NetherRealm Would Like To Do More iOS Stuff
Calendar16 Tue, 31 Jan 2012 16:27:27 UTC +00:00
Don't take this as a shocker, but it sounds like Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm is open to the idea of branching out beyond its resuscitated IP as well as exploring other platforms like iPad and iPhone. In an interview with GameSpot, head honcho Ed Boon talked about the future of NetherRealm and where it might go, noting that it, of course, isn't done with Mortal Kombat, yet is down with creating new experiences across multiple platforms. Here's the relevant stuff for us from the wide-reaching interview: GS: NetherRealm recently released Arkham City Lockdown for the iOS. Will NetherRealm continue to work on iOS projects, and what was it like developing it compared to a console game? EB: It's surprisingly similar, but for not as long a time period. We're working in the Unreal environment, both in our console games as well as the iOS games, so there's a familiarity there. We Read More

'Batman Arkham City Lockdown' is On Sale for $2.99
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Jan 2012 14:00:15 UTC +00:00
Last month, after basically zero pre-release hype, we were pretty surprised to see Batman Arkham City Lockdown [$2.99] pop up in the App Store. Perhaps even more surprising was that NeatherRealm Studios, developer of the recent (and excellent) Mortal Kombat reboot on consoles, was behind the iOS title. And, even more surprising still, Batman Arkham City Lockdown was actually pretty freaking awesome. It was built using the Unreal Engine, so the graphics were definitely up to snuff. And the gameplay took a tiny page out of the Infinity Blade handbook, having you face off against baddies in one-on-one battles using swipe controls to dish out the pain. The combat didn't quite have the complexity of an Infinity Blade, but it was fun nonetheless. Now, Batman Arkham City Lockdown has just received its first ever sale, dropping from its normal $5.99 price point down to $2.99 for a limited time. If you're Read More

Maybe you're addicted to FIFA Soccer 12 (US$0.99) or spend time in meetings at work playing Grand Theft Auto III ($2.99) with the sound turned off. Are you the Dark Knight playing Batman Arkham City Lockdown ($5.99), or do you prefer to play classic board games like Scrabble and Monopoly (both sale priced at Read More
Daily iPhone App: Batman Arkham City Lockdown
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 13:07:00 UTC +00:00
When I first talked to Netherrealm Studios' Ed Boon about Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, I told him it was very "Infinity Blade-esque," and even he readily agreed. The game is an iOS version of Batman: Arkham City, which liberally borrows assets from the console title (including graphics, models, and audio), and gameplay from Infinity Blade. The game has you fighting various enemies with swipe attacks and various tapping motions in one-on-one combat. But while Infinity Blade is a well-cooked steak of a game, requiring finesse and care, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is much more like fast food -- it's quick, relatively cheap and less refined. That's not a bad thing, however. Infinity Blade tells its stories in a well-rendered world, but Batman:ACL shoots between a menu and a series of stages, in which you have to fight a series of goons to complete each stage and move on. By swiping in Read More

"Adam West? Sorry, never heard of him." Why did Batman cross his legs? Because he had to go to the bat-room. I know, I know. But that joke kills in a room full of 7-year-olds. Speaking of Batman (you knew I had a reason for the potty humor), there's good news for fans of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, two of the top-rated console games of 2009 and 2011, respectively: the Dark Knight just went mobile. Warner Bros. Entertainment has unveiled Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, an official iOS spinoff of the console version. It's $5.99. Built on the famed Unreal engine, Lockdown is sure to draw comparisons to Infinity Blade II, that other visually thrilling iOS game. But the former is darker, grittier, and much more combat-heavy--just like the Bat himself. Combat consists of a series of one-on-one melees, culminating with a face-off against a familiar villain: Two-Face, the Joker, etc. Read More
Mortal Kombat creator talks about adapting Batman for iOS
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Dec 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
I got to meet up with Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon on the red carpet at last weekend's VGAs, and rather than talking about the popular console fighting series, we instead talked about an iOS title: Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, which Boon's Netherrealm Studios developed in conjunction with Warner Brothers and the developer behind the console Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady Studios. Boon says the game's release snuck up on him just as much as it did iOS customers. "It's one of our first iOS games," he says, "so we were doing it, and the whole process of iOS games, they don't promote them leading up to the launch, it's just boom, and you hear about it going out. But we've been working on it for quite a while." Netherrealm has shared assets with Rocksteady before, and the iOS game makes use of models from the console game (both are rendered with Read More

Batman Arkham City Lockdown Review

+ Universal App $5.99 Our Review By Jason Wadsworth on December 9th, 2011 Rating: :: FUN AND BRUISES Dole out some bone-jarring justice in this action combat game. Developer: Price: $5.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4S Graphics / Sound Rating: Game Controls Rating: Gameplay Rating: Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: With the proliferation of iOS games built in sophisticated 3D graphics engines like the Unreal engine, there have been more titles every day making gamers stop and scratch their heads in wonder at a new level of graphical fidelity not before available on their devices. Batman Arkham City Lockdown, the iOS counterpart to the console game Batman Arkham City, is a title that showcases just how much developers learned about programing software for the iOS hardware in order to squeeze ever more impressive visuals out of the platform. What’s more, this game is much more than just a Read More
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are games that finally got gamers to believe that not only can superhero games be good, but if developed by the right studio, it can sell millions and be in the running for Game of the Year by many a publication. Those of you who are looking for more Batman goodness can now look to your iOS device as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment have released Batman: Arkham City Lockdown. First of all, you should be aware the developer behind Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is NetherRealm Studios and not the developer of the console & PC versions of Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady Studios. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t in capable hands as if you played the recently released console version of Mortal Kombat, then you’ll know just what Read More
Holy jeez! We're pretty used to the typical Wednesday onslaught of new releases in the App Store, but today has been a truly insane undertaking. Between Batman making a surprise drop from the shadows and into the App Store with Arkham City Lockdown, the exciting OnLive iOS client finally seeing the light of day (soon anyway), and the normal barrage of new releases we usually see every week, it's been a wild roller coaster ride of iOS craziness. To top it off, Eli is out in Finland hobnobbing with The Mighty Eagle, ensuring that Brad and I are up to our ear balls in busy work. It's all good though, as I arose from my normal coma-like state to spend some quality time with Batman, and Brad has been pumping out posts with the same vigor that I'd imagine he pumps iron with. At any rate, that should explain why you're Read More
