NaturalMotion Games has unveiled their newest iOS offering called Icebreaker Hockey. Picture NaturalMotion’s highly successful arcade-style football game Backbreaker 2: Vengeance [99¢] and apply it to ice hockey, and you have a pretty good idea what to expect from Icebreaker Hockey. Players will race down the ice towards the net from a third person perspective, avoiding hits from opposing players using deke and spin maneuvers in an effort to get a clean shot on goal. This arcade-style of gameplay worked really well in the Backbreaker series on iOS, and seems like a natural fit for the sport of ice hockey. Here’s a set of screenshots from Icebreaker Hockey which is looking quite impressive: The game is being developed by Digital Legends Entertainment and published by NaturalMotion, and will also use their advanced “morpheme” animation engine to provide smooth and realistic animations to the players in the game. Icebreaker Hockey will come Read More

So, you got roped into hosting  Super Bowl XLV party today and you’re having one of those Edvard Munch “The Scream” moments as you realize the big game is only a few hours away. Serves you right for having that wicked huge studio, that 1080p high-definition TV, and the kind of personality that allows this sort of thing to happen to you. But, hey, I’ll help you help yourself by pointing out a few apps that’ll smooth out some of the party planning wrinkles, educate you on the Packers or Steelers, or just give you a sense of what the hell Super Bowl XLV is all about. THE SEASONThe NFL doesn’t like to put its programming on the App Store until the season is over, so there’s no solid way to play catch-up on the regular NFL season without watching several ESPN or NFL Network pre-Bowl broadcasts. However, you can watch Read More

Backbreaker 2

Backbreaker was probably one of the most fun arcade football games I have ever played on the iPhone. It reminded me so much of NFL Blitz with it’s smooth controls and close perspective. The latest in the apparent series is Backbreaker 2: Vengeance. It’s aptly named as this time you will be given the option to run the ball or to throw your weight into a ball carrier. This is a nice twist as scoring touchdowns did get boring after a while in the original game. With this new perspective also comes the jump feature which throws yet another challenge in your way to scoring points. The controls have pretty much stayed the same from the last version and one very large complaint I had right away was the poor graphics. Don’t get me wrong, the game looks great, but it wasn’t optimized for the iPhone 4 and looked pretty muddy Read More

Most football video games nowadays go all out on features -- you can play any position, just coach fantasy-style, or even design plays in some games. But NaturalMotion's Backbreaker series for iOS goes the other way. It's just good old tackling and running, boiled down into an arcade mode designed to show off the dynamic tackling and motion built into the engine. Backbreaker 2: Vengeance is really impressive. If you're a hardcore football fan you'll want a more full-featured game, but if you just love dodging and diving into players on the football field, you'll really enjoy the wave after wave of points-based attacks here. Especially on iPhone 4, the presentation is great, with smooth and beautiful graphics and very responsive controls. This is the second in the series, and it shows -- NaturalMotion is really learning how to do cool stuff with their engine. There are also tweaks to moves Read More
