First Impressions of 'Undead Island' from Team Phobic
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Mar 2011 22:26:09 UTC +00:00
Early last week we posted the first video of Team Phobic’s newest iOS game Undead Island [$1.99], and as of today it is now available for download in the App Store. Team Phobic has honed their platforming craft with Bounce On [$1.99/Lite] and its sequel Bounce On 2: Drallo’s Demise [$3.99/Lite], and now they’ve taken this expertise to create an action/platforming hybrid with Undead Island. The game features 16 levels to play through, all of which are quite lengthy and are loaded with secret areas and alternate paths. The main protagonist, a female ninja, comes equipped with a katana melee attack, a powerful sword blast charge attack, shurikens to toss at foes, and the ability to double jump. In essence, Undead Island feels very much like the classic action-platformers from the arcade and 16-bit eras. The level designs are very good, with a ton of areas to explore and secret bonuses Read More
Best iPod Touch and iPhone Games: 2010 Buyer's Guide
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 17:43:09 UTC +00:00
The App Store has continued to grow in leaps and bounds in 2010. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 300,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2010 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2010. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is an excellent starting place to catch you up. Note that many of the games also have iPad versions which are also linked. Cut the Rope, $0.99 - [Lite / iPad] - [Review] - [Forum Thread] - Proving that a cute main character, clever level designs, and simple touch screen controls are a Read More
By this point in time, after two and a half years of the App Store, I find it hard to get excited about a new Papi Jump/Doodle Jump/Mega Jump/(insert word here)Jump game. There's been some great ones to be sure, but it's also one of the most overdone genres in the entire App Store. But given the pedigree of developer Team Phobic, who have given us popular titles like GravBot [$1.99/Lite/HD] and Bounce On 2 [$3.99/Lite], I was definitely curious to see their take on this particular game type. Pleasantly, Bounce On Up [Free] is actually one of the best examples of an endless high jumping game, with some strategic twists on the formula and the lovable Bounce character from the Bounce On series. Bounce On Up starts out familiar enough, with a Santa hat adorned Bounce tasked with jumping skywards up a series of multicolored platforms. Tapping the screen makes Read More
The folks at Team Phobic have sent us a heads up that they have issued updates for nearly all of their games on the App Store. The first of these to hit was an update for the lite version of their early platformer Bounce On [$1.99/Lite]. As one of the first true platformer games available in the early days of the App Store, Bounce On remains a forum favorite in the genre. We reviewed the game back when it was released, but since that time it has been updated with improved graphics and plenty of new levels to play, making it one of the more complete packages available. The lite now includes additional levels from the full version. The sequel, Bounce On 2 [$3.99/Lite], has received the most significant update out of the bunch, and this update has just gone live today adding two additional levels and Universal iPad support. The Read More
For movies, they usually say the sequels don’t hold any candle to the original. In the iPhone world, that’s hardly the case as evidenced by this game. From Team Phobic comes the sequel to Bounce On, probably the most updated and content filled platformer  on the iPhone. But did they surpass what they did with Bounce On 1? Presentation Unlike the first, Bounce On 2 isn’t completely 2D, it’s more 2.5D. And just like with Rolando 2, the 2.5D graphics add a neat touch l although it’s not so 2.5D heavy. In fact, most elements are kept 2D, while some elements like bridges, enemies, etc. are now 3D. Also back are the awesome environments along with parallax scrolling, and lighting effects, which all together make it visually stunning. The details in the graphics are pretty sweet. For example, as you pass by a candle as the fireball, you light the candle. Also Read More
Way back in December 2008 we took a look at iPhone platformer [link], which, upon landing in the App Store, helped fill a rather sparsely populated genre. At the time of its release, iPhone platformers were few and Bounce On was solid and enjoyable (and has been consistently updated all the while). After nearly a year and a half, Team Phobic has just released Bounce On 2: Drallo's Demise [App Store], a sequel that brings a notable overhaul to the original formula and is as solid in today's store as the original was at its debut. Those familiar with the original game will quickly note certain enhancements in this sequel. Most apparent is the much improved graphical engine which allows for 3D sprites, special lighting effects, and even gravity changes. The backdrop graphics that make up the various levels are more complex and more detailed than those of the original, but do Read More
The sequel to Team Phobic’s hit ball-rolling platformer, Bounce On, is now available… sort of.   Team Phobic has released a lite version of Bounce On 2: Drallo’s Demise in order to give you a taste of what to expect on March 29th, the date the full version is set to hit the App Store. Bounce on 2 is a ball-rolling platformer just like the original but with enhanced everything, including a new graphical engine to provide 3D sprites and light effects, new physics, new levels, and new gameplay. The lite version contains three levels that allow you to get a handle on the new gameplay, which consists of traveling through levels to collect keys which open up different paths within the same levels.  The sequel also does away with lives, allowing you to restart unlimited times from the last checkpoint. The full version of Bounce On 2: Drallo’s Demise will Read More
