Today we ‘re continuing our series called ‘Desert Island Apps ‘. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. Brightkite Releases A Totally Refreshed iPhone App

Over the weekend, Brightkite released version 2.0 of their native iPhone app [App Store, Free] which allows users to update and interact with Brightkite on their iPhone and iPod touch. The new app brings with it quite a few new features including a new friending model, new privacy options, post-by-post update forwarding, and tons of UI enhancements. For those who don’t know, Brightkite is a location-based social networking platform which integrates with other services such as Twitter and Facebook. It’s a lot like Twitter, except that you can tag your posts with location info. A good example would be posting a photo at a concert. Brightkite is a free iPhone and iPod touch social networking app that allows you to meet people based on the places you go. You can browse profiles of people near you, see what your friends are up to, and post photos and notes to places you have been for others to see. We didn't want to let the week slip into the weekend without mention of the long-awaited release, on Thursday afternoon, of Google's Latitude client for iPhone, allowing users to update their locations to the social service and keep track of friends and family on the move (otherwise known as "iStalkU" -- no, sorry, that was Loopt, my mistake). The BrightKite iPhone app delivers a much needed seamless integration between the iPhone and the Brightkite social networking service. I no longer have to open safari, check into my location then go take a picture with my phone and email it to them, then go back to safari to see who is around me and my update. This app lets me do all those things in one intuitive and well designed interface. The smart location finding is also really cool, all I need to do is open the app and it picks up my location and lets me choose the nearest place to me to check in at. Well done and I look forward to future updates!!

I just downloaded the app after reading the description and positive reviews. Once the app starts it asks for login info or to ask for an invite. I thought maybe you had to register for an account at the site but I found out the service is currently under private beta. This should be explained in the description so those that have access get the app while those that don't aren't left in the dark. I hope I get an invite soon since this app/service looks promising.

This is hands down the best app and best service for location based social networking. The location features are great and place snapping works like a charm. This makes using Brightkite on the go a breeze! I love being able to upload photos directly from my phone and having all of Brightkite's other features at my fingertips. Great job guys! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. :)

(UPDATE: I just read the all the reveiws of this app. It stinks to high heaven of the developers writing their own reviews. It also stinks of Brightkite games that thoughtful reviews that offer legitimate feedback (this being beta only and lack of other users to interact with) are tagged as unhelpful. Come on Brightkite knock it off. It's shameful. FACT-POTENTIAL USERS BEWARE there hasn't been a user in my area logged on in the last three days and I live in an city with several million people.)

Nice, needs wider area for rural use

Pretty nice app. But need to get the word out quicker before current users get tired of the limited number users. Request: need a wider area than 4000 meters (That's only 2.4 miles) for people in rural areas. (or areas with few users). Maybe 20 miles or better. Also be able to specify an area other than your current location to search. I work in another state and would like to be able to search there while I am at home. Also a map view of where everyone is at to show where the hotspots are (like the mall or park). Download this app and hope "they will come".
