Apple showcases apps ready for the retina iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:15:32 UTC +00:00
Apple wants you to enjoy that brand new retina iPad and has compiled a list of apps that are ready for the high-resolution display. It includes many of the big-name apps that were quick to get their app updated after Apple’s iPad announcement last week. The list includes entertainment apps, productivity apps, games, and more. Kelly spent the last three years covering mobile technology at places like BGR, Gizmodo and The Unofficial Apple Weblog. Before writing, she spent a few years working with and teaching others how to use Adobe Flash and Macromedia Director. Even earlier than that, she spent six years working on her Ph.D in Microbiology. When she's not writing, she can be found fishing the lakes and hiking the mountains of Western Maine with her husband and children. Read More

It's iPad day and many of you are looking for the best Retina-capable apps to install on your new Apple tablet. Apple's got you covered with a section of the iTunes app store dedicated to apps updated to support the iPad's new retina display. Apple's list will get you started, but it isn't exhaustive and only includes major apps like Tweetbot and Evernote. There are many other retina-ready apps that are not being showcased by Apple. We won't be able to list every single retina app in the App Store, but we will cover some of our favorites below. If there are any that we have missed, please let us know in the comments! And here is the list from Apple: Read More

Apparently Walmart will be selling them in just a few short hours, well before Apple itself does tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, the first direct-to-consumer shipments should be hitting anytime now. Long story short, a lot of people are going to be getting the new Retina display iPad over the next several hours. Unsurprisingly, the Retina-ready apps are already flowing in. When I asked Apple for a list of third-party Retina-ready apps (all of Apple’s apps are already upgraded) a few days ago for my Read More

Calcbot – The Better Calculator
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Jul 2010 14:08:21 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on July 14th, 2010 tap tap tap's new calculator app, Calcbot, makes the Apple Calculator app look aged. There is nothing overly wrong with the calculator that is included with the iPhone. It is a pretty app that has all the functionality that you would really need to perform most math equations, but in the world of tap tap tap, it isn’t perfect. There is no history screen, no way to see what you’ve typed in a long equation, and scientific features that can only be accessed in landscape mode. Being the perfectionists that they are, tap tap tap knew that the world needed a better calculator. “Calcbot is a simple, yet intelligent calculator for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad (Universal). Never lose your place in a calculation again with the live as-you-type expression view. Simply swipe the keypad to the left to reveal advanced functions. See Read More

good but very basic
scottjl 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
nice graphics and easy to use, but not much more than a basic 4 function calculator. no landscape view. no RPN. constants. conversions. formulas. worth a buck over apple's calc? maybe, but won't knock pcalc off my home screen any time soon.
Good but has 2 major flaws.
tomkruk 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is a very good start. It is pretty, shows live history, has tape... What's not to like? 2 FLAWS. FLAW 1. The C/DEL button is too close to 0. I keep hitting it. Move it else where. FLAW 2. Some calculations are messed up, especially percentage (200-25%=199.75... THIS IS WRONG, Try this on another calculator, including the default on iPhone or Mac.) Suggestion: Give us something more than yet another calculator.... Would be cool to have a programmable button(s) F1... So I could calculate tax, example 29.99+F1 (where F1=taxrate) Also could be used as a currency calculator. Every currency calculator depends on the internet to get rate (newsflash: i don't have internet when i travel, its too expensive) So why not have it built in??? example 29.99 F1 (where F1= value*x)
Pretty good
bdawg923 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It's very basic now. Please add graphing functionality (swipe calculator down for history, up for graph, left for all the "y = " formulas. Eh?
Good start!
KSHBlog 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Snappy response, clean interface, and ability to reuse results or expression is great. Suggestion: Improve the UX with an option to have history tape on the left. For a righty, the tape is hidden while making entries; somewhat defeats the purpose of the tape.
Beautiful and functional
Strato C 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Another excellent Tapbots app.
Once again a great app from Tapbots
NinjaKoala 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
You guys did it again with this simple but effective app. Absolutely brilliant! I just love the simplicity of the app. Can't wait for the next bot!
Nice.
Wellerbj 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Simple. Cheap. Beautiful.
Nice!
Altanjohn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Definitely a must upgrade from the system calculator app. I wish you could do one tap on the history tape to copy the value, and hold to reveal all the other options. Right now it works, but feels clunky.
Yet another awesome app from the tap bot crew!
Duluen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Great jib guys, looks awesome. Very snappy and I LOVE the tape feature. Would dig some graphing functions in an update if you saw fit. Great work! Now... How about some tweetbot love?
Excellent
iPapparazi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I purchased this app solely on the fact that it was made by Tapbots. As an impulse buy, I like it a lot. Looking forward to more functionality. A short term feature request: Ability to copy to clipboard from tape?
Best
Versuri 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The app is the best but the design not good for me.
Landscape
airic 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
5 stars for landscape mode. Everything else is very sleek. 
A simple calc, just better!
Nate-OMG 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app is worth ever penny (and is not a lot of them) it does everything you need, only short of the more complex functions. And it does so in a way that makes it easy to see what you have done and fun to do. Once again tapbots has made an app the turns a simple task into a amazing app. 5 stars is an understatement.
Best best best
EmpowerMac 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Love these guys
Finally!!
Kasey123 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The Calculator app that I've been waiting for! I've tried most all of them, from the free to the $9.99 and this is the best!!
They thought ahead
813hick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The design is awesome. I love the swipe to reveal more functions which makes it easier to add more later which I'm hoping. Currently it's all the same as the built in calc app. Great job! I'm sure more will stuff will come with updates. For 99 cents you can't beat it, esp with iPad support :)
Nifty App
p.byrne 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
You probably don't need this app, but it's the nicest calculator app for your phone. Everything feels just right!
Nice and simple
awkpod 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Great for quick calculations. I would also like to see the history tape in portrait orientation.
Everything the native calc app should have been
Elvis Himselvis 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Get it, you won't regret it.
Good start, but few suggestions
LMarcus B 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is a great start. It's the cleanest-looking calculator with great basic functionality. However, I think there are a couple of things which could improve it. 1) Add graphing calculator functionality: I think Tapbots has the ability to add graphing calculator functionality, while keeping the UI clean. For example, perhaps swiping to the third screen for the graphing functionality? I can see how weightbot's graph aesthetics would make it the cleanest graphing calculator available. 2) By default, rotating 90* should, like Apple's calculator, switch to scientific mode
Another Fantastic App
Jake Marsh 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Once again the boys at Tapbots knock it out of the park. You simply MUST install this app, replace your built-in calculator app on your home screen with it, and never look back.
Great start. Will replace my default Calc once the % flaw is fixed!
New Yorker Tourist 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Great features. Please fix the % calcs mentioned in the other reviews. The calc is not working like it does on other calcs, such as the native iPhone calculator. For instance, try calculating the evening's tip on a dinner by typing "100 + 5 % =". In the native calculator, you get $105.00. CalcBot currently gives you $100.05.
Just what I was looking for!
GudNuz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
On my iPad I can now do my check tapes and keep my place. Too often I am interrupted and have to start over since we did away with tape style calculators. I particularly like the back button for corrections and that I can see what I am changing. I can even go back and change the operand if it was entered incorrectly. I had wondered about long series of calculations on the electronic tape, and am extremely pleased with the method of recording that allows so many entries to remain visible.
Simply amazing!
avela13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Makes using a calculator fun. Highly recommended.
Can Use the Keyboard Dock!
mikewake 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Everytime I try a new calculator app for the iPad I set it on the keyboard dock & see if the numeric portion of the keyboard works. This is the first one I've found that does! Glad to see this extra feature available. I use two of the other Tapbots apps (Weightbot & Convertbot) & love their style & funtionality. Love to see them both converted for the iPad.
Updates?
izdale 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
After a year and a half, they finally updated this app. What new features did we get? Oh… none. They only updated graphics for the new iPad so they could be included in Apple's list of apps ready for the new iPad. I've long switched to another calculator app with more features and that actually gets updated every now and then.
Perfect?
YesNoCancel 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
Love the easy-to-read font and the relatively large keys. And the fact that the status bar isn't hidden, since I use that area for gestures. The only possible improvement (for me) would be access to constants other than pi (and I'd prefer "pi" to be the symbol). To work it would really need to be exhaustive. And you'd also have the issue of units, so it's almost like you'd want to integrate with Convertbot.
Raises the bar of what apps should be like!
PJZ 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
Pitch perfect design. Intuitive control. The app actually has personality. I'm flat out impressed. I feel sorry for folks that aren't using this or tweetbot yet. Bravo folks!! 👏
Suggestion for update
Bay Area Jack Ash 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
Like it, but please give us the option to place the calculator to the right of the tape. Thanks
