Weekend Fun: New Apps for Your iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Mar 2010 17:17:25 UTC +00:00
As one of ReadWriteWeb's iPhone users, I'm always looking for new applications to try out. Some get downloaded for a day and then deleted right away, others slowly inch their way closer to my homescreen. Even rarer are the ones that become actively used on a regular basis. Occasionally, we like to share our findings regarding our favorite new apps. (See, for example, last month's list here). Although I can't guarantee that all of the ones on the list below will become favorites forever, they piqued my interest enough to get a coveted spot on my iPhone this month. Let us know what you think about their potential for long-lasting success. I've been playing with Miso off and on for a week or so. Dubbed a "Foursquare-Like App for Homebodies" by yours truly, this app lets you "check-in" to the TV shows and movies you're watching and earn badges. While I Read More

There is no shortage of twitter applications on the iPhone. There is an app for practically any type of twitter user. Some offer a wealth of features while other attempt to create the smoothest experience possible. Brizzly is a twitter application for the iPhone and iPod Touch which actually started out as a different application. The original name was Birdfeed and it was known not for its features, but it's speed and simplicity. But since the recent acquisition, the app seems to have lost much of what made it unique. The new Brizzly app has added a tab bar at the bottom of the screen for quick links which will immediately disappoint original Birdfeed users. As a twitter app, all the standard features are present such as a section for @mentions, direct messages, and the user's home page. But aside from a few other features, there isn't anything that will make Read More
12 iPhone Apps for Surviving Conference Season
Calendar16 Thu, 11 Mar 2010 22:52:32 UTC +00:00
Amybeth Hale is a Talent Attraction Manager with AT&T’s Interactive Staffing team. She uses social technology to help drive awareness of job opportunities as well as interact with candidates. Connect with her on Twitter at @researchgoddess. As conference season is upon us (including SXSW, of course), I began thinking about all the things one might need to survive and stay connected with a busy schedule of travel and networking. Personally, I’m headed to San Diego to attend both SourceCon and the ERE Spring Expo. Then I remembered that I’m the proud owner of an iPhone, and that almost everything I’ll need to make it through is easily accessible and at the tip of my fingers. Here are some of the apps which I believe will help you navigate, stay connected, and meet new friends when you attend a conference. If you’re the ultimate procrastinator and you haven’t yet booked a hotel, Read More

Birdfeed has, in the past been a nice option for using Twitter on the iPhone, and now it seems to have gotten both better and a new name. To begin with, the Birdfeed app has been given an update which has brought it up to version 1.0. Except in this case you are not going to be presented with an update available notice in iTunes because the app is now a new app with a new name. Yup, Birdfeed has been changed to Brizzly. The good news here is that the app is now available for free, and for those that are not ready to move on, you can keep and remain using the current version of Birdfeed. As far as what Brizzly offers; Dear Birdfeed user, There’s an update to Birdfeed, but it’s got a different name: Brizzly for iPhone. Brizzly is the best way to view Twitter on the Read More

Since it launched last July at our Realtime Stream CrunchUp, Brizzly has been one of the best web-based Twitter apps. It offers support for viewing pictures inline, shortened link expansion, multiple Twitter accounts, and even some Facebook support. But they’ve been quiet in recent months. Now we know why. The Brizzly team went into hibernation because they made a couple of acquisitions, and have been working on a new feature. First, they bought one of my favorite Twitter iPhone apps, Birdfeed. One of the earliest apps to gain Twitter geolocation support, I had been worrying that Birdfeed would go extinct because developer Buzz Andersen recently joined Jack Dorsey’s mobile payment startup, Square. But since the acquisition (which actually occurred in the November/December timeframe), Andersen has been working closely with the Brizzly team to wrap the app in its new skin. And it’s more than just a new skin, as Brizzly for Read More

Thing Labs Acquires Birdfeed, Wikirank to Add to Brizzly
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Mar 2010 17:44:27 UTC +00:00
Thing Labs has acquired two “passion projects” from former Apple and Google developers to expand its social web aggregator, Brizzly. Birdfeed, a premium Twitter app for the iPhone made by Buzz Andersen (formerly of Apple, now at Square) will become the free Brizzly for iPhone app (existing Birdfeed customers, who paid up to $4.99 for it, can continue to use the app but Brizzly won’t provide support or updates for it). Brizzly for iPhone is live in the App Store today. Thing Labs CEO Jason Shellen said some of its coolest features are around geolocation and Twitter support. And Wikirank, a visualization for Wikipedia data from Small Batch (the makers of Typekit, formerly from Google and Adaptive Path), will serve an as-yet undecided purpose for exposing data in interesting ways. One of Brizzly’s goals is to help people explain the real-time social world around them — e.g. what do these Twitter Read More
