10 Amazing Musical Instrument iPhone Apps
Calendar16 Sun, 11 Apr 2010 18:59:19 UTC +00:00
As anyone who has browsed the App Store will know, musical instrument apps don’t have their own category, but are in fact spread out across “Music” and “Entertainment,” alongside what seems like an unholy number of fart- and burp-themed efforts. To separate the proper musical apps from some less desirable offerings, we’ve highlighted 10 great iPhone apps that provide a darn good musical experience on your handset. Whether you’re looking to strum, blow, shake, tap or hum, here are the apps that’ll do it for you, and all of them offer more than just a novelty experience. With this many musical instruments available for $2 or less, why not get a few friends together and start a band? iBone quite simply offers a masterclass in musical instrument design for the iPhone. It works on so many different levels. You can pick it up and have fun playing, but if you know Read More

Every so often something hits the App Store that is interesting but difficult to explain. At the same time, it is enjoyable to use, and you tip your hat to the people who thought it up, even if it has no real practical use. Mujik [App Store] is a free (for now) app that allows you to create musical sounds by opening books on a shelf and chasing dust mites across the page. It's a charming app, with interesting graphics, and I was able to create a passable tune. If your taste runs to Mike Oldfield or Brian Eno (who has his own app for creating music on the iPhone) you know the kinds of sounds I am talking about. You do have some control over the instruments, the pitch, and you can balance the ensemble, if that is the word, by turning off any of the 3 channels. The lads Read More

Very unique. Worth the money.

Great app, I'm happy to see a usable instrument. I have some requests:
Crackling Sounds
Andrew_G 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app.
Almost there but not yet...
Bucks27 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Would be a great app if they fix the crackling in the 2G touch. It makes it really hard to be relaxed when the crackling is so loud!!!
Crackles not too relaxing
Thirtyfivewest 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Crackling sound on 2g touch ruins this awesome app
Pretentious Nonsense
ljmjag 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is not a music application. It's not even interesting. It's the application equivalent of filling up a bunch of wine glasses with water and hitting them with a knife. Interesting for about 45 seconds - add another minute of interest if you make the water in the glasses different colors and you like pretty colors. Ooohhh it must be great because Brian Eno helped - guess what - his last interesting work since his Roxy Music days was with the Talking Heads and U2 almost 20 years ago. He phoned this one in, folks. For anyone who is on the fence about this application, let me give you an example of what you will get for your money - ready - touch iPhone - "ting"; touch it several more times - "ting, ting, tiiing, ting, tiing tiing tiiing - wait about 30 seconds and then the tinging will stop. Repeat ad nauseum = dull.
AMAZING! One of the most unique iPhone music apps available.
zackarooey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The concept is simple. You're presented with a subtle drone. You tap on areas of the screen to create sounds and make loops. You can tap different areas to create layers. The end result is a beautiful and somewhat relaxing. The presentation is also amazing with all the unique colors and shapes. You can clearly tell Brian Eno had a part in this. If you're a fan of ambient music or just enjoy making fun making sounds on your iPhone, this app is for you. I can't recommend it highly enough!
Most unique music app yet
peter doubt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very cool, fun, creative and relaxing. If you dig Eno you'll love this. It's like an audio/visual psychedelic Valium....and just as addictive.
Worthless
pleskorb 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've personally spent years making generative music as well as music with bands. I have to say that this app has no generative qualities other than looping and decaying what you play. And to make it even more boring, there is only one bell like sound to play with. Not worth any price. I feel scammed. I just discovered the another generative app called RjDj and it actually does what it claims. Very cool.
Great app but unusable on the itouch 2G
bgconnolly 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an awesome application but is not usable at all with the state of the audio on the itouch 2G. There is a constant crackle (that other users have already reported) that makes the output seriously annoying to listen to. This bug ruins the application for the user. That's me. I'm the user in this situation.
Genuinely Overrated
Hippdip123 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Basically a very simple music loop program with iphone as piano/keyboard input. Just because briano eno graced this program with his otherwise brilliant name doesn't make it any good.
Sounds like old crap radio on new touch
Gsikora3258 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a pretty cool app. Actaully spent several minutes messing around making some interesting music. The #1 issue is the static noise and crackling and poping. This needs to be fixed. It sounds terrible through the internal speaker and is still heard through headphones if plugged in. I would give this 4 stars if it wasn't for that issue.
Hoping for an update
ParadiseAce 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the concept of this app however the audio output is not good on the touch. Docked or with headphones Crackling sound is constant.
Crackling disappointment
guidude 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Like others with iPod Touch 2G, I am getting the static-y crackling noise, which completely defeats the purpose of this application. I want a refund, or a fix, but the App Store provides no possibility for either. My review jumps to 4 stars once they fix that.
Doesn't work with my 2G Touch...
ne57 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
As many others have noted, audio on 2G touch has constant repetitive clicking and crackling sounds, making it next to useless. I emailed the developer at the published support email address, but no response.... Concept is great, but it doesn't work.
Not really worth $3.99
Consider me wrecked 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bought it, but got bored in a few minutes. Some percussion would be nice. I had assumed this was some kind of looping app. A metronome wwould be nice. Also, it appears to be 3/3 time - would be nice if 4/4 was an option. In addition, buying it over wi-fi seems to have caused major syncing problems with the phone. Long backup time after buying this app.
beautiful
wilcothedog 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this app is really gorgeous.. you can easily get swept away while playing it. really relaxing, but also really moving and fun to play! i highly recommend it, money well spent! what brian eno said about this app being like a music box, made a lot more sense after playing with it.. it's gorgeous. really well done! i hope that future updates will bring a way to flip on and off the background drone whenever you wish, not that i don't love the drones, they're really gorgeous, it would just add some dynamic to be to create sections without it and bring it back in! and some sort of tempo light or measurement for the loops would be fun to be more precise with the looping.. BUT this app is beautiful and simple, which is exactly what makes it so charming.
Thanks
jaybreakerhouse 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I work in the industry with bands that can only dream of having the privilage of working with Eno. This is a perfect example of why people feel that way. I have used this app to put myself to sleep and wake myself up since I bought it. Laying in bed with it next to my head, looping very soft and meditative arrangements. It's done for me what yoga bells try to do, for $100 less a month. This app is a must have and once again pushes the bar for the iPhone, mastering simplicity with functionality. PS: I am a musician and this is the only music app I own.
Crackling sound fixed.
Alec Armbruster 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
Now I can relax without:
Work of Art
FrunobulaxD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I would expect Brian Eno to create something this amazing. It does this app an injustice to place it in the music category. iTunes needs a new app category entitled "Works of Art"
Pleasant, fun, not amazing
wootdave 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
While it's obvious there is a lot going on behind the scenes, what this comes down to is some enjoyable simple interactivity that ultimately leaves you with a soothing, repeating ambient rhythm. Nice enough, but hard to truly call genius.
Eno on iPhone... enough said!
esotericmixer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'll admit that I'm biased, because I think that Brian Eno is a God, and love just about all of his work. But even so... this program, for less than FOUR dollars, not only gives you an original Eno composition, but allows you to create your own version of it. Electronica and especially Ambient music fans need to get this. It's also a great tool for stress relief--just try it out and you'll see what I mean.
Crackling Needs to be addressed ASAP or refund our money.
CrashingBlue 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is i serious problem and the developers need to fix asap.
Another useless gimicky "music" app.
The_Reaper 1.0 stars Version: 1.02
Wish I could have a refund. After all the rave reviews I decided to give this a try. Turns out to be useless and boring after the first minute. There's nothing groundbreaking here. Samples are triggered according to the x position of your tap, then looped in a fixed tempo. Probably some randomization of the initial x value to "evolve" the sound. Seriously, nothing amazing concept-wise or programming wise. You can't effectively control what notes you're playing, so all it does is create random "musical" pieces.
THE CRACKLING ON IPOD TOUCH RENDERS THIS APP USELESS!!!
brutek 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I read reviews several weeks ago stating this app crackles with iPod Touch. I just got my iPod Touch and was so excited about the app I forgot about these reviews and shelled over money (my fault) for a useless app. That said, it has so much promise that I hope the developer fixes this. I will be pursuing my money back from the developer with the end result hoping for them to fix this and provide a free update.
Excellent program
Lieutenant Beefheart 5.0 stars Version: 1.02
If you are a fan of Brian Eno's ambient albums, this really should be a no-brainer must-buy. It is well conceived, with a simple, elegant interface, and an almost hypnotic, ever-changing/evolving audio output. It's like having a tiny Eno sitting in your living room fiddling with an electric vibraphone.
