Ivanovich Games, who have previously brought the Operation Wolf-inspired gallery shooter [Free/HD] to the App Store, are at it once again with their homage to the classic arcade-style platforming game Bomb Jack, called Katana Jack. Just the news of a new Bomb Jack style game coming to the App Store is reason enough to get excited, but even more interesting to me is how Katana Jack has been developed. All of the artwork in the game was created using the excellent Brushes [$4.99/HD] app on an iPad, and the music was also composed on an iPad using GarageBand [$4.99]. David Hockney's art created by iPhone and iPad is currently on display at the Pierre Berge-Yves St. Laurent Foundation in Paris. When Hockney first got his iPhone a few years ago, he immediately recognized its capability to create art. Each day, Hockney paints flowers and sunsets with his device and sends those images to friends. Those paintings are now hanging in a show called "Fresh Flowers," displayed on 20 iPhones and 20 iPads. It's particularly interesting how Hockney has chosen the subjects for his art. Want to add some social mobile fun to this Halloween? How about taking some of the snapshots you’re taking with your iPhone or iPod touch, and turning them into cartoon avatars for Facebook and Twitter? The process is easy, and all you need are a few apps. Once you have your photo, perform all of the necessary cropping and color adjustments in one of the many image editors available.  For this step in the process I’ve always used Photogene (iTunes link, $1.99). Photoshop Express is a good free alternative.  In Photogene, I auto adjust the colors and utilize a filter to sharpen the image.  This  sharpening helps out when the photo is converted into a drawing. Apple seems to be on a roll of late with App Store app lists. First came The Best Games You’ve Never Played, a roundup of hidden gems that haven’t quite burned up the app charts. Now they’ve released the Awesome iOS 4 Apps list, a collection of apps and games that have been updated to take advantage of iOS 4′s new features, like support for the Retina Display and Multitasking/Fast App Switching. Here are some notable that have made the list: Now I haven’t tried all 42 apps on the list, but I don’t think I’d consider all of them to be awesome. We already spotlighted a few big apps that have made the jump to iOS 4 (and I'm sure we'll have more coming up soon), but Apple has gone ahead and put a few of its favorites on a page in iTunes for you to browse through as well. There are some excellent games on the list (PopCap didn't waste any time, and Ngmoco has a few, along with both Firemint titles). Art app Brushes and TUAW favorite Dropbox are there too, along with a bevy of other popular titles. Vorige week maandag bracht Apple het digitale schetsboek Adobe Ideas op de iPad uit. Vandaag is de applicatie er ook voor de iPhone. De applicatie is een schetsblok met vectorgebaseerde tekentools, kwasten in meerdere diktes, meerdere lagen en een zoomfunctie. Just because Adobe can't have Flash on the iPad doesn't mean that they want to miss out on the Apple tablet bandwagon. Adobe has released a pretty cool app called Adobe Ideas. Adobe Ideas is a sketchbook for the iPad. The app features vector-based drawing tools, zoom control, sizable brushes, layers, and the ability to email PDF documents for editing in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. While Adobe Ideas isn't as feature-rich as Brushes for iPad, it is a free app that starving artists will appreciate (though, if you've bought an iPad, I don't think you technically count as a "starving" artist). Brushes is probably the single most popular painting application for the iPhone and, not surprisingly, we’ve seen few artists using it for their mobile creations. They (and other Brushes users) will be glad to know that it has been recently updated with spanking new features. The big news of the version 2.0 is the support for layers and a whole feature-set around them. You can have/use up to 4 layars, import multiple photos, adjust layer opacity, merge and/or reorder layers, and copy/paste them between paintings. Moreover, there’s the Enhanced Brush panel, ability to adjust paint opacity within the brush panel, enhanced zooming (up to 1600%), and so on.
