A friend on Twitter asked me the other day if I had a list of the educational apps I have on my iPad. With all the reviews I have done, I was ashamed to admit that I've never taken the time to list those apps that I use on a regular basis with my children. I reached out to the other writers at TUAW and asked them the same question. Together, we compiled a list of our favorite learning apps for children, and wow, what a list. The apps are presented below in no particular order. SparkleFish ($0.99, 99-cent in-app purchases) Paper by FiftyThree (Free, in-app purchases of $2.99 for tools and $7.99 for everything) Minecraft-Pocket Edition ($6.99; more game-ish, but building with blocks is learning, no?) Articulation Station (Free; sound packs are $2.99 to $5.99, full app is $49) Motion Math Hungry Fish (Free, in-app purchases from $2.99 up to Read More

Daily iPhone App: WordsWorth
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Jan 2012 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you like word games like Scrabble or SpellTower, then you'll want to take a look at WordsWorth. According to the developer, WordsWorth landed in the App Store in 2009 and was one of the first word games available for the iPhone. It's very similar to PopCap's Bookworm game, but WordsWorth has a variety of features which makes it that much more enjoyable to play. The game presents you with a grid of letters that you use to spell words. You get points for spelling words using adjacent letters, and you get more points for longer words. In single-player mode, you have control over word size, grid size and shuffle count. You can also select from the Classic game, a timed mode, and tumble mode which starts off with a few letters and gradually drops them into empty spots. Tumble mode is especially challenging as you have to spell words faster Read More
On the heels of a cool new content update to for iPhone and iPod Touch, creator PopCap Games has slashed the prices of the vast majority of its App Store catalogue. From now until whenever the studio decides to call it quits, you can grab its best games on the cheap, including the aforementioned Plants vs. Zombies as well as Peggle. Here’s a Quick Hits list for your pleasure: It’s hard to believe that everyone doesn’t own Plants vs. Zombies or Peggle already, so I thought I’d plug Chuzzle real fast. It’s another neat match-three game in a long line of match-three titles that don’t quite do enough to distance themselves from Bejeweled, but it’s hip in bursts and has a ton of character to spare. At this price, it’s worth a shot if you’re into puzzle games. If you are interested a new version 2.0 of the app has been Read More

Sep 30th 2010 at 3:30PM Seriously, I'm at lunch at work where WiFi is severely locked down and can't buy *any* of these from my iPhone over the 3G network... If AT&T is going to remove "unlimited" 3G and put data caps in place, the *least* they could do would be to allow me to buy apps with larger footprints over my 3G connection. (Since that's the *reason* I have a 3G smartphone to begin with: so my access won't be limited by asinine network restrictions...) LOVE Osmos - thanks for the tip, TUAW! Unfortunately, some of the sales are not global at this time.Super Monkey Ball 2 and Mirror's Edge are showing up in various app store monitors as being on sale, but the UK store is still showing full price. Sweet, real racing is now 2.99. Osmos is still $4.99 for iPad. I just noticed the iPhone version is Read More

So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 08:20:31 UTC +00:00
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we Read More

The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 00:40:00 UTC +00:00
Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. iPhone Games: The Most Anticipated Games of 2010
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Dec 2009 11:37:43 UTC +00:00
There's no doubt that 2009 has been an amazing year for iPhone gaming, but in looking ahead to 2010, compiling a list of the things we're looking forward to the most proved to be just as challenging as listing the games we most enjoyed in the past. To wrap up our series of year-end "best of" articles, let's take a peek at things we're excited to see released or hear more about in 2010. Without a doubt, the current elephant in the room of indie iPhone gaming would have to be the recent news of Unreal Engine 3 running on the iPhone 3GS and 3rd generation iPod touch. Details are still hazy at best as to how licensing this engine is going to work, as well as how much (or how little) effort it will take to port existing projects which utilize the Unreal Engine 3 to the iPhone. There are Read More

PopCap wants to help you usher in an entirely new decade by having a sale on three of their popular games, so if your new year’s resolution was going to be to play more casual games on your iPhone or iPod touch, you are certainly in luck. Peggle ($4.99 -> $1.99): One of the most addicting casual games to ever hit the App Store.  Peggle consists of shooting a ball from a launcher at the top of the screen in an attempt to hit as many pegs as possible on the way down. You are only given a certain number of balls to clear the board of all of the orange pegs, and if you fail to do so, the game is over. Peggle features 55 levels, 40 master challenges, an iPhone-optimized control mechanism, and pass and play multiplayer. Check out our in-depth review to learn more. Chuzzle ($4.99 -> $1.99): Read More
App Review: Bookworm for iPhone

By Chris Vitek, Sunday, Aug 23, 2009 | ) I have said it before, I will take it again, I am not a huge fan or word games. But occasionally one will come along that captures my attention. Bookworm [$2.99 - iTunes link] is just such a game. The premise is simple – you are presented with a field of letter tiles. You need to go through spelling words with connecting tiles. As words are spelled, those tiles vanish, and new tiles fall from the top to replace them. Throw in features like bonus works, green tiles (for more points), red tiles (that “burn” through the others to the bottom) and you have the game Bookworm. You progress through each level, getting points for spelling longer and more difficult words. As you go, you can collected various accomplishments (words types, such as body parts). There are two modes of play – Read More
iPhone Games On Sale, Get Them While The Getting Is Good

It’s about that time again, time for another massive list of great games that are on sale in the App Store.  Some of the games listed below are actually on sale for the very first time, so there may just be something for everyone. Puzzle Quest Chapter 1 and 2: This is one of my personal favorites.  Puzzle Quest features the usual match-three style gameplay, but throws in an RPG element that will having you constantly coming back for more.  The game has been available at the price of $7.99 for the longest time, but it is now on sale for only $4.99. Guinness World Records: Contains a wide variety of mini-games, online leader boards, single-device multiplayer, and the ability to customize your characters.  They are also holding a contest for the best player.  If it’s you, your name will be in the 2010 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.  Normally priced Read More

Bookworm
Calendar16 Sun, 02 Aug 2009 05:43:12 UTC +00:00
Bookworm is yet another game from PopCap, the creators of Bejeweled and Peggle. Instead of eliminating jewels or pegs like the other two games, Bookworm is all about finding words in the different columns that are on the screen. Similar to Boggle or other word-search games, the app puts a twist on the classic game style by adding different powerups and dangers to watch out for. The classic game is not like other games in that it isn\'t timed. Instead, words must be made using the burning letters before they burn through to the bottom of the screen. It\'s all about competing for the highest score. Although this game is still well made and the sounds and graphics work great, this game is definitely not my most favorite of the PopCap games. There isn\'t as much satisfaction trying to find words and submitting them compared to the amazing feeling of eliminating Read More

Amazing! Great gameplay! Loads of fun!
James M. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is my favorite game on the computer and it is even more fun on the iPhone! Gameplay is great and flawless. Saves your current level, and everything is very fluid. Love the cool features like the in game definitions of certain words, adds educational value. Would highly recommend this game!!
Premium Word Game!
Coldar 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If your going to buy just one word game then get this. This will not disappoint anyone and worth the $5 purchasing price. This is difinetly one of the best word games to get. This high quality game simply shines through the pile of other word games from the excellent word play and features to the polished look and graphics. Very nicely done and highly recommed this to every one that's looking for a word game the is challenging and its themed so its very fun to play. Get it before it goes up to $100. (my expectations are high).
finally, quality
krazyfingerzz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love other games in this genre (relatively speaking - word games), like Scrabble, Lexitron and Scramboni, but nothing specifically like Bookworm (word search, if you will) has stayed long on the iPhone because, well, they don't measure up to the original, which is Popcap's Bookworm. Games that tried, came close-ish, but ultimately failed were Wurdle and Wordsworth (lite). I suppose I was spoiled by Lex and the music, but it goes beyond the aesthetics and into nuances of gameplay. You don't select grid size, and this grid is perfect. As you level up, your rank changes, as announced by Lex each time. It has always been a favorite challenge of mine to make it to the "end" though I don't remember when I last did or even tried, but having started at 3am, I'm fairly confident I'm on a mission now. I had hoped this might incorporate elements of Bookworm Adventure, which I can only play on my PC, and which differs from the original Deluxe, which I play on my Macs. (both are available to try free at Popcap). This seems to have elements new to the iPhone, but not those of Adventure, which is fine. As you make certain words, you see new "books" previously titled with question marks get titles. These words are part of hidden categories. So far I think I've gotten Pets and Body Parts and look forward to seeing if I can guess what the others will be. You still get special tiles for larger words, plus bonus words, and all your words and accomplishments are recorded in various books (12 letters etc.). The two modes still exist, with classic being leisurely and timed evilly nerve-wracking with those infamous burning tiles :0) I love that challenge, unique to Bookworm, though either from lack of recent practice or changes to this version, those burning tiles seem to pop up much more quickly than they used to. Since you can have a saved game going in each mode, I've been trading off until I think I am up to the challenge. This plays smoothly, perfectly, and unless something has changed, the dictionary is wonderful (so you don't painstakingly plan for a word only to find you can't play it). I had my students (college) addicted to this and Peggle (what a bad influence I am and what a mistake that was) which says a lot about the game. Try out the mac/of demos. This is what I've been waiting for...now hurry up with ALCHEMY and PEGGLE (we won't be doing much work in class but we will have fun!) BTW, great pricing, better than the trial and error with Bejeweled though I'd pay whatever the cost for Peggle and probably Alchemy. Accept no substitutes and buy this!
Pretty Good, With a Minor Problem
Winter8 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bookworm is a very polished application. Gameplay is perfect for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Buttons are big and easy to click, as well as the letter tiles. Background music is OK as well.
Great Game... needs a bit further development...
jiblic 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The vocabulary list seems to be lacking a good amount of words - it doesn't seem to have enough recognized words as the online version or the purchased game from PopCaps. Nevertheless... still fun...
Another great word game
englishteacher1120 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The polish and production on this game are top notch. The way the game tracks your words by building up your library makes for endless replayability. This game is so engaging that I went and bought Bookworm Adventures for my PC, and that game, with it's RPG and story elements, is downright addicting as well. PopCap, please bring Bookworm Adventures to the App store too!
Amazing!
Lexlover 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bookworm for iPhone is even better than Bookworm for PC and Mac, and it completely blows away the other iPhone word games. Price is right too. Get this one for sure. Seriously, you'll love it!
Finally! Much anticipated.

And this version delivers. I've been waiting for this game to arrive to the iPhone as I throughly enjoyed the home computer version and even the Game boy model. Trust me or don't, but this is the single game- front page worthy- to purchase.
Amazing

I've loved bookworm for years and am thrilled to have it on my iPhone! My only complaint is that the "shake to scramble" does not always register; I see that others are having the same problem. Fix that (or add a scramble button) and you have a five star app!
A great game for the value!

Bookworm has been my favorite computer game for years. I have been saying for a long time that bookworm should be available on the iPhone. When my told me there was an app. I just HAD to buy it! I must say that it is just as fun as the original! I love the addition if the collection of books. It's so cool and creative! Thanks for making my dream come true! Haha I love this game! :)
Wow

This game is AMAZING!!! Its so much fun and it's also very challenging, I'm so addicted. It crashes occasionally but still saves your game. Update? I LOVE it.
A perfect port of the original
Atypicprig 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The addition of the collection books is a nice touch. I'll be playing this one for quite a while; it's the perfect time-killer.
Not Bad, Not Great
kcjazzlark 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is essentially the same game as Fire Words, which has been available in the App Store for the last 9 months (and costs $3 less). I thoroughly enjoy Bookworm on the computer and was anxious to try this iPhone version. Frankly, on this platform, Fire Words is the better game. Its larger letters are easier are easier to navigate and its lifting your finger to register a letter (as opposed to Bookworm requiring an additional tap) makes for faster and more intuitive game play. Also, the timed version of Bookworm, where letter tiles catch fire and you need to use them quickly, seems more hurried than either the computer version of this game or Fire Words.
Needs improvement.
wfhound 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I loved this game on my Palm. The iPhone version needs some help. First of all, the music is annoying and jejune. I turned the music way, way down on mine. Second, loads of very common words are missing from the dictionary, e.g., "went." C'mon, guys. Third, the game is not all that challenging. I reached the top rank the very first time I tried. Fourth, the score covers the burning tile so you can't tell what it is. Sheesh. Fifth, the value of each letter is not displayed. This was an option in the Palm version. I might have to try 3 or 4 words with one letter variation to find out which is the highest scoring. Cripes. Please, PopCap, at least improve the dictionary.
Great game but....
momto4247 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this game on my PC, and was thrilled to see it in the app store but there are a few glitches. The tiles don't always scramble when you shake it and it also doesn't recognize several valid words like "was". Please add a manual button to touch to scramble tiles it would work better, be more reliable and less distracting than shaking. Nothing major that an update wouldn't fix. Then it would be worth 5 . The category bonus books are fun! Overall great game when glitches are fixed.
Great app - still Bookworm - what's the deal with the dictionary?
Deadly Dan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's still the same bookworm you know and love. Dove in, still knew it, still loved it. Completely stable.
It's Finally Back!
kb613 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Back in my PDA days I was quite addicted to Bookworm so I'm thrilled to see it again. The newly-added books feature is fun.
Great, but there's one flaw.
Breezygirl20001 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this game! However, if you're trying to spell all of the words in the Bonus Book List, the game doesn't recognize when the word "gold" is spelled. I've spelled it ten times and it does not get recognized in the Minerals book.
Great app!
angelweengz 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Couple of bugs to work out though. -Won't always scramble when you shake the iPhone. -Game Music doesn't come back on after you lock the screen. Fix these things then I'll give it 5 stars!!
A great conversion for the iPhone
A Thoughtful Review 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've played Bookworm on the desktop before, and found it addicting, but difficult to pick up for a few minutes here and there. The iPhone edition is a faithful conversion of the game for the handheld world, and keeps the game play fun.
Boom boom FIREPOWER!
Chrisluther 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Crapped my pants when I saw this game on iTunes! Loved this game on the computer, but now I can take it anywhere!!
Perfect 5 stars

Great game, loved it on the computer. Couple of issues: "Gold" is in two bonus books, but you only get credit for one if the second book isnt discovered. Getting the word again does nothing. Very common words like "was" and "been" not recognized.
Very addictive

Major time killer, I played until my battery warning came on. Recharged it and played some more. Thanks PopCap! Now how about adding Alchemy?
Excellent game, very unfortunate bug.

This is a fun game, but no matter how much I shake my phone, the tiles won't scramble. I tested another app that uses shaking (to see if it was just my phone), but that one worked. This game could be really fantastic if only I didn't get "game over" when the only option left is to scramble. I hope they come out with an update soon.
Lots of fun, a couple of annoyances

I very much enjoy this game and prefer this app to earlier online versions: gameplay is very smooth and intuitive. However, like an earlier reviewer, I found that the shake-to-scramble feature does not work consistently - eventually, as the score gets higher, it seems to stop working altogether. This can result in a premature and frustrating end to the game. As many others have observed, the dictionary feels rather arbitrary and has some surprising gaps. This app delivers good value, but if these issues were fixed, it could be outstanding.
Frustrated

Word scramble doesn't work.
Worms and Snakes...

Bookworm is a classic. If you can handle a few minor glitches and a suspect dictionary, go for it. If you're a word junkie like me, try WoodSnake and Woffo, too. Can't get enough...
Awesome Addicting Game

I need to write a review for this game because I am very pleased with it and just have to say how much fun it is. It gets really stressfull when you got one of those fire tiles at the bottom haha but i love the challenge it offers. I also see a lot of complaints about the scrambling that is activated when shaken, I did have trouble as well but you must shake it in a certain manner and eventually you will activate the scramble, it does work. Great word game!
Definition updates - Thanks!

I love this app over others for two reasons; 1. It has more words than the others, 2. It gives definitions of word so I actually learn something.But... Please add a full dictionary! A word game isn't a word game without a full dictionary.
What A Game

I'd been waiting for this app on the iPhone/Touch since purchasing the unit and my wish came true. I have this game on my laptop and desktop as well. Hours of fun making words as big as you can, making bonus words scores huge as well. This is a must for people who love word games like Scrabble, word finds, etc. A+!
My Number One Game

I have a couple dozen games on my iPhone and this is the one I play the most. And it actually improves on the Mac version. I'd highly recommend it.
The best!

I love that game and i spent weeks playing it everynight before i sleep, and what i liked the most was the books that contains words which you have to find. I actually found all the words in all the books but only one word me angry cuz everytime i find it nothing happens (it was the word GOLD).. i tried to find it on my daughters ipod and also nothing happens and it didn't count it as found. this was very frustrating that I stopped playing the game. other than that its a good game.
