Booyah starts off slow, offers $1000 in contest

I've been playing with the hyped-up Booyah Society app for about a week or so now, and I don't think my reaction is too singular: it's not all that great. The idea is certainly a good one: take your real-life achievements and turn them into a game, complete with points and an avatar, but in practice, it's not quite there yet. Achievements are honor-based, which means you can make as many or as few points as you want just by punching anything in, and while the avatar is pretty nifty, it doesn't seem like there's that much to do with the little guy besides spin him around until he gets sick. That's not to say that the potential isn't still there -- the app's "Booyah" recommendations can give you some interesting things to do if you need them, and if they ever get the app using some actual iPhone mechanics (how Read More
BooYah! (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Read More

Today's iPhone app reviews include Medscape, Jeopardy, Chess Wars, and Booyah Society. Medscape is an incredible free medical resource for healthcare professionals and inquisitive patients. Jeopardy is, well, Jeopardy. Chess Wars is by far the best chess game in the iPhone, allowing you to play with your Facebook friends. Booyah Society allows competitive people (you know, the type who yell "Booyah" after every minor success) to earn points for every daily activity. Medscape by WebMD Category: Medical Price: Free Medscape is a new iPhone app made by the famous online medical resource WebMD. The app provides comprehensive drug information, clinical reference tools, medical news, and continued medical education. This application targets physicians, pharmacists, medical/pharmacy students, smart patients, and medical enthusiasts. The best feature of the app (for the non-healthcare-professional) is the extensive directory of physicians, hospitals, and pharmacies. There are tons more features, just check it out in iTunes.
A couple of months ago we were notified that Booyah, a start-up company founded by three former Blizzard Entertainment veterans, was given $4.5 million in Series A financing from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) iFund.  This $100 million iFund was set up in March 2008 by KPCB to be invested in companies with “market-changing ideas” for the iPhone and iPod touch.  The thing is, no one really knew what market-changing idea Booyah had come up with to deserve the $4.5 million in funding, because even the initial press release was intentionally vague.  Well, today everyone was let in on this little secret. Booyah Society is a brand new iPhone and iPod touch app that basically allows you to obtain achievements for real-life activities. “Booyah Society will be intuitive to the generation surrounded by social networking and social games,” said Keith Lee, CEO, Booyah. “Booyah’s goal is to motivate people to Read More
Booyah is a company I've had my eye on for a while -- they're a couple of veterans from Blizzard Entertainment (makers of the popular and games, two of my favorites) who have been teasing a big-time iPhone app. Just today, they've finally showed their cards, and have released , a 3D, interactive, social network-connected "achievement system for life." If that sounds like an idea that's pretty floaty, you probably heard it right. Basically it's a game system that more or less overlays on what you're already posting to Facebook and Twitter. If you do anything from conquering a new videogame to doing a new exercise to visiting a new restaurant, you can earn achievements and points for an ingame avatar and scoreboard. In essence, they're aiming to take the things we already tell each other we're doing, and put this game/scoring system on top of that. There are plans to Read More

I love getting achievements! This app is great bc now I can get credit for things I already do. Neat that I can get achievements for posting and getting comments from my friends on Facebook. Everyone can see my achievements too. The app looks really good. I wonder how my avatar guy will change.
Makes living life that much more fun
Blouberry 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Booyah Society is a fantastic app in that it feels like you're playing a game when you're really not. There's no game that's more worth winning than life, and that's the message that this app gets across really well. Overall, the app is very polished, and the developers clearly thought out every small detail. It's an app with tons of replay value; you'll be coming back again and again.
Great New Take On Social Networking!
UnixMaster 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I haven't gotten many achievements yet, but I think this is a really fun way to share with my friends and family! And the Avatar is really cool!

Really neat app. It lets you categorize your Facebook and Twitter posts, and you get achievements for making different types of posts. It inspired me to change what I write about.

Love this new app. There are many games on the app store which I used 1-10 times and throw out, but this seems like the first one that I could see using multiple times a week forever. Its not just a game, it has real utility by helping me track, monitor and share things I do in life. very cool.
makes it more fun to post to Facebook and Twitter
Dalai 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Yesterday - 6 posts to Twitter (they also go to my Facebook) and nothing to show for it. Today - 6 posts to Booyah - still goes to my Twitter and Facebook - but I've unlocked 6 achievements and upgrades in their cool app.
Awesome!

Great for active people, a must for travellers.
felixkitty 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Road trip through Oregon. I'm in the passenger seat playing with my iPhone. I open Booyah and spin my avatar just to hear him say "yippie!" and "whoa whoa whoa whoa." * Up pops info on a winery near by. Also live music in the next town. Wow! Links directly to the website to get more information. And I thought I was in the middle of nowhere.

Awesome fun. Love the artwork. Great can link to Twitter and facebook!
A game you win by leading an interesting life?
staringispolite 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sounds like a great step forward to me! Would like to see them expand achievements beyond merely posting or getting likes, tho I suspect that's coming after the 'intro phase'. (Ie. Setting my own goals? Going through checklists setup by experts?) Overall though, love the incentive to try new things and share with friends. Keep it comin, Booyah!
Boooooyaah

It is what it is. Booooyahhh boi
Cute toy but...
ToyDragon 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
... It's a crude first effort. The robot avatar is generic and has nothing to do with personalization. The achievments are too generalized. Relying on facebook for friends list instantly turns off a large number of potential users. The idea is grand but someone else will shortly make a far more serious version of the concept.
Meh
Steelergrizz 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Needs alot of work - cool idea, dull implementation so far. Hopefully updates will make it more interesting
Wow, HUGE disappointment!
Globetro 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was really looking forward to this app. I've always wanted to implement something similar to this... a way of earning achievements for life. I was super excited when I saw that a bunch of ex-Blizzard guys, funded by a large VC firm like KP, would produce something amazing. Boy was I wrong.
Great implemenation
bscar 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've always wondered if someone would come out with something like this. I could see the current achievements getting kind of old but hopefully we'll see more in future updates. Awesome!
Pointless advertising scheme
aubaub 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I played with it about 2 minutes, just long enough to realize it's just a flashy way to drive traffic to specific websties.
Great concept, but...
Kepesk 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Having an achievement system for real life is a crazy awesome idea. However, it seems like 2/3 of the achievements require other people to comment on your posts or at least care. Nobody is going to write three comments about how I did the dishes or ran a mile.
Lame!
Achtungemily 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
How do you use this stupid thing?
Fake user reviews + so-so app = 1 star
AppZero 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
And the big "BOOYAH!" goes to... the developers' friends & family! How many Achievements were they awarded for "Fake Review Writing"? I *might* have given this app another star or two, otherwise. The idea seems original but it's a fruitless experience due to the lame character design, the weird over-reliance on Facebook/Twitter (presumably in hopes of creating user-generated viral marketing), etc. Nice business plan, Devs. Mediocre app.
