'Scotland Yard' Review - Not So Hot on the Trail
Calendar16 Tue, 22 May 2012 17:13:11 UTC +00:00
The success of the digital version of a physical board game hinges on three things: the quality of the base game, the accuracy of the representation of said game and if both of these things are pulled off well enough to sustain a community long after you’ve tired of getting beaten by friends and family. With that in mind, is Scotland Yard [ $4.99 ] a successful iOS port of a classic board game? No, but it could be. It’s not as if Ravensburger’s Scotland Yard, the 1983 Spiel des Jahres recipient, isn’t fundamentally sound. One player is Mr. X, terribly creative criminal mastermind, stealthily darting about London in an attempt to avoid the grasp of five Scotland Yard investigators, represented by the other players. Players move about via ticket cards allowing access to modes of transportation around the game map: taxis, buses, boats or the London Underground. The goal of Read More
Much to our surprise, non-Retina games and apps on the new iPad aren't anywhere near as terrible looking at the difference between Retina and non-Retina games and apps on the iPhone. Regardless, it's still really nice to play games that take full advantage of the over three million pixels of that beautiful screen. Four great games recently had updates land to boost them into higher-than-HD-land: So, either mash that "Update All" button if you've got these games on your new iPad, or check out some of the above reviews. Best of 2011 nominations: iPhone games
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Dec 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
During December and January, The Unofficial Apple Weblog is soliciting your nominations and votes for the best products for Mac, iPhone/iPod touch, and iPad. We'll start with nominations in a category, and then tally your votes for the top-nominated products a few days later. The winner in each category receives the highly-coveted title of TUAW Best of 2011. Today's category for TUAW Best of 2011 nominations is iPhone games. With over 500,000 apps in the iOS app store, there are plenty of games to choose from, and literally hundreds that became popular in 2011. Infinity Blade II ($6.99) was an App Store game of the week, so perhaps it deserves your nomination for the best iPhone game of the year. First Person Shooter fans love Gameloft's Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation ($6.99) on the iPhone, while Swampy the Alligator has captured the hearts of adults and kids alike in Where's My Read More

Posted 09/08/2011 at 2:29pm | by Nic Vargus As I prepare next week's amazing Peggle HD GameTime, I need a few breaks from the color-frenzied, peg-bouncing action on my iPad. My co-workers, on the other hand, are in desperate need of a break from the wonderful world of shipping a magazine. So we've opted to take those breaks with you, our equally game-crazy readers. This week, we're taking a unique opportunity to challenge our readers to a few of our favorite games. If you think you can beat us at our own game, keep reading. Flo will be playing Words with Friends. Beware, she's playing on an Android phone and can drop more four-letter words than a sailor. Username: Ohthatflo Susie will be playing Carcassonne. TiPb Picks of the Week
Calendar16 Sat, 18 Jun 2011 19:47:53 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Saturday, Jun 18, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! This week I have gone for a piece of hardware and it’s the Apple TV. I have resisted the urge to buy one of these for a while now. When it comes to media players, I am very fond of my Popcorn Hour which plays every video format known to man. I decided to take the plunge and pick up an Apple TV for my bedroom; mainly for AirPlay. So far it has worked perfectly. Read More
Develop, a super industry publication that focuses mainly on development topics and inside baseball, has just released its annual “Develop 100” article, a listing that ranks the top 100 game developers of the year. Normally, we wouldn’t cover this kind of thing, but 2011’s list is remarkable in that it ranks several smartphone-focused studios at the tiptop of the gargantuan list brimming with behemoth houses with hundreds of staffers. If you take a gander, you’ll see that 2D Boy, the creator of World of Goo [$2.99 / HD], is sitting at number two. Zepto Lab, the creator of Cut the Rope [$.99 / HD] sits at number three just below God of War developers SCE Santa Monica, while Media Vision, The Coding Monkeys, 1337 Game Design, and Rockstar Leeds round out the rest of the top ten. Respectively, these houses built Chaos Rings [$12.99 / HD], Carcassonne [$9.99], Dark Nebula [$.99], Read More
Developer Spotlight: Lin Jinjie, maker of Due

By Rene Ritchie, Monday, May 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Lin Junjie. What’s your name Lin Junjie. It’s a Chinese name, so Lin is the last name and Junjie is my given name. Also happens to be exactly the same as a popular Chinese pop singer, so I get quite a number of wrongly directed tweets from his fan girls or people telling the whole world what song they’re listening to. What’s your company’s name? Phocus LLP, and its main business here in Singapore is photography (explained later). Where are you based? I’m based in Singapore, a really tiny island on the equator where the only seasons are rainy or sunny. Read More
Even without Game Center support, Carcassonne [$9.99] was our runner-up Game of the Year last year. But now, with the release of a new update adding said support, what’s the GOTY Advisory Board supposed to do? Create a time machine? Nah. How about a “Missed Connections” category? Perfect! While we figure this issue of great import out, play against some of your Game Center friends in one of the best board game turned video games on the planet. Also, enjoy some of the other perks of Version 2.20, which is sure as sure the last “big” update to the game until the first add-on graces the App Store. New leaderboards, 43 new achievements, score sharing, improved stability, chat time stamping, better power consumption, and an ELO bug fix are all a part of this free update that should see some significant hold-over until game creator The Coding Monkey hits fans with Read More

Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Dec 2010 10:35:56 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich innerhalb der Ordner folgende Apps*: Amazon.de (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Convertbot (1.59 €; App Store-Link), AnalyticsPro (5.49 €; App Store-Link), Delivery Status touch (3.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), Dropbox (kostenlos; universal; App Store-Link), iCabMobile (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Skype (kostenlos; App Store-Link), WeatherPro (2.99 €; App Store-Link), Pastebot (2.99 €; App Store-Link), LogMeIn (23.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), OffMaps (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Kik (kostenlos; App Store-Link), PayPal (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Linkie (0.79 Read More
Is the video game killing the board game? I don't know, man, but I think you can argue that tabletop licensors themselves are doing a brilliant job driving nails into their products' respective caskets. Take a look at digital storefronts and you'll see classic tabletop-properties-turned-video-games like Carcassonne [$9.99] and Connect 4 [99¢] lined up next to non-traditional games like or . It's weird. I think the reason why licensors choose to peddle digital versions of their games extends beyond obvious cold business realities. Games like Connect 4 translate well to digital, first of all. But more importantly, these games operate as touchstones. You remember sinking your sister's Battleship [99¢] battleship. This stuff has emotional weight. For me, no other game conjures as many memories as Monopoly [$9.99]. This is why I buy the game so damn much. And while it's oft been digitized, until this afternoon, the game hasn't been put Read More
Carcassone app going universal, gets higher price to match
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Dec 2010 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
Carcassone, the iOS version of the European board game, has quickly become an App Store favorite after its release, and now iPad owners can get in on the fun. The app is going universal, so it will not only run on both devices natively, but it will also have a completely enhanced UI for the bigger machine, letting you explore all of the colorful roads and meeples in full scale. Because the app will now work on both devices, the price is being raised, from US$4.99 to $9.99. But as I understand it, if you've already purchased the app, you'll get it for the other device anyway -- if you've already paid, you shouldn't have to pay again. The update is supposed to be out on the App Store soon, but the price has already been raised. Still, given the feedback on this one so far, $9.99 is a great price Read More
The long-awaited Universal update for [$4.99] is going to be submitted to Apple for approval on December 7, developer The Coding Monkeys has announced. And as the studio declared months ago, the price of the App will raise alongside with this release. With the onslaught of submissions, it's hard to say when it will actually be approved, but we've got our fingers crossed we'll see it before the holidays. Currently, the game is setting at $4.99, a veritable steal considering the depth and quality of the German board game turned touch screen App, but soon it'll be hiked to $9.99 on the US store. It almost goes without saying, but if you've been planning on making a purchase, grab it now it at its regular, non-Universal App price. Save some cash for some other games and Christmas gifts, eh? The Coding Monkeys has shown off the enhanced UI for the iPad Read More
'Carcassonne' for iPad Update Hitting This December
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Dec 2010 21:03:32 UTC +00:00
What's taking the guys behind Carcassonne [$4.99] so long to update the app with universal support? Creating and then implementing new UI ain't easy. But rest assured, the update will hit in 2010 as planned. In fact, it'll hit later this month. In a new blog post, the crew lightly details some of the work that has been done and even shares some exciting new screenshots of the new, bigger, and enhanced UI elements we'll be fiddling with in the coming days. (And fiddle we will; this game flat-out rocks.) "After being busy working out details, new designs and user interfaces, we are ready to commit to a release of the iPad update in December," the post reads. "So in a short while you’ll be able to enjoy Carcassonne on the big screen and we will start working on expansions and adding Game Center support." Here's a sampling of what's being Read More
'Neuroshima Hex' Review – You Had Me at Hex Grid
Calendar16 Mon, 20 Sep 2010 23:16:27 UTC +00:00
Earlier this month we took a look at Neuroshima Hex [$2.99], the iPhone adaptation of a strategy-heavy boardgame based in the Neuroshima universe. This game world straddles several sci-fi cliches and includes things like nuclear war, a sentient robotic revolt, mutants, humans doing whatever they can to survive, and even somewhat intelligent carnivorous plant life. Adapted from the tabletop Neuroshima game, Neuroshima Hex features four of the main factions and is fast-paced enough that calling it an "action" board game seems appropriate. Like many strategy games with unique rulesets, Neuroshima Hex is fairly complicated. Playing the game involves selecting one of the four factions, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, then playing with a 35 tile "deck". Players start by placing their headquarters on the game board, and the rest of the game revolves around attacking the enemy HQ while defending your own utilizing the tiles you draw at the Read More

Read More
I used to play a game on the PocketPC called Cities, which I took to be a stripped down version of , especially since the tiles were taken directly from the Carcassonne tile library.  While Cities would actually make a good mini-game for Carcassonne, Carcassonne has so much more to offer.  I never would have guessed that a tile based city building board game could be so strategic, but even the solitaire mode pretty much gets the best of me.  It’s especially compelling because there is no combat involved, which is unusual for what amounts to a turn-based strategy game.  The slow pace might be a bit daunting for some, but slow pace is right up my alley these days. Simply put, Carcassonne is a game about building cities.  Unlike the trend of constructing buildings and keeping people happy ala SimCity, however, this game has finite resources and clear cut goals.  Read More
So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 08:20:31 UTC +00:00
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we Read More
In a completely unexpected turn of events, Apple seems to have authorized FedEx and UPS to begin delivering iPhone 4's early. Some people are lucky enough to have their devices out for delivery today or in some cases even already delivered. Also, Apple has confirmed that other preorders will be arriving tomorrow, an entire day ahead of the original launch date. It's hard to say whether or not Apple is just throwing ravenous preorderers a bone, or if they're potentially attempting to defray the nearly inevitable launch fiasco experienced with the iPhone 3G when AT&T's servers simply could not handle all the activations on launch day. Yesterday the developers of Carcassonne [$4.99] mentioned on Twitter that they've already got 1.1 submitted which contains high-resolution artwork for the iPhone 4, and if you own either Flight Control [99¢] or Real Racing [$4.99 / Free] updates are already on the App Store that Read More
Carcassonne review
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Jun 2010 06:47:20 UTC +00:00
Published: June 15, 2010 Comment         I hate laying puzzles, and I at times loathe my passion for solitaire games. This love/hate relationship has never been fully explored until now. Carcassonne is a combination of these two types of time wasters. The puzzle aspect rears it’s ugly face in form of the limited types of pieces to place on the board. The solitaire aspect is all about clearing the puzzle before you run out of pieces. It sounds like a simple game, and to some even like a boring one at that. Let me tell you right now that Carcassonne is far from boring, actually it has become one of the most involving games I have ever played on my iPhone. Ok, I need to back it up just a bit here as I have not mentioned that there are a number of different game modes that play completely different. Read More
Classic Board Game Carcassonne Arrives on the iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 07 Jun 2010 15:45:46 UTC +00:00
When I was just a wee lad growing up in the 80s, board games were a huge part of my gaming life. The Atari 2600 & Nintendo Entertainment System were great and all, but you just couldn’t keep a good board game down. Monopoly, Trouble, even a fine game of Chess or Checkers took much of my leisure time at home, but there was one board game in particular that I had a fondness for and that was Carcassonne. It looks like I can relive the days of playing Carcassonne all over again as the game has just been released for the iPhone. Carcassonne for the iPhone successfully recreates the board game experience in both how the game plays as well as its look. You can play friends online via local Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and online multiplayer through the Internet. Don’t have friends? No problem as Carcassonne can match you up with Read More

After Small World, Carcassonne is one of the most anticipated designer board game apps to hit the App Store. It took a little longer than expected, but everything from the basic Carcassonne game is here. Nothing more, nothing less. There are no river tiles, no traders, no princess or dragon. It's completely easy to play, and the plethora of options - local or online human opponents, very well-created AI players and a new solitaire version - mean this is game to get if you know what a meeple is and enjoy sending them off to do your bidding. Sure, we've had the clone (or not, depending on who you ask) app called Might And Card: Golden Edition, but now we finally and awesomely have an official Carcassonne app for the iPhone / iPod touch [$4.99] and it was well worth the wait. [game] Carcassonne – der Brettspielklassiker
Calendar16 Fri, 04 Jun 2010 06:35:51 UTC +00:00
