Kredite über 505 Millionen Dollar” sollen jetzt helfen. Neben dem Preiskampf mit Online-Versandhändlern wie Amazon (in den USA gibt es keine Buchpreisbindung) verzeichnete man durch geschwächte CD- und DVD-Verkäufe erhebliche Verluste (und kompensierende Digital-Verkäufe). Ende der 90er-Jahre, Anfang 2000, räumte man den silbernen Scheiben viel Verkaufsfläche ein. Des Weiteren hat man es bislang nicht geschafft, den Fuß in die digitale Vertriebstür zu bekommen. Barnes & Noble is still one of the most prominent front ends in the book business. They have a wide selection of great books to choose from and provide a wonderful experience while browsing. They now have released an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that tries to culminate everything Barnes & Noble into one handy app. Users can utilize the app to view the bestsellers, new releases, and check out recommendations and reviews of different books. They can find the nearest location of stores along with information on the store's offerings and upcoming events. Amazingly well done. Snap feature is truly next level. No doubt that this app will lead to many more books being bought. Would love to see a wish list that I can keep on my phone or email, as well as a 'recommend similar' that could provide an educated guess at similar books, authors or product when browsing product pages or authors. I'd buy way more books if I could easily find books similar to ones I've already enjoyed, especially when I've read all books by a particular author and looking for a new author or series to get into.

Any time I hear about a good book, I l can look it up (or photograph it), learn more about it, and find out which stores in my area have a copy. And that's just the basics. With author interviews, book reviews and more, I can get great recommendations. I recommend this for anyone that likes to read.

What can I say?! I am incredibly blown away by how beautifully this app works--especially the snapping feature! Wow! I am an avid reader that always looks for a deal. This app is already helping save me money. I was in a small bookstore today and wanted to see if I could get this book for less. I snapped a picture of it, and back came a return that showed my local Barnes and Noble had it for less! I bought it and then picked it up after work. Wow--talk about a seamless experience. Try this app--it will be your new favorite app. No doubt.

This is a good app, not perfect, but good. I like that I can find my local store and get updates on the upcoming events! It would be a lot better if you could log into your account. And I would like it better if the Bestsellers option had the choice of which genre or category (ex: childrens, young adult, adult, non fiction, etc.). Other than that, it's really easy to navigate and is useful. If the things I mentioned before were added, it would definitely be 5 star. Good work (:

Absolutely incredible. The UI is better than some of the Apple native apps, and yet it maintains Barnes&Noble's signature style. Yes, there have been complaints about the fact that you cannot log into an account - you are sent to Safari to complete any order, etc. (Which I don't understand - it should be integrated directly into the app. Everything else is so great, why stop just short of perfection? And if you absolutely MUST send us to Safari, them at least have an iPhone-formated page...) But this is the only down side to the entire application. Flawless integration of many amazing features. And on the first try. B&N, you make me proud to shop at your stores. Other developers, beware. This is how it should be done.

Perfect but for one fatal flaw

This is a terrific app, very quick and easy to use. It gives you many ways to find and purchase your title. However, this app lacks one very important (and rather simple) tool. "Other Formats." As a B&N employee I can asure you that virtually every popular title these days will come out almost simultaneously as and audio book and a hardcover. And the audiobook will be available as an MP3 download or as a physical set of CDs. Most popular books that have been on the shelf for a while have half a dozen different formats. However, when you search for a title, or use the slick snapshot option, your results may be the CD when you in fact want to purchase the hardcover, or the hardcover instead of the paperback. I can already see customers completing their purchase through this app and being disappointed when they get their product in hand, not having seen the tiny type identifying their book as a CD audiobook. What's needed (and should be quite simple to implement) is a link to all of the various formats for any given title. Add this (and maybe a way to manage your membership settings) and you have a virtually perfect app.

No ability to store your online account?

I do not understand why e-tailers make iPhone apps that don't sync to your online account. In this case, I also don't understand why it brings you to Safari to check out. It would be much more useful if your account information were stored in the app and check out happened in the app as well. I'm pretty certain this will be fixed in later versions, but it doesn't make sense to release an app without basic functionality like that. This could be a great app, but it's not there yet.
