Top Ten New iPad Digital Magazines
Calendar16 Wed, 03 Aug 2011 14:44:38 UTC +00:00
The iPad is great for reading not only eBooks but digital magazines too, and the list of available titles is growing all the time.  In addition to our own personal favorite, Project, and Zinio, where digitized editions of popular newsstand magazines can be purchased; here are ten recently released iPad magazine apps which show just how much this genre is diversifying on Apple’s tablet. Guys can now know what girls want thanks to the release of Cosmo for Guys, an iPad magazine filled with advice, tips and guides to help you become ‘a trusted authority on women’.  Sounds hideous, but it’s there if you want it.  The app is free, but you’ll have to pay a $1.99 monthly or $19.99 yearly subscription to actually read the magazine.  Free. Previously only for reading books purchased through Barnes and Noble, the latest version of the NOOK reader has added magazines and newspapers, with Read More
Amazon and Barnes & Noble both introduced new features to their respective iOS applications on Monday, even as they were required to remove links in their apps to outside storefronts. Kindle now supports viewing of over 100 of its newspaper and magazine titles, and Barnes & Noble has announced that Nook for iPad will soon offer access to over 175 digital periodicals. Because of the timing of this feature introduction, I’d say it was possibly a negotiated concession by the e-booksellers, won in exchange for the removal of the outside store links. I’ve been able to try out Amazon’s implementation of magazine and newspaper viewing, which went live yesterday. It does add a nice splash of color to otherwise text-heavy content, but if you’re looking for interactivity, you should probably look elsewhere. The periodicals offer more in terms of user interface advantages on the iPad then they do on the Kindle, Read More

It’s travel season. Maybe you’ve got a cross-atlantic flight planned, a long drive ahead and need to keep the kids occupied, your secluded getaway has a TV made during the Kennedy administration, or you just have a long train ride to work every day. I’m going to show you different ways you can get all sorts of entertainment on your iPad. iTunes. The easiest way to get video content onto your iPad is to simply buy or rent it from the iTunes Store. You can initiate the transaction on either your computer or your iPad. Keep in mind if you copy a rental to your iPad, it won’t be available for watch on your computer, and if you rent a video on your iPad, it can’t be copied to the Mac. 4 Places to Get Free eBooks for Your iDevice, Legitimately

Did you know that it’s possible to read on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch? Crazy, right? Like anyone reads anymore. Seriously, though, reading is one of our favorite pastimes. We usually enjoy using the Kindle, because it’s lightweight and very easy to use. The eInk screen is pleasant to look at. No complaints from us. Thing is, there are also plenty of iPads out there. Why not give people something to read? Know that we didn’t give iBooks its own spot on the list as that’s pretty much a giveaway. We’re looking at some of the places to get books for those who enjoy reading on the iPad. Hit the jump to take a look.   Amazon has the most popular eReader, and that means they offer the most books. Thing is, we are looking for the free stuff. Just hit up Amazon’s Kindle store and ask it to Read More
US-Buchhandelskette ‘Borders’ meldet Insolvenz an
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Feb 2011 09:10:14 UTC +00:00
Read More
Posted 02/01/2011 at 6:14am | by J.R. Bookwalter It seems like every move that Apple makes results in a firestorm of speculation -- an unfortunate side effect of being a company veiled in secrecy. Cupertino’s latest move is the rejection of a Sony Reader app, which has everyone sounding the death knell for other e-reader apps on iOS. The New York Times is reporting that Apple has rejected an official Sony Reader app, apparently because the app allows users to circumvent the App Store and purchase e-books directly from Sony’s own ecosystem. Unfortunately for those reporting this as news, Apple has had this policy in place pretty much from the beginning, which is why Amazon’s Kindle app, for instance, takes you to Mobile Safari to shop for e-books in the first place. What the reports are mostly focusing on is the last bit of this second paragraph from The Times report: Read More
Did you see those Barnes & Noble ads over the holidays where they were showing off those nice interactive color children's books that run on the company's US$249 NOOKcolor e-book reader? Well, if the kids were drooling at the NOOKcolor, now they can start hounding you for their own iPad. Barnes & Noble has released a new free NOOK Kids for iPad app that is specifically designed to play over 230 interactive picture books. More than 50 of the books have professional narrations, including the Thomas and Friends, Richard Scarry and Olivia series. Parents can decide what books are appropriate for kids of different ages by using the "Parent's Corner" to set limits. To sweeten the pot, Barnes & Noble is offering two free interactive books -- Richard Scarry's Colors and Kipling's The Elephant's Child -- when you sign up for the NOOK service and place a credit card number on Read More
Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader comes to Apple iPhone, iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 17 Aug 2010 17:32:08 UTC +00:00
All you bookworms are going to get some digital love, as the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader software is now ready to go for the Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad. This app enters an increasingly-crowded market for digital book buying. This is an update to a previous app and it has been re-branded under the “Nook” label. This is not a surprise at all because Barnes & Noble knows that its future will mainly be in digital distribution. If you ever go into one of its retail stores, you’re immediately assaulted with people trying to push the Nook e-reader on you. The 2.2 version of the Nook app adds full Apple iPad support and you can see from the screen shot above that this includes a better use of the real estate. You’ll also be able to tailor the way the content looks and this includes adjustable font sizes, colors and Read More
Get the New York Times on iPad via BN... sort of
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Jul 2010 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
Update: Barnes & Noble's PR team pinged us to point out two salient points. #1, the message above does in fact note that only the iPod touch and iPhone versions of the newspaper/magazine subscriptions are temporarily offline -- the iPad subs are still available, as I found. #2, via the "Go To" button at the top of the eReader app screen, you can access an abbreviated table of contents (a list of the paper's sections); that's a help, but still not a particularly well-adapted navigational approach for all the stories in the NYT. My apologies for the errors. We got the heads-up from reader Jehuda S. that Barnes & Noble is now listing the New York Times as available for subscription or single-copy download into the company's B&N eReader app. A quick check of B&N's site does indeed show the paper available for $0.99 a day, or $19.99 for a monthly Read More

Showdown: 5 iPad Reading Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Jun 2010 19:00:21 UTC +00:00
Now that all the commercial e-book distributors have made their iPad apps available, it’s time for an overview of how each app performs, along with their pluses and minuses. One of my primary goals with the iPad was reducing the amount of paper clutter in my house. As a voracious reader, my home library was quickly approaching the need for a Dewey decimal system. While Andy Ihnatko is known for living a year of digital media last year, for a while now I’ve been trying to reach that goal myself. The good news is, the iPad makes it very easy to purchase and consume digital media. I’ve had no eye strain issues with the iPad, having read over 10 books on it since its launch. Neither have I found the weight of the device to be a big issue — however I usually keep it propped on something. Reading outdoors is Read More

Further legitimizing the iPad as a book reader, Barnes & Noble introduced its reader app [App Store, Free] for the iPad today. While not as flashy as Apple’s iBooks, the BN eReader appears to be a step ahead of the Kindle app and offers features not available on either competing apps. The Barnes & Noble app offers the ability to loan out your eBooks to a friend for up to two weeks, and lets you see the books as they were intended, using the publishers formatting suggestion. It also allows you to save formatting themes. The expected features are included as well, such as highlighting, adding notes, and bookmarks (tap the bottom right corner to dog-ear the page). BN eReader also supports syncing between other devices such as the Nook or BN eReader for iPhone. The new eReader has a few downsides, however. When you launch the app, it requires you Read More
Barnes & Noble releases eReader app for iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 27 May 2010 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
Barnes & Noble released its eReader for iPad (free) this week. This latest incarnation adds some features that the iPhone version lacks, like text highlighting and room for annotations (something I wish Apple's iBooks app did). But more than that, eReader for iPad is about sharing. A unique feature called "LendMe" lets customers "lend" books to anyone with the app across platforms (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac) or a Nook. You can grab their address from within the app itself. The app comes with ten free samples of current best sellers, three free classics and a dictionary. Much was made of the iPad's potential as an eReader before its release, as comparisons to the Kindle and Nook were inevitable. Now that some months have passed, users have had time to explore the idea and compare applications for their look, feel and usability. What's your experience been? [Via Electronista] Read More

Awesome
v3rn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just needs a little work with the UI and adding an in-app way to purchase books. iBooks is still my preferred ebook reader, but this is great competition. And it has way more books and much cheaper. A page turn animation would be nice as well.
Great
B reader 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the best app ever - I wish there were more stars! It was so easy to set up. All the books I've purchased from Barnes & Noble appeared right away and it's really easy to look through them. I like the way you can make the text any color you want, plus there are so many choices of fonts & sizes. I'm looking forward to always having my books along, whether I have my iPad or just my iPhone.
Good, but haye to have to switch to the net to do anything.
Reader need work 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good start, but not complete. You should't have to bounce in and out of Safari.
Best eReader Yet
Boston Fan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautiful, clean interface. Purchase from BN or apple store. Get five books free. Love the dictionary with google and wikipedia look up.
Great App!
kchoppr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very nice!
Simply Beautiful
Marie1963 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
THE GREAT: * beautiful design: no annoying animations or cheesy grapichs -- they just kept things really elegant and understated * incredibly easy to use * great selection of e-books * the most personalization choices by a mile THE GOOD: * the predesigned themes are useful. I love "nightlight" but would like a few more designs. I'll make my own! NEEDS WORK: * Their iPhone app should work like this. They say it is "forthcoming" in the text, but it should be ready now * A way to control screen brightness would be nice. I can make the page gray, which helps a lot for now * Nice website, but come on BN! Let me shop inside the app. I hate closing the app to get books. I love e-reading. Yet another great thing I can do with my iPad. This is my favorite e-book app: "Simply beautiful"
Great App!
NJE974 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
By far the best eBook reader on the iPad and from my favorite bookstore - B&N!
no way to dim display.
smithcalvind 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Display too bright. Can't dim display without leaving app.
Thank you
WLSJR 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thank you for bringing my favorite bookstore to my iPad. It's the best eReader for the iPad. It was worth the short wait.
How do you remove a book?
Joe in Los Angeles 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I want to remove a sample and it's certainly not obvious. This has potential, but if I can't control my library, not good.
Needs work
theWarden81 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Smallest font size way too big. Requires turning pages too much. No way to dim within app. Switching to landscape is awkward. Books take a while to load. Cumbersome controls. Too bad, as a Nook owner I really was looking forward to this, but B&N blew it.
Worthless for me
egwest 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Does not allow sideloading of Fictionwise/eReader ebooks. I have over two hundred ebooks between the two sites and would have liked to read them on the iPad with a reader that supports the iPad screen. I also would have been more then happy to make purchases at barnes and noble if only they had been nice and allowed the reader to import ebooks from fictionwise and ereader. After all, they bloody own both ebook stores, so you think they would support access in their reader. This kind of makes me think they are planning to close the two ebook stores in the near future.
2-page horizontal
Toosad 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Didn't realize how much I would miss the lack of a 2-page horizontal spread until I tried reading on this app (or the many others that lack it). That is a deal breaker despite the wonderful note taking and highlighting.
Try Again
JohnBOhio 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not bad, my biggest beef is that the smallest font is too large. My eyes are good, I can go smaller. I'll stick to the Kindle (since it cross platform syncs to my Mac, PC, iPhone, and iPad.) I like Apple's iBooks, but it has no iPhone support yet. In the end, I will buy a book from either Kindle or Apple, which ever is cheaper.) I do like that both the B&N and iBooks show two pages in landscape. Kindle keeps it to one page either way, a big bummer for me.
Removing samples is stupidly hard
Lynienu 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish they would let you move the books to the iPad iBooks reader. The sample books that I did not ask for are difficult at best to remove. Once my gift certificates are spent, I will likely delete this app.
require a credit card
Comic Con Boo Boo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
you dont need a credit card for free books so why do you require that info? it seems they want to harvest personal info.
Awesome, one question
DigestionDr.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app. Question: I know how to add a bookmark, but is there a way to create notes/highlights or is that only for notes/highlights inherent to the book?
It can't replace my nook, but when I can't have both with me...
Bink1162 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love my nook and I love my iPad, now it's like they are best friends. The books load fast, the page turn is instant, it's simply wonderful. What more could you ask for?
So far so good; need an even smaller font size option.
cpoo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
So far it's really good. Glad to have the option of reading on my nook and now on here too - no need to carry both all the time. However, I would like to see a smaller font option though. Right now the smallest still seems big and child-book-like. A smaller one would allow even more text to fit on the page as well. Great start!
Cant load ereader books, why bother calling it ereader?
william_k 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Useless. And the message from tech support was "we have no announced plans to support the ipad for ereader". forget it, switching to Kindle.
Why can't I delete samples from the Library
Xendula 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I take my previous review back. Selecting "remove from iPad" leads to nomresults with some of the samples.
Not ready for prime time...
winbird 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sorry, but this in no way compares favorably to either of the two big contenders on the iPad. It does not render a page as a book page since it just, basically throws text to the screen. In my opinion, the developers coded for another computer screen and not for the iPad. It just doesn't feel right...
not a great start
PRAARP 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Some books downloaded using the iPhone won't open because of geographical restrictions. Others won't open because they are the wrong format?
Can't remove samples
Lowfuel 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
"remove from iPad" doesn't work for the pre-populated list. Annoying! Please give me a way to get Laura Bush's mugshot off my wall of books. 1 star until that is addressed.
Are you kidding?
Innovator4life 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This doesn't hold a candle to the Kindle or iBooks app. It seriously looks like it was designed by a 3rd grader. This is an unacceptable addition to eReaders on the iPad. I was looking forward to this app but severely let down. I ordered a newspaper and the contents read: "Main, A&E, Sports". It's 300 pages and these are the only categories to choose from, not to mention the layout which is dreadful. The app crashes every time I try and change a setting. Reading on it is like reading text on a Mac in 1986. I mean seriously, I cannot believe this is what they released for the iPad. I sincerely hope they hire a professional team that can deliver a compelling app, but I'm not holding my breath. If you think this is quality, then you are truly missing the point of the iPad.
Keep it up
Kevin Weiler 5.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
Thanks for updating selection, the reading experience gets better and better. Great job integrating retina...keep it up!
Update for retina display
Tatania 5.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
Thank you so much for the new update for the retina display! The fonts are so much clearer and so much easier to read. I just love the one touch word lookup feature. Now if only we could shop for books from the app that would make it a home run.
Needs update for new iPad!!!
Gabriel NJ 4.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
Thank you for the update. Letters look clear n crisp. I'm taking a star off, because I believe there is still room for improvement here. Perhaps have the pages turn in a similar way to iBooks. Otherwise since B&N books are at times less expensive, I'll will be returning to buy more books.
Continuous Improvement
JohnnyDee62 4.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
The retina update is wonderful, thanks! Some books always display regular text as black, even in Night Mode (and even with other color options, such as green-on-black), although italics text does appear in the selected color.Still remaining from before:Mentioned by others: Dictionary has no definition for 9 out of 10 words I look up and definitions are terse. Perhaps link to Dictionary.com (or other) app(s) if installed?Rest of the app is nice, thanks, although I would prefer continuously scrolling text. [Can we PLEASE lose the antiquated paper page metaphor in electronic media?? If we want that, paper books are still around. And no, hokey page-turning animations do not help -- this is a computer, not a book! Although, once again: *options* are nice for everyone.]
Crashing
Sir.Loverofthis 1.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
Crashing within in seconds of opening and when does stay open won't search.
Best eReading app for iPhone
BobbyT222 5.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
I've tried all of the apps and I think is the best; it's the only one that allows me to get both books and magazines. The enhanced features like night mode, highlighting, bookmarking are great. I'd love if B&N added some features to tie the app to special offers in the store.
Cannot open

Ap crashes every time. Cannot load :/
Good update for new iPad but....
RavenJM 4.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
Happy about the update for the new iPad, text is looking clear again! But the website is still WAY too Busy and SLOW! And what happened to the free book section?? I found a great first-in-a-series, which lead me to buy the other books, why is it gone??
Easy to read
Ushouldlistentome123 5.0 stars Version: 3.1.3
It is a great app for reading but is there a way that when u purchase a paperback on the receipt were u could type in a code one per account or whatever so u could have it if u don't want to bring your device with u and when u have your device at home for easy reads
Sweet!
