BuddyTV Guide: TV listings, recommendations, and remotes (free) by BuddyTV I’m what you’d call a “special needs” TV watcher… I live in Seoul, Korea and since I’m too lazy to learn Korean I do my TV watching via a Slingbox that’s hidden somewhere in my brother’s house (we reviewed the Slingplayer app a while back). This lets me watch whatever’s on in the Chicago area even though I’m 14 time zones away, and it’s an awesome setup except for when it comes to finding out what’s on! If you think sitting on your couch and navigating a channel menu with your remote is a pain in the ass, try doing it through an internet-based IR relay from the other side of the planet. Trust me, it blows, but BuddyTV has fixed that. BuddyTV has features Read More
In Victor's recent reviews of iOS universal remotes, most of the products' focus was on helping you control your entertainment devices. Only one system (the Peel) delivered program recommendations in a new way, helping you decide what to watch. The approach behind Buddy TV Guide is a bit different. Launched by the team behind the comprehensive buddytv.com site, this free iPhone app (a software-only solution, no paired hardware to buy -- with a catch) fronts a recommendation engine that does its best to learn what you want to watch based on your preferences and selections, getting better and closer to the mark over time. Since it asks about your favorite channels and the types of things you like to watch, you can save time on finding the programs that interest you (and bypass the ones that probably don't). Company execs told me their goal is getting the 'discovery time' down to Read More

In the video above, CTO Bill Baxter takes me through the main features. He shows me on an iPad for easier viewing, but the app is for the iPhone and soon Android. It combines a viewing guide on your iPhone, with social features like chat and being able to broadcast what shows you are watching to Facebook and Twitter. But it also suggests shows for you to watch that are airing now, upcoming, trending, or on your favorites list. The app works with Google TVs, and eventually will be able to act as a remote with tablets and phones that sport an IR transmitter. (With Google TVs and Dish set-top boxes it will work over WiFi). The problem it is trying Read More

There's a lot to like here. But the thing that I really like is the ability to see all the shows recommended for me with the ability to filter them by specific categories. It's very cool. I told it what shows were my favorites and rated a few and it started getting me good suggestions quickly.
More time watching tv!

This is way better than any other TV channel guide. Recommendations are a huge addition.
The future is here.

It's much faster than using my Comcast guide. Never thought I would be able to control my TV with my phone.
