The Top Ten Apps To Make You More Green
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Aug 2010 18:46:24 UTC +00:00
There’s an app for being green, and by an app, I mean a slew of apps. These iPhone apps range from offering general sustainability tips and games to store and product directories. A lot of green apps focus on offering general tips for everyday actions you can take to help make a difference, which really doesn’t take advantage of the iPhone’s capabilities. Below are the top ten green apps across a range of applications, some of which could help you save money in addition to living on the greener side of the fence. 1. If you need ideas for how to be more green, try Green Genie. iTunes ($0.99) The app suggests more than 100 projects to tackle, like bringing your own grocery bags when you go shopping or reducing your company’s paper usage. The app includes a glossary of green terms and has a library of “essential reading” on sustainability. Read More

I don’t know if you guys are aware of it but today is Blog Action Day, an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. The goal is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion about important issues. This year’s topic is climate change so we selected a few applications that will help you lower your environmental impact on our planet. iLocavore (download for free) will be your mobile tool for finding locally grown foods and locally made products at home and on the road. Very confusing for my age. Glad it was free, it would have been a waste!!!
Nice idea

I was excited with this application - the big but is you need to retype every activity every day - please add a way to just repeat the daily activities each day then this application would definately get used more and reach more of its potential.
Great App

Does exactly what it advertises. Anything too complicated can confuse casual users. Great App!
Good start but could use some improvement

This is a nice free app to give a rough estimate on your C02 consumption. It uses your starting GPS location and your final GPS location to calculate distance. This, of course, doesn't allow for the many twists and turns that can take place in a commute. You could actually drive around all day and the app would tell you 0 emissions.
Eco-forward

Sounds great, about time a co2 tracker was created.
Limited usefulness

Yes - it is free; but no - I don't think it really does much to track one's carbon footprint. It is simply a calculator for "rough" calculation of travel distance - based on a very limited number of options: large car, small car, airplane, bus, etc. A much better idea would be to calculate by a vehicle's avg. mpg, allowing you to enter mileage and fuel consumed. I also expected some sort of calculation for daily home living, such as monthly electricity use or something similar. For me, I ride a bike 90% of the time. Wish there was a way to calculate how much CO2 I am NOT using ... But again, it's free, so I won't complain.
too simplistic and not accurate

I have examined many carbon counter programs and websites, and just about all of them lack some fundamental options (Carbon Tracker is amongst those that lacks these basic options): Those of us who live in large metropolitan cities more often than not, live in apartments, so our power consumption is different. I almost always use the subway, so my carbon output is definitely different than those who drive the same distances as i travel on public transport (for that matter, what if i use the bus?). Also, I opted to use a company that uses wind power to supply my electricity. This would also impact my carbon output. And lets not forget about our shopping habits; do we shop farmers markets or stores that buy locally produced food, or do we nto consider this issue. How often do we purchase electronics, clothing, furniture, etc? All of these factors contribute to our carbon footprint. I really wish developers making carbon calculators would think about these issues. It would help us all make more of a difference in how we live. Fancy sites/applications are nice and all...but i know we can do better.
Simple but free

This is definitely something you get what you paid for. Since it is free, you can't expect much. It is nothing more than a trip calculator. There is no other type of activity available.
