=====
CardStar features SyncScan™, our advanced system for rendering barcodes. This new technology allows for successful barcode scanning with most merchants using handheld scanning guns. Some difficulties may still arise when attempting to use flatbed scanners, but these models typically come with a side scanner that we recommend be used when available.

Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me pick a shopper card app
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Jun 2011 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
Dear Aunt TUAW, My wallet is full to bursting -- and not with cash. (Don't try pulling a Soupy Sales on this nephew.) I've got too many shopper cards, library cards, etc. Help me empty my wallet of cards -- and if you don't mind, fill it with cash instead. Your loving nephew, Fnulnu Dear Fnulnu, (And, yes, Auntie knows what that stands for.) Auntie isn't about to send you money, so she's skipping the filling-with-cash part. Cheeky! She does, however sympathize about the shopper cards. All of us now carry more and more IDs around that stretch our wallets to their limits and our patience as well. She's reminded of a great scene from Neil Gaiman's American Gods, where the hero tried to argue with a ticket agent that an expired driver's license was worthless for driving but perfectly valid for identification purposes. Good book. Auntie is most familiar with Read More
CardStar iPhone app now integrates Groupon deals
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 07:50:15 UTC +00:00
CardStar’s mobile loyalty app has been updated to integrate with Groupon, bringing all those lovely Groupon savings (estimated at $1 billion) to CardStar’s 1.3 million iPhone users. Once your CardStar app is updated, you will be able to access deals offered by both national and local retailers in more than 160 cities. With this Groupon integration, local businesses and merchants get another touch point to reach shoppers in their area. Consumers on their end get to access additional deals which are outside of traditional retailer rewards programs. I like it. Actually – I LOVE Groupon! What they’ve accomplished is astonishing, having turned coupon-hating people like me into Groupon fans and evangelists. Bringing a piece of paper to a store or restaurant to get some percent off is not my cup of tea – paying less in advance makes more sense and is way more convenient. Back to CardStar – it was Read More
CardStar's Vision Problem
Calendar16 Fri, 15 Oct 2010 22:54:16 UTC +00:00
Progress is usually a good thing, but it’s spoiling a very nice free iPhone app. The app is called CardStar and after you enter all of the numbers for your shopping loyalty cards, it  generates a matching bar code so you no longer have to fumble through your wallet at the cash register. The cashier can scan your card from the phone. Or at least they could. Some of the new phone screens, like that of the iPhone 4, won’t let a laser scanner read the barcode. All is not lost however. A cashier can enter the bar code number seen on your screen, and CardStar has added some features that may offset your annoyance at uselessly waving your phone around the checkout. It saves you from overlooking special deals even if you forgot to bring the discount flier to the store. If the store has an optical scanner, it will Read More
All those loyalty cards you have dangling off your keychain or plumping your wallet? Gone. In their place, smartphone users will have free apps like Key Ring or Cardstar on their cellphones. And if you’re the type who likes to search for bargains and clip coupons in the Sunday circular, these apps throw you a high-tech bone. Starting this week, Cardstar and Key Ring will include such things inside the app itself, so you can tap a button and have a coupon delivered to your cellphone. No snipping, no ink-stained hands. No worries about leaving the coupons behind on the kitchen counter. There are a few bumps along the way to this shopping utopia, and we’ll get to those in a minute. But as more supermarkets join the trend — as seems almost certain — and as the software developers fix some minor flaws, these apps could become essential to shopping. Read More

Mobile Web Meets Internet of Things: Barcode Scanning
Calendar16 Tue, 12 Jan 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Two of the biggest trends we tracked last year were Mobile Web and Internet of Things. In a new series on ReadWriteWeb, which we're calling Mobile Web Meets Internet of Things, we'll explore how these two important trends are converging and look at some cutting edge example products. We start with barcode scanning... Internet of Things is when everyday objects become connected to the Internet, via technologies such as RFID tags, sensors and barcodes. One trend we saw expanding in 2008-09 was mobile phones being deployed as readers for barcodes. Increasingly, smartphones such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices offer applications that allow you to scan a barcode on a product or object and get more information about it. Barcodes are similar to RFID tags, in that they both hold data. RFID tags are generally more functional and flexible than barcodes. Also RFID tags can be read/write, whereas barcodes cannot. Three free iPhone apps that make shopping easier
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Dec 2009 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
The free Point Inside app maps your favorite malls, showing you both stores and services. Shopping is supposed to be fun, dangit! But it's invariably a hassle-filled experience, especially at this time of year. That's why I never walk into a store without these three iPhone apps at the ready. They're all free, and they make shopping faster, easier, and sometimes even a little less expensive. CardStar Newly updated with an improved interface and support for 75 additional merchants, CardStar replaces various discount, reward, and membership cards in your wallet. To digitize a card, just enter a merchant name and your barcode number. When you get to the checkout, pull up the onscreen barcode and hand over your phone for scanning. Just don't toss your actual cards until you've done some trial runs, as some scanners have trouble recognizing the iPhone's screen. pic2shop Suppose you're at Borders, about to plunk down Read More

Five (really useful) Apps for everyone

Some apps are almost universal. Chances are you may find a use for one of these apps in your daily goings-on, just as I have. All links are iTunes links. Flicktunes, $0.99 Remember our chat about driving and using your iPhone? Flicktunes makes controlling the iPod in your iPhone (or touch) much easier when you have to focus on other things -- like driving. Flick your finger left or right to navigate your playlist, up or down to start or stop the music. The album art is all you see, plus a speaker icon indicating playback. It's super easy, a simple app, but very useful if you're driving or otherwise occupied while jamming out. CardStar wants you to dump your membership cards
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Jun 2009 09:05:33 UTC +00:00
CardStar is a neat mobile service-application combo that wants to gather around loyalty cards, merchants and coupons around their platform. The main idea seems to tackle the membership/loyalty cards market and sell consumers the benefit of not having to take their cards with them when shopping. As a result, you’ll no longer have to carry a number of such cards around in your wallet — or at least that would be the case if CardStar succeeds. And how they do it? CardStar makes all your cards digital and even includes a scannable barcode, which you should show to a merchant to collect points, miles or whatever. So as a user, it’s your “duty” to input all your cards to the application/service. As expected in this iAge we live in, initially CardStar released a dedicated iPhone application, which they are offering as a free download. If proves successful, and I don’t see Read More
Bonus Card consolidation for your iPhone with CardStar
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Jun 2009 20:46:15 UTC +00:00
The (limited time) free CardStar app replaces keychain tags and wallet-cluttering bonus/discount/rewards/”shopper’s club” cards with scanner-friendly barcodes. If you’ve got the guts to flash a phone instead of swipe your plastic, it could be a real space (and trouble) saver. There have been many manual scan-and-save tactics to slim down your wallet posted for use with an iPhone, but CardStar’s app takes the scanning out of the equation. It has pre-loaded logos for a wide variety of national and regional stores, but can create a scan-able “card” for any store. Simply create a new entry, name it, and punch in the numbers just below or above the barcode from your bonus card, and CardStar does the rest, creating an alphabetical list of stores when you open it up. There are advanced options that let you customize the barcode style and even reverse the number order, but most of us are going Read More
CardStar: A Better Way to Get Reward Cards Into an iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Jun 2009 18:59:52 UTC +00:00
Do you carry barcoded merchant “Reward Cards” with you when you shop? I used to attach the mini versions to my keychain but I had too many: Borders, Barnes & Noble, Giant and several more. Of course, when I removed them from the keychain, they were never with me when I was shopping at my favorite locations, so I never got the “rewards.” Sometimes the store will try to find my account by phone number, but that’s hit or miss. For a while, I tried to use my iPhone camera to capture and carry the barcodes around, but it’s just not suited for close-up, detailed photos. I’d say I had a 50 percent or so success rate with that method. The Consumerist just made mention of CardStar, which you can find in the iTunes App Store. It’s currently free, but only for a limited time, so I just nabbed it. At Read More

CardStar rocks
CaseJan 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is awesome. Totally works at the stores we input and makes it so much easier than carrying all those tags on the key ring.
An App for Everyday Use
Bvanyo 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Finally an app that does what was originally intended for the iPhone, third party software we will use everyday.... This application works great, the latest update fixed an issue at my local YMCA and is truly a great application I will continue to use everyday.
card star
Oceanair 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Update - 2-18-09: downloaded new version today and it works great!! The 2 stores that could not scan now do, YEAH!! So easy to upload and how convient...no more bulky cards. Great deal for only .99 cents
Neat idea, but no scan so far
midatl 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
What a great concept, but so far, it hasn't worked for me either. I know barcodes have different formats, (aspects), and I've match them perfectly to my cards. Now trying to adjust the size, larger to see if that will make scanners pick it up, but I"m afraid, as some reviewers have mentioned, it's the iPhone screen reflection that causes it to not work, and if that's not the case, I wonder how previous reviewers have gotten it to work, unless they have screen protectors that are not shiny. I know I've had the same problem with items in the store sometimes that have cellophane over the barcode. Same issue here, but like I said, I'm trying increased sizes to see what happens, but the jury is still out on this one. If it ever works, I will give it 5 stars.
CardStar is very cool
efm56 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I didn't have to tell the clerk at CVS that I forgot my card again, she just scanned my phone. Very convenient.
Incredible cardstar
surfchick13 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app! Waited to purchase until the new version, since then have used it at Stop and shop, Blockbuster, etc. It's awesome, I don't even carry my reward cards anymore!
New Update
DrCardio 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As of the new update to cardstar app, I can say that it has made my daily life much easier now. I don’t have to worry about having cards in my wallet or on my keychain. All I do is load my cards into my iPhone into the cardstar app and I don’t have to worry about my cards anymore cause they are all in one place. I recommend everyone who has purchased the cardstar app to make sure you have the new version, it works perfectly you will not be disappointed. For those that have not purchased the app yet, what are you waiting for! This is the first useful app that has been developed thus far. If you are tired of looking for your cards and always having trouble scanning your cards at check out, then cardstar is the app to go with. This is the reason why I like this app. My keys would always scratch my barcodes and it made it a nightmare for me to scan my cards, but now that problem is fixed. Guess what it even scans at Best Buy and my gym membership card. Thank you whoever you for developing this app you made life just a little bit better.
Cardstar greatness
javicruz 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
So recently was turned onto this new app called Cardstar. I was a little sceptical due to the fact that I was being sold on an app that would scan bar codes from my phone. After using it several times at Stop And Shop and Best Buy, I found this app to be a very handy tool. I no longer carry any of my rewards cards and my key chain thanks me.
Anti glare film works better
Seth J. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have an antiglare film on my iPhone (be careful to get the one with the matte finish) and Cardstar worked perfectly at the Kroger yesterday. It didn't perform when held up to the console scanner, but the hand held scanner picked it up on the first pass.
Good idea. Flawed in execution
Cdb10601 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had high hopes for this and entering my cards was easy enough. My big complaint though us it doesn't work on the grocery store scanners ( kroger). Kind of defeats the purpose. It is still good to have as a repository for all my membership info though. One other thing that bugs me is the startup screen seems to linger too long. Don't know if that can be changed or not.
Great idea! Looking forward to v2.
JR92130 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great idea!!! I'm looking forward to a bug fix which will help stability and reduce the crashing. I'm also hoping they will add the following cards: -LA Fitness -Vons -24hr fitness Highly recommended app!
Could be very useful
peterpg 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
A nice idea, could be very useful.
Great app
rbcodes 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Used it at CVS last night and it worked as advertised! Great app
Does not scan
wolfwerks 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea, but I don't know how the other reviewers think that it works. It does not scan from the iPhone screen. It is too reflective. So I seem to have wasted a $1 on something that stores my numbers. But then most of them have my phone number which I just give the store to access the account. Until the reflective aspect is solved, don't waste your money.
Nice idea... but doesn't work.
icazzi 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Clearly there are developer reviews on here. Apple needs to figure out how to control this. Anyways, the technology simply does not work; you cannot scan the iphone screen with a barcode reader. A nice idea in principle, but this app does little more than store all your membership numbers.
Excellent App!!!!
Ifresh102 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app.... Wish had more options but way better than the similar apps!!
Cardstar rules
Trippany1 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great application! Make sure you have the latest update and you will not be disappointed. I used it at Pet Smart tonight and the cashier was so impressed.
Great App
rogelio999 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Works great as advertised. Excellent customer support
Genius App
mkl605 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Ease of use, elegant interface, brilliant idea. AND IT WORKS. Carrying my bonus cards in my wallet and on my keychain is really not a big deal, but scanning off my iPhone is just so much cooler. Tip for those that are having trouble scanning: had a cheap screen protector that actually blocked the scanning process, but after removing, it scanned perfectly. Have since switched to a better screen protector, and is scanning fine.
It saved me a trip home!
crivon 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I forgot my BSC gym membership card last night becuase I only broght my smaller set of keys out with me. It saved me a trip home, and the girl at the front desk just took a look at my number on the phone and off I went to work out! thanks
Needs more features
Zthreescotty 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Good concept. Needs a feature to upload a photo or logo for cards not on list already(GNC, Hastings, Shopco). Also needs to at least state the merchant name above the barcode if entered manually. Tried at Albertsons and it didn't work, however I had the number handy for the app and entered manually. Still kept me from carrying the plastic cards around
Did not work
wayneml 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Put in my code for the YMCA and it gave me a nice barcode. When I went to scan at the "Y", did not work. Put in Ralph;s grocery card, did not scan from store. No response from the developer. Will be getting my money back on principle. Let me know when it works.--change to review--developer did respond and they are working on fixes.
Cardstar is pretty sweet.
Steele 52 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent app. Already appreciate how lighter my wallet has become. Easy to load up. Works great at checkout and beats carrying around all of those annoying cards on my keychain. Pretty slick. Good value.
Frustrating.
Cactus1993 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Barcodes don't scan, and aren't generated right. It just doesn't work. Frustrating app for a buck.
Doesn't work
sbsox35 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
In theory: great concept. In reality: simply doesn't work.
Needs more merchants
Frev7 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
It works OK for the merchants listed I just wish there was a way to recommend merchants to add.
Over Worked Mom
A Mayer 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love how it works on my Kroger card and Hallmark cards. I wish the bar card would work with my Costco and AAA card.
I have been waiting
bcolekid 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Superb. Codes for libraries please. Or import images capability
Work as advertised in most occassions.
seattlerogerluo 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
My Costco card somehow doesn't work for this app although it does have Costco among its merchants.
Decent app, needs one change (screen brightness)
avatarr 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
I have had mixed success with CardStar. While it does exactly what I would want it to do, it seems that some scanners have difficulty reading the bar code. The two major factors seem to be how clean the screen is and the level of brightness. I keep my screen immaculately clean but as a result, it becomes very reflective. I think the reflectivity tends to work against the app in a few cases. I read somewhere that turning screen brightness up helps. Sure enough, when I turned up the brightness, I had more success. My recommended change to this app is to allow the setting of the screen brightness, or at the very least just increase brightness to maximum whenever the codes are displayed and go back to the original setting when the application is closed.
Great!
StrawberryPineapple 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
It worked! And it got scanned so fast that the skeptic sales associate behind the counter couldn't believe it and was mega impressed! Me too! and with big relief because I left my cards at home. Great job developers! Please add more store cards :)
Great space saver
stonemarble 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Only problem is costco still needs card
Very Good!
Unseen Vision 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
This app is awesome. I don't know why people are saying it doesn't work. Maybe they're not putting the card info in correctly? Works perfect for me.
Great App Idea!
Reasonator 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I love this app. I pulled 5 cards out of my stuffed wallet. Plenty of room for cash now (I just need to get some of that LOL). I too have had problems here and there scanning, but agree that brightness makes a difference. I have a few feature requests that will make the app top notch:
Great
K-calito 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Works great at giant Thanks.
Awsome app
J-Man03 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
It worked great thanks. I had to get a new wallet because it broke and could not fit all the cards in. This worked out great. Just needs more stores in the database
Amazing
Maulable 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
It is so nice having such a thin wallet thanks to this app. It even perfectly reproduced the barcode from my local library card - it was so easy and took mere seconds to do. & I no longer have to get new savings cards when the barcodes rub off of my keychain cards. More than worth the nothing I paid for this app!
Love the app!!
x hArRiSoN413 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I used of at CVS today and it scanned fine. It's great too because I would never carry a CVS card on me but I always have my iPod touch on me so they just scan it. Great app! I also can't wait to use it at Stop n Shop and Bog Y.
Password?
CplusH 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Looks great but I would love to see a password feature installed.
Very cool app!
A user050909 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I have been using this for about a month and love it! It has worked with the hand scanners in every store I have tried (and I use a matte screen protector) Also very easy to add ones that aren't in the list.
A truly usefull app.
mikedemo 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
The application works as advertised. I used CardStar at CVS with no problems. I read other reviews saying the vendor had trouble scanning their phones screen. My iPhone has a glare reducing film protector on it. It's possible that it might have helped. The next steps I see to improve this application is to add the ability for CardStar to use the camera to read bar code utilizing a form of OCR. Overall I am impressed and will continue to use it. My friends with their Blackberry's jaws dropped when I used CardStar. Now they want it too.
Good idea
brt312 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Good app. All the barcode stuff works but there is no support for target which is the only bad thing. Please add target. And I still give five stars!
Excellent Tool with Wow Factor!
iMarc845 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I absolutely LOVE the idea behind this app. It's a pleasure to get all those little plastic cardlets out of my wallet. Add to that the total (admittedly geeky) "Wow!" factor when I pass the iPhone with the barcode displayed to the clerk.
Kroger
PlanoBrickHouse 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Didn't work for me today. Cashier had to type it in. He thought it was too reflective? Will increase my star rating if it works at Petco.
Awesome app!
Kittyvixin 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
It works I couldn't believe it the first time I pulled it out at a store :) perfect way to get rid of all the cards on your keychain.
I think I know why some people are having problems...
CarrieBaby 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
Make sure if your card number has spaces, you put those spaces in. It makes a difference in the barcode. Compare your card to the one shown on the screen if you're not sure. I love this app, it works perfectly fine for me, and I have no anti-glare screen protector.
Darker screen works better for me
sdphotog 3.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
I have a handheld scanner and played around with different screen brightness levels. Instead of 60%, it actually worked better when the screen brightness was at the darkest setting.
AWESOME
stanley74 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
This app is GREAT!! I used it at Kroger this weekend and it worked perfectly. I'm looking forward to taking all my cards off my keys. I put my library card in and I'm hoping that will work. What about Gym Membership cards? It would be great if those were on there too. I'm a member of our city's athletic center (Frisco, TX). Also, I have a card to "The Children's Place" and they weren't on the list of stores. Overall AWESOME!!
I can't believe this is free!
Vizzini23 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
AWESOME idea for an app. I tested the barcodes on two types of scanners digital imaging and standard laserery ones. The barcodes work great. The Casher's at grocery stores are so amazed! I'd have paid 5 bucks for this app, even in it's simplicity.
Great idea. Too bad it doesn't work at all.
SavedByZero117 1.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
I loved the idea of being able to get rid of all my cards. But this thing doesn't work at all. I tried all of the supposed tricks, including turning up brightness, holding it perfectly still, etc. I verified the bar code was exactly like that on the card. Still nothing. I've been embarassed too many times saying 'scan this' and having the clerk an others laugh at me and then have to enter my phone number anyway. Do yourself a favor and skip looking foolish. Love this app

This is one of those apps that I keep on my 1st page because I use it so often. It's also one of the top 5 apps that I recommend to my friends that get a new iPhone or iPod. It works 95% of the time and always gets a, "wow, that's neat!" from the cashier.
Great app & it works great

I have used this at grocery stores, office supply stores, and retail stores and it has never failed me. If you are careful and put in your number correctly and verify the barcode looks like your original you'll be set! No more key fobs, cards in the wallet, etc. One word of warning- don't get rid of your cards! I did a reset on my iPhone without a recent backup and I lost my numbers. That would be my only feature request- add a sync service of some kind.
So handy!

Great app, I can't believe I never heard of this until recently. It has already come in handy a few times, love it. Something I would like to see added/changed: When using the store locator, instead of quitting the app and launching Maps.app could your team take advantage of the new OS 3.0 features and impliment in-app Maps? That would be awesome. twitter.com/josh_hofer
Excellent app!

This is an excellent app. You can get rid of all those cards and dangle cards from your keyschain for any store that has a rewards program. Pull out the phone and the barcode is there to scan and its free. A must have. My wallet is thin now!
Love it

I go to Olympus Gym which was not listed. Put in my number and it worked. The plastic key chain card I had from the gym broke off my key chain and frequently fell out of my pocket. Now all I need is my phone in my pocket and my bluetooth headphones. LOVE IT!
Generally pleased

I don't know if something changed with the most recent version, but I'm having a higher success rate since updating. I also follow the suggestion to present the barcode in portrait layout and keep the wand a good six inches or more away from the screen. Even when the bar codes don't scan, the cashier can still type the number in from the display. I have been able to switch to smaller wallets and keyrings.
Marvolous!

I actually work for CVS and i can use my employee card on my phone to clock in and out of work. I also get my employee discount when I buy stuff of course. It's my new favorite app.
Worked after removing screen protector

I couldn't get it to work at CVS while I was using a 3G with a screen protector. After switching to a 3GS without a screen protector it has worked every time, at least at CVS. They were using a handheld scanner.
