According to the New York Times, Apple has rejected Sony's Reader app from the App Store, and the Times speculates Amazon's popular Kindle app may also get the axe in the near future. The supposed reasoning behind this move is that Apple has decided apps can no longer sell content or allow access to content sold outside the App Store or via Apple's in-app purchasing mechanism. If true, this is a highly questionable move on Apple's part, and one that seems pretty difficult to justify. Apple could potentially paint this as protecting consumers from malicious content (i.e., viruses) or unscrupulous app developers looking to bilk users out of money, then say that it's just applying the same rules to everyone by disallowing "outside content" apps like Sony Reader. As part of its rebranding program, Barnes & Noble have replaced their B&N eReader app for the iPhone with Nook for iPhone, a variation on the same application that’s available for the iPad.  The new software has several improvements over its predecessor, all of which has been added to the iPad version too. The app remains free to download, with the option to check out free samples and to download a variety of free classic eBooks too, although most other eBooks have a price tag attached.  It has been reworked to support iOS 4’s multitasking along with improved resolution on the iPhone 4, and happily syncs with your iPad or computer based Barnes & Noble software too. The new Nook e-reading app for the iPhone has finally arrived. Recently, Barnes & Noble announced that it was rebranding its eReading software across various platforms and calling it Nook. As part of that evolution, the company has released a "next-generation" Nook for iPhone application that incorporates many of the features found in its Nook for iPad app. At the same time, it's updated Nook for iPad to include some new features, including one that allows you to rate e-books from within the app. Users had been requesting the feature, the company said.
